NAME Frederic Denton AGE 140 APPEARANCE Standing 6' tall and of seemingly thin build and the obvious Elven ears that give away his heritage, he's not exactly the most physically dominating man out there,. Usually, one of the most immediate physical quirks is the fact that he is missing his left arm. However, this doesn't leave him an invalid in any way, as, very rarely, he is seen with his Magitechnology arm attached. He wears clean white coats and a glove on his real hand at all times. In fact, the only real standard piece of clothing that he wears is a Church of Martel amulet around his neck. TITLE Mad Scientist BIRTHPLACE Luin (Or so he claims) OCCUPATION Archaeologist/Scientist/Healer/Local Schoolteacher CLASS Priest WEAPON Magitechnology arm (Scavenged from broken machines during his past adventures, he managed to cobble it together. The arm has the following abilities:
Superhuman strength - Of course, the rest of his regular elven skeleton has to be taken into account for lifting anything, so lifting anyting over 300 pounds can be difficult, but it does allow him to hit things with much greater force than a regular human.
Raybit Laser - As parts of his arm were scavanged from Desian Raybit's and other Magitechnology machines, he did manage to get a simple laser weapon working. It's not exactly a death ray, rather firing small pellet-like balls of energy, but it's enough to take down small monsters, as well as humanoids.
Scatter-Bombs - Also salvaged from the Desian fighting machines, he managed to grab a single salvo of Scatter-bombs that his arm can deploy. Now, this is a one use weapon that he cannot make any more of as such, it's a literal last-resort.
Shield deployment - Can fan out metal fins in the arm to create a rudimentary shield.
Fine Manipulators and Archaeology tools - The fingers can split into many smaller manipulator claws which are useful for examining and delicately handling small items for better identification and cleaning of any of the priceless artifacts that he excavates.
PERSONALITY Manic, dismissive and utterly devoted to the pursuit of technology and knowledge. He abhores idiots, but keeps his cards close to the chest at every given opportunity, never giving away any intentions. He seems to have an unhealthy interest in Magitechnology, like, to the point where he will ignore literally everything else in the room for a chance to study it. Although a healthy amount of fear of the desians permiates through the town, he seems to be one of the few without any fear whatsoever, more pure anger. He also gets very angry at anyone that questions his arm-stump. He is also quite partial to bottles of Palma-Potion. BIOGRAPHY Not much is known by the townsfolk of Iselia. About 15 years ago, the one-armed Elf blew into town and asked for residence and work. His healing magics came in handy around the town and at first he was asked to be the local doctor, but soon found a better calling as the local teacher, educating the local children about the finer academics, even coaching some of them to be able to join the Palmacosta Science Academy. He has, however, come under no shortage of scrutiny by the locals for his harsh teaching methods, his multiple unauthorized entrances to the Chapel of Martel, as well as his toeing the line of the Desian Non-Aggression Treaty with the Iselia Ranch a little too close for comfort. OTHER He only actually attaches his Magitechnology Arm when he's in dangerous situations or when on Archaeological digs. Otherwise, he prefers to not have it attached, carrying it around in a large case. REASON FOR ENLISTMENT Anything to stick it to the Desians, as well as to discover ancient ruins and technologies, as well as something a little more personal.
Will provide a more comprehensive backstory on request, but i also understand that his concept is a little out there, so i'm wondering if what's there is good before that.
Sylvarant's technology levels are borderline nonexistent. Even if the character was the world's MacGyver, how would he have come across the knowledge and materials to create an arm to the extent of all its abilities? I also understand the desire to have an abrasive character, but the history would make people question why they'd hire someone who so blatantly disrespected the Church and rules/authority to accompany the Chosen regardless of ability. The "Reason for Enlistment" is also supposed to be a small writing sample as opposed to the actual reason.
Oh my ! Tales of Symphonia. That has been my favourite RPG for a long time, and in part my English Teacher too as I wanted to get better at it to play that damn game.
I'd be interested in this. Do you have a limit to the party's size?
