Codename: Shadow

RECRUIT REPORT OBSID-LAT43.LON-717
DATE - [REDACTED]
RECRUITER: A. BROWN
Comments Updated by A. Brown

Age: 25

Power: Shadow Manipulation - Subject has, by far, one of the strangest and misunderstood abilities yet. While others can be explain via scientific methods and facts, there is little explanation on how the subject (aka Shadow) is able to manipulate shadows in particular. Normally one manipulates light to change shadows, not drawing shadows themselves into the light without blocking objects. Regardless, noted below are known abilities of her new found power;

Night Vision: Subject seems to have the ability to see in complete darkness, up to 120 feet, with a slight note in improved vision outside of this. Quartz injection has genetically modified subject's eyes in this case.

Darkness Curtain: Subject is able to infuse the surrounding area with a sudden burst of darkness, ranging from a moonlight-like condition to complete darkness. Though the stronger the curtain, the longer subject needs to potentially charge her personal reserve of energy.

Hard-Light Construction: Limited to small objects for the time-being, subject is able to (unexplainably thus far) create solidified objects from shadows. Subject has tenancy to lean towards melee-like weapons and personal body shields. These constructs are hard enough to deflect bullets, but extreme testing still needed to gauge potential limits.

Shadow-Melding: One of the more mysterious abilities, subject has the ability to physically meld within shadows that are not her own, allowing her short-distance jumps from one shadow to another and in some case, turning ethereal as to avoid physical harm. Limitations are unknown.

Personality: Subject has shown a strong will towards a private goal that lines up with obedience to Obsidian objectives. Though unknown, this goal has obvious physiological effects of giving the subject resolve and courage. Subject is also a known introvert, though sociable and willing to work within a team environment. This could be seen as a potential set-back to team-building, but subject makes easy use of being friendly and sensitive to the feelings of others. This paired with an ethic towards efficiency and loyalty makes subject well suited as an Operative.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Subject is a quick learner and has displayed signs of having of superior abstract intelligence, grasping complex subjects and ideas easily, though communication has proven difficult at times when trying to get ideas or plans to make sense in subject's mind. She has gained a noticeable grasp of her powers, wielding them with surprising efficiency, however noted here is her apparent weakness to light. Though in most normal conditions, she is able to grab hold of some shadows and make use of them, during conditions that require extreme lighting her effectiveness dulls quite a bit. Subject is recommended to undergo specific stealth training and tactics due to her affinity with blackout operations.

History: Subject Codename Shadow; Born August 3, 1989 in Denver, Colorado.

Orphaned by unknown parents. Bounced through several foster homes until subject felt the need to branch out on her own. She turned to petty gangs and theft, gaining a criminal record, though a noted Robin Hood complex, despite gang demands. Avoided rape or abusive treatment within gang due to her unusual friendliness and gathered respect, along with homosexual orientation. By some unusual amount of personal strength and martial arts training, she survived the streets of Denver against outside influence including the DPD, homosexual protestors, and other gangs until the point of contact with a certain Beth Collins.

Beth Collins, serving within the DPD (ironically), was able to draw subject's introverted nature and gear her towards a more lawful path. After two years and an engagement, Beth was killed in the line of duty by a drug dealer from subject's previous gang. Since the incident, she has holed herself up in an abandoned warehouse and continued to practice martial arts to an extremely dedicated degree, along with the return to theft for food. She was contacted by Obsidian to start a new life, free from the bounds of her previous life. She accepted with little hesitation, especially after the explanation of the Quartz injection.

Other: Subject seems unusually educated for having grown up in the streets. Has been noted that she keeps her personal goals or wants a secret, but no threat to Obsidian objectives is seen here.

Leviathan - That power sounds good. Perhaps you'd like to focus more on one specific power grouping as "nature" seems extremely broad. I like where you're going with either weather or the plant/animal influencing. However, it seems like it could lean towards being a bit overpowered.

Finished~! :D Let me know if anything needs changing.

[ Katherina Ady | 20 | Female ]

Codename: Citrine

Power:

--Causality Vision:

"The ability to perceive and understand all cause and effect relations." ~SuperpowerWiki. The user is able to see several steps into alternate futures depending on what actions are taken. They are able to know what's goings to take place seconds before it happens, and can take the best course of action since they already know all the effects of a cause.

In combat Citrine can adapt to all variables before they even appear. This makes her ability in a fight almost flawless since her efficiency in offense, defense and strategy is at its highest level. If there is slightest chance for success, she can make the correct steps to get there.

Citrine's vision is constantly filled with translucent golden paths/shapes that objects and people in real-time eventually catch up to. She takes great satisfaction in knowing what will happen, and what could have happened in the next twenty seconds. She likes to think the other possibilities she sees happen in parallel universes.

Limits: Citrine's ability is vision-only. A blindfold would nullify it. She can constantly see up twenty seconds ahead of her of all possibilities, but nothing more and nothing less. She certainly can't predict the future, and she can't manipulate luck. If there is zero chance for the desired effect to happen, then she won't get it.

--Empathy:

The ability to sense emotions and temperament within other people or animals. In Citrine's case, not only can she feel these things, she knows the exact location this emotional broadcasting is coming from, and she can pinpoint living emotions around her like dots on a radar.

Due to her curiosity, Citrine tends to turn this ability on and off repeatedly to 'read' one person here, one person there. That way it doesn't take up too much energy. In combat she'll try to have this ability on high for the most part as its excellent for pin-pointing locations of enemies.

Limits: She can sense only as long is she's aware. It takes energy to to be so emotionally receptive to feeling those around her, so she can turn it off at will (by not thinking about it.) She can keep it up for hours if she wants, but the mental downswing after can be quite the headache. The radius of how far she can feel can be anywhere between 10 to 32 feet.

