โ€œJesus fucking Christ, whereโ€™d she find this picture? Iโ€™m a photogenic person! She had options! Also, what the fuck does she mean by โ€˜The Tyrantโ€™?โ€ Katie Callaghan found herself on Monday morning, storming across the quad, a photograph of herself in hand. She was, per usual, dressed to the nines, still refusing to abandon aesthetics in favor of functionality.

โ€œYou a tyrant? How dare she?โ€ Jamie Callaghan replied, dry and biting. His long legs carried him casually alongside his sister, his eyes trained elsewhere.

Katie rolled her eyes and shoved an elbow into Jamieโ€™s side. โ€œFuck off.โ€

โ€œOh yes, benevolent dictator. Fucking off now,โ€ Jamie said, the corners of his mouth curling up ever so slightly. โ€œSeriously though, itโ€™s not that bad of a picture. Iโ€™ve seen worse of you. Who cares what this bitch has to say anyway?โ€

โ€œYou should care. Your name was on that list too. Youโ€™re telling me youโ€™re the kind of person who holds up under scrutiny?โ€ Katie cocked her eyebrow and looked over at Jamie, awaiting a retort. Instead she found him staring down at his phone, eyebrows knit together. She rolled her eyes, always annoyed by even the smallest of interruptions. โ€œHello? We were having a verbal sparring match?โ€

Jamie looked up from his phone. โ€œHuh? Oh yeah, one second.โ€

โ€œOh my god, see this right here,โ€ Katie waved her finger around in a wild gesture, as if her shouts needed emphasis, โ€œis my point! How long until Ms. Fortune has her eyes trained on you and your boyfriend?โ€

Jamie frowned. โ€œHeโ€™s not my boyfriend! Howโ€™d you even know I was texting him you nosy little weevil?โ€

Katie laughed. โ€œBecause, Iโ€™m the only other person you text, and Iโ€™m standing right here.โ€

โ€œWell, maybe I was textingโ€ฆ Birdie.โ€

Katie laughed again. โ€œYes, because you and Birdie have so much to talk about.โ€ Katie stepped into Jamieโ€™s path, and spun around, stopping him. โ€œLook, all Iโ€™m saying is, it doesnโ€™t matter what it looks like. It just matters what people see.โ€

It was Jamieโ€™s turn to roll his eyes. โ€œOkay, fuck you. You're being dramatic, surprise surprise. Iโ€™m going to get coffee with Axel, and guess what? The world isn't going to end because of it.โ€ Jamie said, before spinning on his heel and walking away.

Katie smiled and waved him off, shouting after him, โ€œI knew it!โ€ before continuing towards the library, pulling out her own phone to fill Laren in on the bulletin board fiasco. If anyone honestly needed a heads up that they were in Ms. Fortuneโ€™s crosshairs, it was Ren. Katie wasnโ€™t the biggest supporter of her and Johnny B, but she didnโ€™t want to see it get messy and Ms. Fortune had a reputation for doing just that.

Katie pushed open the grand double doors to the library, and slipped her phone into the designer purse hanging from her arm. She found herself a seat at an empty table, and let out a breath. She couldnโ€™t afford to let the personal bleed into the academic. Compartmentalization was key to success, and she prided herself on having mastered it. She caught a handful of eyes on her, but she pushed them out of her mind. Really, how different was it from any other Monday? Katie wasnโ€™t exactly unfamiliar with the stares of strangers.

Still, even as she set about unpacking her laptop and busying herself with work, she found it hard to escape a nagging feeling that this was simply the calm before the storm. A few times her hands wandered to her mouth, but she refrained from chewing on her well manicured nails. She wouldnโ€™t ruin hard work over emotions as silly as fear and anxiety. She was Katie Callaghan, and she did not back down from challenges. As far as she was concerned, Ms. Fortune was just another challenger. For now.

i was productive today.

hello i am here for this

just gonna casually drop these here

Starring: Alex Durand and Addison Helmsley
Time: 8:15 AM
Location: The Quad - Room 206

Smoke drifted out from between Alex Durandโ€™s lips and floated up, dissipating as the ocean breeze brought the grey cloud into the air. Licking his lips, Alex dropped the end of his joint onto the pavement, crushing it under the heel of his shoe. Pedestrians passing by hardly gave him a second glance as he stepped off the wall, joining the school of fish as they swam to their tanks, to live out whatever miserable lives theyโ€™d been destined for.

Not Alex though. He wasnโ€™t a fish, but a bird, flying high above his worries, headed for the aviary that loomed over the city. Marble Heights was waiting, and heโ€™d have to arrive sooner or later.

His plane had landed in San Francisco only a few hours ago, but heโ€™d sent his luggage ahead and got the driver his mom hired to drop him off a few blocks from his favorite ramen place in the city. If he was about to submit to nine months of psychological torture in the name of education, then god damn it heโ€™d start it with a joint and some ramen.

