Zeva’s eyebrows scrunched together upon hearing Bowyn’s words of suspicion, no doubt intentionally spoken loud enough for Zeva to hear. She mentally took back the few brownie points he won when he healed her arm earlier in the forest, in a sort of childish personal vengeance. It seemed silly to her that Bowyn would show any degree of open suspicion to a potential enemy who had witnessed their secrets. If they were going to run into someone, they were lucky that it was someone as agreeable as Zeva. After all, she dislikes the dark elves as much as anyone, and she was well-trained in combat – perfectly aligned with what their mission calls for!

Mister Luum eventually decided he would tag along with Zeva and the dark-haired man with strange ears in exploring the city after everyone ate. Zeva was not thrilled per se – she was starting to build the impression he had a few screws loose with the whimsical way he conducted himself. It was unfortunately the better choice than going with the winter fairies who seemed most suspicious of her.

A sharp gasp escaped Zeva’s lips when a small creature suddenly popped out of her bag, responding to Bowyn’s calls. Raze, as Zeva learned this creature was called, was dusted in the crumbs of her rations, its cheeks full of evidence. Her jaw dropped in shock as she watched the creature happily munch away without a care in the world, looking as innocent as a newborn puppy with its beady, doe eyes, rather than the despicable thief it was. If they had met in different circumstances, Zeva surely would've fallen for its adorableness. She could hardly react to Raze’s assault on her personal belongings before it committed another offense, popping in and out of her bag again, this time with a coin.

“MYYyyYY MOOONEeeEyYyYY!!!” Zeva wailed, quickly snatching the ama out of Raze’s teeth with a moderate tug. She stomped over to Bowyn, scooped the thief out her bag, and plopped him atop Bowyn’s head.

“Stay there!” She stomped back, in the direction of the bakery.

Zeva simmered briefly in annoyance as she shoved the coin back into the bag and check on the extent of Raze’s damage. Good, pendant is still on me. As Zeva calmed slightly, the wafted scents of sugar and baked goods hit her nose again, and the hunger began to amplify the annoyance stewing in her stomach. She was low on rations now, so getting some food was a must. Zeva motioned for the group to follow with a wave of her hand. “Okay okay, time for some food.”

Whether the entire group agreed or not, Zeva was tagging along on their journey. She wasn’t quite comfortable with how guarded some of the members were around her, their concerned gazes feeling cold against her back as they walked further through the forest. The more steps they took, the more the tension seemed to wane, replaced by a growing excitement of what awaited them at the large port city. Her mind flew to other things on the trodden path, reminiscing on her past trips to Roshmi City and what kind of dagger she planned on buying. She never had enough time previously to truly explore the plentiful streets, culture, and sights it had to offer, but she figured it wouldn’t be much different this time either.

King Zanithel’s unpleasant personage was the first to greet the group upon arriving at the city gates; the sun’s rays flashing across the statue’s forehead and beaming into Zeva’s eyes. The statue had been installed there for as long as Zeva could remember, a long standing stain on the demi-human territory. Despite the negative emotions associated with the threatening statue at the city’s gates, the grandeur of everything within made it easy to forget the atrocities of the dark elves that ruled over it. Airships streaked across the skies and people scurried to and fro across the many pathways and streets. The smell of baked goods and cooking wafted through the air from nearby restaurants, stirring rumbles of hunger from the depths of Zeva’s belly.

Mister Luum’s suggestion to split up and explore lit a fire in Zeva’s eyes, who was eager to jump at the chance to do some sightseeing too. “Great idea! Let’s do some groups. I just need, NEED, to get some new daggers.”

As the group pondered this idea, Zeva could see the dark haired man whisper something to Mister Luum, and the faeries whispering amongst themselves too. Her hands reached for a strand of hair and fidgeted with the ends, twirling it between her fingers. She was sure she caught her name in the midst of their hushed voices at some point, emphasizing the feeling of ‘otherness’ that had nabbed at the back of her mind since they began their walk to Roshmi City. It was going to take some work before they would trust a stranger like her, surely.

Abruptly, Zeva jumped upwards and pointed eastwards at a small shop down the road from where the group stood. It was a quaint bakery with inventory on display in glass cases by the street, containing a variety of breads, sweets, and small bites. “That bakery looks so good!” Her attention was, as usual, easily seized, even more so with her growing hunger. “Should we grab something to eat together before we split up?”

