Welcome to Hell. There are no red men with horns, wings, and pitchforks dancing amidst flames here. Not many men left, I imagine, and any who are sure as shit ain’t dancing. All that stopped five years ago, and even then it was too late. Spring of 2013 people all over the world watched the skies with bated breaths. Meteors illuminated the skies leaving glistening streaks as they rained down from above. A few meteorites survived and strange things happened. Little made it out. Governments shut it down fast, people chalked up what they saw to Bath Salts and religious extremism. We pretended nothing was off for two more years. Stroked ourselves as a second meteor shower lit up our skies in two years later, Summer 2015. The world we knew fought and fell. Some remained, undead or just corrupted, and some not too bad at all. Ultimately, all fought to survive.

Five years changed the world. Undead, gangs, and havens vied for power. Well-meaning settlements like Evergreen Haven fell in conflict with the Legion and 1007th. Records of what came next are scattered.

This is the Apocalyptica Book. I’m no academic. I’m educated, but was rough around the edges even before the world went sideways. That said, the Old World taught us that history can be the key to not repeating past mistakes. My aim is to create Apocalyptica’s first historical record. The places, groups, dangers, and most notable people are all here. Let’s hope it does some good.

I.

Old World maps don’t apply anymore. Well, not the ones in common use anyway. State borders, city limits, even minor roads just don’t exist. The United States are gone; there is only Apocalyptica now. Our world today uses state names, cities too, but nature’s reclaimed much. Our territories rose from a few brave settlements called Havens. This should be a notice to just how lucky we are.

Florida. The Sunshine State. I don’t know, I’m not really seeing any sawgrass touching the sky. I don’t even know what sawgrass is. Florida’s a strange place. The haven's not all of Florida, though. It’s just the southern tip of it.

It’s kind of like the haven forgot the world ended. There’s people partying on the beach - they have paper lanterns strung-up everywhere and booze and some live band is playing one-hit-wonders from the ‘90s. Oh, a firework just went off. Yeah, Florida’s like that one drunk uncle who has no concern for who sees what it’s doing.

I mean, it’s great that it’s relaxed here - and apparently you don’t have to work if you don’t want to, which I’m almost 100% I misunderstood - but it’s too chill. There’s this “Council” (AKA Florida’s government) who runs everything really strictly apparently, which I think (if I remember correctly) is an oxymoron. It’s like Disneyland and the Pentagon merged into one. It doesn’t make sense. I mean, I get how they’re so under control and got this survival thing under wraps and all - and that’s why they can celebrate the end of the world 24-freaking-7 - but it’s… it’s odd. Like, I don’t know what to feel about it.

On the plus side, they have like, three layers of walls that not even the biggest horde of HAMs could get through. So it’s pretty fortified. There’s also loads of food - and not just the canned crap everywhere else has. All the veggies and fruits are grown in “urban farms” (whatever that means), and the meat is real meat, probably something that had eyes. I feel kinda fancy being here.

Aaaaand another firework. Green this time. People are getting wasted on the beach. Stay classy, Florida.

EVERGREEN COLLEGE__________________________________________________________________pg. 2

Two stations in Washington braced in the early hours of the Great Outbreak. Civilians fled to Fort Lewis and the Vancouver Barracks in northern and southern Washington. When Vancouver fell, trains rushed survivors northward -- myself included. We met with Fort Lewis’s forces and relocated to Olympia’s The Evergreen State College, a school amidst a thick forestry, jutted against a river, and built high with thick walls. Those who survived improved the institution. Rooftop gardens, electric fences, car walls, and a system of paths between tall trees made ours an almost mythic haven. Best of all, we had a Council to give both civilians and soldiers a voice. I was proud-- am still proud of what we achieved. But others wanted what we made. Come October 2020 the Legion sieged. We survived, but by a dirty deal my superiors made without Council approval. The 1007th gave us victory and that very day took control. Our thriving community is a husk now. Something out of Orwell. Something wrong.

AUGUSTA______________________________________________________________________________pg. 3

Somehow Augusta always remained standing. It never had the best defences and it always took everything the citizens there had to rebuild what was destroyed by endless undead attacks. But every time after they won the battle, they would build-up - stronger walls, more barbed wire, better strategies. They never did waste time; once the outbreak was reported in Mexico, Augusta started barricading the town. They used whatever they could and did what it took. There was never a large population in Augusta, so how such a small haven stayed so strong for so long is anyone’s guess. I heard someone say once those reasons are exactly why Augusta thrived: there were never a lot of allies but alway a lot of enemies. The entire population became one hive-mind army, all in it together for survival.

Getting into Augusta was always a challenge. There were undead everywhere. Beyond their walls there was little they could do to keep the dead away. They worked at thinning the crowds converging at every wall, but it never fared well. Winters were easier. Augusta was bitter in winter. The dead became more lethargic, less of a threat. As cruel as a winter in the apocalypse may be, it meant restocking their food stores, expanding their defences and disposing of the dead easily. In some aspects, Augusta was better off when the snow fell.

It’s a town on the East Coast, right on the river. The ocean’s just a little ways down. Augusta was always big on ships; as a haven, it was their trademark. If all else failed and the haven fell, their evacuation plan was resting right on the water. Augusta had the luxury of sending scouting parties out on water to look for safe land or areas to scavenge. They didn’t do that well when it came to supplies, and staying in Augusta meant going hungry. But they didn’t give up.

Chico was one of the bigger Havens, mostly because it was kind of four Havens lumped into one. You had the actual Chico Haven, where most of the people lived (and it had the most impressive defense walls I’ve ever seen), then you had Oroville… which I think was only good for the dam they had there that provided water and electricity. I don’t think a lot of people lived there. Then there was Orland, where all the farms were, and lastly Marysville. I never visited Marysville, but I heard you could hear nothing but the dead on the other side of the walls there.

