Bio

Hello! I'm MsMorningstar, or Momo for short. I'm a college student in my early twenties, located in the Western United States. I have a deep appreciation for memes and vines (RIP Vine), so if you're a wandering soul feel free to drop a couple in my visitor messages. I like loom knitting, and I used to be a big reader but haven't touched a book in a while since I've been writing. I love procedural cop dramas, my favorite being Criminal Minds, though I guess it's technically a procedural FBI agent drama. Everything else I'm into, I'll tack on in a different section. I'm a big fan of RPing, though I do tend to fade in and out. Luckily, I've made some friends here who've helped me sink my hooks into the forum. Speaking of which, I'd like to give them their own section.

If you're uninterested in me rambling about these amazing guild members, feel free to move on to the next section.
  • @NorthernKraken: I knew I had to start with this lovely, Texan woman. She's definitely one of the brightest people I know. There's a reason why people come to her daily seeking help and advice. She pushes me to do what I love, even when I don't want to. For this, I'm extremely grateful. Thank you, Goblin Queen.
  • @c3p-0h: The coolest cool kid around, by far. Not to mention, the nothingness that will eventually swallow up our universe. Cep, even though you're way too awesome for me you somehow make me feel amazing. Your compliments really lift me up, and I hope someday I can repay you for all your kindness. Also, you gave me my nickname, and I'm eternally grateful.
  • @Damo021: You've been my buddy since the beginning of Red Hoods. Even if our characters don't end up together, they're still my OTP. Thank you for always offering to help me, and chatting with me about everything and anything.
  • @Almalthia: You've been off living your life and being the responsible adult I wish I was, and I commend you for that. Doesn't mean I don't miss you like hell, though. You're the best mom older sister ever, and I eagerly await the moments when you're online.
  • @RedVII: My honorary brother. I feel like I could talk to you about anything, so I usually do. You understand me when others don't, and I'll never stop being weird alongside you. You're the strangest person, and that's what makes you wonderful.
  • @ZAVAZggg: You're the angstiest EdgeLord I know, but I appreciate everything about you. You keep me in check, in a way not many others are capable of. You're always scheming, and I'm pretty sure you have a ten-step plan for world domination. Despite this, you've proven to be an amazing GM, and a great friend.
  • @Senhara: Screm

I listed a few of these in my About Me Section, but I'll list them again.

During the ride over to the Western District, Akari slowly withdrew into herself. She was psyching herself up, mentally preparing for what was to come. Despite the fact that this was a low-risk mission, she wanted her team to accomplish it effectively and with ease. Secretly, she hoped she would get the chance to engage in combat, but she didn't bother mentioning this to anyone. They'd likely see her as too eager. A partially true observation, but one she didn't want people thinking. When the Lieutenant spoke up, she straightened her posture and listened closely. Her only reaction was a slight nod at the end of the debriefing, excitement raising the hair on her arms and tracing lines up and down her back.

Once the Osprey landed, she turned to her teammates. It was a surprise that Kuni had joined them, but Akari didn't mind. She could be helpful, even if she was only operating from the safety of the Osprey. "So, what's the game plan? Kuni, bring up the map with the locations of the sensors." She said, nodding at the dark-haired girl. "Please." She added after a moment's thought, not wanting to come off as rude.

With the mission being low-risk, Kuni decided to move to the tablet control of Dee, her drone, and come down with her team. It was always preferable in her eyes to make sure that it operated well, and being there meant that she could help better than simply by looking through Dee's camera. After the Osprey landed and they all got off, Kuni made sure the drone was at her side, before hearing Akari speak to her. Nodding, she tapped her tablet and brought up the map with the landmarks of the sensors.

"Okay. Nearest sensor we need to take care of is to the south-east from us, approximately a kilometer away. The furtherest one is eight kilometers away. Do you want to work from the closest to furtherest one, or the other way?" Kuni asked, approaching the other two so they may also glance at the map, which was another benefit that they normally didn't have.

"Closest to furthest sounds ideal to me," Lucia replied as she climbed out of the osprey, stretched her arms, and started surveying the area. It was entirely routine, and nobody was expecting any kind of major conflict, but it never hurt to keep an eye out. Invaders were nothing if not unpredictable. "For starters, let's secure the area and make sure nothing is going to disturb us while we handle the repairs."

Lucia closed her eyes briefly as she willed her Drive to activate. Maltet's armor booted up within seconds, as evidenced by the ionic skirt appearing from her waist, and she began to make her way toward the sensor. Her eyes swept back and forth, watching for anything untoward or hostile. Moreso than the scattered and skittering Invaders that were effectively wildlife, that is.

Akari gave Kuni an appreciative glance before exiting the Osprey. She left just in time to see Lucia power her drive. Akari wasn't envious of her waist cape, but she couldn't say that it didn't look quite graceful on the French woman. Surveying the area, Akari let loose a small sigh through her nose when she didn't see anything. In all honesty, it was a good thing that there were no creatures in sight, but Akari despised these low-level missions. She couldn't wait until she was out of the Academy, and getting sent on missions of utmost importance. Her brother always had the best stories, and she couldn't wait until she was a part of that too.

Picking up her pace to catch up to Lucia, Akari wondered if it was the appropriate time for chit-chat. Probably not, but since there weren't any imminent threats around there was no harm in it. "So, once we get to the first sensor I'll stand guard while you fix it. If you'd like, we can switch off from there or stick to that for the entirety of the mission."

Not sure what else to talk about, Akari continued looking around, head swiveling this way and that. "So, how's your rooommate been treating you?" She finally asked, wondering if she'd even get a response.

"A sound plan," Lucia replied, "Switching off is fine with me."

"As for my roommate, it's going quite well," she continued, "There were a few communication hurdles, at least at first. But Cellica's a sweetheart, and we're getting along famously."