Zeva averted her gaze as the fairies answered her questions in turn, unveiled threats sprinkled among their words. There was a certain dissonance between her lighthearted attitude and the solemness their situation demanded, which made Zeva feel a little out of place. She was definitely the unwelcome guest who had inadvertently invited herself to their party, but she was coming to understand what their mission was, and how dedicated everyone was to its cause.

Much to her surprise, Bowyn, as he introduced himself, was a healer among other things, and despite the cold reception, he kindly helped Zeva patch up her shoulder. She felt a cool touch as his magic transferred to her wound, but her heart was warmed by the gesture. “You’re not so bad after all!” Zeva beamed, flashing a friendly grin and playfully throwing a punch at his shoulder with her now healed limb. “Thanks, Bowyn.”

Mister Luum never seemed to consider the room when he spoke, interrupting the tenseness with a misplaced enthusiasm that made it as if the previous awkwardness did not exist. Though Bowyn emphasized this was not a ‘whimsical adventure’, Mister Luum sure made it sound otherwise. Zeva pondered this for a bit – she never had direct experiences with the dark elves’ cruelty in her sheltered upbringing in Illuminata, but she was very aware of the pain and suffering they’ve caused across Avalia. She recalled the anguished expressions on her parents’ faces when she told them of the things they lost, and the elders of the village who recounted similar stories to her in her childhood. Her beliefs were already shaped by those around her, and she knew she wanted to end dark elf rule as well. With the training she received that surpassed the training of many young elves, Zeva was confident that she could perhaps help their cause, and in the end, alleviate the worries of her dear family.

“...I think I would like to help. I’m better trained than most elves my age, if that provides you any comfort.” Zeva smiled once again, before directing her attention to the other elf. “Not sure I want to be your apprentice though. I mean, you seem to be great at light magic and all, but I’m sure not!” Zeva chuckled, reminded of all the times she was scolded at school and home for how much she struggled to grasp basic light manipulation. “I can do a few things here and there, but I’m more of a close-range fighter.” She motioned towards the blades strapped to her back.

“Why don’t we move towards Roshmi City while we get to know each other a bit better? We all have business there anyway.”

Zeva’s questions were met by a cold gaze and stern words of warning from the female fairy, which came at a bit of a shock to the young elf. She had been treating the situation with her usual lightheartedness but she was coming to notice the gravity of what she unknowingly stumbled into. The air felt as if it thickened in that moment, and her breathing wavered briefly before it was cut by Mister Luum’s rowdy laughter.

“Voiced threats useless. You should know better than anyone what’s required to keep a secret from being told by another. But as a group, we are quite bad at killing, so I have a better idea! Zeva…”

W-what?? Killing?? Zeva’s head turned slowly towards the older elf, a bead of sweat forming at her temple as he alluded to her possible execution. He continued by suggesting that Zeva join their group, going on a bit of a speech about their noble goals to save Avalia from…evil? The juxtaposition of his enthusiastic tone and nonsensical words only helped to form a mixture of confusion and anxiety at the pit of Zeva’s stomach. The thought occurred to her that she may have traded the owlbear for an even larger threat, and this one was armed with weaponry and magic.

She played it cool and responded with a light, albeit nervous, chuckle as she fiddled with a strand of her hair. “Um. I don’t want to die! But what is it exactly…that you guys do?” Her eyes panned nervously at each member of the group, all of them appearing wary of her still, except for this jovial elf, anyway. “As fun as your proposal sounds, my parents will kill me before you all do if I just disappear and miss my classes. What does saving Avalia entail? Who are you all anyway?” Zeva’s mind rattled with many more questions but before she could barrage the group with more, she felt a spell of dizziness wash through her and she stumbled backwards. The wound on her arm had been left untreated long enough for the blood loss to be significant.

“Ughh,” Zeva groaned, taking the med kit out of her bag. “Er, don’t kill me while I fix my arm please!” She took a few cautious paces back, keeping her gaze steady on the group as she began to wrap the roll of bandages across her upper arm.