This is how Alex found himself strolling into the Oaklands building at 8:30 in the morning, bobbing his head to the music pouring out of his Airpods and into his ears. Had he opted for a less musical walk to his room, he mightโ€™ve heard his name shouted from a few feet behind him, mightโ€™ve heard the slapping of expensive sneakers on the pavement, mightโ€™ve been prepared for Addison Helmsley to launch herself full force onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck and sending his ramen to an early grave. โ€œFuck! My ramen,โ€ Alex said, the dejection seeping out.

The disappointment on his face was quickly replaced with elation, as he turned around to face his assailant. โ€œAddie!โ€ Alex shouted, wrapping his friend into a hug. โ€œYou owe me a ramen by the way,โ€ Alex said, pointing at the noodles on the ground to emphasize his point.

Addison looked stunning, per usual, glamorous, yet casual all at once. โ€œYeah, yeah, thatโ€™s what you get for trying to have the first smoke sesh of the year all by yourself. Selfish little goblin you,โ€ Addie said, reaching up and ruffling Alexโ€™s hair before slipping past him with what he figured was only the first of many bags. Alex followed behind her, ramen left in the past, Airpods slipped into his pocket.

โ€œYou seen Reyna yet?โ€ Alex asked as he took in the Oaklands building, scanning for friendly faces.

โ€œIf I had, do you think Iโ€™d be here?โ€ Addie teased. โ€œShouldnโ€™t you be more concerned with where Lucy is?โ€ That earned her a light shove from Alex, who was already forming a retort of his own.

โ€œSays the one fawning all over Honey.โ€

โ€œOh shut up! I donโ€™t โ€˜fawnโ€™ over anyone,โ€ Addie said, repaying the shove with a punch to the shoulder before jabbing the button to call the elevator.

โ€œYouโ€™re right, youโ€™re more of a stalker really.โ€

โ€œHanging out at the cafe is not stalking, Alex. Itโ€™s a public space.โ€

Alex chuckled and shook his head as they stepped into the elevator, and slapped the button for the second floor. โ€œHow was your summer? Enough for Queen Addison?โ€ Alex asked, knowing very well what a Helmsley summer entailed.

โ€œNothingโ€™s ever enough, but it was enjoyable. Missed everyone here though. What about you?โ€

โ€œEh, the usual. Worked at one of dadโ€™s shops, went to visit Evan, skated, surfed, smoked.โ€ Wyatt shrugged as the elevator slowed to a halt, and presented him to the second floor. โ€œIโ€™ll text you if I hear about plans?โ€

โ€œDamn straight you will,โ€ Addie said, before her face was hidden by the reflective metal of the elevator, and Alex began searching for his room. Halfway down the hall he found Room 206, and swiped his ID to get inside. He was sure heโ€™d gotten an email about his roommates, but heโ€™d never bothered checking. Theyโ€™d either like him or they wouldnโ€™t, he couldnโ€™t really care less about that. He just hoped they werenโ€™t boring as fuck.

Starring: Jamie and Katie Callaghan
Time: 8:15 AM
Location: The Quad - Room 505

San Francisco in the fall was nothing like Beverly Hills, a blessing if you asked Jamie. The morning fog had receded, clutching at the sandy shores of the bay, but the chill in the air hadnโ€™t petered out just yet. Jamie walked across the Marble Heights quad with a sureness in his step, lanky form cutting a line across the grass. In his arms were the entrails of his home library, the most important organs that made up his Frankenstein of a collection, the spines that he couldnโ€™t live without. It was peaceful. Until it wasnโ€™t.

โ€œHey, Loser!โ€ Katie Callaghanโ€™s voice carried across the mostly empty lawn, only attracting the attention of those lucky few who had yet to hear Katie Callaghanโ€™s outdoor voice. She was clad in her favorite colors, black and red, a vintage leather jacket hanging off her slender frame. Jamie shook his head, glancing up at the sky as if to plead with whatever malicious deity had cursed him with a twin sister.

โ€œHello to you too,โ€ Jamie said as Katie approached. She smiled and punched him in the arm, just hard enough to say, โ€œI missed you.โ€ โ€œThanks for that.โ€

โ€œAnytime, Brother Dearest. How was the drive?โ€ Katie asked, walking backwards infront of Jamie.

โ€œLong. Howโ€™s it been here?โ€ The twins had been separated the past two weeks, thanks to Marble Heightsโ€™ required RA training weeks, and Jamieโ€™s late night arrival at his hotel last night.

โ€œOh, itโ€™s been wonderful! You know how much I love gathering round the campfire and singing Kumbaya,โ€ Katie said, sarcasm dripping from her tongue. Jamie laughed and rolled his eyes.

