The worst thing about mental illness is you have to look after yourself a disgusting amount. I know it's the only way to actually be in a fit state to look out for others, but it still feels wrong.

Judging by the Internet's definitions of introversion and extraversion, you'd think everyone's either an extreme hermit or a party animal with no in between.

Bio

A frazzled British thirtysomething cat mum with something of a tea addiction.

I like a wide range of RP genres, but have two absolute favourites: Pokemon and magical girls. (If someone manages to combine the two, I'll be VERY happy!) I post fairly regularly, but sometimes shit mental health days crop up - if that causes any delays, I'll try to resume posting ASAP.

Scrawl-filled notebook on her lap, Amber clapped with the other spectators. "Congratulations, that was great!" she called as Ty strode over, badge in one hand, the Igglybuff in the other. "I had no idea a Timburr could turn a log into a rock, I wonder how he does that? Just imagine the other applications that technique could have, for battle and otherwise... And seeing those moves Reaper practiced in action was quite something!"

She put away the notepad and stood up. That had been quite the experience, even for a non-challenger. She imagined the day she'd be the one up against Lan, testing out what she and her Pokemon had learned, but sadly it wouldn't be today. "Well, Aedre and I had better get going," she said as she approached Ty, "but if you're planning on doing the same, it's not like we'll be too far ahead once you've stopped by the Pokemon centre."

At Amber's words, Lan turned to Ty. If the boy wanted to heal his Pokemon right away, the monastery's facilities meant he didn't have to go all the way to the Pokemon centre. "Feel free to use the gym's healing machines, they're just in the other room," Lan told him, gesturing to a door across the hall.

Robes sweeping, he headed in the direction he'd signalled to heal up his own team. He placed the three Pokeballs in the machine, listening for the telltale beep, thinking which Pokemon to switch out for if some wanted to rest. There'd be at least one more battle before the morning was out, as reception had informed him of another challenger.
Jessamyn "Jess" Bailey

Jess tried to keep herself from visibly squirming. She looked up from the food, which would have been appetising any other time except now. "Well, not all emotions," she told the men. It was technically true, as Roxy's shield muted them to an extent. She just wasn't going to reveal any more about how limited that extent was if she could help it.

Mr Black, though, was still doing his utmost to get what he wanted, responding to Roxy's protest with a guilt trip. Lips pressed together, Jess thought back to something she'd once overheard her mom saying, about narcissistic parents, how they deflected blame and manipulated their children into thinking problems were their fault. "Roxy isn't selfish, I can tell you that," she replied, making sure her voice didn't rise with the anger. No selfish person would have put themselves in this situation for a stranger. "She'd just rather not be involved, even if her brother is. It isn't her responsibility."

She'd probably just gone and started another argument, but defending Roxy was all she could do. From the sheer level of guilt, she could tell Roxy cared about her brother, who was all too possibly another unwilling pawn in this. And Mr Black was exactly the kind of person to get at his daughter through that concern.
Everything ok @Mokley?

And oh wow @drewccapp, the already peppy girl is going to be on the equivalent of a massive caffeine high. I can imagine it already.
@Platinum Cobra Going to have a reply up soon, but just checking whether you'd like me to wait a bit for you to get a post in :)

For someone who usually relished being the centre of attention, Antoinetta wanted to disappear. She staggered to her seat on uneven shoes, nails digging into palms, thoughts racing for ways to remedy the situation without making it worse. Not an easy thing to do while the taunts all around grew ever crueller. If she couldn't deal with this, how would she handle the other challenges PMA was sure to present?

"Beeee?" Mellona fluttered over to check on her. The Combee, at least, was by her side through this despite the earlier Gust.

"It's fine," Netty insisted, although the tremble in her voice hinted otherwise. "If they can't recognise stars in the making, that's their problem." Her eyes stung with tears, but she fought them back. No way was she giving the bullies that satisfaction.

Tim, however, was the next one after Zaria to cry. Netty cringed. That would only add fuel to the fire, as she knew from experience. As the cool and calm guy - Troy - made his attempt to help, albeit a rather heavy handed one, Netty nodded. "You said it!" Not that his advice actually helped Zaria, who right away snapped back. Wincing again, Netty stared at the ground. The trick was to pretend to ignore it, but she couldn't exactly tell Zaria that now, not in front of these jerks.

Mellona flew over to Tim and Zaria, friendly smiles lighting up all three of her faces. While Combees primarily served their queen - or, if captive, their trainer - they were community oriented Pokemon. If there was any way Mel could help these two, she would, and one means of helping was to entertain. She launched into a waggle dance, her tiny body shaking from side to side as she twirled. Even if it didn't amuse them, it was a show of support.

Watching her Pokemon keep it together way better than she did, Antoinetta took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. "Then let's make sure we have the last laugh when we get to the top and they're all in our dust," she chipped in to the conversation. She stood up, holding on to the chair so she didn't topple again, and swept her eyes around the room at the bullies. "You hear that? How can you act like Pokemon masters to be when you can't even act your age? So just watch us. Believe it or not, by the end of the year you'll see us rather differently, as we show you how it's done."

More guffaws went up, which didn't surprise her, but it was only when Mellona stopped dancing that Netty realised her mistake. A cold sensation sank through her, settling in the pit of her stomach. Her 'rousing' speech was likely going to have the opposite effect, considering the burden she'd just placed on the group, and the way she'd inadvertently gone and egged on the other students.

If the standards had been high before, now they dwarfed Mt Coronet.

And now she wanted to disappear more than ever.

It was only a few minutes until the doors burst open again. Lan looked over as his newest challenger strode in with the same swagger he'd shown earlier, eager to battle. At once, some of the spectators began cheering Ty on as the picture from his trainer card appeared on a wall screen, next to a VS sign and the gym leader's photo. Beside each picture were three Pokeballs.

