“Do not rush, watch, listen. The key to avoid conflict, is to understand it.”
Human name: Kain Baskerville Title: The Spider of Patience Age: 27 Height: 1,90 metres tall (Or 6’2’’ feet) Occupation: Tavern Owner/Bartender Main Personality Traits: Calm, careful, centered. Main Personality Weaknesses: Finds difficult to express himself, thinks too much before acting. Overall Personality and Mannerisms: Calm, focused, centered and always in control. Those few words are more than enough to describe Kain Baskerville, someone who waits for people to take their own time and tries to understand before judging. Whether in social occasions or when working, Kain takes a formal and serious attitude and has a great difficulty in properly expressing what he feels, according to the man himself, feelings are still very mysterious to him as they make people break their limits and perform unthinkable attitudes. Unless needed, it is hard for the male to talk, prefering to show what he means with actions, however, quite paradoxically, he also tends to deliver long and grand speeches whenever explaining something or asking favors. Despite everything, he’s that one person anyone could ask for help and he would do so, regardless. Appearance: Usually seen wearing a bartender outfit, Patience has a doubtful sense of fashion. The embodiment of patience skin is pale as snow, matching with his white colored hair, both entering in contrast with his bright cyan eyes. Fighting skills: The Sin of Patience often rathers not to resort to violence, trying to solve problems with dialogue as much as possible, however when needed, he displays his master level skills as a martial artist, fighting mostly with his bare fists and legs, he’s also a really good observer and can follow an enemy’s rhythm after moments later the beginning of the fight, granting him a great maneuverability and dodging skills. Special Ability: Kain is able to conjure bindings of all kind from simple strings to giant metal chains for various purposes, he calls this ability The Web of the Spider. Non-Combat Related Skills: Kain’s a pretty skilled cook, being able to cook plenty of plates, surprisingly good taking care of children, great piano player, pretty damn good at cleaning and also has a great memory. Hobbies: In his spare time, Kain enjoys playing card games and chess, he also has an enormous collection of books and enjoys trying to make new drinks to serve in his bar, The Limbo. Likes: Food in general, cooking, coffee, good drinks, games, books and people. Dislikes: Excess of sugar, unnecessary conflicts, not being in control of situations.
Backstory: The story of this man dates way back before the virtue of patience had awakened within him. This is not the story of the Spider of Patience, this is the story of Kain Baskerville.
The Baskerville family was one of the three noble families of the country of Britannia, a country located in the same continent as Reever, famous for its strict law system and very effective and famous Army. Said law system was administered by the Baskervilles, a family known for its long running legacy of judges and prosecutors, Kain himself knew the whole legislation of the country in the age of 14 years old by heart, being able to recite each and every law as needed. Ever since he was young he had visited law courts, watched his father judging and condemning criminals, something the young child always looked up to, being very proud of his father and his heritage as a whole.
And so Kain grew up like that, being tutored to become his father’s successor in the courtroom, a guardian of law, a paragon of order, a judge. However, the circumstances he found himself inheriting such position were very tragic, very very tragic.
The King of Britannia, a kind man named Aegon, loved by many, but far too nice for his own good, with a very strict politic about investigating criminals until their guilt was 100% assured and then, they would take their punishment. That angered some villagers, knights and nobles. The Ravenloft family, the ones responsible for the military in the Kingdom and another one of the most important nobles around, saw this as an opportunity to strike a coup d’etat and take the King down. Unfortunately, they succeeded. Aegon Vessalius was no more, and the new king was Aster Ravenloft, the heir of the family crowned king at the age of 20.
His first decree was to execute the king and all of their men, that including Johann Baskerville, Kain’s father, and the one asked to take the head of the courtroom was his oldest son, Kain Baskerville, the youngest judge to assume the courtroom, being only 16 years old. Scared but with nowhere to go, Kain listened to advice of his father, if he didn’t accept the offer, it would be considered treason and he would go down again, Johann said with a smile in his face “Keep the legacy running.” and attending the last wish of his father, Kain sentenced them all to death, fighting as much as he could to fight the tears back.
The following years were spent sure were very unhappy, Aster was a tyrant, the very kind that Kain would be glad to condemn, and yet, he did his dirty work. The Courthouse was not all that pleasant as well, bribed jury, people who did nothing wrong being sent to the guillotine right away just because the king said so, and of course, Aster himself was present during most judgements, dictating what should or should not be done there, taking very irrational measures.
Not only the courthouses were terrible, the kingdom as a whole was, they became a military nation with little to no concern to anything else, development, technology, infrastructure, and even healthcare for its people, it was about the weapon industry, the training of warriors, the reinforcement of the defenses, but who were they defending? Aster even had the idea of banishing magic items, saying magic and all the ones who meddled with it would bring doom to the country, saying magi-scientists were all witches and warlocks who forged pacts with demons. Being already aware of his own ability, Kain wondered what would happen to him if Aster found out he himself had magic abilities.