The fight against the owlbear continued, and the white haired fairy dealt another blast of magic towards the beast’s limbs, freezing it in place. The owlbear struggled to free itself to little avail, but in time the ice began to crack. Before Zeva could take the opportunity to show off again, the light elf returned to the scene in animated flair, and stepped right up to Zeva. She cocked her head to the side in visible confusion as he whispered his suspicions of her; as far as she knew, she had not met nor wronged the man.

There was little opportunity for Zeva to protest as the light elf proceeded to converse with the trapped beast, with a laissez-faire attitude that gave the impression he had done this many times before. He uttered a quick prayer and promptly dispatched the owlbear, with smoke and the smell of burnt poultry and feathers wafting up into the air.

As soon as the fight was over, all of the tension that had been holding Zeva together loosened, and she dropped to the ground in relief. It was a blessing to have encountered these travelers on her journey, even if it meant bringing danger upon them because she surely would have died on her own. Now relaxed, Zeva took a moment to really examine her surroundings and the people who had graciously helped her. Her eyes drifted to a sullen looking man; he seemed disappointed he couldn’t do more. He caught Zeva’s curiosity – perhaps he was an elf too, but his ears were rather small, or hidden. If he were a fae, he was missing his wings, though she supposed it was possible that he could’ve lost them tragically. Perhaps he was a warforged, but it seemed unlikely. Zeva decided not to ponder on this too heavily – people had their own circumstances.

The fairy girl and the light elf both gave the owlbear a prayer, before an auburn haired demihuman began salvaging the valuable parts of the dead beast. Though Zeva really wanted to thank the group and introduce herself, the sullen man and two fairies appeared evidently cautious of her and stepped away. Zeva made a small pout; she missed her opportunity to make a good impression. The light elf seemed to be the leader of the group, and took on the responsibility of interrogating the stranger in their midst.

Zeva shot up and grabbed Mister Luum’s hand with enthusiasm, using the right hand from the injured arm as the other was still clasped over her wound. “Nice to meet you Mister Luum!” She shook his hand up and down. “My name is Zeva! Thank you and everyone so much for helping me!!” At this point, she had let go of the light elf’s hand and the injured arm returned slumped to her side.

“I’ve lived in Illuminata for quite awhile, but my parents say I was born in a town near Riverbloom. I moved to Illuminata a long time ago. So I don’t remember what Riverbloom was like. I’m going to graduate from Aegnor Stonel soon, so I guess I’m still a student, but I like fighting a lot more than studying.” Zeva giggled. “I was on the way to Roshmi City to buy new daggers. I had just saved enough to get an upgrade so I’m hoping to buy top-of-the-line daggers that will last me a long while. I figured I would travel to Roshmi City on foot and get some training done on the way, so I was looking around for some monsters to fight. But I kept running into small prey! How am I supposed to get more fighting experience with rabbits? I had just hunted a Joverine boar earlier and that's when I ran into the owlbear; I thought it was hungry and wanted the boar for itself, but it still followed me after I left the boar for it and ran away… Anyway, I’m glad I ran into everyone here! You really saved me, thanks again!”

Zeva’s monologue finally ended, typically giving relief to those on the receiving end. While she rambled, Mister Luum’s companion had been skillfully dismantling the owlbear, and it was impressive to see her haul all of the goods.

“Wow, what are you going to do with the owlbear?” Zeva’s eyes gleamed with curiosity. Her gaze returned to Mister Luum, “By the way, what are you guys doing here? Heading to Roshmi City as well?”

All of a sudden, a loud road erupted from the dark-haired man, and the skies bellowed in unison as a bolt of lightning smited the forest floor by his feet. The energy seemed to flow around him, and the blast sent a gust of wind that stirred up leaves and dust and brushed past Zeva’s skin. Zeva watched, bewildered, as the man vaulted forward with that built-up energy, and the scene was over in a snap.

Her eyes remained wide as she directed her gaze back to the light elf standing next to her. She pointed back and forth between the man and Mister Luum, “Wha-, what was that?”

“So you thought, lead the owlbear toward others, let someone else sort out your mess. Great plan, typical elf logic.”

Zeva glanced over at the snowy-haired stranger that tossed her the biting words. She responded with an awkward, nervous smile; she wasn’t expecting the strangers to take too kindly to her leading danger straight to them. While they might hold a grudge against her for this, it was a much better option than dying alone in a forest.

