As Red-Eye drew ever closer, Jesse wondered what she could do. There had to be something. This situation was not ideal, to say the least. There had to be a way out of this, for everyone. Of course it would be trivial to save her own life- but that wasn’t a victory. Maybe she could No-Collide something? Lift something up? Make something smaller at a crucial moment? Someone could practically hear the gears turning if they put their heads up to her redhead. But a solution would present itself in the form of Robin and his sacrifice play. A Final Smash- something like this was about to happen in the undersea lab if Jesse remembered correctly.

Well, this was it. Another one bites the dust. Jesse would just have to win it for Robin, too. Robin’s final display of power was truly extraordinary. Countenance newly sharpened with grim resolve, Jesse brushed past Poppi and once again took her place in the gunner’s seat. She was looking forward to finally wiping this oversized maggot from the face of whatever world she was on today.

As the sand disappeared the train took to the bridge, the Red-Eye failing to dig into metal, Jesse silently lined up the cannon. Easiest shot indeed. Quickly, Jesse did some mental calculations. They came up with the idea that whatever happened, she had to kill this thing before it did anything else. “You guys can fly, right?” She said, and pulled the trigger.

Though she didn’t quite predict just how bad things would get. “Ah, fuck.” She said, watching the entire god damn desert vanish into the abyss. It was time to abandon ship.

And then suddenly she was really high up. “Um.” She pondered.

Did she miss something?

Glancing around, she saw everyone else being lifted high into the air, and then freezing at the apex, before slowly moving back down. Wind blew her hair and clothes all around.

Polaris?

A blue shimmer directed her eyes downward. There that ugly motherfucker lay, its carcass spewing evil into the air towards them.

Man, I wish I could fly again. She thought to Polaris. Evade would just have to do. She reached her palm out behind her and then pushed off the sky, blurring through the updraft to charge downward. Forgoing accuracy, Jesse summoned her Service Weapon in her right hand as she fell head first. The pistol’s barrel rotated and began to spin. As she dived downwards she unleashed a hail of machine gun fire upon the flying enemies, cutting a small path through them. She flattened herself out, hitting the air brakes as it were.
“Hey, Sven.” She called out. The cooky Alchemist Uncle Sven appeared for the first time in a long time. Jesse hadn’t found the time to use him yet, but looking at the weak spot, and her musings on currently lacking any real burst damage, had given her an idea.

He seemed all too happy to be summoned during a death plummet, cackling along. “Gimme a fire flask! Gonna make it a big one. Sound good?” Jesse offered. A science experiment. Could she once again give the first law of thermodynamics the finger? The round alchemist gave the redhead what she wanted, tossing a fireflask at the monster below. He floated away like a balloon. Jesse withdrew her Tool Gun from its holster, quickly used some minor telekinesis to switch it to Inflate, and fired several shots at the fire flask. Lo and behold, the glass round flask and the boiling orange liquid within double, tripled, quadrupled in size. It was now the size of Jesse. Any bigger and it might break apart in the air or break for some other reason. Uncle Sven flung his hands up in the air, whooping in victory, before vanishing. “All right.”

Jesse unsummoned her Service Weapon and latched onto the fire flask with Launch. The air around the bomb shimmered with power. Hopefully her machine gun fire and her allies combined would cut a path for the weapon to the giant beast. Once she thought she saw a lull in the swarm, she narrowed her eyes. “Open wide.” She jerked her arm down and the fire flask plummeted through the up draft, zooming towards the gaping wound of the creature at tremendous speed. She felt like it had enough speed and weight to smack and crush one or two of the flying bugs out of the way before breaking. Worst case scenario a big enough creature sacrificed itself to break the flash, only to send a rain of fire spreading across the greater area, softening it up. Best case scenario, the dying Red Eye’s innards got roasted.

Jesse whistled appreciatively at Raiden and Sectonia’s impressive display. “Hot damn. That’s some fancy flyin’.” She said.

She stared down the sights of the cannon as Red Eye approached. Closer and closer it came. Feeling like a heavily armed deer in headlights, Jesse held off on pulling the trigger. “Come on. Open wide.” But Red Eye didn’t budge. No longer was it going to rely on bites, simply it’s titanic weight. Jesse didn’t want to waste Yellow Team’s shot. If it only opened wide, she could sink one right down it’s gullet and they would be victorious. But it was winning the game of chicken.

“Clever girl.” Jesse grumbled, and as the Red Eye collided with the nearest train car she pulled the trigger after her brief countdown. That seemed to get it back for now. It certainly helped that it was so weakened.