Personality: She likes cat videos. If you were that kind of person she'd give you that wink, as if she knew you were in on the guilty pleasure too. Citrine's personality flows like water, always in harmony with conversation. Her disposition is naturally good-natured, and she's often charming with a hint of humor. She's a curious old soul who enjoys talking about her ex-con adventures, and jokes she'd get back into the biz in a heartbeat. Her ability to see cause and effects has increased her tendency to ponder, and she enjoys sharing her ideas. She's incredibly open-minded. Although she shows genuine emotion, she does not attach herself to people, likely an old habit from conning. Sometimes her own apathy worries her.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Her speech and persuasive skills are very enchanting, and she knows how to read a person's body language. Her powers compliment these as she uses them to be confident of her situation at all times. She's curious, she picks up on things quickly and considers her eyes her largest asset. She can pinpoint the location of emotions in people around her.

Becoming a slight insomniac after the Procedure, Citrine has a developing fear of closing her eyes at night. Sometimes she struggles for hours trying to fall asleep, and is occasionally sleep-deprived. Her distaste of Obsidian collars currently edges on a quiet fear, even though she's never worn one. She's also consistently aware of the microchip kill switch floating around inside her veins, and she stresses on her clashing philosophies with giving someone the remote to extinguishing her life.

History: Growing up into a family of con artists, it was encouraged of her at a young age to be perceptive of people. Her father said it wasn't what came out of their mouth, but what their eyes, their hands, and everything non-verbal said. That was the stuff you had to see in order to gain your target's trust.

As she gained experience and grew up some, her morals began conflicting with the business. She knew what their family did was wrong, but it was the one thing that brought them together and she considered them too important to leave. So, over time she started ignoring that nag inside her, until it was no longer there and she could clinically detach herself from her target.

Several years ago Citrine and her brother devised a glorious plan that scammed hundreds of people out their investments in a phony marketing business. But after they withdrew the millions of dollars and drove to a safe house, Citrine found herself at gunpoint.

"I won't kill you," said her brother. "But consider this the end of our dealings. Put your share down slowly, and walk away."

Hurt with feelings of betrayal, Citrine left. The money didn't mean much to her, but family did. At that point in her life she wasn't in contact with her father, mother, and now her greedy brother didn't want anything to do with her. He even took it a step further and pointed the police in her direction in an effort to get them off his back.

Ever since then she's been on the run, doing little street cons here and there to pay for cheap rent. That's around the time the Recruiters approached her. She didn't like the agreement, but she had no direction in her life and thought, "What the hell. Might be fun."

Other: Her weapon of choice is a sword and a glock, at least most of the time. She picked up on the training quickly once she had her eyes.

It's due to her golden-laced vision that she chose the codename Citrine, (and the fact Citrine's a quartz.) The sudden beauty of seeing more around her in such an artful way really stuck with her. Citrine doesn't believe she she could ever give this ability up, and just thinking about seeing in plain, unyielding vision again gives her the chills.

I love Citrine as well. Very original of you, Estylwen.

I might be changing Rustopher drastically in the coming day or two. Just depends on the rest of the characters…might make him less combat and action oriented. *Shrug*

Haha, yeah, I'm sure they'll all get along in harmony. I can say that my character Lambda will probably like your character the most, Korbanjaro, and Citrine the least. I'm almost done with my CS, although it has taken me longer than expected due to today's commitments.

A note on this. I was planning to make something different and then thought, why not create something that is an example of what screwed up science like this can create? I submit to you The Cancer. I hope you enjoy the product of me twisting things a bit.

Name: Randall Jones (Formerly)

Codename: The Cancer

Age: Uncertain (Explained in bio)

Power:
Shapeshifting- (Note-)If you think shape shifting is a glorious power it would be best to think again. You can forget about what you see in most movies or encounter in most books. It is not a painless process, nor is it fun and glamorous in most cases. It is a power with a great deal of baggage attached, at least in this particular case.(End note)

The Cancer is a being constantly at war with itself. It is comprised almost entirely of living and sentient cancerous tissue that is both blessed and cursed with extreme regenerative properties as well as accelerated growth. The Cancer is capable of completely restructuring its own body into nearly any form that it sees fit, from various humanoid forms to things that best resemble eldricht abominations. Any part of the body can become a weapon at will and almost no injury cannot be overcome by the sheer speed of growth and regenerative aspects of the beings cells. Attempts by the company to install a kill switch of utilize other methods to dampen the powers have been largely ineffective, with the dampeners only working for a few hours at a time before being overcome by the power in question.

However these benefits are paired with some drawbacks that are important to note. As stated above, the Cancer is a being that is at war with itself. While there is a mind within the body that issues commands and has general control over the rest of the cell mass the control is not perfect and sometimes lapses at inopportune times. This can result in sudden and explosive involuntarily growth and form changing as various parts of the body experience runaway change and mutation. While these changes are easy enough to reverse and typically are caught by the conscious mind before they can get far there are times when the mind is not aware. For example when the Cancer sleeps all growth regulation turns off and in the course of a single night multiple tons of flesh can grow. This led to several accidents and incidents in the initial time after the injections.

In addition, should flesh be disconnected from the main body mass it will rapidly wither away and decay, melting down and losing its integrity within minutes. Fire is also a bane of the Cancer as flame cauterizes wounds and forms barriers that make it more difficult for the cells to regenerate. It is possible for it to regenerate from burns, but the process is substantially slowed. Due to this slowing it is possible that with enough fire and constant assault the Cancer could eventually be reduced to nothing and destroyed entirely. Finally in order to sustain the massive changes that are constantly going on, the Cancer requires a truly massive amount of food in various forms. It requires over ten times the amount of food that a normal human would.