RENO_________________________________________________________________________________pg. 5

I was pretty much there at the beginning of Reno Haven. Can’t say it’s changed much since then and I can’t say it’s a good place to be. I mean, yeah, it’s pretty safe from the deaders being in the desert and surrounded by a concrete wall and all, but it’s not the undead you need to worry about there. Most of the businessmen around there are… what’s a nice term? Morally ambiguous? Yeah, that. You gotta be street smart to make it in Reno. Fuck around with the wrong guy and you’ll wake up dead in an alleyway or not being able to find someone willing to sell you a glass of water. The militia generally tries to keep everything peaceful, and the leaders mean well, but they can’t be everywhere at once and they’re pretty lax when it comes to who they let in the walls. I’ve never seen more outbreaks than when I lived in Reno.
Fun is still a pretty big seller there, though. It’s got a lot of that Vegas mentality going and you’ll always find someone willing to buy or sell one of the big three: drinks, drugs, or sex. If you need to relive some of the old-world, Reno is one of those Havens you can do it in. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

BISMARCK_____________________________________________________________________________pg. 6

It wasn’t like the other Havens. There were no great walls keeping us in and them out. There were no trenches or land mines or heavy artillery stationed at watchtowers spaced every hundred feet apart. Just barricades we made from what we found. We put up lots of fences and we patrolled them, day in and day out. It was right in the middle of a city with trees everywhere. It was out of the way, so we didn’t always see lots of undead. But the people of Bismarck never stopped. They were always helpful and willing to fight, and maybe it was that determination that kept things going.

There were lots of fields outside the Haven and a few sub-districts we left alone. Eventually those fields were turned into farmland. Even knowing what was going on to the rest of the world, it didn’t feel a bad in Bismarck. There was always lots of food and warmth. We had gas –there was a gasoline refinery just across this river, and it still worked for a while. It was in another little city, Mandan. It was never fortified like Bismarck, but there were never enough undead there for it to be a danger zone. Groups of people would go out on day-trips to scavenge for necessities, and they always brought back more than enough gas.

There were lots of hunters and lots of wild animals to bring home. I never felt comfortable enough to relax there, but I could see why others did. It wasn’t the most well-defended Haven out there, and it would fall easily from a horde, but the people knew how to make the most of it.

COLORADO SPRINGS___________________________________________________________________pg. 7

For the longest time, nobody really knew about Mackinac Haven. It’s super secluded, being an island off the coasts of the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. Yeah, it’s the same Mackinac that was a tourist town back in the day. You know, with the fudge. People live in the hotels that covered the place, or built homes from the trees. Most people there are fishermen or hunters that are sent to the mainland to get food. The water protects them from the undead almost all year long, but it’s a northern haven and it gets super fucking cold in the winter.
For a few weeks a year the lakes freeze over enough for zeds to walk across them. They call it Horde Season, and it takes the entire population of the haven to fend off the zombies that gather on the shoreline throughout the year. They’ve fenced in the island, but shit still sucks. I’ve only been there for two of them, but I don’t think I’ve killed so many zeds anywhere else in my travels. Once and awhile I’ll get word that some condemned pirates have raided a haven boat or two, but they don’t pose much threat to Mackinac itself. Their leaders keep everything pretty orderly, along with their volunteer force. They get a little too big for their britches, sometimes, and can be a little harsh on their punishments for breaking the rules too. Trust me on that. Other than that it’s an alright place, I guess. Kept my family pretty safe for a long time.

Being in Topeka Haven was… uncomfortably comfortable. A lot of people just called it “The Church” because it’s a really religious Haven. They had some socially backward ways there, but a lot of the people were nice, wholesome people who just needed support and the Church gave them that support. It had this Western feel to it, like with cowboys and saloons from those old books. They had fences and walls in some areas, but nothing too extreme. The dead just never went around to those parts… it was like they never wanted to.

At dinnertime when the weather was right, we’d have these really big dinners outside on wooden picnic tables until the moon came out, and everyone would laugh and talk. The clothes they wore were bland and you had to work no matter what (and they stuck to some real sexist gender roles), but some days it just felt like home.

It used to be run by a madman named Caecilius. He was kinda seriously warped. He corrupted a lot of the Church because he himself was corrupted. He used to think he was a beacon for God and that God wanted him to do his bidding by converting everyone into the Church, because every sane person thinks that way. He used to send out search parties to find people and, “with force”, make them go back to the Church. Otherwise they were slaughtered – no, sorry, “cleansed” from the world.

Yeah, it’s definitely a better place now that Misty Raines has taken over.

BAKER DAM______________________________________________________________________________pg. 9

This place is probably one of the most isolated setups you'll ever see, and one of the smallest too - a community of about seventy-eighty people at most, tiny when you compare it to the setup they had at Evergreen. Located in upstate Washington, Baker Dam's technically made up of three separate dam systems which run subsequently down the Baker River, bordering nearby Concrete to the south. Most of our people live inside the area surrounding the northernmost two, West Pass Dike and Upper Baker, whilst a few hours downriver is another group who keep the Lower Dam running and often send our crews down into the surrounding area to scout what the lookouts miss and gather what supplies we'll need.

In case you're wondering, we have a leader of sorts - a guy who we know better as C'. He's not what you might call the friendliest of people from a glance, and it's obvious that those tattoos of his aren't just for show, but he's dedicated to keeping us going and a fighter through and through, the kind of leader we need in a time like this. That's not to say that we don't have a say in things: C' keeps a 'council' of different guys who handle separate matters like our supplies and defenses, but if we bring something up its heard likelier than not. Granted, we can't rely on thick walls like they do in California, yet we have a ten-foot barbed wire fence that's more than enough to keep anything unwanted from wandering in and on the off-chance that they do slip through, C' keeps enough guards on patrol to make sure we don't lose anymore of our own. Some might call it too much of a risk, but most other places don't have access to power like we do from the dams, and in a time like this you'll find plenty of people willing to trade sitting behind thick walls in cold darkness for sitting behind a thinner wall with some light and heat.

