"Welcome to a little place we like to call 'Nam..."Glad you could make it. This jungle-covered, malaria-filled shithole is 'Nam, and your new home for quite a while. Now, to keep us from gettin' winded talkin' politics, I'll just be usin' the terms us grunts have given things. Now, 'Nam is split into two fighting factions, People's 'Nam and Royal 'Nam. People's 'Nam is backed by the Big Reds up north, while Royal 'Nam is backed by our boys back at Stateside. There's a number of countries surrounding 'Nam, but they shouldn't come up too often.
Now, the jungles of 'Nam don't mix too well with tanks or other land vehicles, so we'll mostly be slogging it on foot. This means fightin' is on a lot smaller scale than your papa saw back in '43. We'll mostly be workin' in squads and fireteams, so best get along well with each other, cause you'll be seein' a whole lot of each other's backsides.
Well that should be enough of a briefin', so lets get geared up, an' head out!" - Staff Sgt. Michael 'Mitch' Walker
So, welcome to Recon, a historical-fantasy roleplay based on US involvement in the Vietnam war. Now, one of the biggest killers of historical war roleplays, in my experience, is political discourse. To avoid this, I've decided to use lingo terms to refer to nations and regions, instead of their actual names. The basic ones to remember are People's 'Nam and Royal 'Nam, the Big Reds, and Stateside. Others will be revealed as necessary.
Basic Rules:
1. GM's word is law. If I ask you to stop, you stop. If you do not stop, I WILL have you removed from the RP, and your character killed in a Michael Bay-esque gorefest. This is your warning.
2. This is historical FANTASY, first and foremost, so don't expect perfect historical accuracy. Names of people, places, and events WILL be changed, as will when and how they happen. Technology will remain relatively the same however, and for a sense of coherency 1968 is the real-world year we'll be using for that comparison.
3. Vietnam was a violent conflict, and this will be reflected accurately in this RP. Characters are expected to die from most weapons and attacks, so as such, everyone will be allowed to create a new character immediately following character death. This does NOT excuse poor characterization or detail in the personality and backstory of your characters.
4. Chain of command and military organization ARE a thing, but as this mostly covers field engagements, they'll be rather laxly enforced.
5. Most Importantly: HAVE FUN! I cannot stress this enough, we are here to enjoy ourselves, and I want that to be a priority.
Now, Characters will have specific roles in the Squad, based on their Military Occupational Specialty, or M.O.S., which are as follows(alphabetical order)
Demolitions, Grenadier, Heavy Weapons, Intelligence, Medic, Pigman, Pointman, Radio Telephone Operator(RTO), and Sniper.
Every character has a primary M.O.S.(their area of expertise) and their Secondary M.O.S.(a role they can fill in if necessary) Demolitions and Heavy Weapons are exclusively SECONDARY M.O.S. choices, while the others can act as both Primary and Secondary M.O.S. options.
Demolitions - A vailable only as a secondary MOS, characters with this area of specialization are able to use and place explosive and demolition charges more effectively than non-trained personnel. These are also the only characters capable of performing the difficult job of bomb disposal.
Grenadier - A character with the Grenadier MOS has special training with Grenade Launchers, and are the only ones authorized to use them.
Heavy Weapons - Used as a secondary MOS only. The character has special training with various heavy weapons(not to be confused with light/heavy machine guns) and is authorized to use them.
Intelligence - Intelligence specialists are always trying to find out what the enemy is up to. Intelligence, Interrogation, Impersonation and Safecracking/Lockpicking are all things used by the Intelligence M.O.S.
Medic - This is a trooper trained in emergency medicine. First aid with a little bit of surgical training. His job is not only to protect himself but the other members of his group as well.
Pointman - The Point man is the first member of the group down the trail. He is expected to detect ambushes, enemies and booby traps in time to warn the group.
Pigman - A Pigman is a character who has received extra training in the use of machine guns. Upon choosing the Pigman M.O.S., please specify specialization in either Light or Heavy machine guns.
RTO - RTOs carry radios and other communications gear. This is essential for contact with Headquarters for helicopter extraction, dust-off, air resupply or calling in artillery or air support.
Sniper - Snipers are those characters who have above average skill with rifles. Snipers specialize in using bolt-action or semi-automatic rifles to pick off enemy targets from afar, rather than engaging them directly in firefights. Snipers are also skilled in the usage of special rifle optics, such as the Starlight Scope, and in spotting long-range targets, in order to report them as targets for artillery fire or air support.
Equipment will be issued upon character acceptance, based on primary and secondary M.O.S. choice.