The other fairy of the group reassured him, "It’ll be okay.”

Zeva nodded in furious agreement; she liked this fairy lady already. “Yes! We’ll be fine if we work together!” she beamed.

As the owlbear came into view from past the trees, the winter fairy took swift action, skillfully wielding her polearm against the beast that charged towards them. In the next second, a wall of ice sprung from the ground and kept the owlbear at bay. The ground beneath them seemed to shake as the large beast rammed the full force of its body towards it, but the ice wall remained strong.

Woah, that’s some cool magic! Wonder what it would be like to fight an ice magic user…

While the others in the group seemed appropriately focused on the beast, the light elf that Zeva gravitated towards earlier seemed to be lost in his own world. Honestly, his vocal absentmindedness was distracting Zeva from the imminent threat in front of them. He was rambling about things Zeva didn’t understand, going on about Bardulf and a lost staff – which one of them was Bardulf anyway? In the next moment, the light elf pranced away on his own while Zeva watched, bewildered. She couldn’t believe that her fellow light elf would abandon his friends in a moment of danger, something that Zeva herself would find inexcusable. There wasn’t any time to ponder this man’s virtue, however, and Zeva quickly refocused on the battle.

The next one to attack was the dark-haired man. Something seemed to take over him as he steeled himself for the owlbear’s charge. He drew his weapon, and with electrifying speed he swung his blade into the hide of the foul beast. The halberd sank a deep wound into its neck, and the man swiftly dealt another blow to its arm. Zeva couldn’t help but to be impressed by his strength and agility; she was sure he’d make a great opponent as well.

“I’ll have a go!” Zeva smiled mischievously as she readied her weapons. She winced, lifting up her injured arm, but she was eager to deal more damage to the beast in payment for the wound she received from it. The dark haired man did a great job, and the owlbear was staggering already. Even with the state her arm was in, it would be easy to land a hit.

Zeva jumped off her left foot and dashed towards the owlbear. The beast stumbled backwards and raised up its uninjured paw into the air in preparation to attack. Zeva swiftly altered course mid-sprint, and leaped above the beast’s swinging claws. An orb of light began to form in her hand, and she physically thrusted the concentrated light into the beast’s eyes, “Wa-pow!”

Now blinded, Zeva darted her daggers through its flesh, butchering an ‘X’ on its shoulder. After landing the attack, Zeva jumped backwards, away from the beast, and re-applied pressure to her bleeding arm. She was giddy in vengeful glee and sneered at the beast, Haha, how do you like that?”

“Ouch!”

Zeva flinched as her fingers pricked the pointy end of a branch from an alaberry bush, drawing a bead of blood at the site. She instinctively brought her hand to her lips as she gave the bush a little kick in frustration, almost spilling the already collected berries in her other hand. Nearby was Zeva’s makeshift campsite she had set up last night, with a thin trail of smoke lifting towards the rosy skies as the last embers of her fire died out. The alaberry bush was a lucky find, as Zeva was growing increasingly tired of the few remaining rations she brought with her on her journey to Roshmi City.

Happily munching on her hard-fought spoils, Zeva crossed her legs and sat down by the ash pile that had by now fizzled out. She had been traveling through the Avalian wilderness for about a week now, with the goal of buying high-quality daggers in Roshmi City and getting some fighting experience on the way. Two birds with one stone, as they say. Through many shifts at The Oak Tree, she managed to save enough to upgrade her equipment and she was determined to not hold back on her spending.

Once Zeva finished her snack, she wiped off her mouth with the back of her hand, her fingertips still stained in berry juice, and quickly sprung up. She dusted off the dirt from her clothes, and picked up the travel bag that had been leading against a tree trunk. Back to training on the road! Zeva joyfully skipped away from her discarded campsite; with two daggers in hand, she swung her arms from side to side as she pranced across the forest floor. Her goal was to get deeper into the woods where creatures hid, so she could encounter some challenging foe. Nothing like live combat to improve fighting skills! For most of her journey, Zeva had been fighting small prey, like rabbits for food and the occasional almiraj or Joverine boar. But she was ready for a real challenge now, and she was sure she could take it on.