The only real thing that we've got to worry about these days is the 1007th. Some of us won't admit it, but C' knows better that the jarheads will take this place if they find it, and some of us already had to leave our homes at Evergreen to avoid that before. We won't let that happen again.

Truthfully, I would have too before this all started and even our news called the earliest incidents religious ritual taken too literally or simply Bath Salts. But rumors like that don’t produce journals through time. They don’t create journals documenting strange beasts, their dangers, or where they roam. Today we are lucky, but we are not safe. Pirate Crew/New Farmers
The Pirate Crew and New Farmers are difficult to describe. We know them today for their influence on the world, good and bad, but unlike other organizations listed here, they defy being labels. Hard to believe, but every account describes them as a group who just sort of collected. What we know is many accounts show that the Siege of Evergreen was pivotal. Either there or shortly after, the group(s) formed. Members might separate a while, but they never seem gone long. We’re lucky for that.

Legion
The Legion was born under Emperor Guy Keyes. A strong, charismatic man with para-military experience and a respect for the Ancient Roman Empire, he formed the group in their image. Ours is a hardened lot, tested through action with our minds set on the greater good and our souls given in the name of absolute loyalty. We hail from many backgrounds, yet in Legion we are one. Keyes reigns in the west, set on solidifying control in order to establish a new civilization. In the east, many say I reign. Here spreading is less a concern than maintaining our lines. Bandits without loyalties, the Condemned, challenge the lands we’ve built.

The Western Legion stronghold is in eastern Oregon. In the Eastern Legion, I have walls and various safe-zones around the former US Capital. We are more stable here and, truthfully, I am concerned to hear that Keyes may soon move onto this ‘Evergreen Haven’.

Listen, we’re not like the others. We don’t buy or sell humans, don’t crucify or torture, and we don’t think take pretend to be some higher class. The 1007th are all that’s left of the good ol’ Red White and Blue. Our aim is to use our training to return order -- that’s it. Freedom means sacrifice. I admit sometimes we act like the devil, but if that’s what it takes to bring back the old America so be it. We started in the east and Evergreen was a big step forward. Why still fight us? We aren’t some big group trying to take over, we are just a skilled, selective bunch who know what it’ll take to get right. If a hundred gotta die so we can bring safety back, so be it. Why don’t they get that?

When they first took over our community, it was to 'protect' us from the dangers of the outside. The dead, the bandits, the legion - it seemed like we'd found ourselves on the better half of the deal, until they started bringing down their authority upon our heads. Twenty four hours a day under martial law isn't a way to live, and yet when we spoke up or even dared to act against it they just blurted on about how it was for our 'own good', and necessary for the restoration of the United States of old - right before they shot us down and shipped the rest off to some far-gone labor camps to 'reinforce our loyalties to the American people'. I'll tell you something, whatever kind of America they're hoping to bring back, it's nothing we'll ever recognise.

Our Council is now a puppet, they have taken our voice. Evergreen will be free again and we won’t wait. This disease must die before it spreads further. Revolution is coming and we are its Shepherd.

Condemned
You know how many people were in the American Prison System before everything went to shit? 2.3 million. Yes, that’s right - 2.3 million inmates locked up for crimes ranging from tax evasion to first degree murder, and even before it all went to hell it was barely under control. When the infection hit us and the country began to fall apart it wasn’t long before the inmates realised that everything was completely fucked and ended up taking over. These days, they’re a dangerous bunch who don’t take too kindly to outsiders and are just as much of a problem in some places as the bandits or the Legion are. Though, the word is that they respect anyone who can ink them up with tattoos, and there’s a couple folks who reckon that if for some mysterious, suicidal reason you wanted to talk with ‘em - the tat man’s your guy.

Siege of Evergreen, October 2020
The Evergreen Haven, a stable and strong community was faced against the Legion for control of the land. While the haven had many defensive strategies in place, the combination of undead and Legion proved too much. A deal made in the background by a few offered salvation. The 1007th repelled the Legion on behalf of Evergreen. The Siege ended within a day, resulting in Evergreen Haven falling under complete 1007th control.

People of Interest Format


I have collected accounts of those associated with the Pirate Crew and New Farmers, mostly written in personal journals and diaries. This collection is by no means complete and I suspect new material will keep surfacing. Many of these people seemed to have thought they might be worth remembering. Fortunately, most established basic and complex characteristics such as name, a rough age range, appearance, their personal histories, their personalities, and what they often wore and used as weapons. The writing must have been therapeutic, all noted a couple strengths and a weakness they felt stood out in them. I find these important as material surfaces about their exploits and challenges. I am thankful that most of the journals described their histories briefly, the highlights really, most detailed up to November 2020. On a strange note, nearly every entry was about a page (roughly 1000 words), though some were longer or shorter -- like a damned class requirement.

FIRST! *self high five cause nobody else is here* So, here's my plan: Back in the 60's I developed a weather changing machine that was in essence a sophisticated heat beam we call a laser . Using these lasers we punch a hole in the protective layer around the world which we call the ozone layer . Slowly but surely the ultraviolet rays would pour in, increasing the risk of skin cancer. That is, unless, the world pays us... a hefty ransom?