Akari smiled lightly at this news. It was always great to hear that roommates were doing well and getting along with each other. Her thoughts wandered to Fiore, her tiny Linker dormmate. She wondered how their team was faring. Filing that away as a question she would ask later, she took a moment to concentrate on her own Linker. They were nearing the first sensor now, and Akari wanted to ensure they wouldn't run into any issues. Turning towards Kuni, Akari cleared her throat to get the girl's attention.

"Kuni, is there anything in our immediate path or are we okay to advance?"

Having walked in silence for the majority of the way, with her drone Dee at her side, Kuni did notice the short exchange between her two teammates. It was nice to be on the field for a change. Especially since the conditions appeared to be rather ideal, or at least, they did for the mostpart. When Akari asked her the question, she focused for a moment. Sensing a few invaders, she instructed her drone to hover a bit higher, to try and get a better view of the surrounding area through the drone's camera on her tablet as well.

"Few invanders, but they appear to be lurking in the shadows of the plants." Came her response, and she also began scouting the area for any potential spots that they could use in case the invanders attacked.

What filtered on Dee's surveillance and what Kuni saw were accurate; multiple Invaders had been spotted. True to her word, none of them seemed to move in a position to attack. Though they were very aware of the drone's presence; some even turned their silver heads upwards, metallic surfaces concealing alien eyes that stared back at Kuni through her drone. All the same, there wasn't much cause for concern. At least initially. A sound of rending metal suddenly pierced through the air, followed short by something heavy thudding into the grassy ground.

Almost immediately the Invaders swiveled their heads in a joined direction before scampering loosely. The positions would be instantly recognizable to Kuni as a battle formation. So far they hadn't been engaged but something had sparked the Invaders to move on the offensive. More and more noises of torn metal echoed in the forest around Team Novae, only layered by the hustling sounds of the Invaders scurrying around. No doubt anything that moved against them would now be treated as hostile.

"Wait." Kuni suddenly said. The formation of the invanders quickly changed into a different one, and it was one Kuni really did not enjoy seeing. Their offensive formations. The hustling sounds from the invaders made Kuni wary, as something had triggered the Invaders into going into this kind of formation, and it didn't appear to have been caused by them.

"The Invanders switched to an offensive formation. I'd suggest we change our path. It may take us a bit longer, but we will be on somewhat higher ground compared to where we are now." Kuni told them "We just need to head a bit more south. It will be a slight detour, but a safer one."

"Higher ground would also possibly allow us to see what exactly has them so agitated," Lucia agreed. She'd stopped in her tracks and put one hand on the sword hilt at her belt the moment Kuni warned them, and her eyes were scanning through the gaps in the trees. For all the effort, however, she didn't spot anything.

"I think it's wise to adopt a more standard formation while we do so," she added as she started to strafe in a southbound direction, keepig her front toward the trees where Dee had originally headed, "Whatever it is out there could very well come after us if we're not careful. I'll take point, Kuni after me, and Akari if you'll guard the rear?"

Akari didn't wince at the sound of tearing metal, only cocking her head inquisitively as she wondered about the source of the noise. When Kuni informed them about the invader's offensive formation, her hands went to her pistols. She pulled them out of their holsters, trigger fingers resting on the side of the barrel for the time being. Discord and Harmony powered on with a slight whir, easing some of the anxiety that came with her immense anticipation. She felt secure holding them, ever since she had taken them out to the range when she was fifteen.

"Rear it is." Akari agreed, gesturing for her teammates to move forward. Once they started trudging along she took up the back end of their formation, even more attentive than before. "Any ideas what's causing that noise?" She asked, her voice loud enough to reach the front of their unit, but not by much. "Kuni, is it possible to send Dee scouting out a bit further? I don't want us to walk straight into whatever caused it."

There was no mistaking this; these were the sounds of combat. Or of massacre. In these times, it was difficult to tell the two apart. For Team Novae though, it would soon dip into the former as the scuttling sounds seemed to be driven towards their direction. Whatever had triggered the Invaders was now scaring them off, inadvertedly leading them right into the group of Psychers. The first to arrive popped its head out of the growth parallel to the group at the side. It paused, as if jostled in surprise to find the once cautionary group of students suddenly on the defensive.

But then again, it made sense. Now that they were being threatened, so too would it engage. Its head lowered closer to the forest floor. At the same time, the whisp-like wires protruding at either side of its head began to pulse and glow with a sickly orange coloration. They heated up, snapping like maddened electrical cables, whipping and sparking wherever they were in the air. Soon enough more Invaders that had been driven away arrived, though these lacked the surprise of its first breached. They too bristled their "whiskers", slowly leering at the trio of girls and moving forward slowly.

Before Kuni could react to Akari's question, she found herself listening to the sounds of combat. And then not long after, an Invander popped its head very close to them. The pause in its movements made her pause too, until it started making its whisps pulse and glow, something that was soon followed by more Invanders that were beginning to leer at the group.

Keeping her eyes on the first invander, Kuni couldn't help but wonder what drove them there in the first place "Cover me for a moment and I'll try to find both the safest area for us to retreat to, and see if I can figure out what caused this." She told her squadmates, before quickly turning her attention to the tablet at her hand, and beginning to instruct Dee to fly even higher and turn towards the direction the Invaders were coming from. If they could figure out what was driving the Invaders in their directions, then they will be able to think of the best course of action too.

When the first invader poked its head out from between the trees, there was a moment of pause as Akari watched it. The seconds its whiskers began to glow and pulse -whipping around like thin ropes of lightning- she raised Discord and Harmony, switching their settings so they would fire round discs of plasma rather than beams. She aimed Discord, preparing to fire a round between the invader's eyes. Before she could engage, more rustling sounded around them, and Akari peered at the rest of the invaders on the edge of her vision. When they began advancing, she smirked, ready for combat.

