@CollectorOfMyst Glad to have your interest, and no worries! It'll be at least a few days before I start accepting characters, want to make sure to give people time. So if you decide you'd like to write a character, feel free.

@neogreggory Looking forward to it. Again, everyone has plenty of time to get sheets in, so don't worry about it.

@MegaOscarPwn You shouldn't have to place any additional code. The only thing you need to do is replace the color placeholders, and get rid of the stuff I have in parentheses.

@DracoLunaris Replying to your PM now, sorry for the delay.
Just woke up. Have a few people I need to respond to, I'll get to that soon.

Is there something wrong with the CS? I don't care if people cut out a lot of the coding stuff. Really, it won't bother me. I didn't think it was that complex though. Sorry if it is, I've never made an RP on this site before so I dunno what everyone is used to.

But if something's actually wrong with it I'd like to make sure it gets fixed.
The OOC is up. Have at it. I'm going out tonight, but I'll check occasionally from my phone for questions, which I will answer once I get back. I'll review characters as they come in, but probably won't officially accept any until most of the people who have shown interest have had a chance to write something up.

The Gladiators of House Valens

Welcome to a world where gladiatorial combat is the most sought after and glorified form of entertainment. The Four Realms have enjoyed an unprecedented period of relative peace, with no major war having occurred in almost two decades. This peace has allowed the world's warriors to hone their skills and win glory, fame, and riches in the many arenas across all the lands. Everything revolves around the arenas: money, power, influence, respect. The greatest gladiators of the most powerful houses sit as heroes at the sides of emperors, jarls, chiefs, and sultans. They revel in unending chances for battle, protected by the ancient magic of the arenas that can restore them from death countless times. They challenge other great heroes and vicious beastly monsters, all for the love of the crowd, and the influence it gains them.

In the far west, in a small coastal town of the Venatrian Empire, a tournament approaches. A humble, small tournament, but every gladiator has to start somewhere. Nobles from far away cities have eyes on these events, searching for talent that can be sponsored for entry at larger events, with greater crowds and grander rewards. You, for whatever reason, have not been able to make your way into a house of gladiators. Perhaps you were seen as too old to have potential, or too green to be worth the risk. Too unpredictable to be trusted. Too ugly to be loved by the crowd. Or perhaps you are of a beastly race, and refuse to be treated as little more than an animal of war. As the tournament approaches, you fear that you will miss this chance to make your start in the arena.

Your opportunity arises when a young woman with an old, respected name announces that she is seeking to build a team to enter the tournament. Her name is enough to get her entry into this small competition, but she is untested and her family has been diminished. Few want to join such a team, with so little time to prepare. But to you, it's your way in. Your chance to fight in the arena, whatever your motivations for that may be...

Welcome

Hello!

Welcome to The Gladiators of House Valens. This is an idea I've been wanting to try out, and I've finally worked up the courage to go for it. The basic overview of the plot and RP is this: we'll play as a thrown-together team of gladiators looking to make our mark in the arenas, in the hopes of gaining influence, power, money, fame, the works. We start out small-scale, fighting gritty battles in a little coastal town of the Empire, but eventually we will travel far and wide, to many different regions, where we fight all manner of warriors and beasts. Along the way we'll get caught up in intrigues outside of the battlegrounds, with higher stakes as we gain influence, eventually getting us tangled up in a plot that could very well threaten the entire world.

Rules

I'll try to keep this simple. I'm not going to hold anyone to strict limits on post lengths, posting rate, that sort of thing. Just be reasonable. Give us stuff to play off of in your post, engage with other characters, give a fair amount of detail where it's warranted, and length won't be a problem. For posting rate, post when you can, and let us know if you anticipate not being able to post for a significant time (like a week). I want the RP to have a relaxed posting rate, but I don't want people wondering if someone's coming back or not.

Other basic rules of decency. Respect me, respect the other RPers. Be willing to lose. I think you'll find that more character development will arise when we're faced with difficulties than success. And threat of failure makes the success more sweet. I'll go over how I think we should handle fights when we get to the first one, but for now, just know that I don't want incredibly strong characters with no weaknesses, nor do I want players who are unwilling to let their character lose.