Yeah, that just happened. I quoted Austin Powers just so I could use the airquote smiley things. You're all welcome. Anyway, here's my old CS:

Physical Attributes:


Cassie stands at an even 5’8 with a wiry, athletic build and probably weighs about 130lbs fully clothed and soaking wet. She’s a natural brunette and her hair has an affinity towards turning a little blondish if she’s outside long enough and reaches midway down her back. Her face is long and angular, with a small nose and a crooked, mischievous smirk. Her eyes are hazel, but lean more towards the green side than brown. She has several scars that she’s proud of, including large jagged one down her right leg after she ate dirt from flipping off of a motorcycle which then proceeded to land on her. One may also notice that the range of motion of her left shoulder is not all that good due to a previously broken collarbone. She’s broken most of her other bones too, but they don’t bother her until the weather starts to change.

Attire: Cass is normally found wearing mostly red swoop pants with a black ass and knees, and white down the side. The pants are made specifically for skydivers and are made of cordura; a super tough, rip and tear resistant fabric. It’s the same stuff that many rucks, backpacks, and other things of the sort are made from. The black portions are where there is some extra padding, which comes in handy during the apocalypse. As for a top, that changes regularly. If it’s hot she’ll mostly be found with just a white tank top and will add layers as needed all the way to a heavy, white winter jacket. She wears running shoes for quick mobility and lightness, and has a pair of Oakley sunglasses that are always either on her face or on top of her head. And though technically equipment, she would also consider her skydiving rig (black, red, and white like her pants... skydivers have a thing about matching their gear) as part of her attire since it only leaves her back when she needs to repack her chute. She normally carries it like a normal backpack, only using the two leg straps when she plans on jumping off of something.

Personality: Cassie is… well, she’s crazy. Not the psychopath, serial killer type of crazy but no regard for her own safety, adrenaline junky type of crazy. She was like this before the end of the world, though not quite to the degree she is now. She will do basically anything to get a rush to include acting as a distraction to a horde of starving zombies. Ever watch a zombie horde turn into an undead waterfall as they chase a parachute wielding woman off the top of a skyscraper? Hang around Cassie enough and you will probably be able to mark that off your bucket list; it’s her signature move. She’s extremely extroverted, some would say eccentric, and some would say just plain bat-shit crazy. Someone who will walk up to a complete stranger and act like their best friends can be a bit off putting, especially in this day and age, but to most it’s oddly comforting to have someone who remains so upbeat and friendly. Cassie isn’t one to hold a grudge, though she can have a bit of a short fuse at times. However, when she gets mad it lasts as long as it takes her to pop the offender in the face one good time, then she can laugh it off and go about her day. Despite her rather goofy, good-natured outlook on life Cassie is surprisingly smart. If you start her going about communication tech, be prepared to get chattered at about radio wave propagation theory and the art of constructing antennas from a Pringles can.

Before the Infection: The best explanation as to why Cass is the way she is can be found in her childhood. She was born in a Podunk town in southern Michigan that was known for two things: the good whitetail deer hunting there and a nice little drop zone that catered to both the avid licensed skydiver and anyone who wanted a thrill in that corner of the state. Cassie was the result of two skydiving instructors that worked there deciding a baby would be a fantastic idea. She was raised by the skydiving culture; her family was the regular divers that came every nice weekend to jump. Now, being raised by a large collection of people who thought normal hobbies included jumping off/out of a variety of things may not have been the best place for a little girl as they seemed to have created a high-risk taking, adrenaline monster. She participated in a cornucopia of sports, all of which held an element of danger above your average baseball game; motocross, BMX, skateboarding, etc. and the day she was old enough, skydiving and base jumping.

After her high school graduation, Cass moved out to Hollywood to make a career out of being a stuntwoman. It seemed like the only choice for one such as her. Might as well do what you love, right? Not only did she love it, but she was damn good at it too. She was the go-to girl for several big film companies for quite a while. It was after crashing on a crotch rocket during a shoot at nearly 90mph and pretty much becoming a human skid mark that was laid up in the hospital for three months that she realized that she could not, in fact, be a stuntwoman for her entire life. So, she slowed down her career enough so that she could start taking night classes at the local university for communication technology and get herself a plan B. Now, you may be asking yourself why one such as her would choose a major in communications (see what I did there ) and the answer is simple: curiosity. How do cellphones work on the same or incredibly similar frequencies without people having bleed over from other converstations? How do people bounce radio waves off the moon with a ham radio and send messages to Japan from Georgia? How does tracing and tracking signals to the device making them work? These are just some of the questions she had wondered at over the years. From her grades it seemed that she was some sort of closet techy; she picked up everything faster than she could fall from the sky. It was a year after she achieved her Bachelor’s degree that the end of the world started. It was actually quite ironic seeing as she had been doing stunts for a movie that had been under production about an apocalypse, but with aliens rather than zombies.

After the Infection: As soon as even the slightest whiff of the outbreak reached Cass, she hopped on her bike and was out of Hollywood like a bat out of hell. Being in a big city with a rampant disease that made people mindless cannibals? No, thank you. She headed for the desert and eventually found her way to Reno after a few weeks. She didn’t last long there however because safety also happened to mean boredom and she needed to find something she could do to make a living again. Her skill with communications became the answer and she became a mix between a trader, salvager, and drifter.

She would leave the havens all by her little lonesome to find her parts that she didn't trust anyone to get, going places that most others wouldn’t dare due to the danger like the top floors of a skyscraper (a death trap unless you happened to have a parachute like her). This worked out fairly well for her, toughing it out on her own, until she had an "accident" one day. That is, if you could really call setting the truck she was using on fire and crashing it into a gas station to kill a horde of infected an "accident." Cassie was fine... mostly. She had tied the wheel to stay generally straight and jammed the gas pedal down with a piece of metal she'd salvaged to keep it going. After, she opened the door and swung herself into the bed and then proceeded to deploy her parachute as her emergency ejection seat before she got too close to the station. The landing was rough and she got some scrapes, bruises, and a minor case of whiplash from it, but she took care of most of the infected. The others seemed too distracted by the explosion and she was able to sneak away. After walking for two days in the middle of nowhere she was picked up by a roving band of Condemned, which was its own misadventure. Long story short, she offered to build them all radios so they could communicate with each other in exchange for not raping/murdering her and a ride to the outskirts of the nearest haven when she was done. Both parties ended up keeping to their bargain, though Cassie figured it was more of a last minute decision on whether or not she was actually going to get back after handing over the headsets she'd made. After that, she decided she didn't much like going out on her own anymore. She may be crazy, but she's no masochistic wanting to be tortured by the Condemned.