"I'll stay close to Kuni, start putting them down, Lucia." She commanded, raising her voice to be heard over the sound of combat all around them. With that, she took aim at the closest invader, squeezing her trigger and sending three discs of plasma about a quarter of the size of an average frisbee flying towards its face. Not waiting to see if her attacks struck, she whirled, firing at the other invaders.

The shots Akari had taken were true and firm, each disc of plasma hitting their mark. The first Invader that had looked at them the wrong way suddenly spurted, falling to its side in a crumbled heap of sparking flesh. On closer observation, one could see a good half of its face melted, having taken a direct blow from Akari's plasma shots. The act of fire had ignited the remaining Invader's motions. The cylinder-like cartridges located on the back of their necks hissed and pushed into their heads. Eyes lighting up, they leapt at the group of three with desire to maim and kill. Yet Akari's guns didn't stop firing, as one by one the Invaders were blown back with various bits of their bodies melting from the condensed plasma bullets.

"D'accord!" Lucia replied to Akari as she rushed forward to meet the Invader's charge. One of the incensed little machines took the opportunity to leap at her, only to be met with an edged beam wall as Lucia willed her saber to materialize and swung it upward to intercept the attacker. She hardly lost a step as she continued moving, keeping clear of Akari's line of fire while slashing her way through the pack. There were a fair amount of them, but careful and precise movements kept her from becoming surrounded as she continued to weave her sword around and directly through her targets one by one.

Meanwhile, Dee had finally identified the source of all their troubles. Moving about the forest like an animal was a red blur, leaping from Invader to Invader and tearing into them. At least now they knew the source of the metal tearing; almost immediately did the blur find itself barrelling towards their direction. As it sped out of Dee's sight of frame, a heavy thud sounded right beside the group. Almost shaking the ground itself, the Invaders charging at them gave slight pause, realizing the one causing their trouble had just appeared. The disemboded head of one of their own still hung from the jaws of its bearer, the girl uncaring of the alien-like blood dripping out of it.

At least until some of it got in her mouth, of which she promptly spat the metallic head away and rubbed at her tongue. "Ugh, ugghh! Fucking nasty...."

With Akari providing cover, Kuni was capable of seeing through Dee's camera the source of what pushed the invaders towards them. Barely a moment later, and the girl vanished from the line of Dee's sight. She placed instructions into to the drone to survey the surrounding area further, but before she could take a look at the footage, the girl that Dee's camera spotted before arrived next to them. Baring jaws, one of which had an Invader's head on it, Kuni couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

"R.R.?" She muttered briefly, before realizing this was no time to get distracted. Just because the invaders that were around killed rather rapidly, it didn't mean they were out of danger just yet. Though the surprise appearance of R.R. made Kuni feel as though they should be even more careful than before. After all, they were previously told that it was relatively safe, and that the scouting report came from Team Chaotix.

The remaining invaders, though momentarily frozen, quickly regrouped. Their fear upon seeing their biggest foe -if they were even able to experience that basic emotion- was quickly replaced with rage. Gathering into small bunches, they launched themselves at the four girls, with the largest group going straight for R.R.'s head.

Akari raised her twin pistols to defend herself against her own group of invaders, before becoming aware of the ones that were going straight for Kuni. Their Linker. Debatably the most important member of their team. She knew Lucia and R.R. could defend themselves with ease, but Kuni was their weak link and needed some form of protection. Plus, Akari had grown slightly attached to the girl after working with her for so long. She wouldn't let her go down one of the few times she had decided to join them on the field.

Switching aim with Discord, she focused on nailing each of the invaders that had thrown themselves at Kuni. At the same time, she fired Harmony blindly at the invaders who went for her. She could hear the sound of metal collapsing against the ground in her right ear, and the corners of her lips tugged up. Had she really taken them out? "Kuni! Hover!" She shouted, just before the wind got knocked out of her, an invader barreling into her side. Apparently not.

Cursing as electric whiskers connected with her flesh, Akari praised the radiation that had given her the ability to generate her passive force field. Otherwise, the skin protecting her ribcage would have been seared. Summoning up Concussion at her side, she sent the invader flying back with a medium sized blast. Twisting, she quickly sent a few discs into its metallic body so it couldn't get back up and ram into her again. Glancing up to see if Kuni had listened to her, she went back to firing at the invaders, keeping them as far away from her and her Linker as possible, knowing that Kuni would have to come back to the ground eventually.

Lucia whirled around at the sound of a heavy thud as an incredibly fast object suddenly entered the area. She held Maltet's sword at the ready, certain by the reactions of the Invaders that this new arrival was responsible for the agitation they'd seen before. If it was an enemy... but then she realized she needn't carry that concern, or so she realized as she noted the long, bright red hair and massive claws the party crasher was sporting. This could only be R.R, the almost feral Striker of Chaotix. But what was she doing here? Chaotix had handled the scouting and given the All Clear report, so why was R.R. here, separated from her team?

Her focus was torn away from these questions by a mechanical whirring that sounded like a war cry as two more Invaders boldly ran at her. Spinning her sword in her hand, Lucia stepped to the side at the last moment and dissected the first one with a horizontal followed by a vertical slash, then swung around and gave its brother the same cross section before it even reached her. As she prepared to resume her lethal dance however, Akari's cursing drew her attention behind her to where her Gunner was wrestling with one Invader while several more were taking the opportunity to target Kuni!

"Merde!" Lucia hissed as she spun and directed her focus to her armored boots, signaling them to deploy bursts of energy from the soles to rapidly accelerate her through the air back toward her Linker. With well-practiced steps she cut the bursts at roughly the halfway point and shifted her body weight to lead with her legs on the landing, sliding across the ground and coming to a stop directly between Kuni and her would-be assailants. Her left arm came up, and with a small flash an energy barrier blossomed out from it that two Invaders collided with at the same time. With a snarl Lucia swung the shield outward to knock the two of them away before deftly beheading both of them in midair with a pair of swift sword strikes. From there she stood her ground, waiting for any of the others to test their luck against her sword if they dared.

