Keeping an RP alive is as much the players' responsibility as it is the GM's.

The most important period in an RP's life is when the responses start to slow after the initial honeymoon phase. This is THE deciding time for whether or not an RP dies.

LIST OF IDIOTS I LOVE INCLUDING DESCRIPTIONS FUCK YOU AVI
I disagree with the first part and agree with the second. Indeed it is awesome to see the creative ways and perspectives in which different characters can spin the same magic system.
oh yea of course - the magic system itself has to be good - i just think the best ones are the ones that reflect the themes of the story (brandosando baby)
Indeed, tying the themes and magic system can and often will greatly enhance both. However, I don't think that it is the defining component of the best magic systems, in the sense that it is more of an optional component: A magic system that sacrifices its consistency for themes is still a bad ms.
I think that's a good point, that the system should stand on its own. But, I'd just like to say that I feel like a lot of the REALLY good magic systems are tied in thematically. It's not a hard and fast rule, obviously. There are always exceptions.
If you were to ask me which magic systems I favor, I would say those which most integrate with the world which they are a part of, and make their creative elements shine through it.
However, as someone who likes to worldbuild even without a story attached, a good magic system is something that first and foremost is good independently of other story elements, except for the world in which it is integrated. Otherwise, rather than a good system, it feels forced.
Not according to my knowledge. A GMPC is a Game Master Player Character. You can have them die if you want. They tend to be important to the plot, but don't quote me on this at all.
hmmm. people tend to hate gmpcs for being too plot relevant and cool and overpowered. i can see how my npc is just fun for me to play, not any of those three qualities.