So now it’s not odd to find her hopping onto a leaving group of salvagers’ convoy where she generally convinces said group to let her in on it with the offer of being the human distraction should things get bad. As far as that goes, she has to be either one of the luckiest or craftiest people left on earth, though probably the former. After she finds what she needs, Cass takes her goodies back to the nearest haven where she can tinker to make whatever it is that people in that area are in need of, radios, antennas, etc. Her skills are a hot commodity in the havens, so she cruises back and forth mainly from Chico, Reno, and Washington though sometimes she’ll venture out as far as Bismarck and Colorado Springs.

Arsenal: Cassie carries things that she can easily wield and secure should she need to jump off of something (which is more often than you might think as she has a tendency to gravitate towards high ledges). Therefore, she has Glock 23 pistol which is a nice .40cal with Trijicon iron sights (they radiate their own light) and a muzzle break which makes for a lot less recoil and a lot more noise. This she has in a lower leg holster on her right. She also has a nice hatchet, with about a foot long handle, which she keeps strapped to her left thigh. The sharp side is great for chopping body parts off, the back side for bludgeoning things over the head. She will use both without hesitation. Other than that, she uses her wits to get herself out of trouble.

Strengths/Skills/Talents: She’s a decent shot with just about any weapon, but anyone who leaves the havens does. Due to her past occupation as a stunt woman, she can also drive just about anything extremely well (not to mention fast) without killing herself. She’s practically a genius when it comes to her radios and is slowly but surely improving communication within the havens. She’s also pretty good when it comes to tinkering with other technology or mechanical things too.

Weaknesses/Problems: First and foremost, she has a general disregard for her own safety. She has gotten herself into countless deadly situations that she could barely get herself out of, if she could even do it without someone else coming to her rescue. It’s a miracle that she’s still alive and not infected. Like was previously stated, her multitude of old injuries make her sore and stiff in adverse or quickly changing weather (she doesn’t do too well in the cold either), and she doesn’t have good range of motion in her left shoulder.

Vehicles: Cassie is currently owns a dirt bike that had been modified for racing. She likes its maneuverability and ability to traverse pretty much any terrain.
Home Base: None, really. She drifts pretty constantly.

Standing at a rough height of about 5'11, Coltrane could be considered something of a physically imposing individual, possessing a somewhat stocky build with a slightly weathered physique, though his age appears to have toned this down just a little bit. Alongside his dark brown eyes he sports a head of hair that appears to be of a very dark shade, and he has a tendency keep it butch-cut. In contrast, he sports a beard which has more of a tendency to stand out than his hair. However, he does well to keep it groomed and it seldom appears as anything more than trimmed-down. Across his lower left neck is a scar from being stabbed with a shank in prison, and similarly he bears a small amount of scarring across his abdominal region for the same reasons.

Attire: Typically, Coltrane is never seen without his trademark jeans and grey vest, though this may become subject to change depending on the season and the weather. During the colder months, he's known to slip on a jacket, though usually that's the limit, as additional clothing tends to slow him down.

Personality:

Without a doubt, Coltrane is a man with many regrets. Having wasted his youth on a life of violence and intimidation and spent the better half of his years in prison, he heavily regrets his past decisions, and to some extent feels pity for those he hurt in the past, and for those who helped him to hurt others, noting that the gang life was a 'vicious, never-ending cycle'. In addition, he feels a heavy amount of guilt, both for having killed and caused the death of several friends and his own father, which still haunts him. Outwardly, he can be an optimistic, sometimes friendly fellow who keeps to himself, and despite having conformed to a more quiet and resigned life whilst incarcerated, he still bears something of an angry, bottled-up temper which can be released when pushed to his limits, and it’s at this point where he is at his most dangerous. In particular, violence and abuse towards women and younger children can spark off this temper. He also bears a strong set of personal morals and principles which, since his abandonment of the Condemned, he has chosen to stick by no matter what. He also has a fondness for classic American cars, such as the Chevrolet Impala or the Dodge Challenger.

Before the Infection: Born in the late eighties in South Central Los Angeles, Coltrane, grew up in one of the city's african american ethnic enclaves amid a time of gangs and the crack epidemic. Coltrane's father was like many other working class individuals, earning an honest day's living working as a mechanic at the local autoshop. He had a particular hobby when it came to cars, something he passed down to Coltrane as he grew up, and by the time he was ten years old the two had begun spending hours in his father's garage working on restoring a classic '64 Chevy Impala SS he’d bought to pristine condition. Sometimes when the two were having a disagreement, his father would even take him into the garage and try to settle their issues through talking, all whilst he polished the Impala and played soothing Bob Marley tunes on the radio, and it was much to Coltrane's ire at times that his father often encouraged him to work an honest living as opposed to getting involved with the gangs and becoming trapped in the vicious cycle of crime.