"Eh. The fucking fuck are you looking at?" R.R. turned her head at the launched Invaders jumping at her. No sooner did they leave the ground did they rejoin it in pieces. Massive clawed gauntlets that could only be an Armament had sent them into the next life, R.R. reducing her attackers into piles of leaked fluids and torn apart metal in shot time. A few slashes was all that was needed for her and she looked back to see what the others were up to. "Ah man. Riyame's gonna scold me if I let someone die around here. Oh hey, you fucking got em!"

Her own enemies dealt with, R.R. was happy to watch from the sidelines as the Invaders briefly got a hit on Akari; only to be swiftly met with retaliation of their own. By now their number had been dwindling and it didn't look like they had wanted to start a fight. The majority of the Invader's number, as few as they were of what was left, began backpedaling away to retreat. Akari's shots were successful in leading them away from Kuni and the way R.R. flexed her claws didn't insure a victory.

Soon the small area was being cleared, the Invaders leaving behind their fallen in hunks of alien corpses. "Yeah, yeah, we fucking did it, awooo!" R.R. cheered bouncing in place as she watched the aliens scamper about. Whether they would be heading right into another team was up in the air, but not really Team Novae's problem. Speaking of which... "Oh, right. Uh....who the hell are you?" R.R. asked, as if she had only now noticed the team she had run into. If she was aware of the trouble she had caused for them, she didn't show it, staring blankly.

The Invaders seemed to have decided to not give up just yet, and started an assault againts each of them. Luckily for her, Lucia and Akari came to her defence, and the latter instructed her to use her psychic drive. Doing as instructed, Kuni focused on herself, and after a moment, a blue aura would surround her, and slowly she would rise above the ground. When she reached a three meter height, she decided that was enough, and then moved her attention to the tablet once more, using this safe moment as a chance to try and look over the footage that came from Dee.

Between Akari and R.R., it seemed as though they were holding out very well. And soon enough, the remaining invanders began to run away. Once it appeared to be safe enough, Kuni lowered herself back down, and upon landing, let out a sigh. She kept looking through Dee's footage "It appears we're safe for the moment. Thanks Akari, Lucia." She said, offering a nod to her teammate, before turning to look at R.R., who just presented them with a slightly odd question. For some reason, Kuni figured that R.R. would know who others from the academy were, considering they saw each other at the academy on a regular basis. Deciding to leave the response to the other two, she tapped on the tablet once more, turning Dee to the direction of the first sensor "The path appears to the sensor appears to be clear for now." She told everyone.

Once the remaining attackers turned tail, and Kuni was back safely on the ground, Akari slipped Discord and Harmony into their hoslters. They remained active for a few moments, before shutting off with a short whine. She looked in the direction the invaders had scuttled off to, hoping they ran into another team and got slaughtered. When R.R. spoke, Akari turned to face her and grinned at her enthusiasm. It was a bit wounding that she didn't recognize them, but Akari waved it off.

"Team Novae," She began, nodding towards Lucia. "That's Lucia Juste-Enfant, our Striker." Her head bobbed in Kuni's direction. "And that's Kuni Durant, our Linker. I'm Akari Saito, Team Novae's Gunner." She stuck her thumb into her chest when she mentioned herself, not bothering to hold out a hand for R.R. to shake. For all she knew, R.R. would take the opportunity to bite it off. "It's a pleasure, R.R."

"If the way is clear," Lucia added as she disengaged her sword and notched it back on her belt, "Then we should continue on. But first, R.R... why were you running around the forest slaughtering Invaders? Aside from the obvious I mean. What happened to the rest of your team?" Granted, expecting a clear answer from the redhead Striker might be overzealous in and of itself, but it was pertinent to ask nonetheless.

Raising her limbs up one by one, Mariette let them fall back onto the bed with an exaggerated thump. She had stopped midway through unpacking, figuring she could do it any other time. Her stay at the Academy would be lengthy, after all. Now, she was just bored. At first, she had been waiting for Lillie on the couch, having set up a glass of milk and a platter of Ike's cookies for her on the coffee table. Under which, she placed Ike's note, still refraining from reading it despite the itch that she felt whenever she walked past it. Soon after she had settled on the couch, she had lifted herself up from it and wandered into her room. And there she remained, having done everything in the span of about ten minutes. None of this was unusual for her, except for preparing the cookies and milk for her mage. She always had to occupy herself in some way, and when something stopped entertaining her she switched to a new task. Now, though, her mind was occupied with a single thought. Where was Lilie?

She wanted to wait for her, and make a proper introduction...but she had nothing else to do other than look for her. Picking herself up off of her plush mattress, she went into the bathroom and straightened her hair and clothing. She wasn't necessarily pleased with how she looked, but it would have to do. She considered spraying on some perfume, but she didn't want her mage to think she was trying to hard. On the way out of her dorm, she snatched Ikelos' note up from underneath the platter and started on her way out. Backtracking, she grabbed a cookie, twisting it in her hand and marveling at the golden brown surface. If only she could eat it, and experience what it was like to chew. Taking her items with her, Mariette finally exited the building.

She certainly didn't have to travel far, spotting delicate white hair the instant she stepped into the cul-de-sac. It was pleasing to see that Lilie was sociable, currently interacting with another mage that Mariette didn't know. Clearing her throat to announce her arrival, she neared the two mages. Not wanting to completely disregard the young woman who wasn't Lilie, she smiled kindly at her before turning her attention to her mage and beginning a semi-formal introduction.

"You must be Lilie, it's a pleasure to meet you and your friend. I'm Countess Mariette, of the Eve family, and I'll be taking care of you from now on." She passed Lilie the cookie and Ike's note, not giving her a chance to read it before she began speaking again. "Those are from your previous caretaker, Count Ikelos."

