@Starboard Watch Hornblower is a pretty good comparison, mixed with a little Pirates of the Caribbean and Rime of the Ancient Mariner for good measure.
Hello deckhands and daring-doers! Welcome to the interest check for Off the Map, a high-casual RP about adventure on the high seas. Set in a low-fantasy fictional world (the Pirates of the Caribbean films are a good example for the level of magic / time period), the RP will concern the grand voyage of The Adelaide, a merchant vessel making her maiden voyage under a new captain. What is meant to be a simple trading run to a far-off colony will instead go terribly off course, as the crew finds themselves embroiled in conflicts both mundane and supernatural, blown off course into strange seas and caught in the middle of a war for the new world...
Players will play as the crew of the Adelaide, struggling to survive as they plunge through untold dangers in what will surely be the voyage of their lives. Various officer positions on the ship will be available, but don't be afraid to play as a humble deckhand - everyone will get as much to do as everyone else.
If anyone thinks they might know Maxwell I'm open to discussing who and how, and what they think of each other.
The notion of Rachel having a crush on the foreign grad student who's four years older than her is funny to me. She'd be pretty involved with student government - maybe they met while she was helping with orientation for the students from abroad, and now she always somehow manages to be on the track when he is? (Basing that on your C.S. saying he's good at jogging)
Rachel is the classic popular girl – the pretty, talented captain of the swim team, well-connected and well-liked by all, and what’s more, she knows it. She’s not mean, and she’d never be so crass as to exclude anyone from anything, but she nevertheless has a very inflated opinion of herself. She’s always polite and complimentary in conversation, listening to what others have to say and making them feel good about themselves, but that kindness often comes with a rider of condescension. Deep down, of course, she’s deeply insecure about herself and her accomplishments, always feeling like it’s about to be snatched away from her at any moment, but you’d never know that from talking to her. She’s very determined to accomplish her goals, but does not handle problems very well – for her, out of sight is out of mind, and she’d rather run away from issues and put on a smiling face than ever actually deal with them. At the end of the day, she’s really not a bad person – just an extremely driven and slightly self-centered one.
【 SKILLS 】 List five things that your character is good at. . Swimming . Jogging . Making People Like Her . Studying . Lying
【 PARANORMAL EXPERIENCE 】 She was in the locker room when it happened. It was late, some time after the rec center closed – anyone else would have gotten a reprimand if they’d been caught there, but Rachel knew she could just flash the security guard a wink and a smile, and she’d get let off easily, and she’d needed to get more practice in if she was going to be ready for the big meet in two weeks. She’d been drying herself off, about to go home, when she heard it – a shrill scream, coming from the pool. Immediately, she crept to the doorway and stuck her head out.
Whatever she’d been expecting to see, it wasn’t what awaited her. The soft, chlorinated water of the pool had been replaced by an inky black abyss, so deep she could not see the bottom. There were people in the water, dozens of them, men and women, old and young, all thrashing and kicking. Their hands pounded on the surface of the water from below, like it was a glass barrier they could not cross, and bubbles flew from their mouths as they screamed and pleaded up at her to save them. She remained transfixed, their distorted voices ringing in her ears, frozen in horror as slowly, one by one, they went limp in the water, and floated down to the blackness below.
Rachel turned and ran. She sprinted, mad, breathless, still dripping from the pool, all the way back to her dormitory, where she locked the door and sat, huddled in a ball for some time, the ghastly images springing unbidden to her mind. She awoke the next morning and decided to pretend it never happened, yet no matter how hard she tries to move forward, she cannot outrun what she saw.
【 BIOGRAPHY 】 Rachel is a city girl – the child of a businessman and a high-powered attorney in Moscow, her parents loved her, but they never had much time for her. She grew up alone in their fancy apartment, and quickly learned that the most surefire way to her parent’s approval was accomplishment, of any kind. Every test she aced or advanced program she was placed into earned her a little bit more praise from those two distant figures, and though she didn’t have much in the way of friends, she excelled.