Yet, it was to his father's dismay that Coltrane ultimately ended up becoming associated with the very same crowd he’d tried to steer him away from, first off through close friends who were like-minded in their desire to earn 'easy money' through various means, such as acting as a lookout for local corner crews and passing the ‘laundry’ between dealers. As Coltrane grew older, so did his involvement with the gangs. Least to say, his father grew worried about his son but at the same time optimistic for the future, and despite the elevating seriousness of the crimes that Coltrane participated in, he still encouraged his son to try and turn his life around and follow a 'straight' path, yet his advice fell on deaf ears. Meanwhile, Coltrane became more and more desensitized to the violence and corruption around him, witnessing friends die at the hands of rival gang members just because they’d been working on the wrong corner or wearing the wrong colors. One time he saw such brutality against the sister of his best friend Tyreke ‘Ty’ Richardson, who frequently suffered at the hands of her abusive, drug addict boyfriend who was trying to coerce her into working as a prostitute to fund his habit and left her with regular bruises. After one bruise too many put her in the hospital, Ty enlisted Coltrane’s help in taking revenge and when the two found the abuser getting high in a crack den, Ty beat the man to death with his own crack pipe whilst Coltrane watched.

Desensitized to the violence, Coltrane had started carrying a gun around with him wherever he went and as he grew bolder and more arrogant, he’d begun to use it not just as a means of scaring off any would-be muggers or people threatening to rough him but as a means of intimidating others. More than a few times he found himself holding up a dope fiend at gunpoint for their money and their drugs, but he’d still not actually used a gun or killed anyone. That soon changed, however.

News hit home that whilst Ty had been driving his sister, his girlfriend and one of their mutual friends to a nearby block party, they’d been attacked by a number of rival gang members in a drive-by in retaliation for shutting down one of their corner crews. Ty’s friend and his girlfriend had died on the scene, whilst Ty himself had initially survived the shooting but died on his way to the hospital. Only his sister who was in a critical condition because of her injuries had survived. Furious at this, Coltrane and several others planned revenge. When word came out on the streets that a rival corner crew captain by the name of ‘Pitbull’ had been responsible for the hit, Coltrane and two others piled into an associate’s car and headed off to a ‘cruise’ where gangbangers from all over South Central had met up to show off their tricked out cars with custom hydraulics and fine-tuned ghettoblaster systems where Pitbull was attending with several of his own friends. Arming himself with AK-47 acquired through their Black Mafia Family associates, Coltrane and the group waited until Pitbull was exposed out in the middle of the street before they circled them in the car once and opened fire, gunning down Pitbull and two others before making a beeline for their own neighbourhood.

‘An eye for an eye’ was what Coltrane told himself, yet deep down inside he was afraid of what he’d done. Afraid of what was going to happen to him, about either ending up in prison or ending up dead in a reprisal from the rival gang. A few days afterwards he’d learned that one of the others who’d participated in the shooting alongside him had been arrested and charged with the murders after the AK-47 used by Coltrane had been found stashed in his house during a routine drugs search, though they weren’t able to figure out who the other prints had belonged to. Another week passed by and still things were quiet, but his luck ran out almost a month later.

Whilst eating at a fast food restaurant with several friends, Coltrane saw himself being tailed by someone who he recognised as belonging to the same rival crew as Pitbull had and quickly ducked into the restroom. When he was followed inside and threatened, Coltrane pulled a concealed weapon on him and threatened him at gunpoint, only to be interrupted when he heard another voice warning him to drop the gun; an off-duty LAPD Officer who’d walked into the commotion and had called for backup before heading inside with his own weapon. Pretty soon, Coltrane was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and making criminal threats with a firearm.

Whilst the two charges alone alongside the gang association would've been enough to keep Coltrane inside for at least eight years, when his fingerprints were taken he was finally linked to the earlier shooting of Pitbull and his friends and after another member of the gang turned informant in order to have his sentence reduced, he was charged with participating in the shooting as well. An open-and-shut court case soon followed, and Coltrane ultimately received a 25 years to life sentence for all three charges. Soon enough he was on his way to the California prison system to join many other individuals like him who’d ended up incarcerated through their involvement with the gangs.

Only a week after his arrival at a maximum security penitentiary where he began his sentence, Coltrane was hit with the news that in retaliation for the earlier shooting and the threat on Pitbull's life, several rival gang members had plotted revenge against him and had fired a volley of bullets at his front porch during a drive-by in the middle of the night and that his father had been killed instead of him. The guilt almost crushed him and when his younger brother refused to visit him anymore and his mother was too upset to leave the house, he nearly broke down altogether. In the following years after his incarceration, having seen the older inmates who were in for hard-time and witnessed the harsh reality of prison life, he slowly began to realise his failings and what he'd done wrong, and how he'd only helped further fuel the cycle of the violence. These ideas were only further cemented when an attempt on his life was made by an old gang rival with a shank, which led to permanent scarring around his neck and lower abdominal region. Cutting ties with his old gang, he was able to take the opportunity to think over his actions. He came to regret his actions, and for essentially ruining his life, and pondered whether or not if he'd ever be able to integrate back into society if he was ever released.

After the Infection:

Typically, when the apocalypse came and law and order began to collapse, the prison system was the first thing to cave in under itself as inmates rioted and overwhelmed the already struggling guards, claiming the great complexes as fortresses of their own. With places such as Los Angeles in ruin under the feet of the legions of dead, the gangs had nowhere else to go and after a brief power struggle amidst warring factions, the dust settled and a new faction rose from the ashes, a loosely connected group of former inmates identifying themselves as the 'Condemned'. Coltrane had been fortunate enough to keep his head down and avoid getting stabbed in the back of the neck by a rioting inmate or shot by a panicked guard, and with the gangs slowly dissolving to form this new unified faction, he had little other choice but to go along with it for safety.