She sat back and wiped her forehead, her palms sweaty. From heat just as much as nerves. Jesse was still a bit overdressed for the weather.

The Red Eyed beast destroy the armory, Braum escaping in the nick of time. But as the armory exploded, the shockwave washed over everyone around the Railway Gun. It knocked the wind right out of Jesse and smacked her head against the back of her seat, and rattled her ear drums to boot. "Agh!" She held onto the sides of her head, grimacing. Fortunately she had Health protecting her, which meant that while it still hurt like a bitch, she'd be just fine for now. It wasn't quite as bad as getting shot directly in the head with her Health up. That one almost made her see double back at that under sea lab. Regardless, Jesse still felt like Red Eye had been getting the worse of their trading of blows. Jesse still had all her insides.

No more armory. They were running out of options- as in, they only had one left. Turn the cannon, load the shell, turn it back, and fire. That was the plan.

“Let’s make it happen, people.” Jesse said simply, hopping out of the cockpit once more. She dashed over towards the turning controls and flexed her fingers, popping them.

And then she started to mash.

“Y’know, I know there’s dangerous monsters incoming but a supersonic cyborg probably wouldn’t be super underappreciated doing this.” She said genuinely a little strained as she tapped the button as fast as she could. It reminded her of playing some crappy arcade game with her brother when she was a kid. Slowly but surely the cannon began to turn, in order to be crane loaded.

“Honestly.” She repeated again, more exasperated at the arbitrary cannon design. “Couldn’t it at least have been a crank wheel?”

This was all going rather well. She enjoyed watching the Seekers come and go and talk and banter amongst themselves. And what a colorful crew they were. It seemed like they were soldiers all. Or children. Or child-like. Which was somewhat concerning but she had learned not to underestimate children. After all, her rival was an annoying brat herself. (Only eight months younger but still.)

But the father son dragon turtle duo was of particular note. She watched them bond in the distant waters. Playing with a pet. Challenging some random guy’s pet to a fight like it was nothing, just being very protective in general. The kid, Junior, wanted to be better at fighting, and the father, Bowser, said he was proud of his progress.

Karin stood in her usual powerful yet feminine pose, but as she pondered the leaving father son duo she seemed to be in something of a day dream. She blinked, shaking her head free of these thoughts. It didn’t matter. Envy was a bad look on people, which was just fine, because Karin wasn’t envious. Why would she be? Because she’d never had an authority figure offer her an ounce of affirmation? Why would that matter? She had an entire army of staff that constantly acknowledged her greatness every moment of every day. And Ishikazi-san was all the guidance she had needed as a child. If anything, he was better than a regular father, because he had to do what Karin said or she could have had him fired! So who’s laughing now. Karin was. That’s who. ”Hah!” Karin barked out a laugh, to no one in particular. Besides, it was merely a matter of time until the Junior overcame his father in strength and destroyed him, usurping his kingdom and throne. That was how it had to be and that was how it always went. So the whole matter was moot.

Link disrupted her reverie, and Karin waved at him. ”Oho, it’s no matter, no matter at all.” She smiled. ”Feast and be merry! You’ve all earned it.”

That was the third time she had said something like that. It struck her that she hadn’t really been doing much socializing. Normally, she did it through fighting. It was how she had met all of her friends and allies. But manners dictated it was rude to challenge weary warriors to a battle. So. Karin had ended up just kind of standing about while everyone else chatted. Not that Karin was some kind of anti-social weirdo who could only make friends with punching! If that were the case surely all of her non-street fighting friends would have been pummeled to dust by now. It was just- something felt a bit off. Karin couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Were the Seekers reluctant to speak with her? Was she radiating some kind of intimidating aura? Or perhaps they were too tight knit and were reluctant to get too close to an outsider?

Karin once again was shaken from her reverie as the necromancer robot one, Blazermate, picked up Nadia and began flying her about. Yes! That was what she needed. Some bonding. Something fun, but relaxing, or exciting! She should have participated in that volley ball game but- well it wouldn’t be fair to destroy her guests.

“I shall go about creating a sand castle myself!” She announced. She glanced around the the guest remaining at her beach. “Who wishes to join me and socialize?” With a snap of her fingers an immaculate set of sand manipulating tools was at her disposal. “I am delightful company.” Karin declared.

She made her way down to the shore and began constructing one herself and- quickly a very impressive and detailed form began to take shape. Not so much of a sand castle as it was a sand cathedral.

Jesse steadied herself, grabbing onto the railing. The giant desert worm pushed against the train, almost causing it to tip. This caused her to catch sight at Braum who was shield surfing by hanging onto the railing. “Um. Hang in there, buddy.” She gave him a hesitant thumbs up, and then held on tighter.