Appearance: The Cancer does not consider itself to have a gender, nor a concrete identity. It adopts forms at will and seemingly with little consistency. To date it has taken on forms including but not limited to, forms that resemble depictions of angels and demons, a seemingly decaying mass of ulcerated and putrid flesh in the shape of a man, Randall Jones, a number of celebrities, the forms of several of the other experimental subjects, all doctors employed at the facility, and many others. It is also important to note that the Cancer frequently adopts forms of both genders and appears to favor neither of them.

Personality: Randall Jones was a man who specialized at living multiple lives. He was a man who recreated himself more times than most could fathom, a man whose schemes and cons had, at least according to his own statements been the stuff of legend. He was master of changing, of becoming others so perfectly that few could tell that the personas were a mask. Unfortunately the mind of Randall Jones, despite its flexibility ultimately proved more fragile than the tests would have indicated. 'He' no longer really exists, the changes ripping through his body, changed his mind as well. The being that he became, the Cancer seems to regard its former existence as little more than an incubation period before true birth. It is in some ways childlike, and seems to be easily controlled by authority. In fact it has been slavishly eager to carry out the requests put to it. But who knows the true nature of an alien mind born of such change?

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths- It possesses all the knowledge that Randall Jones possessed before his transformation, and as such has a wealth of understanding of trickery and how to become things so convincingly that few can see through the mask. This experience combined with the shape shifting abilities that it also possesses makes it extremely effective at infiltration. At least as long as it can maintain a stable form. Being incredibly difficult to kill is also typically considered a strength.

Weaknesses: The Cancer, despite it's seeming immunity to the tools that would compel it to obey also seems to have lost the arrogant edge that the man who it once was possessed. It at this time has little sense of what it really wants aside from the vague impulses of a new being. This has led to a slavish and almost unquestioning loyalty to the corporation that created it. While this may not seem the greatest weakness, unquestioning loyalty can have definite downsides.

History:

How to sum up the life of a man who swindled his way through it? Randall Jones was born in less than favorable circumstances, his family was poor and destitute, at least those few members who were not in jail for one crime or another were poor and destitute. It is little wonder that with no real support structure and a tendency for criminal behavior already present in his family that he ultimately took a less than stellar road with his life.

He started on that road of criminality early, with his first lessons coming in his elementary school days. At that point it was minor things, stealing lunch money, or swiping candy. But there were signs of darker elements as well, such as how he swindled others into paying him to keep other bullies away from them, other bullies who he was paying part of the money to have picked on the kids in the first place. Scheming was a part of his nature and as he grew older the schemes grew grander.

He faked and blackmailed his way through higher education with charm and trickery mixed with a hearty helping of bribes and then entered the working world. Naturally doing honest worked seemed far too boring for him. And once again the schemes began. A number of cons kept things flowing, at least until he ran into a bigger fish than he was. When the person you con happens to be a fellow member of the field, who also happens to have men with guns and a long reach you tend to wind up in a bind.

Still he was a tricky man, and when push came to shove he had a way out. He faked his own death, and shortly after was contacted by Obsidian. It seemed they were interested in individuals with his particularly devious and crafty skill set. With no good options at the time he accepted the offer and that was the last real decisions that Randall Jones actually got to make in this world.

He was ultimately found both physically and mentally fit for the procedure. But after it was performed things began to go wrong. At first there were few signs of any changes at all. The only difference seemed to be an increase in healing factor to a small degree. For several days this was the case, and he began to wonder if he, the great con artist had in fact been conned himself. When the changes hit, they hit like a truck. He went to bed and the next morning something else awoke in his place.

RECRUIT REPORT OBSID-LAT40.LON-73
DATE - [REDACTED]
RECRUITER: K. SMITH
Comments Updated by K. Smith in co-operation with the subject

Recruit's Real Name: Vernita Gale
Recruit's Chosen Codename: Lambda
Current Age of Recruit: 25

Power Obtained Post-Procedure: Persuasion
The recruit has thus far been honest and as descriptive as possible in explaining her abilities, although I have had her write out her thoughts rather than speak them as an extra precaution, a summary of which is outlined below:

The subject is able to use her voice to persuade (or, more accurately, command) others to do her bidding, and is able to broadcast an aura that seems to attract others to her and engender trust in them, but is also able to reverse this to the point where she does not attract any attention to herself.

Using her voice, the subject can command others to perform actions or persuade them to wholeheartedly believe concepts. However, the way in which it is used and the situation in which it is used in as well as the person it is being used on. For example, the recruit's abilities are more effective on those of lower or average intelligence than those of higher intelligence due to the fact that those possessing a higher intelligence tend to be more suspicious and ask more questions. Lambda's ability works best on those who trust her or at least have a positive attitude toward her, which her second ability aids in. Simple commands relating to actions are generally more easily implemented and require less energy, while more complex commands such as directing a person to bake a cake by listing off the ingredients and directions or changing a person's beliefs or making them forget or imagine things require more energy. Lambda's ability cannot make a person do things they are not physically capable of, however. For example, if the recruit told a person that they could fly using her ability, while the person might believe himself capable of flight, Lambda's ability would not make him physically able to do so. While usually anyone in almost any situation can be persuaded effectively by Lambda, there are some exceptions. The recruit's ability would be rendered ineffective by making Lambda's speech impossible. In addition, in certain situations or in cases where the person is trying to be persuaded against a previously deep-rooted belief, a person may break free of Lambda's persuasion. Lambda must also be conscious in order use her power, and since Lambda's persuasion requires a constant stream of power to maintain (unless in the case of temporary persuasion, such as telling someone to forget an event or after discontinuing use of the power on a person or changing another's beliefs) if she is ever knocked unconscious or for some reason goes to sleep, the use of the power will discontinue. A person may fight the ability if they are aware that they are being persuaded, although with significant energy Lambda can attempt to squash the person's will to fight and awareness of the situation.