For a while, the prison facility was relatively secure, with great massive fences and walls to keep the infected out, alongside any would-be scavengers or 'outsider' bandits. In addition, riot armour and weaponry acquired from the armory had left the inmates with a small arsenal and a means of which to hold off organised attacks, which served to keep it under their control after a brief, failed attempt by the National Guard at reclaiming the prison. But, as things would seem, the supplies left within the prison were limited and the food reserves would, at most, last little more than a few months for the surviving inmates. As much as he disagreed with their attitudes and methods of dealing with people, Coltrane had little choice but to go along with the cold, calculating nature of the Condemned, out of fear of what they'd do to him after seeing many others meet rather unfortunate fates. He kept to himself for the most part, guilt accumulating as he watched other inmates callously murder other survivors, sometimes for their supplies and sometimes just for sheer amusement. He wanted to intervene and stop them, but knew he couldn't. At least it was what he'd told himself, at any rate.

Meanwhile, other time the Condemned had been able to acquire a number of stolen vehicles, including a 1964 Chevy Impala SS which bore an uncanny resemblance to the very same one that he and his father had worked on during his childhood, though he shook it off as a simple coincidence and at the unlikely chance of the inmates having gone so far into the overrun streets of Los Angeles just to steal the car. Yet it haunted him just a little bit, as it reminded him of his father and of how he'd hoped for him to live a good life, instead of ruining it as he had. Again he ended up trying to ignore the matter, instead offering his mechanical skill as a way to contribute to the group instead of having to accompany them on their 'pillage and burn' runs. It worked for a little while, but eventually he was called up for yet another scavenging trip, yet this time there would be a different outcome.

Placed behind the wheel with three other inmates, Coltrane’s group were ordered to head down to a nearby town to scavenge what little supplies were left. He obliged them, and decided to wait in the car whilst they went out to retrieve the goods. Yet, the sound of gunfire caught his attention, and as he approached the scene he spotted the inmates holding up a small group of survivors which appeared to consist of a small family, an man in his mid thirties with a wife of similar age, alongside a boy of roughly thirteen years old and a younger daughter who looked to be about seven or eight. Stragglers on the road had been one thing, but families? Coltrane couldn't take it any longer and attempted to talk them out of harming them by appealing to their better nature, only to be completely rebuked. When one of them made a remark implying a desire to sexually abuse the daughter, he snapped.

It'd been the last straw for Coltrane, who had grown sick and tired of watching the inmates go about their brutal and callous ways and no longer able to live with himself. Armed with only a toolkit which he kept around for working on the cars, Coltrane turned on the others and bludgeoned one of them to death before stealing his pistol and gunning a second man down, whilst the other one bolted for it down the road. Almost forgetting about the bewildered family of survivors who’d just witnessed the scene, Coltrane offered a simple 'Sorry', tossed them a small bag of supplies from the back of the Chevy and set off with it, looking for another place to go.

He couldn’t nor would he go back to the prison now, nor would they let him walk a metre through the gates after the surviving inmate brought word back to them, but right now he didn’t care. For a while he lived on his own, occasionally running into other groups both friendly and not, though he kept to himself partially because his past still haunted him and because large groups were often trouble. Rarely, he’d find himself tagging along with a small number of people for a short period of time, but either way they’d end up being separated and Coltrane ended up alone, choosing never to stick in one place for more than a few months.

Eventually a passing group told him of a strong community far up north in Chico, a so-called ‘safe haven’ where people were rebuilding the world. It sounded like a pipe dream, but spending so many years on the road had left him weary and tired. He wanted to find good people, and he wanted a fresh start. He was optimistic, and so he set off towards Northern California taking the Eastern Route, sometimes using the highway and sometimes taking the back roads. Luckily enough, he’d been running out of gas just over thirty miles from the outer borders of Chico when he’d got lost that he’d been fortunate enough to stumble into a convoy of other survivors; a man by the name of Daryl among others. He gave Coltrane a good vibe and the two became quickly acquainted, and after helping out with a truck that refused to start back up it was decided that Coltrane would come along with them.

Arriving in Chico, Coltrane made it past the screenings without too much hassle and saw it for what it really was; a paradise on Earth, perhaps the last paradise on Earth. It wasn’t just about being a safe haven, but the closest thing to returning to life as it was before the apocalypse. He saw children playing in the streets, people laughing and arguing with each other in bars and shop owners trying to haggle off their goods, just like before. For all that he’d done in his past, he saw something worth starting over for. In his time here he became acquainted with several other people which Daryl knew, including the mechanical savant Wess and the young woman, Abigail, who Coltrane befriended over conversation. He also met Daryl’s other friend, Acacia, who he saw just a little bit of himself inside of her and who wanted to leave Chico on a scouting mission to help protect the community from the bandits. He’d been wondering how he could put himself to use in this new world, and he saw it as an opportunity to make up for his past. A place like Chico needed protecting, and with his knowledge of Southern California and Los Angeles and his own experiences of surviving out there on his own, he knew he could contribute. It wasn’t long before the two left again, this time headed straight back south.

Arsenal: Fire Axe (Hopefully you'll get the reference), a loaded Glock 17 and technically his own physical strength (That's not to say he can tear off an infected's head with his BEAR HANDS and punch through plate steel with his BEAR HANDS, just that he's not exactly going to have trouble crushing the skull of a downed infected).

Strengths/Skills/Talents: Naturally, Coltrane is something of a physically imposing individual, owing to his physique. Whilst he isn't so strong that he can perform abnormal feats of strength, in physical combat he tends to have the advantage in being a heavy hitter where he might not swing as fast as others. Blunt or heavy objects, such as a baseball bat or a fire axe, are best put to use in Coltrane's hands. Due to his previous experiences before and after incarceration, Coltrane has a considerable amount of knowledge and experience with firearms, particularly with readily available pistols such as the Glock 17 or the Colt M1911. In addition, he's also quite a well fielded mechanic, and has a great deal of experience and dexterity when it comes to working with and maintaining cars.