I'm looking for a handful of people, so I'll likely take a cast of 4-5.
@Izurich Wait, that's what I thought. That's why I asked for the bio since I assumed the GM would be the one making the character.
I wasn't offering myself to play as the Chosen.
See this is why I shouldn't be answering questions at 4 in the morning while trying to finish a project. Not to mention in my other tab I was literally working on that character so why wouldn't I just mention that. Though if you give me the rest of today, I will have a basic sheet up for that character as I am working on the Chosen and a small list of relevant npcs (mostly the people that hired the group, Iselia mayor, etc., etc.,), though if you'd like a tl;dr, let me know.
Interested in this. Do you have a bio for the Chosen?
So long as they were born and raised in Iselia, the bio can be written mostly freely, though ofc the CS and applicant will be scrutinized more since the role is central to the plot, and a disappearing act would kill the rp. Keep that in mind.
One of my character concepts is a "Human Ranch Escapee turned Desian Hunter", is that feasible?
NAME Lucia Danail AGE 18 APPEARANCE wavy blonde hair, blue eyes TITLE The Chosen of Mana BIRTHPLACE Iselia OCCUPATION The Chosen One CLASS n/a WEAPON n/a PERSONALITY solemn, pensive, holier-than-thou attitude? BIOGRAPHY On the day Lucia was born, the priests found the newborn with a cruxis crystal in her hand, marking her as the Goddess' Chosen. The crystal was given to the nearby temple and she was educated on the teachings of Martel for as long as she could hold a book. The priests and adults managed to negotiate a non-aggression treaty for her protection, though it didn't stop their fretting. Nonetheless, her upbringing was a peaceful one for the first ten years of her life, though afterward her days consisted of learning her future role as the Chosen as well as her future pilgrimage. After this, Lucia slowly began to withdraw from friend and neighbor, dedicating a majority of her days to prayer and solitude. While a stark contrast to her previous bubbly persona, most made sure to respect the distance she put between herself and others. OTHER Any other tidbits that don't belong in the other categories REASON FOR ENLISTMENT n/a
Once upon a time, there existed a giant tree that was the source of mana. A war, however, caused this tree to wither away and a hero's life was sacrificed in order to take its place. Grieving over the loss, the goddess disappeared unto the heavens. The goddess left the angels with this edict:
"You must wake me, for if I should sleep, the world shall be destroyed."
The Angels bore the chosen one, who headed towards the tower that reached up unto the heavens. And that marked the beginning of the regeneration of the world.
The world is in decline.
Mana is the basis of all life in the world. Without it, crops wilt, droughts arrive, and magic weakens. While the world slowly dies, a group of half-elves known as Desians thrives on the misfortune, capturing humans for nefarious deeds. The only salvation lies in the Chosen, the title of the savior chosen by the Goddess Martel. Once the oracle descends on the Day of Prophecy, the world is then blessed with the Tower of Salvation, the symbol of the Goddess' power. The Chosen then must travel and unlock the seals around the world, with the final Seal located at the Tower of Salvation. It is at this final seal that the Chosen completes their journey and revitalizes the world.
Long ago, a hero by the name of Mithos emerged during the Ancient Kharlan War. Said war ravaged the land with ancient technology that drained the world's mana and ultimately ended up destroying the Giant Kharlan Tree, the source of all the world's mana. By sacrificing his life, Mithos was able to revive the tree, though his death caused the Goddess to return to the heavens in sorrow. She would have her angels, holy beings belonging to a society called Cruxis, teach the world of Mithos' sacrifice and spread her word to prevent another war from happening.
While in the heavens, evil half-elves known as Desians drained the world of its mana and sought to enslave humans. In order to protect the world, the Goddess would enlist the help of the Summon Spirits, who would put themselves in several places where mana flourished the most by creating seals. She created the Tower of Salvation on the Holy Ground of Kharlan--the place where Mithos sacrificed his life--and made it so high that it would reach her even in the heavens. However, the Desians' interference made it so that both Goddess and Summon Spirit alike were powerless to help, especially with the lack of mana in the world. To combat this, the Goddess decided to place a part of her power within a Cruxis Crystal and quietly grant it to one human upon their birth. This human would become the Chosen.
