Hey @King Cosmos, thanks for the responses. Would you mind taking a quick look at my deck and letting me know whether the Side Deck seems "good enough"? Like I said, I'm not sure how those work, and I do know Battleguard isn't exactly intended to be a competitive archetype, but I'd be happy to play some duels!
Looks like you're accepting applications to join and I'm interested; I love the campy feel of the school setting and am intrigued by the use of full deck lists for each character. However, I do have a couple of questions:
Are you running these games on Discord over some online program? Do you intend to? And are the decks expected to be competitive in that regard, or are the lists just for the sake of the characters having a gimmick?
(In other words, do I need to learn what Xyz, Link and Tuner cards are?)
EDIT: Whatever, here's hoping! ~
Name: Lupe Chong Gender: Male Dorm: Ra Yellow
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Personality:
Guadalupe is a little bit of a country bumpkin. Even in this day and age, he spent the majority of his time as a kid playing outside, helping his grandfather and uncles out in the ranch, corralling animals, running around, and wrestling the neighborhood kids. He is an honest boy, and religious even if mischievous, he tends to handle his business straightforward and that same approach can be seen in his dueling style, which is also earnest and straightforward.
History:
As mentioned above, Lupe spent most of his childhood outside and away from the computer, so it might come across as a bit of a surprise that he is in Duel Academy at this junction of his life. He knew of Yu-Gi-Oh! through friends who played the game and he bought some Warrior packs. Eventually, he had accumulated enough “cool” cards to try his hand at a local tournament… and he won. He kept entering tournaments and winning, the prize money made accruing stronger cards and duplicates a triviality. Within a year, Lupe win streak as he tore through the local card circuit got the attention of the right people and he received a scholarship and an offer to enter Duel Academy, however, there is added pressure now.
Spirituality:
Guadalupe has constant and consistent communication (mostly in dreams) with his Spirit Partner and his deck in general. However, he is completely oblivious to his intuition and would denounce anyone calling him “spiritual” or “attuned” as dumb or irrational.
Spirit Partner: Battleguard Cadet
Ace Card: Battleguard King
Horde of the Battleguard King - a classic Earth Warrior beatdown deck
I only watched the first/second part of the show, can I still join? Yes! As a matter of fact, you don't need to have watched the show at all to join in! Do you have an inkling for dumb innocent adventure, pseudo-eastern martial arts, dumb magic shenanigans and collecting ancient items that allow for dumb magic shenanigans, then feel free to throw your hat in the mix!
Omi, Raimundo, Kimiko and Clay were the students of Master Fung in the old Xiaolin Temple in China, tasked with collecting all Shen Gong Wu once these ancient magical artifacts awakened. This is because the Shen Gong Wu are incredibly powerful artifacts capable of either destroying the world or bringing upon an age of darkness should they fall in the wrong hands.
Master Fung’s intrepid students were close to completing their quest on several occasions, only to be thwarted at each step by recurring villains such as: Jack Spycer (evil boy genius), the Heylin witch Wuya, and evil Xiaolin monk Chase Young, who each sought to collect the Shen Gong Wu for their own nefarious needs.
Unfortunately, the battle with Chase Young would eventually lead to the destruction of the Xiaolin Temple, the death of Master Fung and Chase Young’s escape. Disillusioned, the Wudai Warriors disbanded, disavowing their leader Raimundo’s pleas to stick together and eventually founding independent temples around the world, for they all understood one thing:
Eventually, the Shen Gong Wu would awaken once more.
The Working Concept…
So, the general idea behind this RP will be to form small groups of RPers who can work together and compete against other groups to collect all Shen Gong Wu, store them and finally put an end to the threat that is their continued awakening. That being said, none of the other temples can be trusted to keep their Shen Gong Wu safe, can they?
In other words, it’s a competition.
Each of your teams will have some means to detect awakening Shen Gong Wu, you will race to a location and likely face off against a challenging temple; this is where the concept of Xiaolin Showdown comes into play.