As for the subject's ability to elicit certain emotions within others using her presence, it is the weaker of the two powers by a significant margin. Rather than a proactive power to be used in battle, it is more of an infiltrative power that only works when the other person is not particularly suspicious of Lambda or is not on high guard, even if one knows about her power. When the power is in use, the recruit can use it one of two ways: to attract people to her or direct others' attention away from her. When using the power to attract, the person or people must be within the same room. Lambda does not have much control of this power besides turning it on and off. When it is on, it usually slowly over the course of a minute begins affecting those in the same room with the subject, engendering within them a sense of trust in the subject or at least general goodwill towards her. In the case of those that are already attracted to the subject, they may claim they feel a stronger attraction to the recruit, a dedication or love almost. In the other direction, the power just seems to dampen Lambda's usual rather noticeable presence to a normal or almost unnoticeable presence, making eyes seem to glide over her form. This power is less effective if she is alone in a room with someone and doesn't usually work if someone has noticed or seen her before. It does nothing if someone has focused their attention on her.

Description of Appearance: Subject has long waist-length raven black hair (naturally) that she usually wears down or in a ponytail, braid, or bun and bangs that are swept to the left side of her face. Lambda has dark blue eyes. The subject here wishes to mention that her wardrobe is very fashionable despite what people might think given only a basic description. She also wishes to say that while she takes pride in her body and taking care of it, she rarely wears makeup as she feels like it "masks her natural beauty". Lambda stands at 5'8" and---even though the subject is at a very healthy weight, she wishes for it not to be reported here, only in the "official files". I have agreed to her request for now to avoid any conflict. Occasionally the subject will wear black glasses without lenses "for fashion purposes". The subject would here like to interject that she is not as vain as this description has made her seem.

Description of Personality: Based on observation of the recruit, it has been concluded that the subject is somewhat of a "pretender" and is very good at masking her true emotions. On the surface, Lambda is deceptively pleasant with most all people, even those she greatly dislikes, at least for a period of time. When Lambda does choose to make her negative emotions apparent, her tongue often becomes sharp and often Lambda shows her real self. In previous encounters, Lambda has been rather cruel, teasing and even torturing those who have crossed her. Lambda has been shown to be very manipulative, often playing with the lives of others, as demonstrated throughout her schooling and during her time as the leader of a gang. While leading the gang, it has been illustrated that the subject is able to kill in cold blood without guilt; it is suspected that Lambda has been made numb to such acts by her past. Even though Lambda seems to take joy in the manipulation of others, she is able to totally mask this and appear as a very kind, innocent person. It is known, however, that the subject is capable of love and most possibly craves it due to the lack of love shown to her throughout her lifetime. While Lambda will kill without provocation, she does not do so without reason, only when it is convenient. In fact, Lambda will do almost anything to turn the odds in her favor and make things easier for herself and does not seem to have any morals. It has been concluded, however, that Lambda will not kill other Operatives as this would be a greater inconvenience than anything else. The subject seems to shrewdly calculate any situation without bias, although she often acts impulsively. The subject does have a softer side, however, as it is suspected that she still mourns her twin brother. The recruit is also very fond of plants and fictional novels and has a strange preoccupation and affection for certain objects (cute things, fashionable clothes/accessories, jellyfish, good food, etc.).

Outline of Recruit's Strengths and Weaknesses: Strengths: The recruit is very good at masking her emotions and appearing to be someone she is not. The recruit will not shy away from any tasks but before her as long as she feels it is in her best interest to perform them. The recruit is rather skilled in physical combat, especially with weapons. During her time on the streets, she learned how to handle many weapons she had not used before, although her specialty still lays with knives and guns (particularly small guns and sniper rifles). In general, Lambda's aim is very good, although we have not yet gathered any statistics on exactly how good her aim is. Lambda has a high physical endurance and pain tolerance as well as considerable physical strength despite her slender figure. Lambda has proven herself to be resourceful as well as very intelligent. Lambda's power could be very useful in both combat and espionage missions.

Weaknesses: Lambda can be very unpredictable in her actions as well as her fighting style, which does not seem to follow any particular pattern. The subject can be impulsive, not caring about the results of her actions. In addition, she seems to be overly confident, seeing herself as a figure that cannot be defeated, and does not react well to defeat; being overly confident, Lambda often does not think completely through her plans, leaving them flawed, and her fighting style, if she is not totally on guard, can leave open spots for the enemy to land a blow. Lambda is not completely mentally stable and has certain ticks. For example, if she is pushed onto the ground with someone standing above her, she completely loses her cool and may become incapacitated. Lambda is also easily provoked by seeing animals or plants injured and is likely to start an unnecessary fight over such situations. Lambda is also uncomfortable with being alone in large spaces and actually has a phobia of large, flat, open spaces. The recruit is oddly picky about what kinds of food she will eat as well as clothes. Oddly, while Lambda is very good at dealing with "mean" people, she has a soft spot for people who are kind to her despite her personality and history, and remembers very well both those who have betrayed her and those who have shown her kindness.

Summary of Recruit's History: Lambda (previously Vernita Gale) was born into a rather well-off family to her parents Ryan and Tanya Gale along with her fraternal twin Samael as the first children in the family. As children, Vernita and Samael were very close despite being total opposites. Samael was noted by others to be much more extroverted than Vernita, easily making friends, while Vernita kept mostly to herself, focusing mostly on learning, and, once she had learned to read, breezing through harder and harder books. While Vernita and Samael seemed to be of equal caliber when it came to learning at first, as they grew the gap between them grew, Vernita breezing past Samael in her studies. Consequently, Vernita skipped both the second and third grades, leaving Samael behind. It is known that Vernita was very unhappy about this, wishing to stay with her brother as they were very close.