Weaknesses/Problems: Whilst not entirely lumbering or slow, Coltrane isn't particularly as agile or quick-paced as others in his movements, owing to the stocky nature of his physique, and he isn't particularly as skilled with a blade as others might be. He also struggles a little with modern electronics having never really had the opportunity to handle them during his incarceration, so his computer literacy skills could be put into great doubt should the situation ever arise.

Vehicles: Chevrolet Suburban 4WD. (Technically Acacia’s, but he uses it all the same)

Comments: So yeah, managed to rebuild the lost parts of Coltrane’s app and improve upon it. For what it's worth, I've quite the experience with the apocalypse theme. For example, I watch the TV Series, Comic Books and both seasons of Telltale’s brilliant Video Game adaptation of Robert Kirkman's excellent The Walking Dead.

I still have all my sheets though I'm deciding not to bring the Sentinels along this ride, and also instead adding Racheli as a secondary instead. Mainly cause I had way too many characters in the beginning so it's limited to 2 now. I might also do a bit of Abigail's revamping a little. First, though I'm subscribed, I never saw that anyone posted. Thought this was sinking, so you can imagine how freaking happy I am to see this sort of activity.

@Everyone: Aweena and I are aiming for a narrative-like Character Sheet style for Act 2. Think like you're writing the CS first-person after the fact (never know who may die, so, maybe avoid suggestions it's super-far into the future. This basically means CSs can be pretty loose, even conversational, or diary-like. The same basic info will be included, but it'll give your character more flesh as you write in their mind and not as if separated. We do not require first-person posting IC. This is just to flow with the journal-style of the OOC we're creating.

@Alarie & Peik: Make sure you're ready to commit. We're not this heavy RP that posts three times a day, but we do expect dedication. In the past we've generally had posts pop up 1-2 times a week. When people are separated into sub-groups they can move at a nice, comfortable pace -- everyone's pretty understanding. That said, we've had a lot of people I'd dub "assholes" who sign up and disappear spontaneously. I implore you, please join us if you're down to help build this wonderful world of potential. Creative freedom is yours, we restrict you little and wish only to build off your genius. Don't make us all waste our time investing in someone who won't be here in a week. I trust you both will do beautifully with us, so please, join up! We'll have a CS structure built soon, but go-ahead and piece together the basics in the meantime.

@FF & Zombie: Damn right! Excited to have you both back :3. We're expecting Prom as well. Should Fallen return, we'll have a significant original character base.

Welcomed with open arms! Check out our Long-Term Google Doc for the Character Sheet, or simply wait a day for the OOC to be officially posted up.

@Everyone: We've been working hard creating a journal-like feel built up of character explanations of beasts, groups, and havens. The character sheet too will be narrative, unlike those we've had in the past. Basically, give us one more day to get up what we have (a few havens may still be WIP, but that's fine). We have an introductory plot idea that you're sure to love, very free for choice of course, so we should be rolling very, very soon. I'll say then, check out the Long-Term Google Doc and start working on those Character Sheets. I'll be posting it officially tomorrow with the rest of the OOC. I'll note that they are Narrative-Based (check out our examples in the Doc) and we're looking for ~1000 words -- loose maximum, you can go over a bit, but too long and you may lose readership, shorter is totally fine.

I think I only went about 20 words over that... mainly due to Abigail flavor, as for Kurtis, Remmy, Jose, and Cash I think it might be best to sort of just delete them for now. I've told Aweena and think I mentioned it on the OOC that I don't plan on bring the Sentinels around this time, at least not for a while. It's easier to keep focus on 2 PCs, which I plan on bring Racheli in on this, a character fave of mine, but there's one problem. Since it's written by her, I can't see her detailing her past-even when forced-due to the fact I know her personality rather well since I've played her several times before. It never feels right or makes sense for her to unless someone pries in then its only as little as possible. (There's a reason for this!) I also thought it might be slightly more fun to reveal her history IC throughout the rp to the PCs that get to know her when I do intro her into Apoc.

Currently I've got her history written up both post and after the infection which I aim on sending to both you and Aweena incase anything about it clashes with things in this new set up. Though while I can still do a narrative write up, I don't want to be penalized for her not wanting to go into her past, mainly early years before everything as she would put it 'went to shit'. (It's a touchy subject for her for many reasons.) Would it be alright to do this?

I wouldn't throw them away. Perhaps give them very succinct, short bios noting who they are affiliated with (Playable Characters or Organizations, I mean). If you want to hold off until you see an example of this feel free. I'll be doing it for a few of my people. By doing this you can expand later if you end up switching around (people could die) or otherwise just keep options open. How does this sound?

We do plan on separating NPCs and Secondaries a bit. We're currently talking about what the narratives for Secondaries would be like, but it seems pretty solid that NPCs would be very brief snippets as/if relevant.

Works for me and can do, though I might change somethings as last time some things didn't smoothly run as well together as I had hoped.

We've updated the OOC OPs now. More style will be added as the coding becomes more elegant. I'll sharpen up my post tomorrow evening. Important note! The Character Sheet is narrative and what we expect is described by The Author at the end of OP Post #2.

Woohoo! An updated and nearly-completed OOC! Props to whoever's been working so hard on it.

Now that that's all established, it may be time to get around to discussing where we're starting off in the IC. Shon and I were thinking we'd do a semi-time-skip. Because a lot of us were in-transit to our next destinations to get to our next sub-plots, we thought it'd be best to jump over the travel time and have our characters already be there so we can tackle those, accomplish what we wanted to with them, and move on.

We don't want to lose interest yet (because after such a break it could get stale quickly), so Shon and I are also working on a plot device that'll affect everyone (whether you include your characters or not is up to you however). It'll happen immediately after everyone's finished with their current sub-plots and it will bring us all back together as one big happy family for a nice, apocalyptic reunion,

Thoughts? Concerns? Compliments?
