I was born in the wagon of a traveling show. My momma used to dance for the money they'd throw. My papa would do whatever he could: preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good.
Shinichi was prompt in reaching the meeting place. He'd taken a brief look inside the school before heading over, and what he had seen had already confused him. Was it bigger on the inside?
Around him, other students were arriving as well. The timid looking girl—Hana, was it?— had immediately sat by a tree and started reading again. Shinichi wasn't much of a reader, and he envied her ability to relax in a strange situation like this. Nearby, the scary-looking guy Brock was glowing. Was he using his power? This was supposed to be an assessment, but to demonstrate his main ability, Shinichi had to be hurt. He very much did not want to be hurt. He decided that he would only show off his strength, even though it wasn't much.
Several minutes after they were supposed to meet, Akiko arrived and made an outburst right away. Shinichi decided to answer.
"Well, she might be waiting for everyone to get here, Akiko. Maybe she's watching us from nearby."
Shin was glad to be back in the Institute. Picking up the children was always a dull task, and the introduction was generally the same. At least the fireworks were tasteful this year. He still had bad memories from having to put out a forest fire.
Briefly, shin considered going back to his lab. No, he would need to mentor at least one student this year, so he might as well spectate the match. Security would have cameras around the area, so that would likely be the best place to watch covertly. While he could actually go out there and use his Mind's Eye move to spectate, or go to wherever the staff was supposed to watch, Shin greatly preferred staying in the Institute with the air conditioning.
When he reached the Security room, it was empty. They must have been off doing something else. Shin took a seat in the chair by the monitors and typed in the password. While he wasn't technically supposed to have that password, he hadn't been reprimanded for using it the past. He switched the main monitor to a view of the students' meeting place, and reclined in his seat with his notebook out. It was time to log some new abilities.
And alright, just checking. Any plans to get a system to working on that? Monsters magically drop them or something?
Your patron will give them to you. Since I plan on everyone playing as their patrons, if you feel like it's appropriate for your patron to reward you in a situation, go ahead. If you go overboard I'll ask you to tone it down.
And here we go. Need some justice up in here. I think I'm doing it right anyway
Name: Alicia Hayden
Age (Magical Girl): 15
Age (Before Magical Girl): 21
Gender: Female
Gender (Before Magical Girl): Female
Appearance:
Specialization: Light - Alicia can fire beams of light to attack with modest attack power, single targeting, and long range. Can use a blazing sword of light in melee. Can use spells that see through deceptions like illusions, good at finding things, and capable of Purification (between Fire and reinforcement). At an advanced level she can force others to reveal secrets to her.
Out of costume she is always aware of when people lie to her.
Weapon: Ranged, Bow Star Seraph - An ornately decorated longbow with ammunition both magical and ordinary. It provides quit a bit of a wallop at full draw, to punch through armor and flesh. It makes up for the comparatively low speed of the weapon when it is being used, though she can augment that with magic to increase the firing speed of her weapon and even throw out multiple arrows at once.
Power: Barrage - Specializes in suppression, casting a lot of small spells in a row, and she can add secondary explosions to her larger spells.
Perks: Enhanced Outfit - An improved uniform that channels magic better, and provides serious protection to the point of shrugging off axes and heavy weapons fire.
Sorcery - Alicia has experience with the mystical art of Hoodoo, which she can even teach to normal people after some lessons. It also lets her use magic when untransformed.
Interdimensional Tourist - Alicia knows a traveler from another dimension who lends a hand when she needs it, giving her a place to crash, offering fake ID's, pretending to be her parents, etc.
Get out of jail - When imprisoned or trapped Alicia can rarely choose to teleport to a random safe location, which is guaranteed to have the supplies or facilities she needs to recover. Easy return and the area remaining safe past arrival are not guaranteed.
Blood Magic - Magic can be fueled with health rather than Mana, though obviously this can be dangerous to your general well being
Patron: Beacon
Patron Benefits: Spark - With a small exertion of will Alicia can resist attempts to alter her mind or body
Perfect Life - The Beacon gives you the Fake Parents perk, and will defend them from monsters.
Supplier - The Beacon provides Alicia with a lot of non-magical resources, though it may take some time for her to get them.
Patron Drawbacks: Vow of Patience - Alicia vows to show forgiveness and be merciful to those who do wrong, Build a sense of peaceful stability and harmony, resolve issues and arguments respectfully, and act with a forbearance that comes from moderation
Excommunication - Don't play by the Beacon's rules, get kicked out and killed on sight. No cooperating with Horrros, dark magical girls, monsters, or the Ebon Mint, no using Black Coins, no killing other Beacon girls.
Fighting Style: Alicia is primarily a ranged fighter par excellence. She will hang back and provide support for melee fighters, taking out mobs and backing up her allies with powerful magic. If fighting solo she will do her best to keep her distance, hammering away at her opponent and wearing them down until she can shift to the offensive and deliver the coup de main with an overwhelming onslaught of magical force. This is augmented by her blood magic, allowing her to keep up the fight for far longer than your average magical girl and ensuring that the strategy is effective by maintaining a consistent power output for longer.
If she is pulled into melee she will use her magic to fight defensive and look for an opportunity to return to long range, or for her opponent to make a mistake so she can finish the fight right then and there.