History shows that the Day of Prophecy is typically the day the Chosen comes of age, though there have been exceptions where the oracle descends sooner. Said oracle is a messenger of Cruxis that descends to meet the Chosen and sends them forth on their journey. However, the Chosen's pilgrimage is a dangerous one, and a Chosen has not succeeded in their journey in eight hundred years. Nonetheless, the world looks to the new Chosen for hope.
The seals are unlocked when the Chosen offers their prayers to the Goddess, and with each seal unlocked, the Chosen is blessed with the power of the angels.
The land is slowly becoming desolate as time moves on. Most people huddle to the few cities that are left, though some towns still flourish, particularly those closest to the seals. The Church of Martel is the central religion of the world and there is often at minimum a chapel in every town as well as the occasional House of Salvation on roads. The fear of Desians raiding towns to collect humans is shared by the populace, with only a few places able to properly defend themselves. Magic is not commonplace, as it is reserved for the reclusive race of elves. Humans cannot typically use magic, though they can enhance their abilities should they get their hands on Exspheres. Of course, the Desians are the primary supplier, though mercenaries are known to have them through one way or another.
Iselia The Village of Oracles A small town close to the Tower of Mana. Currently in a non-aggression treaty with the Desians, life in Iselia is an idyllic one. The town is surrounded by forests and is generally tucked away from the rest of the world. Home to the current Chosen of Mana.
Triet The Desert Oasis An oasis in the middle of a vast desert. It has seen its fair share of adventurers and is a common place to visit due to its proximity to the Triet Ruins. A fortune teller is currently housed there.
Izoold The Fishing Port A small fishing port. They supply the continent with fish and offer rides to the Thoda Geyser and Palmacosta. Supposedly there is a loan shark who is all too willing to help that lives here.
Palmacosta The Port City The largest city in the world. Grander than most other cities, Palmacosta is overseen by a governor and has a city guard that protects its citizens from the Desians. Boasts one of the largest markets in the world.
Asgard The City of Ruins A spiritual city. While windy, people often come to see the ruins. The city was once home to the Sylvarant Dynasty and has numerous records of Sylvarant's history.
Luin The City of Water A homely city built over a large lake. The people are lively and often shelter those that run away from the Human Ranches.
Hima The Village of Adventures A mountainside city. Many people come and go through here, climbing the mountain as a test of strength. A man who tames dragons has offered to take people to the Tower of Salvation.
Seal of Fire : Domain of the Ruler of Hellfire Located at the Triet Ruins, the Chosen prays to Efreet, the Summon Spirit of Fire. The process of the Chosen becoming an angel begins here.
Seal of Water : Domain of the Maiden of the Mist Located at the Thoda Geyser, the Chosen prays to Undine, the Summon Spirit of Water.
Seal of Wind : Domain of the Heavenly Messengers Located at the Balacruf Mausoleum, the Chosen prays to Sylph, the Summon Spirit of Wind.
Seal of Light : Domain of the Light of the Heavens Located at the Tower of Mana, the Chosen prays to Luna, the Summon Spirit of Light.
Final Seal Located at the Tower of Salvation. Here, the Chosen prays to the Goddess herself and becomes an angel wholly. With all the seals unlocked, the world is regenerated and the Desians suppressed.
This is based on a video game 'cause I'm unoriginal. So the tl;dr is I'm looking for a small group to run this with. I'm hoping for a varied cast of characters, not expecting too much interest but I thought I'd throw it out there. Ideally looking for active roleplayers, good quality posts, and people that like to communicate maybe.
The characters in the cast are either hired by the Church of Martel help to accompany the Chosen or people that may know them personally, it can be up to you to decide. I won't limit people's backgrounds on any battle experience they may have, but I'm not really looking for super overpowered gods, either.