When more than one person grabs a Shen Gong Wu at the same time, a Xiaolin Showdown occurs. In this namesake competition, each side wagers a Shen Gong Wu he/she already owns. In some cases, the competitors invoke a Shen Yi Bu Dare, where multiple (usually two) Shen Gong Wu are wagered. These items are wagered in a competition of the darer's choice and it can ostensibly be anything, however, all competitors are allowed to use their magical Shen Gong Wu in the challenge.
Ideally, the way I see this working is two (or more) competitors in a Xiaolin Showdown write a cinematic back and forth where they attempt to win their challenge. The GameMaster (hi!) determines whether a party gets a bonus (+0 to +3) based on the literature and all characters roll 2d6 to determine a winner.
You…
You are a pupil to one of Master Fung's former students. Form groups of three (to start), choose a temple, select an element, determine a martial arts style and fight… for the Shen Gong Wu!
Name: Age: (~15 y.o.) Pronouns:
Birthplace: Hometown:
School: Pick a school along with your team. Element: Select one of the six elements among your team. Style: If your character practices or practiced a specific martial art, tell us!
Background: You're very young and (likely) very far away from home. How did you get here? Personality: What are some of your tendencies and drawbacks? What are you good at? What are you bad at? Appearance:
Xiaolin Elements:
Water, Fire, Earth, Air, Lightning, Wood
Sao Paulo // Rai
Wudai Master Rai took his team's rejection very hard and went home to Rio de Janeiro to mull things over, but the city itself was too lively for the new him. He went to Sao Paulo instead, where he eventually opened up a BJJ/MMA gym that earned him recognition as a true martial arts master.
Bhutan // Clay
Wudai Master Clay needed a change of pace unlike his former leader. Directionless after the team's dissolution, he decided to traverse the Himalayas and climb Mt. Everest to find true purpose. Apparently, he found it on his way down as he chose to settle in the lands of the mountain dragon in Bhutan.
Ryukyu // Kimiko
Unlike her teammates, Kimiko became an immediate sensation in East Asia following the team's dissolution, famously doing reality TV tours in Japan, Korea and Singapore. However, many years have passed since then, and few people ever cared to peer beneath the surface, at the temple she'd built in the Ryukyu islands.
Hollywood // Omi
Almost without trying, Omi became the most popular of the monks who'd saved the world from Chase Young. He retreated to Hollywood to teach martial arts primarily to stunt doubles and eventually opened an academy that has quietly earned a reputation as the true steward of Xiaolin kung fu.
Dagestan // Wuya
Evil Boy Genious Jack Spycer continues to be in control of the ghost of the Heylin Witch Wuya. After their defeat at the hands of Chase Young, both of them retreated to the remote lands of southern Russia, where they’ve recruited ferocious MMA and Sambo practitioners into their New Heylin Temple.
Honestly, I think the current idea is a good one. Nobody likes Zeon, so it'll be fun to hunt down the remnants. Gives us a strong base of operations, access to MS engineers, and a straightforward mission.
If we wanted to do something original however, I'd suggest a set-up similar to Gundam Wing at the start or IBO.
Yeah, I'm not sure my issue with Newtypes is necessarily their power level, but the vagueness of their powers. The series never truly explains exactly what a Newtype or CyberNewtype is or can do, but many Newtype powers are or could be problematic, so...
If the point of the RP is: Newtypes and CyberNewtypes are slightly stronger, have quicker reflexes, better resistance/endurance than a normal human and are therefore better MS pilots, while forgoing their actual magic, then I'm likely in.
On the one hand, I've been hoping to see more interest in this concept, on the other, I am beginning to realize that the tabletop section of this website isn't exactly the most active, and I could potentially find a wider range of players over in one of the standard roleplay forums.
I want this to be dice roll-based when it comes to Xiaolin Showdowns themselves, but truthfully that shouldn't require running the entire thing as a FATE game. Therefore I'm going back to the drawing board and will most likely re-post a revised version of this concept under General Interest Check later this week.