Eliza

Eliza placed her knapsack in the carriage her mentor had called for her. Inside the soft leather bag were chunks of clay, a journal filled with handwritten notes, materials for her bottled spells and, of course, charms and inanimate creatures of all different varieties. The carriage itself was worn, with chips of black paint missing and slight chinks in the wood. The two horses that were assigned to pull the carriage were old, but they looked well fed and the coachman seemed to take care of them. Eliza couldn't be happier. It was as if she were a babe, taking her first steps out into the world without the guidance of her parent. She would no longer be coddled. The trials and tribulations she would face as she learned to combat evil would be great. In the end, she would come out a better, more learned person. The coachman took his place after checking the horses' gear and gave Eliza the okay to get in. With a grin, Eliza placed her foot on the small stepping stool and began climbing in.

"Are you ready?" Eliza jumped as the smooth, somewhat melancholy tones of her mentor's voice flitted through the air and struck her ears. Stepping off the stool, she turned and threw her fist over her heart -effectively showing off her branded forearm- before bowing. It was the standard greeting between mentor and student. At least, it was what he had taught her to do upon seeing him. When she rose from her bow, he waved dismissively, stepping closer and wrapping her up in a warm embrace. "I'll miss you dearly."

Eliza's eyes widened at the strength of his hold and his choice of words. During their two years together they had shared almost every meal, chattered endlessly about the different types of magic, and on occasion dived into their pasts, sharing secrets that no one else knew. They had grown close, but it was always a surprise when he showered her with affection, preferring to keep their relationship platonic. He released her only moments after Eliza relaxed into his grip and returned the hug, looking her up and down to see if she truly was ready to go.

"I've got everything I need, they'll provide us with food at the Keep I'm sure." She wasn't a picky eater, but she rarely found herself craving food, which was why she hadn't packed any for the short journey. Perhaps once she began training she'd grow more hungry. "I'll miss you, but I should be on my way."

He nodded, though it was barely perceptible. Tears stung the corners of Eliza's eyes without warning, so she hurriedly turned and climbed into the coach. Reaching outside the carriage, she gestured to the driver and in seconds they were moving. Turning to face her mentor one last time, she gave him her brightest smile before settling back and closing her eyes.

~

The ride to the Keep was relatively short, and Eliza occupied herself by making small figures out of the clay she had packed. The roads were bumpy, and the results were usually shoddy at best so she ended up squishing them between her fingers. She had plenty of clay beings that she had spent days crafting -all currently in cases to preserve their shape- so she didn't mind destroying the creations she spent only a few minutes on.

Once the carriage halted, she knew they had arrived. Outside, she could hear men and women alike shouting. Looking out the window, she realized they were herding them towards the drawbridge. Once she crossed, she would be trapped inside the Keep if they decided to raise it. Excitement, as well as a healthy dose of anxiety, ran up and down her spine at the thought. She opened the door of her carriage, careful not to hit anyone with it, and ventured out after slipping on her knapsack.

Almost immediately, she bumped into a man with dark, medium length hair and a large scar running down his left arm. Eliza tried not to stare hoping he didn't notice the way her eyes widened upon seeing it. She had experienced immense pain during her branding, but whatever had caused his scarring must've hurt to the same degree or even worse. When she took the time to pry her eyes away from the scar and look up at his face, she noticed he was rather striking.

Colin

Down the back of a back alley, about as close to the Red Hoods’ keep as Colin could afford to stay (which was, suffice to say, not particularly close), The Hung Shark was a surprisingly nice little tavern. Sure, the drink was very obviously watered down, and Colin didn’t know what mysterious and terrible curse the barmaid had been placed under that made her talk so much, but it had a good atmosphere, taxidermied shark swinging from the ceiling supports notwithstanding.

It had been a rowdy crowd, despite the ‘alcohol’ being served, and the carnage littering the previously well put together front of house meant that he had to carefully pick his way through a minefield of smashed bar stools and sticky puddles of something that he hoped to god was just spilt beer. He paused mid step, best to make one less check that he had everything with him before setting off. He set his stuffed pack down on one of the less wobbly chairs and released the hide string keeping it shut. A quick inventory revealed that he had everything he needed for travel, although his canteen was only half full, and he was a fair few coins shorter than he should’ve been. Satisfied, he closed the bag again and clipped his bow and half-full quiver of arrows to the back. He swung it over a shoulder and did a quick check to ensure his twin daggers, a gift and therefore perhaps the nicest items he owned, were still secured to his belt. They were, so he made for the door.

The sun had barely started to rise, and tomato clouds tipped orange light through the single window near the ceiling. What was it Angus used to say about red skies in the morning? Nothing good, that was for certain. Not there was a whole lot he could do about it. He stifled a yawn. The noise, not so much drifting as cannonballing into his room, had kept him up late into the night. Not that Colin minded at the time, in fact, after the long stretches of empty countryside on the journey up, it had been comforting to be around the noise and bustle of a city tavern again. He’d missed it, really; the atmosphere, the sounds of regular people enjoying themselves on a regular night, pouring out their sorrows and songs in equal measure…

Andi had said he would.

He allowed himself a not-quite-smile at that thought of his old boss, but then he pushed it away. He didn’t have time for that. As if to remind him just how little he had time for it, his scar itched. Almost of its own volition, his right hand reached towards the spot just where his rolled-up sleeves stopped, and scratched, stubby nails digging into the twisted, knotted scar tissue. He snatched it away when he realised what he was doing, it was a bad habit, one that he probably would have an easier time ceasing if he ever remembered to apply the ointment that Andi had found for that reason. Forcefully, he pulled his sleeves back down in order to serve as a deterrent, and made his way, finally, out onto the empty, pre-morning streets of Duncaster.