According to teacher reports, Samael started making friends outside of he and Vernita's shared friend group, which seemed to make Vernita angry. Vernita's teachers note that the girl seemed to have unhealthy possessive tendencies toward her brother, telling him not to make friends with other children because he didn't need anyone besides her. When Samael continued to make contact with the other children, Vernita began to commit violence against the other children. (This was when Samael was in 4th grade and Vernita was in 6th.) Vernita started at simply threatening other children around Samael, but continued on to physical fights (or rather, assaults) when they refused. Vernita was disciplined by the school, but it seemed to have no effect. The school began having regular talks with the twins' parents, suggesting counseling by a professional other than the school counselor, who was having no luck with Vernita. Teachers report that one day when Tanya Gale arrived at the school to talk with the principal after one of Vernita's fights (which usually happened around once a week) Vernita was in counseling with the school's counselor. Upon hearing this news, the principal and several teachers report that Tanya Gale "freaked out" and started screaming at the principal then rushed down the hall and pulled Vernita physically out of the counselor's office. Tanya Gale then left the school with Vernita without attending the meeting.

Soon after the trouble with Vernita started, Ryan Gale began working toward a divorce with his wife. Friends close to the Gale's cite Vernita's issues as one of the key fighting points between the couple that led up to the divorce. As both of the Gales were prominent politicians in the area, money was not the issue. Rather, it was the problem of how the kids would be split up. It is reported that neither of them wished to have Vernita and her troubles, both of them struggling to have Samael, who was sociable and kind, as their sole child. The school's counselor reports that Vernita somehow had found out about this and was very distraught. The counselor remarked that Vernita finally opened up to her one day, crying that her parents had never loved her, her mother having gone so far as to call her a "devil child", acting both afraid and angry toward her for as long as she could remember, and her father avoiding her completely for just as long. Vernita claimed that the only person who had ever loved her had been Samael, and that she couldn't afford to lose him to anyone, whether it be other children or her parents. Vernita also claimed that she would do anything to keep Samael with her, and the counselor claims that Vernita had an odd expression and that it was almost creepy in nature. While it was later uncovered that Tanya Gale had been sleeping around with some vagrant who had been wandering through the town around the time the twins would have been conceived, it is not certain that the stranger ever existed or that the twins were his children, although both of their parents have blond hair and brown eyes, not black hair and blue eyes like the twins have. In fact, practically no one in either of the parents' extended families have dark hair. However, it is still unclear whether Vernita's confession was true or if it was one of her earliest manipulations.

Eventually the court decided that Tanya Gale would take care of Vernita while Ryan Gale would take care of Samael. Reports show that Tanya Gale became frantic at the court's decision, pleading with the judge to change his decision. Tanya never gave any reasons, however, and it is unknown what made Tanya so wary and scared of Vernita, as neither of her parents ever talked to friends about the child. In fact, many friends only knew that they had one child named Samael and knew not that he had a twin sister. Regardless, Ryan Gale had not yet moved out of the house as they lived in the Manhattan Area of New York City and Ryan was having trouble locating a proper apartment close to his office to move into.

It was reported by friends that a few days before the tragedy Ryan Gale had discussed with friends a specific apartment that he was strongly considering moving into. During the night in the summer before Vernita's 8th grade year, neighbors reported hearing screams from the Gale house. When police showed up, they opened the door and saw a man with a knife standing over Vernita and immediately shot him down, causing the man's dead body to fall on top of Vernita. Police pulled Vernita out from underneath the man and tried to get her to talk to them while others searched the rest of the house. Vernita refused to speak, staring into the distance without focusing on any people or objects. As Vernita was covered in blood at this point, the police were unable to tell whether or not she was injured so she was taken to the hospital. Upon searching the house, police found that both of Vernita's parents as well as Samael had been brutally murdered. While police are still unsure exactly what happened that night, Vernita has refused to speak about the incident since.

Forensics show that the man broke in the back door, killing Tanya, then Ryan, then Samael. This is also indicated by the numbers he carved into their chests after their deaths and the corresponding numbers and letters found carved into Vernita's body. The letter T under the number 1 was carved into her right arm, the letter R and the number 2 on her left arm, the letter S and the number 3 found on her right leg, and the number 4 with the word YOU written under it on her left leg. For days Vernita refused to talk at all and was kept at the house of the police chief for lack of knowing what to do with the child. On the fourth day after the event, the police chief woke up to Vernita standing silently at the foot of his bed, blood dripping onto the floor. Vernita had used a knife from the kitchen to "scratch out" the marks the murderer had left on her body.

After that day, Vernita totally changed, becoming fascinated with her parents' murders and claiming that they were much more horrible to her than she had previously told the counselor. She often made disturbing remarks about how she was glad her parents were dead and how they deserved to die, saying that the sight of their dead bodies was beautiful. When she was asked about her brother's death, her face became blank, losing all expression, lapsing into an empty stare, and she would often change the subject. If pushed, she would claim that she had no idea what the other person was talking about, but she never claimed that her brother was alive. If her brother's name was mentioned, she would often say that she didn't know who they were talking about, almost as if she denied her brother's existence in the first place.

