Name: Fortuna
Race: Elder Dragon
Appearance: Domain: Chance, Fortune and (previously) the weather
Skills: Cheating Chance: Descendants of the original clan that formed at the base of the mountain (notably some Leviathan(mortal) and Human groups) live incredibly lucky lives. Tides turn in their favour, lucky rescues from near-death situations.
Wheel of Fortune: When one holds a Fortune Scale, it begins to float and spin when the holder is in danger. The scale makes an active attempt to protect it’s weilder, to the point the weather will become erratic and destructive at the expense of everyone except that who holds it.
History:While some gods and Deities rely on ancient texts and books for historians to decipher, Fortuna’s tale is a very well-known one. It is built but one side of the story of the hell-raising partnership that is Law and Chance.
Fortuna was first met by humans in a fateful and unplanned encounter. The humans gazed in awe at the precious rock that appeared to stretch, creating a cloud-breaking mountain. Aspiring to reach its peak and find its secrets. As ten humans began to scale the mountain, to their horror it unfurled. A shining golden face met them in the sunlight, a dragon, curled up and disguised as the mountain. The humans told her of their admiration, and desire for the precious glow of her scales. She gifted them ten, one each, in whole form. These became known as the Fortune Scales. Human nature began to run its course, and they began fighting each other before they made it back down. Angry, Fortuna struck down a wrath of lightning, killing all ten men and sending the scales flying across the world. In disgust, she could already sense this was a race doomed to destroy itself by greed. She lay back in slumber, her peak shrouded in clouds as she gave rain and sunlight to the earth.
As far as bedtime stories go some people end the story here. A tale to scare children from being too greedy, but it is naive to think this was the end. Another goddess named Iustitia appeared before, and salvaged humans from its probable demise. She watched in anger as she gave them knowledge they should never be able to develop themselves. Believing in the almighty force of chance, she believed they once again would doom themselves to extinction. She watched them tear through other races, become savages from the guidance they were not ready for.
One last development forced Fortuna’s hand. As the Deities began waging war on one another, the humans began to influence this war, aiding at the side of Iustitia. Mortals, Deities, Law influence and Chance all intertwined in chaos. The mountain that lay protecting the weather rose to the skies, stirring the world into a frenzy. Fortuna left the weather temporarily in the hands of the Chaotic god Ianos to set back the balance of Law to Chaos.
A realm once in harmony became sectioned. Vast regions dried into deserts, wastelands arose of frost and ice. Tides of battles turned against the mortals, an almighty barrier of nature to prevent their meddling in the war of the gods. Iustitia, whatever her intentions, came to a confrontation with Fortuna. They gave each other an ultimatum. Fortuna’s was that mortals should not interfere with the will of the gods, and must not be saved from self-destruction. A swift fight broke out, but a lack of strength failed Fortuna. The scales of chance by mere coincidence flipped against her, her entire body pierced through with a spear. Her body tore itself apart, scattering what was once a precious, shimmering mountain into hot golden metal across the world. Her spirit resigned itself to the realm of the gods, allowing her now to influence chance through her connection to the world in the form of Gold. Iustitia’s future was not of Fortuna’s concern now, as the damage was done. Races from all over discovered this golden material and used it to create currency. This led almost every race that came across it to somewhat fall into a corrupt greed.
Fortuna’s body became so dwindled and scarce that her ability to control chance shrank. Only those descendants of the initial clan that worshiped the mountain, if they held a Fortune Scale, could have a connection to her now. And the chance of that happening? Who’s to say it’s not written into fate after all?