Displaying his usual stoicism, Lan stepped back into his place at the far end of the arena and nodded, his voice as calm as the spectators' encouragements were loud and lively. "Take your place, and let's start."

Amber took her place at the seating area once more, casting a glance at the doors every so often. Was everything ok? Was it just a matter of nerves before the battle, or was there more to it? This, it seemed, was already turning out to be another emotionally fraught day.

Just as she considered going to check on Ty, the doors swung open, the punk boy reappearing. No need to worry so much about everyone, Amber thought, leaning forward, not out of unease this time but enthusiasm. For all the other things on her mind, this was an official gym battle. A chance to see the skills of trainer and Pokemon truly put to the test. "Give it your all, Ty!" she called through the others' cheers. She whipped her notebook and pen from her bag, ready to start scribbling. "Hmm, I wonder how these battle moves will compare to the practice ones earlier."

@Ryona Zako No problem! And if you want to reply to Luminosity, no need to wait on me.
@Ogobrogo

The chaos was far from over, with Zaria not only stumbling AGAIN, but knocking someone else right out of her seat. "Oh for Arceus' sake," Antoinetta muttered, heading over to check on the two.

Not that the girl on the floor seemed fazed, smiling up from her wriggling Poke-pillow and greeting them as if nothing had happened. Well, that was to be expected, considering her equally nonchalant clothing choices. Netty raised an eyebrow. "Uh... Nice to meet you too...?" She read the barely legible scrawl that was the girl's name tag. Valerie. Like the Kalos based fashion designer, whose range was popular with coordinators all throughout Sinnoh. Ironic considering this girl thought a paint-splattered labcoat and Teddiursa slippers were appropriate attire for the first day at a prestigious school.

At the sound of snickering, Antoinetta's face turned red once more. All eyes were on them, and not in a good way. Taunts filled the air. Weirdos. Idiots. Losers. Her insides squirmed. No, no, this couldn't be happening all over again. She'd put her all into building up a good reputation at her last school, only to watch it come undone at this one. It only now struck her how high the standards would be here. Had joining PMA been a mistake?

Whether it had or hadn't, there was only one thing she could do - salvage the situation, just as Zaria tried to. Acting as unaffected by the jeers as a Forretress faced with a Poison type attack, Antoinetta stood tall and grinned. "Entertaining, huh? Just you wait, you'll know true entertainment once Mel and I get a few contest ribbons." She stepped back, gesturing to the Combee. As she did, she trod on the rucked fabric of Valerie's lab coat. Her foot shot out from under her. "Aah!" She landed on her rear end, more laughter going up around the room. Dammit, they were all like dominoes today.

She made to stand, toppling again as her shoe didn't comply. Looking down, she groaned. The heel had snapped right off of it.

Well, this start to the school year just got better and better.

@Ryona Zako That's ok, no need to edit, the implication was that the kelpie didn't quite get her, but ultimately I left it open for you to decide.

Brenton Ackerley

Right away, Brenton rushed towards the sound. Was this the sister Aubrey was talking about? Instead, when the lake came into view, so did a young boy thrashing in the water - and two green-skinned, sharp-toothed creatures. Brenton's eyes widened. Ok, there was no rational way to explain THAT.

With no time to think on it anyway, he sped up his sprint, taking action alongside the others. Freya's attack hit home, earning a garbled screech from the target. Spitting out oil-dark blood and two of its teeth, it flailed and grasped its long fingers at Freya's ankle, while the other creature fared little better as Marcus' branch swing knocked it back into the lake. When it tried to climb out, Brenton gave it a swift kick in the forehead.

To his bewilderment, the little boy stopped struggling and laughed. Not a sound of relief, but of amusement. "Well, that wasn't very nice," he said, eyes turning eerie pale blue as they flicked around Aina and the others with a mock accusing look. At once, the rest of his body transformed, the air shimmering as he swelled and contorted into a monstrous horse. Pondweed-mane dripping, white scales all over his body glinting as he moved, he lunged to grip Aina with his teeth.

Before Brenton could process the situation, he grabbed the utility knife from his pocket, flipping up the blade even as it felt unwieldy in his hand. "Leave her alone!" He knew how to chop through branches and vines, but defending against wild animals wasn't something he'd had to master. As clumsy as his desperation strike was, though, the horse whinnied as the blade swiped across its front leg. Flesh hissed as if the metal were hot, burn marks spreading over scaled skin.

Surprise flashed across Brenton's face, but he kept enough of his wits about him to call to the others over the chaos.

"Run!"

Aubrey Hughes

Aubrey had known this place had to have a sinister side beneath the sparkle, but this was something else. "Get away from that kid, you bastard!" she yelled, stomping on a lake goblin's hand before it could reach Freya or harm the boy - just as said 'kid' turned out not to be quite who or what he seemed.

She gasped as the trick became apparent, the boy's true, equine form showing. She was sure she'd seen illustrations like it before, but this wasn't the friendly water horse of storybooks...

Kelpie.

Not that it mattered what it was called. What mattered was getting the fuck away from it. Springing into movement, she glimpsed the knife slash across its leg, the red welts as if from a burn. Through her whirling thoughts, something else from the folktales came to mind. Iron. Of course...

"Quick! Does anyone have anything made of iron or steel?" she called, wrapping her arm around the torso of an injured Victor to support him. With her free hand, she unhooked her belt chain, ready to use it as a makeshift whip if necessary. Hauling the wounded guy along as fast as she could, she glanced over her shoulder. The kelpie started to clamber from the water, as did its two goblin friends, and Aubrey could only hope against hope their injuries would slow them down.