A life full of regrets and sins, Kain was little by little feeling more and more empty, more and more he was losing hope in humanity, many were the people he sent to the guillotine, few were the ones who actually deserved. Sadness filled his heart, not a single day he wouldn’t wish that the entire kingdom would burn down, and that’s when he met her, Elise.
Elise was a local owner of a bar, who was a moving ray of sunshine, long black hair, blue beautiful eyes, fair skin and a radiant smile. Back in the days, Kain would come everyday to her bar to drink his sorrow away, worried about him, Elise decided to sit down and talk to the male. Many were the times the two sat down so he could speak his heart out, and as the days, months and years passed, she began talking about her own problems as well, the two fell in love and eventually, when Kain was 22, they got engaged and finally, he was happy again. Despite all the problems, the two of them could face the problems together, his long wait was gone.
It was too bad, however, Elise’s brother was a transporter, he brought articles of magi-technology to the Kingdom and sold them for enormous prices, and in one specific day, he was found. The whole family lived together and as such, Elise was treated as an accomplice, and almost as in a sadistic choice, Aster picked Kain to preside the judgement. And once more, he had to condemn someone he loved to the guillotine, and for once, the ever so serious judge Kain Baskerville, lost his composure and cried during the judgement, cried his heart out. And so he went home and cried, cried, he cried for days until later on...when the tears dried out.
After Elise’s execution, his heart became hollow, he was the cause of both the death of his family and of the woman he loved, as well as the death of many other innocents, his feelings began to vanish little by little, he became a machine, a hollow purposeless shell of a man whose fate was to keep murdering innocent people. Too much for him to bear, so much, he had to run away. A revelation came to his mind, revealing his purpose, a reason to really exist, the virtue of Patience called him, while still prior to his true awakening, he had a feeling, a feeling that he needed to leave Britannia, and he knew the perfect way to do so.
Little by little, he planned, he joined those who were not satisfied with the current king, and boy, there were many, many were the man. They created a distraction in front of the palace, and silently, Kain sneaked into the palace, made his way towards Aster and gave him his final judgement.
“Aster Ravenloft, for usurping the throne, disturbing the courthouse and causing the death of many innocents, I, Kain Baskerville by the authority granted to me, thereby sentence you to death. Goodbye..”
After that was done, the Kingdom was returned to the Vessalius and so, Kain decided to leave, giving his position to an uncle, since he himself had no children.
Finally, Kain moved way from Britannia and marched forward to the Kingdom of Reever, a more open and welcoming place, where as a homage to Elise, he opened his own bar, the limbo. There he would serve everyone equally well, listen to their stories, be patient to all and not judge before he had everything straight.
He is the Spider of Patience, and as such he has his duties, but as well, he is Kain Baskerville, a man who has gone through a lot. And with the weight of that experience on his back, he strives to become a better person to atone for his crimes.
All fun and dandy, but before we begin, here are 3 simple rules to be followed!
1- This is a casual roleplay as everyone would expect, so some degree of literacy is required. If you can type a whole cohesive paragraph with someone decent grammar (after all, even mine is not the best there ever was), for me that's more than enough, but of course, posting more is always welcome.
2- All I require from you is at least 2-3 posts a week, and if you need to take some absence, just notificate me and it'll be all okay, my friend.
3- Try to avoid drama around here, please. We are all here to have fun.
The Plot
The world (also known as Tellurian) is ruled by two natural laws, Chaos and Order. Chaos is the wild, the disruptive, the one that shakes the world every now and then and allows it to change, while Order is the stable, the just, correct, the utopic model to follow and the very culmination of Laws which maintains the Status Quo of the world until Chaos does the work to shake it up and change it. Chaos changes Order, Order stabilizes Chaos, this is known as the Dualistic Rule.
There are many spirits and ethereal beings with fundamental jobs which keep these two running, many which are unknown to mankind, others that are right in front of them, yet they fail to recognize them.
Billions of years ago, however, there was something which threatened to keep the world at stasis, a third force known only as "The Void", which would reap the lives of countless spirits of Chaos and Order without discrimination, eradicating life and everything in the world, in order to make it hollow. Its agents were known as Voidlings, beings who were never meant to be, all born from abandoned concepts, children who were never born, and many many others.
In order to stop them, both the forces of Chaos and Order joined forces to create 14 courageous spirits to keep the balance running, 7 spirits of chaos known as the Seven Deadly Sins and 7 spirits of order known as the Seven Heavenly Virtues, powerful beings who when working together were able to bring an end to the Voidlings and keep the Void at bay, and by doing that, the Void began hibernating, sealed in the darkest corners of the world.
Nowadays, signals of the return of the Void had been spotted, many creatures fitting the description of Voidlings have been sighted. On that note, the 14 guardians of balance have returned, reincarnating into human children which would grow up and become the guardians they were meant to be and many years later, those children who grew up ignorant of their fate would hear the call.
The Setting
Here are some pieces of information onto the setting.
The world around us nowadays is a mixture of modern and medieval fantasy, a medieval world with kingdoms, royal families which fight for power, making use use of modern technology in a steampunk-esque style powered by magic.