Fifteen minutes out, there was a distinct rustle in the distance. Zeva crouched down, eyeing the foliage a few yards away, where blushed rays of light danced upon the dewy leaves, casting patterned shadow on the dense forest floor and shorter fauna. Steady, steady… Zeva’s hand gripped the hilt of her blade tighter as she leaned towards the sound.

Zeva’s left foot snapped back instinctively as the silhouette of a sturdy creature pounced out of the bush and rushed towards her. She managed to dodge its first lunge and distanced herself enough to get a good look at the beast.

“Really? Another damn boar??” Zeva sighed in disbelief. Her shoulder dropped, disappointed in the difficulty level of prey. Sluggishly, she regained her composure and readied herself for the battle. “Guess we’re doing this again!” She raised her draggers in front of her face and bent her knees. The boar charged. The wind caressed Zeva’s frame as she flipped through the air, landing on the other side of the boar’s onslaught. In a swift motion, her body twisted to build momentum, her arms swinging both daggers towards the boar’s body. It squealed in pain as the blade grazed its hind legs, a shallow scratch. Angered, the beast charged again, directing its sharp tusks towards Zeva’s exposed midriff.

“Chill, boar, chill,” Zeva mused as she skipped away right before the boar’s tusks impaled her, an enthusiastic grin on her face. She swung again, landing another wound on the beast’s side. It was easy to hit such a large target, especially when it charged so honestly and eagerly.

After several more bouts, Zeva finally felled the beast and it collapsed in a puddle of its own blood. Haha! I did it again! She knelt down to the beast's head, ready to take a tusk as her trophy. Her dagger dug into the boar’s flesh, when an ominous shadow suddenly darkened Zeva’s view of her catch.

"Grr.." A low rumble sounded behind Zeva’s ears, a little too close for comfort. Slowly, she turned her head towards the source of the noise.

An owlbear stood behind her in a menacing stance, on the prowl as if about to strike. Zeva let out a soft nervous laugh, before cautiously standing up. No doubt the creature was lured by the sounds of their earlier scuffle and now was tempted by the meal, no, meals standing before it. Quietly, Zeva lowered into a fighting stance and her lips tugged into a cocky smile. Let’s fucking go.

The owlbear snarled and hurled its massive frame towards the elf. Zeva wasn’t so lucky this time, and managed to put her arms defensively in front of her to brace for the impact. Her body flew several feet backwards and her back slammed on a nearby tree. “Ouch, ouch, ow…” Zeva grimaced but quickly recovered and rebounded on her feet, dashing towards the owlbear, then shifting rapidly to its right side. Her daggers barely nicked its skin, being shielded by its plentiful fur coat and feathers. Her performance was being affected by the blow the owlbear landed on her earlier and she could still feel the pain pulsing through her body with every step she took.

Cough, Zeva’s slight pause to regain composure gave the owlbear its next opportunity to attack. A large paw adorned with rigid claws swiped towards her. She barely managed to dodge, sustaining a sizable gash on her upper right arm. Fuck, fuck, fuck!! Zeva hated losing, and she hated admitting it even more. She kept focus on dodging the owlbear as she considered her next move. Fight or flight? As the battle drew on and Zeva grew more and more tired, the latter became the more rational option.

“UGGHHH, fine! FINE!” Zeva shouted in exasperation as she began to dart the other way, clasping tightly at her injured arm to try to stop the bleeding. She was forced to learn the hard truth in that moment, that she in fact, could not take it on. The owlbear followed diligently in pursuit, growling as it went, undistracted by the free meal of Joverine boar that Zeva so graciously prepared for it. It seemed to value taking down Zeva more, who offended it with her aggressive behavior. Zeva jumped from tree to tree, and before long, she saw a clearing ahead. As she drew closer, she could make out a group of people gathered on a dirt path who looked robust enough. This is it!! This is my chance!!

“OWLBEAR INCOMING! HELP!!” Zeva glanced behind her, and the beast was still following closely behind. “Holy crap, GET OUT OF THE WAY!!” She launched off a tree trunk and somersaulted out of the clearing and ran straight in the middle of the group. Thinking fast, she saw another light elf in the group and instinctively sprinted to his side, her weapons drawn in preparation for the owlbear’s next attack.