~

Colin saw the Red Hood Keep long before he arrived, it was hard to miss - grey stone harsh against the opulent buildings that made up central Duncaster. He made quick time through the immaculately cobbled streets, eyes drawn to the twisting spires and marbled walls, the warm, yeasty scent of baking bread drifting through the streets. What would it be like to live somewhere like this? It was unlikely the residents of these buildings had to sleep with a knife beneath their pillow and barricade their doors every full moon. He was uncomfortable, skin crawling with a feeling that he couldn’t quite place as he became very aware of his own scuffed, uncomfortable boots and oft-mended clothing. This wasn’t a place for the likes of him.

Soon, he arrived at the keep. He paused, taking in the scene around him. It was impressive to say the least. What was less impressive, however, was when a rickety carriage almost ran him over. He stumbled somewhat, before straightening himself, only to be almost bumped into again. He turned, irritation twisting in his stomach as prepared to face his assailant, only to be met by a young woman.

He couldn’t help but squirm as he noticed her soft brown eyes immediately flicking to the arm. He must have rolled his sleeves up during the walk and not noticed. It was too late now, he supposed, as he noticed a few others staring at the gnarled appendage. He knew what it looked like, what it said about him and his life, and the judgement it drew wasn’t something he particularly cared for.

The woman though, her eyes… he didn’t see judgement. Just kindness, and he instantly warmed to her.

"My apologies! I didn't mean to slam into you." She began, offering up a small smile. "I'm Eliza, and you are?"

“’S all right, no harm done” he smiled in return, his accent, though softened by the years he spent in Sinstead, was clearly of Northern origin, “I’m Colin, you here for the initiation?"

Eliza's grin only widened upon hearing his accent. She had grown accustomed to the throaty way Northerner's annunciated their words during her time as a barmaid. Once she processed what he had said, she let loose a light chuckle. "I suppose I don't look the part, do I?" Where he had toned muscles and loved weaponry strapped to his back, she had little more than her charms and her overwhelming spirit. This would have to change before she got struck down on the field due to her lack of skill. "But yes, I am here for initiation."

"Are you any good with that bow of yours? Or do you have some other trick up your sleeve?" She asked him, beginning to walk. Her strides were small, in the hopes that he would follow alongside her. She was curious about Colin. Being the first person she met on her journey toward greatness made him all the more intriguing.

“Shit, sorry, that, err, I didn’t mean you weren’t…” his ears burned as he stumbled over his words, the thought that he might’ve made her feel insecure with his carelessness impossible to ignore. He pushed away the impulse to scratch at the scar, “I just meant, y’know, that I am too, here for the initiation,” he paused momentarily as she started to walk towards the drawbridge, before quickly making to follow. There was something about Eliza, more than just friendliness, she just seemed… light, in a way that not a lot of people were, and that couldn’t really be ignored once you’d noticed it.

At her question about his bow, his tone became enthused, “You mean Nessie? Yeah, I can shoot an arrow into a bloodsucker if that’s what you’re on about, not as good as the hoods archers though, although hopefully I might get to be one day,” he loved archery, there was something about that moment of utter concentration, that breath, and then… he pulled himself away from the momentary distraction, “I s’pose I can stab pretty good too,” he continued, “but generally if a vamp’s that close you’ve gone wrong somewhere down the line.”

He tried to figure out what Eliza’s preferred style of combat might be. He couldn’t see any visible weapons on her person, and regardless, her small frame meant she’d probably struggle to even lift the kinds of swords some of the gathered crowds were lugging around, never mind fight with one. That left only one option really, “So…” he began nervously, “I'm guessing you do some sort of magic?”

Eliza accepted his apology with a dismissive wave. She had made the assumption that he hadn't meant to offend her, he just didn't seem like that type of man. She also wasn't one to linger on harsh words, even if they slandered her race or family. Many considered her a pushover because of this, but she was keen on taking the high ground. After all, everyone she knew had moments of weakness where they said the wrong thing without meaning it, and she was no exception. Before she had made amends with the people of her past, she had been filled with regret at everything she had let slip whilst drunk or angry. Now that she had done all the fixing her heart required, she retained the ability to remain remorseless.

Eliza gave Colin her utmost attention as he spoke, her eyes lighting up with mirth as he told her his bow's pet name. When he regaled her with his talk of slaying vampires, she couldn't help but look around at their audience. She assumed there were vampires in the crowd, sentenced to serve under the Red Hoods. Still, she didn't bother to shush Colin, because she didn't particularly care for the vampiric race. It was wrong of her, but her religious teachings told her that vampires were not embraced by the Goddess, as they feasted upon the lifeblood of humans and Spellcasters alike. Perhaps once she got to know what their kind was like, she'd begin to understand them and sympathize with them more. For the time being, she would keep her prejudice.

"I'd hate to be on the receiving end of a vampire's outburst." She commented, watching as his gaze wandered over her. Not in a strange, perverted way. It was more like he was sizing her up, trying to see what she had to offer. She could see the shift in his gaze, the moment he noticed that she carried no weapons, and came to the conclusion that she must be a magic user. Her continuous smile faltered, but she took off her knapsack anyways and began to rummage through it, eager to show him that magic was more fun than frightful. Digging out a case labeled 'flight', she opened it to reveal a painted clay butterfly. Though the clay was still soft, it was incredibly lifelike, with veins in its thin wings and two spindly antennae. She also pulled out one of her bottled spells, this one labeled 'ice'. It contained a small blue flower and a few crystals, all floating in a clear, iridescent liquid. She offered them up Colin, hoping to impress him.

"I'm a charm maker. I can bring that butterfly to life, and that bottle is actually an elemental spell! If I activated it, your hand would be frozen in a block of ice." She showed off her toothy grin, incredibly proud of her work. It had taken a week to craft that butterfly and nearly a month of going through different recipes to finally perfect the ice-in-a-bottle spell. "If you're curious about how anything works, I can explain it to you. It's nothing bad, I swear."