Fortunately the band of characters at the top managed to cause enough pain and damage to get the thing to sink back under the sand and the train was righted. Jesse took a moment to breathe, glancing around at the others. “Honestly.” She said.

As Midna went to fetch Braum, and Prim’s new friend Thereon button smashed away- “Seriously. Who designed this shit?” - Jesse took a few pot shots at the oncoming swarm but mostly focused on clambering into the cockpit.

The massive cannon slowly turned towards the Red-Eye, and Jesse pre-emptively adjusted its aim so it wouldn’t go too low, or too high.

When it was all nice and aligned, and Therion gave the order, Jesse nodded and looked down the scope. “Cover your ears! Three two one go!” She slammed the trigger, firing off another shot towards the center of the creature’s body. Since it was parallel this time, it would dig straight into it. Hopefully it wasn’t another glancing shot.

As long as they kept this up, they could win. Jesse laughed at Poppi’s response to her joke. She observed the damage against Red Eye and the swarm of flying, exploding, big headed enemies. If they destroyed the train, this whole thing was over. There were a few close calls, but fortunately no one was severely injured yet. The newcomer, a cyborg with a sword, was doing some work that caught Jesse’s eye in particular. Everyone did their part but yeah, new heroes could be trusted. Still, the Director imagined that the status quo wouldn’t last long if they didn’t start making more progress.

Jesse exhaled with satisfaction as the big cannon let itself rip into the giant Red Eye’d beast. That wasn’t the end, not even close, but it sure as shit did some damage. She glanced over at Raz, who for a moment seemed to be struggling with the gore. “Keep it together, kid.” She said with a small smile, though what she was smiling at was a little unclear. This train fight was something else!

Now the giant monster was right upon them, so close she could practically reach out and touch it. They had moments to act, and the cannon wasn’t aimable anymore. They had to get the monster to back off. The idea seemed to be a boarding party.

Poppi asked her if the cannon was ready to fire. “Nope.” Jesse responded, popping her ‘p’.

Jesse decided to help reload the cannon. The minions were dealt with for now and while she dealt good damage over all, she didn’t have any big, high damaging moves that had long cooldowns which is what they needed to get this thing to budge. As soon as the cannons looked like they were about to be finished reloading, she’d hop back into the cockpit and prepare to make the appropriate adjustments. If it backed up a short amount, she’d aim for it’s mouth so the cannon would fire inside and not damage the train of the people on it. If it backed up really far, she’d try and hit the same spot the cannon hit earlier…unless it looked like the boarding party Seekers might still be there from their targeted attack. In that case she’d aim for its mouth again.

Karin watched proudly as her guests enjoyed themselves. Or rather, each other’s company. After all, Karin wasn’t here to be the center of attention! She was only here to facilitate the enjoyment of the Seekers company.

(And, of course, to find out more about who they were and what their goals were.) Karin knew hero types. After all, she was one of them herself. Not long ago she had participated in destroying M. Bison’s Shadaloo base, delivering the final blow herself with her personal orbital satellite cannon. But M. Bison was a threat to the entire world. If left unattended, his pestilence would spread across the globe like a plague and devour everything. As terribly cruel as the war with the Abyssals was, ultimately, it was a local problem. What could have possessed this eclectic and miscellaneous band of do-gooders to travel from afar and interfere so drastically? With no obvious external reward and with great mortal peril. Altruism only went so far as a reasonable explanation. It would hardly be reasonable to expect local heroes to travel to the other side of the world to deal with their issues. Karin herself has been an arbiter of justice and a keeper of the peace while staying at Limsa. Therefore, one must conclude that the Seekers had an ulterior motive. It was right there in their name: Seekers. What were they after?

Link, a dashing young man, approached her and thanked her for the service. “Oho, of course. It was no problem at all! I assure you, even someone of ravenous appetite cannot deplete the Kanzuki clan of our resources. I have plenty of practice with that kind of thing.” She cast a glance over at Birdie, who was lounging in the ocean in some kind of floatable.

“By all means, help yourself to as much food as you’d like. Just don’t get sick.”

Karin watched the volleyball game, keeping her criticism to herself for once. After all, she had set up the net for them to play.

“Well, Ishizaki-san. I do believe this to be a success thus far.” She said as he showed up with a silver tray of brightly colored drinks with various exotic fruits sliced up and cut into the edges.

“Ee-yup!”

“‘Ee-yup’?” Karin looks at him down her sunglasses.

