Codename: Kouika
Real Name: Unreleased
Appearance: Just between the average height for a man and a woman, Kouika strikes a rather androgynous figure, covered in incredibly sleek, dense muscles, all the more obscured by the loose clothing he usually wears. There's not a single hair on his head, not eyebrows nor beard, and there are small scars on his inner-cheek wear many teeth were beaten out of his mouth. He has since pried out the 6 or 7 remaining ones for the sake of enhancing his disguises with different ivory dentures.
His face, for lack of any better words, makes him very ethnically/racially difficult to pin down, and it is possessed of dexterous, mercurial features, with hundreds of expressions to spare. His voice has incredible range, and he knows a wide variety of accents and languages, though he has sparse knowledge of some, he can speak basic sentences like a native.
Age: between 20 and 30
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 160 lbs
Standing: Active Member
Specialisation: Combat*
Bio:
Little is known about Kouika, not even his name, except for the fact that he used to be a warrior monk from further west than Nippon. Whether he was sent to Nightmare Island to deal with pirates, as the warrior monks themselves were sent to Japan for, or whether he traveled from China, or why he came to Nightmare Island in the first place, except that, for some reason, he came with the skillset of some more traditional ninja spies from the Japanese ninjas of the mainland. Though he was apparently very martially adequate, he did not mix business and combat unless something went very, very wrong. He was not good at guerilla warfare, breaking and entering, and only knew the rudiments of sneaking around quietly. These had to be taught to him by the Tengakure. Where Kouika truly shone was in the art of disguise. His ability to blend in and stand out whenever needed, his cunning, his ability to lie while looking someone straight in the eyes, swap body language, walk in entirely different ways. Kouika was, as his codename implied a creature who could be whatever and whoever he needed to be. Somebody who was his environment, at least where people and social situations are concerned.
One could guess, by his strange looks, that he was likely the son of some peasant and European sailor, as was an common occurrence in recent decades. By his skills, one could determine that he likely didn't have anywhere else to go but the monastery, and, perhaps by some sort of pilgrimmage, duty, or exile, he came to Japan and started working as a "domestic" ninja spy. He was since sent... Or chased... To Nightmare Island, where he merely walked into the Tengakure village. Even though a new bald and toothless man was walking around town, simply from the way he presented himself, he seemed like a natural town beggar, just like any other. Since it took so long for the villagers to notice a completely hairless stranger walking into town and setting up shop as a beggar, (about until he started growing hair again,) it seemed completely logical to hire him.
*6 Martial Arts:
1-2) Shaolin Spear and Shaolin Staff: While not the best in formations, Kouika has little to fear from most opponents when he has his hands on a spear or polearm.
3) Ninjutsu (in the physical combat sense. Freakin' everyone here knows Ninjutsu in the way it's traditionally supposed to be known): Unlike most martial arts in his repetoire, this one he actually learned from the Tengakure. Useful for blocking, avoiding, and quickly dispatching enemies from unnassuming and/or disadvantaged positions.
4) Drunken Kung Fu: While laughably implausible in most contexts, his mastery of Drunken fist makes him very difficult to knock off balance, capable of attacking in strange stances, (or even without a stance) and allows him to force fellow combattants to attack from uncomfortable angles. It has the added, out-of-combat bonus of providing Kouika with ample experience in making movements look unintentional, and performing adept movements in ways that look believable even when disguised. There are some staff and shortsword techniques attributed to this style, but Chinese swords really aren't common in Japan, and Kouika is more likely to use his more "tactical" styles when using the staff. Nevertheless, a little bit of Zui Quan peppered throughout is very useful.
5) Emeiquan/"The Animal Styles": The more commonly thought of "Western" boxing styles. Powerful, effective, animalistic movements that add a certain supernatural/demonic mystique to the superstitious eye, may bewilder or frighten those that he encounters in extended open combat, if they haven't seen this kind of thing before. It has its emphasis on general fighting prowess, with some grappling (Or breaking of grapples) and pressure points on the side.
6) Judo: The other martial art he learned during his time with the Tengakure. An excellent art for breaking important things at extra-close range.
Standard mission equipment:
Kouika carries with him whatever he's "supposed to" carry with him, if he can get his hands on it. If he's a farmer, he has farming implements. If he's a merchant, he has a pack, chest, or wagon of knick-knacks and goods. He is equipped with whatever he technically should be equipped with, and more often than not nothing more.
So, unless he's a guard, soldier, general, feudal lord, etc. He doesn't really arm himself. Granted, he is a warrior monk, trained to kill with specially made gardening tools and improvised household objects when it suits him, and especially his own bare hands. Technically, you could argue that he's always armed, but he will inevitably be tasked with more than just weedling, sabotaging, and eavesdropping at some point, and when he does, that's when he brings some extra weapons to give him the edge.
When he's absolutely desperate for weapons, and has no means of finding something his character would have, he usually brings a Kunai or three wrapped up in his sash. Sometimes he wraps twine around the hole, but that's usually more for the easy retrieval of a thrown knife than for use as a rope knife. Being an adept Shaolin and Tengakure warrior, he does know a few flicks and spins, but wide-range flexible weapons are highly impractical for someone of his profession, and he'd sooner use the rope to strangle someone than use rope dart moves as anything more than a last ditch scare tactic or means to keep better-armed persons at a safe distance.
While knives have their place in the assassinning world, Kouika also uses a few "stealth weapons" to make his job easier.
Whenever he's a woman, his hair is held in an updo by one or two long hairpins, filed down to throat-wrecking points.
He also sometimes brings a modified kiseru, which can be made to shoot blow darts out of the mouthpiece.