Colin watched as she retrieved a small case, curious in spite of himself. In truth, he didn’t know very much about magic. Street performers mostly, especially in recent years, hoping to earn coin with tricks of the eye and the mind. He’d heard rumours of course, of dark practitioners, and sacred things traded away down dimly lit alleys in exchange for a moment indulging in fantasy, or more often, revenge.

Eliza, bless her heart, did not look like the type be doing anything down a back alley, dimly lit or otherwise.

And so, he allowed himself to indulge his curiosity as she handed him the beautiful sculpture. He took it in his hand, gently, afraid to break it. Colin had never seen anything like it before in his life, it was soft and delicate, although it was clearly modelled from clay, he could not fathom how. It looked like all he would have to do would be to blink, and it might fly away before his very eyes. The bottle, although less spectacular, was equally beautiful. Enamoured, he held it to the light for a better view, allowing the sun to shine through and dance between the crystals.

He listened diligently to her explanation, the passion she had for her work obvious in her expression and the way she spoke. He could imagine her, sat in a little workshop, or wherever it was spellcasters honed their craft, pouring hours into the creations she’d presented. But still, it seemed… he wasn’t sure, but there was a part of him that recoiled from the idea of the otherworldly, “That’s… amazing, really, but isn’t it, I dunno, risky to be messing around with stuff like that?” He gave a barely perceptible frown, considering the bottle, “I mean, you could really hurt someone with something like this if you did it wrong or something,” he handed the objects back to her, right hand twitching slightly towards his left at that thought, “sorry if that seems harsh, in all honesty I don’t really know much about magic and stuff, for all I know it’s perfectly safe.” his brow wrinkled, a thought crossing his mind, "Do you think... do you think you could maybe show me, sometime? How it works and all that? I would like to know more, even if it is risky. Only if you want to, of course."

Retrieving her items, Eliza took a quick glance at her surroundings. Surprisingly, during their brief conversation, they had made it all the way to the drawbridge. Countless amounts of people were funneled into the opening of the Keep, to the point where Eliza wondered how they would all manage to fit inside. She hoped there wouldn't be any conflict once they entered, but with all the different personalities she was sure something would happen. Of course, the threatening presence of the Red Hoods would keep some people quiet. Pausing, she waited for a space in the crowd so they could continue walking side-by-side without interrupting the conversation. It was quite an interesting one, after all. She had always had a difficult time convincing people that magic was a good thing. She supposed it was similar to the way a vampire would have a difficult time convincing someone that they weren't evil. Some people were more open to the idea, while others had shut off their mind completely. She could tell that Colin was walking the line, his scale balanced between the two ideas. She wanted to tip him towards acceptance because there were so many people out there that didn't accept her kind.

"The same way you could mortally wound someone by throwing your knives around carelessly, I could mortally wound someone by setting off a charm bottle without warning." She began, flipping her knapsack's cover shut and slipping it over her shoulders once again. "It all depends on how the magic is being used. Some mages use it for evil deeds, and there are others that utilize it for the greater good. It's a weapon, but so is Nessie." Of course, there were mages who only used magic for pleasure, but she'd explain that to him later. When he commented on the fact that magic could be completely sound, she paused, reaching out to grab his good arm and halting him for a moment. A few people behind them cursed at the interference, but she didn't mind. Her eyes went hard, and her pitch turned low. "That being said, never blindly trust magic. Yes, there are some practices that are 'perfectly safe', but there are others that appear safe on the surface only to end up being devastating. That is how most mages end up being taken in by the dark arts."

Releasing him, her eyes softened once more and she continued walking. Merrily, she nodded her head at his final suggestion. "I'd love to show you some things about the safer side of magic, if you could show me how to wield a dagger." She figured she would at least try to get something out of this. As much as she loved teaching people, she loved being taught even more. Plus, if her magic ever failed her, she would need a backup.

She had a point, he supposed, if he looked at it from that point of view, then it made sense. Magic was a tool, like Nessie, like his knives, like the swords and the armor carried by the people around them, and in a sense, like the red cloaks worn by the hoods themselves - all ways to exert power over another, whether for good or for bad. At their heart, spellcasters were essentially human, just with the ability to do the things a normal human could only want to. Not like the monsters - they weren’t motivated by a maddening thirst rendering them soulless creatures, nor driven mad by the tides of the moon and the beast, both literal and metaphorical, inside.

A hand, out of nowhere, grabbed his arm. For a moment, his heart stuttered, muscles tensed, and then he relaxed. Just Eliza. He would have laughed at himself and his overreaction if he hadn’t noticed her voice taking on a very serious tone. Her eyes darkened, and he grew wary in response as she spoke, warning him of the dangers of magic, the rest of the world seeming to fade into nonimportance in response.

And then, just like that, she was off again. Colin took a moment to recover from the sudden change back to their light-hearted tone but was soon following. He grinned at her offer “Sure, I can show you a few things, word of warning though, I’ve mostly only ever been the student, not the teacher. It’s a useful skill to have though, especially if you get cornered or something.”

They were approaching the inside of the keep, and Colin couldn’t help but momentarily forget about his conversation partner, opting instead to stare in open-mouthed awe. It was huge! If the outside of the keep made little attempt to match its surroundings, then the inside was quite the opposite; marbled walls trimmed with what surely mustn’t have been real gold, lacquered wood flooring, so shiny he was scared to step on it, a lush red carpet, draped in opulent heaps over a central stage, and not to mention the amount of people. It was yet another new experience, in a day that had already been full of them, and Colin’s head was starting to spin with all the new information.

The older redcoats stared at them as Colin and Eliza, along with what he assumed must be the other new initiates thanks to their lack of the characteristic red cloaks, were ushered to the centre of the room. A thrill of dread ran through him. What was going to be asked of them? He glanced at Eliza - at least he had someone he seemed to get along with for whatever lay ahead.