Stats (Untransformed): These start at 3. CYOA options indicate if they apply out of costume as well. STR: 3 AGI: 3 VIT: 3 MAG: 4 LCK: 3
Stats (Transformed): These start at 4. STR: 8 AGI: 7 VIT: 10 MAG: 11 LCK: 6
Personality: Alicia does her best to live up to the virtue that she has taken on as part of Beacon, and she would consider herself a fairly patient person who does not relish the thought of violence. That does not mean she will not act to defend civilians if they are threatened. This she will do with a firm conviction, though there may be some regret depending n the circumstances involved. She is not heartless after all.
As a normal girl Alicia works hard and has an upbeat attitude, always looking forward to whatever the day might bring, even if it's a challenge to look on the sunny side. She tends to be more charitable than is perhaps good for her, but doesn't mind working hard and helping out others if they need assistance. She also has a soft spot for music, specifically soft rock and classical music, and cares a lot about her family. Fortunately being in Beacon means she doesn't have to worry about them, giving her a bit more peace of mind.
History: Alicia grew up with a fairly normal life, the eldest of three siblings and the one who felt the weight of family expectation upon her. She did her best to live up to the family values, and to represent them well. She did not want to let her parents down after all. Yet she always had this nagging suspicion that there was something missing, that she could be something more. She just didn't know what it was.
It would take her time to find out. She went to college, planning to become a teacher so she could give back to people much like she had been raised to. Yet she was not content simply giving up her life so easily. During break she went traveling, exploring the world a bit to try and find herself, and to resolve herself to what she was going to do in the future. A fact made all the more ironic when she was approached by a Puchuu from 'The Beacon' one day.
Little did Alicia suspect, but she came from a long bloodline of magical warriors, as she was so helpfully informed by the representative from Beacon when they met. She was, of course, informed of the terms and conditions that would be a part of fighting as a magical girl, and after some careful thought she agreed. To fight as a magical girl and to help people, that was all she could ask for really. Now she could make the world a better place, in her own special way.
So she became a magical girl, learning how to fight, to harness her powers and use them in a manner that lived up to the ideals that Beacon upheld. She also chose her virtue, and settled into a new life with her family. She went out to fight, and soon got quite a bit of experience as a magical girl. Along the way she also met a strange traveler who claimed to be from another dimension. After buying them a meal they struck up a good friendship, and now work together when it is needed or convenient. Her friend doesn't go out and fight, but for more covert things it works out well.
For now she fights, and everything is generally alright. Certainly she can't imagine a more fulfilling life.
Incantation: "Chains of Darkness, break! Light, shine forth!"
Additional Info: N/A
Type: The Beacon
Name: The Beacon
Patron Benefits: Perfect Life: The Beacon gives you the Fake Parents perk, and will defend them from monsters. Spark: You have a spark of the Beacon's light within you. You can easily shrug off attempts to alter your mind or body.
Patron Drawbacks: Vow: You must vow to honor a virtue. Every time you break the vow, your standing with the Beacon lowers. Excommunication: If you break one of the Beacon's fundamental commandments, you will be excommunicated. You will switch from the Beacon patron to Alone, and other Beacon girls will be told to kill you on sight. The commandments include:
1. You may not consort with dark magical girls, monsters, horrors, or the Ebon Mint. 2. You may not kill another Beacon Girl. 3. You may not use or possess a Black Coin.
Personality: The individual creatures that make up the Beacon have differences in appearance, but not in personality. Each one is kind and understanding to their agents and those they see as not corrupted, but they believe that dark magical girls, monsters, and any who serve horrors are beyond redemption and will actively urge their agents to destroy them.
History: The history of the Beacon is unclear to even their senior girls. They claim their purpose is simply to safeguard magical girls and all of humanity.
Resources: The Beacon makes up about 5% of all magical girls. They are generous with their coins for girls who work for them, and are able to provide fake families for each one.
So, a couple of questions regarding stats and patrons.
I realize this is a free-form RP and whatnot, and the stats are more of a guideline, but will our characters be able to train/increase their respective stats and skills in some manner? Or are we simply locked into what we already have?
Secondly, would someone who is a solo patron like Isana, would they be able to pick up a patron later down the road if they decide they'd want to work exclusively for them? And if say, a magical girl decided to go against their patron, would they be able to?
Lastly, and more of a personal thing - In Ula's history I decided to go with 'Emergency' in regards to how she was first recruited. I sort of overlooked the two bonus Combat Perks from that, since under the Ally perk you can only choose three combat ones. Would I ignore that or could I still give her two more perks from the combat table because of it?
The main currency of the magical world is the coins. After the initial transformation it takes more to improve, but they still work. I was thinking something like 50 bronze, 20 silver, or 1 gold to increase a stat one point.
Solo girls can switch to a Patron, yes. They would switch out the benefit they chose for whatever the patron gives, though. If a girl went against her Patron, she'd lose the benefits and drawbacks (unless it doesn't make sense to lose them easily, like being Marked by a Horror) and switch to solo.
If your Ally is going to be more like a second main character for you, you can add the bonus from your origin. If they're going to be more tangential you should leave them as is.