When she was a little older, her parents sent her off to a girl’s school – it was a prestigious institution, well suited to a girl like her, though she always wondered if they just didn’t want to worry about having her around. Nevertheless, she flowered in this setting, quickly establishing herself as the Queen Bee of her class. This was when her athletic career began in earnest, as well – her drive to succeed proved to serve her well as she pursued first the track team, then later the swim team. All throughout her successes, she kept up her humble, smiling exterior, and eventually she graduated the girl’s school and accepted a partial athletic scholarship offered to her by a small university in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t that she needed the money, of course, but the university fit snugly into her ten-year plan; graduate with flying colors with a degree in public policy, pursue swimming professionally, silver medal in the Olympics, retire, use her fame and her rural university cred to launch a world-shaking politics career.
Lofty goals, sure, but aren’t those the best kind?

Powers: In addition to the demihuman strength, speed, and reflexes you would expect from an aelf, even one cursed to a mortal existence, Roisin is a master of archery and bladework. His heritage grants him power over frost and ice - he can buffet foes with chill winter winds, imbue his arrows to freeze them where they stand, sprint across water by freezing it underneath his feet, and so on.
Weaknesses: Like all his kind, Roisin is burned by the touch of cold iron - contact with it is incredibly painful, and even proximity is enough to sap his strength. He is also drained by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or excessive heat; he can still function, but it'll tire him out quickly.
Imagine that with a more dour expression and a hood he can pull up, and that's basically it.
BRIEF Bio: Roisin is an aelf - an ancient fey race, old when humanity was young, dwelling invisible to them in a realm called the Yonderwild, a magical dimension of untold beauty and terror. For millenia, the aelves tormented mankind from the deep places in the woods - hunting them for sport, enslaving them, appearing as capricious gods and demanding cruel and bloody sacrifice, and none questioned it, for this was the way the powerful behaved to the strong. As mankind matured, the aelves fell into legend, myths of cruel sprites or bloodthirsty gods, bedtime stories to frighten children - yet the kidnapping, the hunting, never stopped.
Roisin is an elder aelf, the son of Queen Medeeara herself. By her immortal will, he and his three siblings were made royalty of the seasons - and he, the most solemn and sober child, became Prince of Winter. He served at his mother's behest and executed her will for millenia, complicit in the cruelty of the court and the torture of the humans, until a chance encounter with a human slave led him to a moral awakening. Overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow and seeing for the first time the wickedness of his people, Roisin vowed to redeem himself for his part in their evil, freeing every slave in the Aelf Queen's palace and battling against his siblings to cover their escape. Ultimately, they proved too strong for him, and as punishment for his defiance, Roisin was banished to the mortal realm, his immortality stripped away. This proved to be their mistake - for as soon as his strength was recovered, he vowed that the secret terror inflicted on humanity by his kin would be ended, and his shadowy war began.
Now, two long years later, he lives as Ronald O'Leary, curator of a local art museum, specializing in antiques. At night, however, he stalks the rooftops as Huntsman, the protector of humanity from all entities, Aelf or otherwise, that would cross over into their world to do them harm.
Potential Storylines: 1. Roisin learns to fit into human society better, work as a team. 2. Roisin's siblings attack on the summer solstice, when he is weakest, forcing him to seek the help of other heroes. 3. Roisin leads an invasion into his homeland for some noble purpose. 4. Roisin learns to respect the others, value humanity more completely rather than as a pet. Notes: Nothing comes to mind!
I'll freely admit to interest over here with my merc idea. Like I offered up above, they could have made foes on other planets, have others after them, or just overall rub people the wrong way. Alien mercs aren't good guys, unless the pay's good.
That's fun! I could totally whip up a skeleton for a brutal alien merc, and then maybe we can talk about the two having a history - having clashed before, personal enmity, what have you. Thinking I might channel it into a Big Guy archetype, but we'll see.
As far as a villain for my character, you could play one of his siblings, a Prince / Princess of the Aelves that corresponds to one of the other seasons - cruel, capricious, arrogance, and we could talk a bit more about them and flesh out their world a bit better. Or you could play some other fey creature crossed over from Roisin's realm - an ogre, a centaur, a forest spirit, what have you. You can have fun with it!