He was ready, he decided. There was no goin-

Watch it, dobber!” Colin winced at the sudden unexpected impact and the accompanying harsh words. He’d done it again, hadn’t he? He was not having a good day as far as the whole ‘not bumping into people’ thing went. He looked up at the man - he had a reedy build, but judging from the combination of battle scars, red cloak, and the authoritative way he moved about the keep, he was not someone to be crossed.

He tried to hide the angry aching of his arm, biting down on the inside of his cheek. It wasn’t that bad, and the impact had been quite hard. He held up his other hand to concede, “Sorry, didn’t see you there,” he said, trying not to invoke the man’s apparently bottomless well of ire.

Upon entering the Keep, Eliza marveled at the magnificent interior. The outside had appeared stony and cold, but the inside offered a touch of lavishness that she hadn't been expecting. She only hoped that this would carry into their bedrooms, but it was more than likely that they were going to be sleeping on the ground since there were so many people to accommodate. She turned to look at Colin, her brow furrowing when she wasn't able to spot him. After a few moments of frantic searching, she narrowed in on him. He had been pushed back a few paces by the flood of people, and though she couldn't hear what he was saying over all the chatter in the hall, she saw his lips moving as he spoke to a man in a red cloak.

Attempting to get back to him, she paused upon seeing a flash of deep red hair. Hair that belonged to someone just a tad bit shorter than she. To a woman in loose-fitting clothing that concealed a beautiful figure she had only seen once, on accident. But, it simply couldn't be her, could it? Glancing between Colin and the woman, she decided she would finish up her conversation and pray she could find the girl again. Rushing through the crowd towards Colin, she tapped him on his good shoulder and hurriedly said, "I have an old friend to catch up with, but I promise I'll find you later. Remember our deal!"

With that, she was off. The Goddess must've blessed her path because it only took a few short minutes to find her again. Eliza would recognize those grey eyes anywhere. After all, they had been good friends up until last month. "Brighid?" She questioned, reaching out to grasp the girl on the shoulder.

@TheWindel

I'd enjoy having a discord.
Great, added it to my CS.
@KoL@TheWindel

I was thinking of updating my CS with how far each sized orb can toss someone, as I feel like this is information that needs to stay consistent.
  • A small orb, being the size a lemon, can toss someone Akari's weight around ten/fifteen feet.
  • A medium-sized orb, being the size of a grapefruit, would be able to launch someone her weight about thirty feet.
  • A large orb, which is the size of a bowling ball, would be capable of launching someone her weight around fifty/sixty feet.
  • A massive orb (something Akari would only be able to create once before completely exhausting herself) the size of a beach ball, would be able to launch someone in a full suit of light-medium weight armor thirty feet.

Does this sound alright?

Name:
Akari Saito

Age:
17

Gender:
Female

Class:
Gunner

Nationality:
Japanese

Appearance:
  • Height: 5 Feet 7 Inches
  • Weight: 150 Lbs
  • Build: Athletic

Bio:
Akari spent her early years in an orphanage, but she didn't mope or whine during her stay. She remained positive, after all, she had never known her real parents so she didn't feel attached to them or worry about them leaving her. Her optimism soon led to her adoption, and at the age of five, she was in a new home.

Akari's older brother, Keiran, was a big influence in her life. Six years older than her, he was her protector and mentor. So, when he got accepted into The 2nd Tactical as a Striker she knew she had to follow in his footsteps. She was more than driven, starting a vigorous training regimen at the age of twelve. She soon learned that close quarters combat wasn't her calling, and decided to work with long-range weaponry instead, a field she was far more comfortable in.

Akari still carries the drive she developed when she was twelve. There are times when she can be too driven, so focused on a goal that she forgets to eat and sleep. Luckily, she had a loving family that taught her the importance of self-care. Adaptable, she usually adjusts to new situations with an easy smile. Whenever she's thrown into battle, she becomes hyper-focused and does what it takes to win.

Armament:

Akari's dual pistols, Discord (left-hand) and Harmony (right-hand) are Energy weapons. They shoot beams, discs, and bolts of plasma from the triangular muzzle depending on what they're set to. Equipped with a biometric scanner on the trigger, Discord and Harmony can't be shot by anyone whose fingerprint isn't recognized. The clips of gas can take up to two days of frequent shooting to run out, and are interchangeable as well as refillable. Discord and Harmony are extremely lightweight in comparison to most handguns, making them perfect for someone who utilizes speed and rapid-fire attacks.

Psychic Drive:
Akari's Psychic Drive, Concussion, is the ability to generate small orbs of yellowish aura. Upon striking their intended target, these orbs create a concussive blast (the force of which depends on the size of the sphere) that sends the target flying. Akari utilizes these blasts by creating small spheres at her feet. Once they touch the ground below her, the resulting blast launches her around. She's become adept at controlling the intensity of the blast and where she lands, but she has been known to over/underestimate the size of the orbs and launching herself too much or too little. She also has a limit as far as how many balls she can create. At this time, she can only create five medium-sized orbs (around the size of a grapefruit), two large orbs (bowling ball size), or ten small orbs (the size of a lemon) before feeling the effects of her Drive. This will drain her stamina, effectively making her slower. Being tossed around can also cause body/head aches.

Extra:

@TheWindel

I added it to the CS. Thank you!
@TheWindel

She'd be able to create about five medium-sized orbs (ten smaller ones, and about two large ones) without suffering too badly, but after that, she'll start to feel drained. Every orb she creates after the fifth one will take a bit out of her stamina-wise. Also, despite her body becoming more and more used to being tossed around every time she does it, she may experience head/body aches from the blasts.
If there's anything wrong with her please tell me and I'll edit it right away.