I'm probably forgetting something. If you have concerns about anything, I like to think I'm a reasonable person, and willing to discuss whatever either in OOC or PMs. In general just... be cool? Yeah, I'm great at this.

Character Sheet

Below is the character sheet. Delete everything in parentheses as you go to keep it somewhat clean. I'm not the best at making these, but I'm mostly happy with this one. The top image is optional, not required. Feel free to tinker with it if you're looking for a non-gladiator character, or if you just want to mess with it. I don't mind, so long as most of the information is filled out.

A note on beast race characters: I'm sure quite a few people are hoping to play something more out there. I'm open to it, but we'll probably need to a do a bit of work to fit them in properly, considering how intolerant Venatria is. In addition, I don't want the entire team to be non-human apart from my character. I'm okay with two to three of them being that way, and it might make for an interesting struggle for us, but not everyone. Also keep in mind that there has been a lot of interest shown, and if everyone makes a character, I won't be able to accept everyone.

Here's the sheet. Submit it in a hider (to try to keep things clean) in the OOC when you like, and I'll review it. Only accepted characters may be placed in the characters tab.

Right, I should mention that with the number of people that have shown interest, if everyone makes a character, I just won't be able to accept everyone, even if some people are taking non-gladiator roles. If a lot of people make beast race characters those one or two spots will be especially tight.

Definitely make what you want to make the most, but just be aware that I probably can't take everyone here, and maybe be open to trying something else if the first idea doesn't work.

@neogreggory And that's totally directed at everyone, not just you, haha. I'm open to having a minotaur on the team if we can make it work.
Progress update: added capitals and religions to the realms, and finished the CS, which I'll make available once the OOC goes up. I'm going to make sure my character is finished before I do that, but with any luck that'll be sometime later today.
@VoiD Glad to hear it :)

I'm gonna go sleep now, but my goal for the weekend is to have the OOC and character sheet ready, so people can start sending in characters.
@AngryBadger Really good points, thanks for the feedback! Let's see here...

The beast races are quite varied in terms of intelligence, for sure. A dryad for instance has way more cognitive ability than a minotaur. The only thing that really groups them is that they're few in number (compared to humans) and have an appearance that is for the most part inhuman.

The revive mechanic is definitely the trickiest thing to nail down here. I almost don't want to have it, but then we'd be forced to win literally every fight without losing anyone, or the fights otherwise have to stop before anyone can be killed. To be playing a fresh-faced, inexperienced team, I don't know if I could believe that. So instead I'm taking this very "gamey" mechanic and trying to make it fit in the universe, which I probably haven't done the best job of.

I might do more of a write up on it, but the gist of the process is that the runic enchantments on each arena are capable of restoring any fighters to the physical state they were in before they entered the arena. This is done for all fighters after the match is done, not just the dead, so it heals the wounded, too. It does need to be done somewhat quickly, probably... fifteen minutes or so after death is the limit?

And the mages that work the arenas are paid quite well for it, nor is it too exhausting for them. Even small-scale tournaments don't allow just anyone to enter, so they're only reviving teams that have earned their entry one way or another. There are probably other events without any reviving (watch these ten slaves try to fight a pissed-off minotaur!) but I figured all of the matches between established teams would have it.

Unless, of course, circumstances mess with it. Runes can be damaged to become ineffective either on purpose or by accident, which can complicate things. Mages can be bribed or threatened. People of other lands might refuse to revive foreigners, or a specific beast race. And we will definitely get into conflicts outside of the arena as well. And those are always going to be life-or-death.

As for Markoth, I may need to take another thought for it. It was the last realm I thought of, and in all likelihood it would be the last one we'd end up visiting. I should probably make sure the arenas are more important there as well. Not every mage is involved in the arenas, though, plenty do devote themselves to other things. I just tried to keep the focus of my description there, since it's most of what we'll be dealing with.

Again, though, thank you for all the feedback, I really appreciate it.
