Beats me... It seems to be almost universal... or er... omniversal, type of realm. I presume every creature has something like this in them? It is abstract, it is never one scene all the time however... picture a dreamscape. Ever-changing and adapting to thoughts and feelings. This must be a parallel of that.

Symbolism. The lighthouse must be your core, your mind/body/spirit. The surrounding ocean, the forces tearing you apart due to hunger, the blockage curse placed on you, your instinctual survival instinct causing your desperation... yeah...