Eventually it was decided that Vernita would live with her aunt since she was the closest, although the aunt wanted nothing to do with her and totally ignored her. Despite her morbid attitude toward the police, Vernita showed a totally different face to those at school, crying when the tragedy was mentioned, and thanking others profusely for their kindness. She soon gathered a following and was often given gifts. When talking to her assigned counselor, however, Vernita talked about how none of them were sincere about their concern and mocked them, often laughing about how they followed her around like puppies. By the time the sensationalism of the tragedy wore off, Vernita had gained a significant group of friends and was well-known throughout the school. People came to her for advice, and Vernita would give them seemingly earnest advice; however, school officials soon realized what Vernita was truly doing. Vernita would spread rumors, instigate fights, make and break relationships almost as if she was playing a video game. When approached about the matter, Vernita seemed honest in her regret about what had happened but denied any involvement, seeming shocked. This fooled most of the school staff. Vernita continued through high school as if it were a game, staging more and more, larger and larger high school dramas while remaining on top of the social ladder. Vernita's grades and test scores were impeccable and, with the aid of her tragic past, she was accepted into Columbia University.

On the larger scale of the university, Vernita's antics were barely noticed if at all, though she was a darling among both teachers and students due to both her intelligence, physical attractiveness, and social skills. If she was ever confronted angrily about her duplicity, she would make sure she was around many people and then begin to cry and whimper, drawing the others to her aid. Once there was even a broken nose involved. Vernita double-majored in Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Sociology. Once graduated (1 year early in fact), Vernita began working at a weapons development facility where she secretly invented new guns and began selling them on the black market as well as to the company. Vernita lived in the crappiest apartment she could find in order to save up money for her next plan.

After working for the company for 2 years, Vernita quit her job and approached the largest, most powerful gang in the city, Bloody Gravity, and proposed her weapons to him and agreed to help manufacture these weapons for him if he gave her a nice place to stay and money for good food and clothes. The gang leader agreed as long as Vernita became an active member of the gang, going on missions and obeying orders. Vernita agreed and quickly proved her physical abilities and resourcefulness, causing her to become one of the gang leader's favorite goonies. After a few months, Vernita was promoted to the gang member's right hand person, displacing another who was very angry and promptly challenged her to a battle-to-the-death. Vernita easily beat him, knifing him in the chest before slamming his head into the pavement. From then on she was the most respected member of the group, even more so than the leader. After a startling defeat, Vernita began to plant seeds of a coup d'etat among the gang which slowly grew into a rebellion. One night Vernita and a group of her followers broke into the gang leader's apartment. Gang members restrained the leader while Vernita gouged out his eyes--the right of passage for someone forcibly taking over Bloody Gravity.

Over the next year and a half Vernita made her gang the biggest gang in the city, absorbing several other smaller gangs. Bloody Gravity became known for its extreme violent tendencies and especially by its leader, a girl who often tortured people herself for information. Vernita began acquiring a small fortune and living the high life. Vernita stored most of her money away from her home in a safe in an abandoned house as a precaution in case she became under suspicion from the law.

During a particularly bloody fight, the police arrested 13 Bloody Gravity members, one of whom blabbed about their leader's identity. The next morning Vernita woke up to the sound of police breaking down her door. Needless to say, the snitch was given worse than stitches. Vernita was charged with so many counts of murder it was "ridiculous" and was sentenced to death. However, Vernita began seducing one of the guards that worked her prison block, pleading that she was innocent and simply a scapegoat for the gang's activities, being a son of a former member. According to the guard's friends, he felt sympathy for the girl as well as an attraction to her which grew by the day. After a month, the guard offered to help Vernita escape from prison. I worked both from within the mafia and within the prison, monitoring the recruit. During the midnight shift, the guard helped Vernita escape by loading her into a box that he put in the back of his truck that he said the detention center needed, a box that formerly contained green bean cans. The guard drove Vernita on back roads to the edge of the state, stopping so she could pick up her cash. Vernita left, reportedly thanking the guard with a kiss.

Vernita was on the run for a month before an elaborate scheme was created in which the cops found her and reportedly killed her. Three cops were recruited to tell this story and then were killed off inconspicuously and separately to ensure that they did didn't talk. After recruitment, subject's records were deleted. Vernita Gale accepted Obsidian's offer happily and was deemed physically and mentally ready for the procedure, which the subject took very well. The only unexpected side effects are a change of hue in the subject's eyes, causing them to be a rather unnaturally blue color of blue and the subject's odd avoidance of the color white and the insertion of needles by others.

The subject took the codename Lambda. While the subject did not give an explanation on this matter, I believe it is a reference to the Greek letter lambda, which is often used in reference to the diagnosis of fraternal and early-split twins. As mentioned before, the tragedy is still a sore spot for the subject.

Notes/Concerns: While not important, it is rather ironic that Samael's name means "angel of death" and the name "Vernita" means "green spring".

Name:

Leila Marie Holmes. Has gone by several nicknames, see-through aliases, and street names in the past.

Codename:

Equinox.

Age:

19

Power:

Leila's power is rather interesting, in that she cannot actively control it. It controls itself. Leila's shadow has become...sentient isn't the right word, but it's not the wrong word either. Lelia's shadow has become a protective guardian angel of sorts, capable of taking physical form and protecting her from threats. Its reflexes, speed, senses and strength far exceed that of her own, and it is highly observant, constantly vigilant. While she's incapable of commanding it (she can sometimes pose suggestions to it, and if it agrees, it'll help), the shadow is nevertheless a formidable close quarters fighter. It's capable of changing form to adapt to the situation at hand, from a direct silhouette of its mistress to a lion to some more eldritch thing that doesn't yet exist. The shadow, predictably, grows stronger in darkness, but is by no means crippled in harsh light (even if it's at something of a disadvantage). Her shadow's capable of speaking to her and observing the world around it, allowing it to give her advice, watch her back, so on and so forth. If her shadow stays "two-dimensional", like a regular shadow, it can move and grab onto other people's shadows. This causes no lasting harm, but inflicts a rather nasty feeling of phantom pain that can be somewhat startling. It's only capable of causing physical damage, or enacting physical changes, once it takes its three dimensional form. Her shadow is limited primarily by range-it is only capable of reaching out as far as her shadow would normally go. In dark spots, Leila's shadow can darken and deepen the shadows around her, making her harder to spot whilst not totally invisible. Its primary function, however, is as a fierce protector, while also serving as a valuable scout and adviser. For the purposes of guarding Leila or helping her escape, the shadow is extremely versatile, and can use its knowledge (everything Leila sees and hears and such) and formless nature to its advantage.