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who wanted to be an RA. I told you thereโ€™d be some bullshit involved,โ€ Jamie replied.

โ€œOkay, yeah, but I just wanted to be like, the hot, cool RA. Not, learn leadership skills and how to make a bunch of introverts feel at home,โ€ Katie said, letting out an exasperated groan just in case she hadnโ€™t gotten her point across.

โ€œHow the fuck did you get past the interview?โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that obvious?โ€ Katie flashed her brother a grin. โ€œIโ€™m me!โ€

Jamie chuckled, hardly surprised by his sisterโ€™s antics. โ€œSounds about right.โ€ Growing up with Katie, one got used to the way her charms beguiled authority figures and peers alike.

Katie spun around just in time to open the door to the new dorms, an effortless move that neither surprised Jamie, nor impressed him. Everything about his sister was effortless. โ€œWelcome to the Oaklands Building. New, expensive, and definitely not a gigantic waste of money.โ€

โ€œCareful who you say that to. Iโ€™ve heard our new home here is a very special donation,โ€ Jamie said, looking around the lobby and taking in the luxury that surrounded them. He was no stranger to the finer things in life, but that didnโ€™t mean he lacked an appreciation.

They rode the elevator up to the fifth floor, and Jamie couldnโ€™t help but let his mind wander as Katie rambled on about the last two weeks sheโ€™d spent at Marble Heights. The phone in his pocket was like a lead brick, weighed down by all the responses he hadnโ€™t received.

โ€œHey, earth to Jamie?โ€ Katie said, snapping her fingers to get Jamieโ€™s attention. He startled, and turned to look at her as the doors slid open. โ€œWhatโ€™s up with you? Youโ€™re acting weird. And not the usual, โ€˜Iโ€™m Jamie and I like to be smarter than everyone else and brood,โ€™ sort of weird.โ€

Jamie sighed as he stepped into the hall, following the wall to Room 505, where he hoped heโ€™d be the first arrival. โ€œItโ€™s nothing, justโ€ฆ bullshit.โ€ Leaning up against the wall, he balanced the box in one hand while he fished around in his pocket for his wallet, before tossing it to Katie. Without hesitation, she produced his student ID, unlocking the door and leading the way into his new dorm.

โ€œI think, what you just told me, is bullshit. I can play this game longer than you can Jay, cโ€™mon.โ€

Jamie groaned, following her through the (thankfully) empty suite, into what would soon become his bedroom and setting his books on the floor. โ€œItโ€™s Cole,โ€ Jamie finally said, turning to see Katie rolling her eyes.

โ€œYeah, that was obvious. Care to elaborate, or have you gone fully mute now?โ€

Jamie flopped down on his mattress, staring up at the ceiling. โ€œIt just feels, I donโ€™t know, off. I texted him this morning to try and meet up, and he hasnโ€™t said anything, and his responses the last few days have been super short, and I canโ€™t shake this fucking feeling that Iโ€™m about to get dumped.โ€ The words finally expelled, Jamie sunk into the mattress, and let out another sigh.

โ€œWell, fuck him.โ€ Katie walked over and shoved Jamie against the wall, laying down next to him and staring up at the white ceiling. โ€œBoys suck.โ€

Jamie let out a laugh. โ€œThat they do. Any word from Scott?โ€ he asked.

โ€œOh, we arenโ€™t talking about that,โ€ Katie said, smirking despite the twinge of pain those five letters brought to her. โ€œThis is your room, so weโ€™re talking about your boy problems right now.โ€

Jamie laughed, and turned to face her, resting on his elbow and fixing her with what she liked to call his, โ€œJournalist Stare.โ€ โ€œYโ€™know, you can be mad about it. I know you are.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not mad about it!โ€

โ€œKatie, youโ€™re baseline is angry, so excuse me if I have trouble believing that,โ€ Jamie said.

Katie rolled her eyes, and slipped off of the mattress, standing up and smoothing out the black denim of her jeans. โ€œI dumped him first, so thereโ€™s nothing to be angry about. Sure, I thought we were gonna try the long distance thing this year, and like, sure, I donโ€™t rightfully understand how he could dump me but it is fine. Iโ€™m zen.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure you are,โ€ Jamie said, repressing a knowing smirk.

โ€œOh, fuck you,โ€ Katie replied, adding a middle finger for good measure. โ€œIโ€™ve gotta go make my floor feel welcomed and all that jazz, but Iโ€™ll be back later,โ€ Katie said, taking a glance at herself in Jamieโ€™s mirror.

โ€œOh joy,โ€ Jamie said, already looking for a place to begin his library. Katie gave him one last punch in the arm for a goodbye, before slipping out and upstairs, leaving him alone in his new dorm. He slipped The Great Gatsby under his desk, and did his best to ignore the fact that his phone was still textless.