“Ee-yup!” He repeats with a wink. Karin rolls her eyes and smirks. Of all her staff, only Mister Ishikazi could get away with such impertinence. He had special privileges, since he had been a part of her life as long as she had been alive.

More Seekers arrived, being Geralt and Yennifer, though Karin didn’t know their names. She overheard one of them asking about her, and Karin moved effortlessly from one conversation to the next, to make herself known to new party guests.

“That would be me. I am Karin Kanzuki, Mistress of this summer estate. You two are quite the-” She glances over at Geralt, and then Yennifer. “-handsome couple, if I am reading the proverbial room correctly.”

Well. They had discovered the boss, and getting Phalanx pissed off had proved to be somewhat useful for everyone except Braum. Things kinda worked out in the end.

Jesse had gotten onto Phalanx by jumping up and air dashing over to it, barely clinging onto the bottom of the creature. Swearing rapidly under her breath she clambered up, dashing into the thing and letting her momentum carry her up and over.

She trailed behind Raz, not even bothering to fire her pistol at the giant weird worm thing. Nothing they could do would put a dent into that big boy.

She clambered onto the train with the others and was glad they could get the monster's attention away from the civilian population. As long as it was chasing them, they could beat it and kill it. They picked up yet another straggler adventurer to add to their motley crew, and Jesse was glad for it. Galeem didn’t use spies- Galeem only used giant monsters. As far as she could tell anyone willing to take on a giant monster was trustworthy.

She took a few potshots at the encroaching minion swarm, taking a moment to stare down the impressive maw of the giant creature that was following them and tearing up the tracks. A shake of her head and a raising of her eyebrows conveyed her conviction.

The onboard AI insisted upon something called a Thermal charge, which Raz took care of. The Phantom Thieves manned the turrets. Several other members defended against the swam and manned the other stations and… Jesse blinked, staring at the empty main gun seat. It was it’s own little cockpit with controls to aim the cannon. Like something you’d see on a battleship. She was right there! Someone had to do it, right? “I’ll aim it!” With a grimace, Jesse clambered into the seat. The others used the side stations to get the cannon even remotely close to correctly oriented. Which meant Jesse’s one and only job was actually aiming the damn thing. Fortunately, the big monster was pretty damn hard to miss. She was fairly confident she could eyeball it. Jesse lined up the shot. “Does that look good from your angle?” She made a few more minor adjustments to get it just right.

Jesse glanced over at the operators of the machine that turned the cannon. “Is this a bad time to mention I never actually graduated high school?” She said dryly. Mostly for her own sake. She thought it was funny, anyway, though she didn't smile, to add to the comedy.

Once the cannon was lined up and all the preparations were made, Jesse put her hand on the firing trigger. “Cannon’s firing! Get ready!” She raised her voice over the din of the battle, and with a heavy mechanical clunk she pulled the trigger.

Finally. Kasugano Sakura returned to Limsa. It was exactly how they left it- happier, even. Despite only leaving two days ago, it felt like a lifetime. Sakura wondered how she had changed, if she had at all. If she had, it would probably be in ways she hadn’t noticed. That was the one thing she had been worried about back on the airship, before she even met Bella. That a war would change who she was. Make her lose her innocence. Sakura was determined to hold onto it, convinced it was a choice. She wasn’t naive… she wanted to be brave. There was a lot of badness in the world and she didn’t want to contribute any. Sakura’s trip wasn’t perfect. She had her regrets, especially on the Maw. Carl and Duerage, the lost robot companions. Frog was gone. Delsin. Others her frazzled mind struggled to sort through.

She was definitely exhausted. Sakura found a bed in her own room, same as the others. She detached her harness and fell hard into it, sleeping like a rock.

When she awoke, the delivered item that caught her eye the most was the letter from Kanzuki Karin. More than anything she wanted to see her friend and rival. But she couldn’t yet. Karin once said that Sakura was “not the Sakura she once knew,” and she was right. Sakura needed to get her head in the game and remember why she wants to fight Karin in the first place. It’s not to save Karin. Karin can take care of herself. No. If she wanted to win, she had to do it for the right reasons.

First, she had to visit Peach. Then, she had to track down Arashio’s old squad and deliver unto them her spirit. Then she would visit Karin and challenge her to a duel, and this time she would win. Karin was one of the finest martial artists on the planet. She had access to the most expensive training, and had done so since birth. She was the most influential woman on the planet.

But Sakura was Karin’s rival. She wasn’t going to let Karin forget it.

She tracked down Peach. “Excuse me, Miss Peach. Could you, um, please remove Arashio’s spirit from me? I want to deliver it to her friends. And I’d like my old body back.” She bowed at the request.