Appearance:

Leila's not exactly your standard eighteen year old girl. For starters, while Obsidian training and dieting has helped immensely, she still looks a little on the malnourished side-this is the first time in her life she's been eating properly for sustained periods of time. Leila's Caucasian, more or less pale with a faint hint of Eastern European heritage. Her hair is a dark brown, and typically bundled up in a bun or casually strung up in a ponytail. She doesn't seem to pay too much attention to it, and it doesn't have the sheen or glamour that someone who takes better care of their might have. Her eyes are a cold, distant blue, and when she converses with someone she (somewhat unnervingly) stares at them without blinking, holding eye contact regardless of how painfully awkward it becomes. Her face has a few freckles, but they're faint, and there's a scar on her right cheek that's hard to notice if you aren't looking closely (and looking closely at Leila would prompt a "What the fuck are you looking at?", so most people don't). She's definitely on the petite side-with the proper meals that Obsidian's been providing, she's starting to put on weight (in a good way), but she's only about 5'4, weighing just a smidge over a hundred pounds, with what muscle her body can metabolically afford stretched out lean across her arms and legs. Her chin is somewhat pointed, a contrast to her small round little nose and chapped lips. A filled-in teardrop hangs just under the edge of her left eye, and it goes with her choice of dark mascara and eyeliner in a rather macabre way. Her outer arms are nicked with scars that are a little more fresh than the one on her face, and don't appear to be the typical remnants of self-harm. There's a long gash running down her right leg, from the inside of her knee to about halfway down her calf. Her back is engulfed in a rather intricate tattoo job, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding out Judgment Day, and a pair of phoenixes curl down her right shoulder and chest onto her forearm, with their tails showing when she rolls her sleeve up or displays anything above the elbow. The left arm is marked by what appears to be the Angel of Death. Leila moves with cold, measured confidence, and tends to have a scowl permanently plastered across her face. She tends to dress in a way that wouldn't exactly be described as fashionable, with worn sneakers double knotted onto her feet and an equally worn, little-too-big hoodie draped over her shoulders and arms. She typically rolls the sleeves of the red hoodie up past her shoulders and holds up her jeans (which sport a few frayed, worn patches and a couple of holes, some of which are artfully held together with duct tape) with a belt that almost appears to wrap around her miniscule waist twice. Occasionally, a Red Sox ballcap will be worn on her head.

Personality:

Fuck you, that's her personality.

No but seriously Leila does not play very well with others. Leila's not a bad person ,per se, but she's not a good person either. Leila's endured quite a bit without a lot of help to rely on, and the result is a cold, hardened girl who can play with the best of them. While she may not have been privy to a proper education past grade school, Leila's cunning and sharp. She's known for pragmatic approaches to her problems: Leila, while true to her word, doesn't bother much with the idea of "honor". She has a clear concept of right and wrong, but it's...a little more twisted than most people's. Leila's code of morality is pretty self-serving, and allows her to steal and carry out several types of illicit activities without feeling too much in the way of remorse (she typically steals from the well-off). Leila's lack of strong familial ties has resulted in her latching onto close friends and allies with unshakeable loyalty: while she is very difficult to befriend (mostly because she has next to no tact and laughably poor social skills) she's undeniably faithful once her trust is earned. Leila thinks there's a special spot in hell reserved for those who let their family or friends down, and she doesn't intend on getting a seat in hell THAT deep. Leila's pretty worldly, and very street smart-while she may not be as well-read as most her age, she can fend for herself and survive where others can't. The girl's pride and self-confidence are annoying some, but in a way, a survival trait-pushovers don't last long on the streets. Leila takes shit from no one, regardless of how deserved it may be. While proud, her pragmatism reigns supreme: she loathes accepting charity but is open to it if there's no other choice. She's fairly cynical of the rich and any charities: she views the government and the church (doesn't matter which one, she lumps them all together) with equal disdain. Leila's not a hardened killer, but she's by no means a coward. She can handle stressful situations and keep her cool, and also possesses a remarkable poker face. She can come up with believable lies off the top of her head and is a decent actress, too-she spent some time as a con artist, exploiting the "I'm a poor girl all alone in the cold" angle. Leila's a tough one, and while she may not physically be able to throw down with anyone above 5'6 or so, she's tenacious as hell, and will exploit every advantage she can to win. Leila's humanity, however, shines through on occasion. She's particularly soft towards young girls, and is generous whenever she can afford to be. Leila does her best to avoid cursing (which is really, really saying something: she curses like a drunken, Tourettes-ridden sailor) around children and typically covers up her tattoos in their presence as well. Leila's a firm believer in "eye for an eye" justice and isn't one to compromise easily on moral issues. Similarly, she really, really doesn't like to admit she's wrong. While the pickpocket and drug runner may not be an ideal example of love and kindness, she's altruistic in her own way...sometimes. It's not that she's actively cruel or malicious, it's merely that she's learned opening up and trying to make things better just opens you up to getting burned. Hard. She's paid dearly for mistakes in the past and is determined to avoid repeating them. While bitter and easily irritated, she does have a good sense of professionalism, and for the money that Obsidian is giving her (and the food, oh Christ the FOOD) she's more than happy to get the job done, even if it means working with a bunch of jackoff, superhero wannabes. Leila? Psh. Leila could get this shit done without superpowers, understand? What, you doubt her? Bitch you best know who you're talking to-etc, etc, etc.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths first. Leila's cunning and brutally pragmatic. If she needs to kill someone, she won't bother giving them a fighting chance. She's good at sizing people up and coming up with good schemes. Leila's also physically quick, displaying considerable dexterity and also a remarkable ability to haul ass. I hate to say this, but she'd be good at parkour-she can run, jump, and climb like a monkey on meth. Leila's knowledgeable of the streets, common scams, and can see through bullshit very easily. Leila's not exactly Annie Oakley, but she's fired guns a few times before-her real weapon expertise shines with the switchblade she keeps tucked away on her person at all times. Lelia's very resourceful, and refuses to give up. She's learned how to survive on her own and fend for herself, and living a life like hers enables you to weather most of life's challenges. She's also a skilled criminal-she can pick locks, hotwire cars, pickpocket like a pro, and size up whether people are packing heat or not with ease. Leila's the person you want to go to if you need something less-than-totally-legal done. Her small size and experience make her adept at sneaking around.

