The Background

Ellira, a peaceful world full of a large variety of people and races. There hadn't been all out war since the beginning of the Third era nearly 1500 years ago. The date is 5E 168, ideals have been changing slowly for the last several decades. The Kings of Provinces are slowly starting to be influenced by their people and as such have started changing their views on one of the most widely accepted practices of the world, magic. Since the Age of Dragons and even since the creation of the world, magic has been one of the most influential aspects of people's lives. Many had sought the study and mastery of the arcane art. These mages eventually formed colleges in the provinces that most openly accept and use magic. These colleges act as a safe haven for mages to come and practice their magic without fear of harming others, they may also study in any of the many schools of magic such as Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration and Illusion magic. However, many are starting to believe that magic is an art that has outlived its usefulness and necessity in the world and have started to ban the use or study of magic. These anti-mages believe that magic is a disgusting practice that alters the world as the gods have made it, that it is destroying the image the gods had for the world and must be stopped. This has caused outrage in the mages and their allies who believe strongly in the usefulness of magic to maintain stability in the world, they believe that the gods granted man with magic to survive. This contradiction of ideas has led to a lot of tension between provinces, both calling for unified action against the opposing side. Although no fighting has officially broken out there are many extremist movements from both sides taking far more drastic actions to give their side the advantage. The pro-magic extremists: The Gilded Cross, are moving in many ways, both using magic to destroy towns of anti-magic provinces, regardless of the ideals of the people in the town and researching powerful dark magic to separate the anti-magic provinces from the mainland and cast them a drift at sea to bring peace; and the anti-magic extremists: The Broken Wand, who are simply sticking to murder, destruction and imprisonment of mages and mage sympathizers to reduce the number of opposing forces to their reform. For now there is peace, but it is unstable and threatened with every passing day.

Rules:

1. Typical no godmoding, powerplaying, metagaming, etc.
2. Angels are a rare breed. If you want to play one ask. The worst I'll do is say no.
3. Assigning a minimum post lengths is asinine given the different monitor sizes people have. So a minimum of 150 words is requested for each post, please do your best to meet this minimum,
4. Please let someone know if you're going to be offline for extended periods of time.
5. OOC is for plot/rp/general discussion. Please keep OOC in the IC section to a minimum.
6. PM me all of your bios.
7. To keep things simple I am going to put a limit of 3 characters for each player for the time being. Special exceptions will be allowed if and only if it is necessary.
8. I retain the right to add rules that you will be expected to follow. To quote a Lieutenant of the Air Force, "Don't be a shitbag" and you'll be fine.

Just gonna poke this thread for a second.

Also, I don't think there's a character limit to each post... No need to reserve space. :P

I'm used to character limits. On the Runescape Forums it was 2k, on the DC Forums it was 10k. The only place I don;t know whether or not it has a character limit is the proboards forums.

What about Shadow Magic(Not in the terms of Necromancy). If I put up a lot of detail about it could I be a Shadowmancer?(To put a mancer at the end off it).

You would have to describe it. I can't say one way or the other since I'm not sure what shadow magic is.

Sounds good. I'm glad you think so, a couple of my friends and I worked hard to create this on another site. It had a premature death 6 pages in so I thought I'd resurrect it here.

Shadowmancy

Shadowmancy was adopted by a sect of Necromancers hundreds of years ago by the Children of Shadow devoted to wielding shadows for a multitude of purposes, it still requires some basic knowledge on Necromancy as it requires using power from the nether which is the space which is the direct opposite off our own world, where life starts with Death and ends eventually with Birth when a soul is either moved on or returned to the land of the living for whatever purpose. Shadows are the overlap between these two dimensions as light is the seep through to theirs.

Shadowmancy does not believe that this balance should be tampered with, while the Necromancers seek exclusion while they bring about what they call The Passage an event that will merge the Nether and the real world meaning that the dead and living co-exist at the same time and the world stays as is, no-one can die and no-one can be born. The Children of Shadow do not want this to pass, they live longer than the average human similar to most sorcerers and think that it is their role in life when they pass on to make the power of the Nether even stronger and thus increasing the power of their order.

Abilities

Shadowmancers can wield shadows to different levels of success depending on training. Those low down in the order may be able to bolster physical attacks and throw one or two spears of shadow at people, as well as constructing a temporary weak barrier between themselves and incoming attacks. They can also hide themselves within shadow easier than anyone else.

Those of moderate ability can control tendrils of shadow either from their own body or from areas of the room with ease, using them to grab hold off people or objects and moving them around. They are also better at sneaking and defending themselves with shadow.

Those who have exceeded in the use of shadows and are by all means deadly with it can do an ability known as shadow walking, where they disappear into a cloud of shadow and appear somewhere else. Naturally the more skilled the user the further they are able to shadow walk however this is nowhere near as long range as Teleportation can be and is far more extraneous on the user.

Shadowmancers also while they can control some degree of shadow by themselves infuse an item with raw power from themselves which acts as a conduit for there power and can only be used by them unless they give permission for someone else to use it. Even the most skilled off Shadowmancer finds himself with very little ability if his item of power is lost. However this item can be anything, ring, pendant, cane, cape.
