Only time will tell where this goes. It could be good, but it could also take a turn for the worse. And to be fair, Ghost in the Shell wasn't a total failure. ScarJo's casting was a misstep, but everything else was fairly enjoyable. As for Death Note... well, Defoe's casting was one of the few saving graces. Dragon Ball Evolution, however, was just pure crap.
I liked the Ghost in the Shell movie a lot. I thought they did a tremendous service to the original, and I liked all of the cast. It was definitely one of the better western adaptations of anime that's come out. Though, to be fair I have not watched the original for over a decade, so my memory is a bit fuzzy.
It does leave me in two minds though. On one hand it shows that there's potential for more coming out that get it right, but on the other hand I don't want to see a flood of adaptations especially when it's properties that can't be adequately distilled down to a single film.
It's just unfortunate that they seem to all start out with good intentions and then they go totally off the rails and start making unnecessary changes that damage the final product.