Weaknesses? For starters, her lack of a formal education. She's clever and sharp, but if you ask her about history, chemistry, biology, so on and so forth, you're going to get an angry glare and probably a long string of curses. Her reading isn't the best, either-she's literate, but she takes her time. Leila's also proud and headstrong, a combination which has helped her throw down with the best and also get her ass kicked by the best. Playing to her pride is a pretty decent tactic. Leila's also been deprived of a solid home life and as a result is more vulnerable than she cares to admit to affection or being treated with basic respect. She's become bitter at the world that's wronged her and is desperately seeking a better life, an opportunity that presented itself with Obsidian. She can also alienate others ("FUCK ALL OF YOU!!!") occasionally (always) which usually comes back to bite her right in the ass when she needs allies the most. Hopefully, a stint with Obsidian will help with her team-building skills. Leila's also physically small and not very strong-she's got experience hauling ass away from the cops, but trying to fight is another matter entirely. If she has to fight, she'll rely on dirty tactics (shots to the groin and kidneys, scratching at your eyes, biting, etc) to compensate for her utter lack of physical strength. Any challenge that requires brute force, with no way to maneuver around it, will get the best of Leila. Also, she smokes, mostly because she figured somebody would do her in far before lung cancer would.

History:

Where to start? Her early years are a blur. Leila knows that she was born in Alaska, but from there it gets murky. Somehow, she wound up in the lower 48 in an orphanage for girls, unsure of what happened to her parents or how she became separated from them. She's not sure, but she thinks she was kidnapped. Leila's since lost hope in reconnecting with her parents-and very quickly grew tired of the orphanage. Around the age of twelve, she ran away, packing a small bag and getting out of the shithole that was by no means her home. Leila quickly found out that the real world is not forgiving on a twelve year old girl, and she was mercifully taken in by a man named Tyrelle. Tyrelle, while having benevolent intentions taking in Leila, was caught up with some rather nasty types. He did his best to keep Leila in school, give her a place to stay and so forth (her description of the orphanage was so horrible he couldn't bring himself to send her back, and was attempting to go about adopting her), but she gradually became more and more exposed to the criminal lifestyle he had. Eventually, as you may have guessed, this lifestyle came back to bite Tyrelle, fatally so. About two years after finding him, her surrogate father was gunned down in a gang conflict, at which point Leila...enacted revenge.

She's not sure how this happened. She truthfully isn't. She remembers standing at the crime scene, seeing the one decent person in her life in a pool of blood, bloated and stiff, and...and then things get murky. Leila's pretty sure she killed the men responsible, because looking in to the case years afterwards revealed they were dead, the killer never found. Leila has flashes of these memories-blood all over her hands, the killers' house...she can't recall anything more. Much like the first few years of her life, it would seem some part of her brain decided that it would do her no psychological good to keep those memories around. This, however, led Leila down a very, very bad path. Tyrelle's associates were able to take her under their wing out of respect for their friend, but they didn't attempt to shield her as he had. Leila quickly became a very profitable vassal, being next to invisible to the cops. Her desire to belong and prove herself made her an eager apprentice, and she was running drugs, picking pockets, and playing the lookout within weeks. As the years went on, Leila's acceptance into the gang became official, her body slowly inked with tattoos, her reputation slowly built up. Leila, while a nomad, never having a proper home to herself, had a family of sorts, and most nights had food to eat. There were people that paid attention to her, and she was caught up in what her surrogate father had attempted to prevent very quickly.

Years passed and Leila spent time in juvy, but more time out of it. She got damned good at what she did, albeit a bit worried as her years of juvy started running out. She turned eighteen and, surely enough, got picked up for possession of a felony amount of drugs-cocaine she was taking to the other side of town. Gone was the fourteen year old girl who could deter cops with a sweet smile-in her stead was a hard looking, tattooed woman that had run with the roughest types in LA. She was taken in, but (I'm assuming this is okay), she was contacted first-it would seem a group called Obsidian (I'm guessing they go through lists of prisoners for people with "nothing to lose") noticed her lack of a family, lack of a home, and lack of reliable income, and made one hell of an offer...she figured she'd be kissing a few years of her life away regardless, but Obsidian seemed to have better food than prison.

Other:

I saw someone else had shadow manipulation about 4/5ths of the way through this sheet. I'm going to go ahead and saw Leila's shadow is immune to this power if that's alright with everyone, as otherwise she'd be nerfed reaaaallllyyyy easily.