Magic exists in Tellurian in form of magical gems which can be used to power and craft magical items and those can be used by humans, being the very foundation of most of their societies. Despite magic items being widely distributed to the mass population, just a select few human beings are actually able to cast magic from their bodies. The only ones known nowadays are the 14 guardians.
Monsters and creatures do exist, beyond the Voidlings that is, they are hunted down for glory or money. In fact fantastic beasts and animals of all kinds can be found, adding up to the already large fauna of this world.
Animals are more prone to attack, some say that's because they feel a disturbance in the world's balance.
The initial setting of the game is the Kingdom of Reever, the largest kingdom known to man, in its capital, the city of Bartla, one of the most advanced and influential cities in the world.
When it comes to Religion, we have two main ones, despite existing many others, as many as there are stars in the sky. However those two are groups who worship chaos and order as well as their guardians as Deities which have been getting more and more influential and present in everyone's lives.
The Cult of Havoc: A Chaos worshipping group, a long time ago they had began as a religious and philosophical order focused on debating the changes of the world and how they could be benefitial or not. But lately has been growing into a brainwashing group of terrorists who wish to use the excuses of chaos and change to inflict destruction upon the world. Their true motivations behind that remain unknown.
The Celestial Choir: An order of priests and monks who defend the ideals of peace and order. While those keep in touch with their original roots, unlike the Cult of Havoc. They tend to judge onto those who do not follow their ideals of an united stable world. They can usually be found at any town in public squares, nowadays they've been talking a lot about the end of the world and means of salvation.
Now you all might be wondering: What about other nations? Kingdoms? Isn't there more worldbuilding? Well, when it comes to the Mythos of this world, some more will be revealed in the next section and when it comes to history as a whole, well. I like to leave open spots for worldbuilding amongst my players. So invent Kingdoms away, make kings up, queens and all of that sweet thing and bring it to me whenever you have a juicy idea and so we can discuss it. Like this the roleplay can have little bit of everyone in it.
The Fourteen Guardians
As mentioned before, The Fourteen Guardians are beings of immense power, immortal spirits capable of holding back the forces of the Void by themselves. But what makes them so special and powerful and just who are the fourteen guardians?
During the first fight against the Void, both Chaos and Order gathered the most power they could and each one created 7 spirits in order to host such power, each one of them taking a primal form, the form of animals normally found in nature. It took them some power to master their abilities, but once it was done, they finished their job, at the cost of their lives in the end.
Knowing such Victory would not be permanent as the Void was only sealed, the Chaos and the Order feared they might need the guardians once more, so they went against their own rules and granted them life again. Taking an immense strain in the entities by result, and afterwards granted the spirits the ability to reincarnate if killed. Since for spirits the very concept of time is abstract, if killed during a war, the spirit may come back in time and reencarnate as a child there, being already an adult by the time the previous vessel had died.
During each reincarnation, the guardians may change drastically in personality, however be it a Virtue or a Sin, each and every guardian is the very representation of a concept, Sins are the reincarnation of spirits of chaos and Virtues of spirits of order. Each one of their aspects is not only in their name, but also tend to be a big aspect of their personality, being the main focus and culmination of their beings.
Aside from the ability of reincarnating across time and space, guardians also have a specific set of defining characteristics, quirks and abilities.
Be it a sin or a virtue, the guardians are able to detect each other when they are nearby and are also able to tell whether they are virtues or sins.
Despite all of them having memories of their past lives, some guardians remember more than others, while some have vivid memories, others may just have some flashes. (That's mostly up to how you people wish to play your characters, do you wish to have them being clueless to everything? Or maybe they know the storm is coming? We'll see.)
The guardians have personal magnetism, that's what brings them together despite of their distance. A guardian is inherently attracted to another, and said attraction only grows stronger when they are banded in larger groups, eventually being able to reach very long distances.
All guardians nowadays are inherently human, however, they are the only known humans able to cast magic from their bodies, in form of individual magic abilities.
Guardians are also much stronger, faster and more durable than humans.
As stated previously, each Guardian Spirit is represented as an animal.
Character Creation
Below, we have a basic character sheet with all the info I need to know about your characters. (That's just a basic sheet, you may expand it with more information if you so desire, I did it myself with my character)
Human Name: What’s your character’s given name? Title: This roleplay takes some short degree of inspiration from the manga Seven Deadly Sins, in there all the Sins have titles, and here is no difference, the titles go like this: Name of your spirit animal + Your sin. (Example: The Spider of Patience/ The Dragon of Wrath), etc, etc. Sex: Duuuh Occupation: What does your character do with their life? Personality: How does your character act? Appearance: Tell us about their appearance, what do they wear, etc, etc. Fighting Skills: Where you put your character’s fighting style. Special Ability: Each guardian is granted one unique magic ability, you may make this up as you will. Backstory: Not needed initially, however appreciated later on so interesting stories can come up. @Salvia Are there comics or books around? Jobs, schooling, and training to avoid? If so, rhen a medieval NEET is possible.
It is kind of a mix of medieval and modern, so for sure books are a thing, and comics could be as well. Jobs exist and they are slightly important, schools exist as well and all of those goods.
