Would anyone be interested in a sci-fi military rp where the roles would be either individual members of a fireteam as they try and accomplish their objectives in a snafu city/region wide setting(Black Hawk Down-ish) or each RPr gets his own fireteam or maybe even platoon and does basically the same thing. The former would most likely have far more character development and interaction while still focusing on tactics and resource management, while the latter would be a more strategic focus; it being a larger military scope obviously.

I'm very much open to ideas or suggestions, considering I'm not the most tactical-minded person, but if you have interested let me know.

Ok, so you have a two nations going at it in interplanetary, interstar system worlds. The nation we would be playing has attack this world along with a few others in an ongoing push towards the eradication of this other nation. This is predominantly a racial sort of war, perhaps even based on creed. This all stems from a series of wars dating back nearly two centuries by now(somebody attacks this one, pushes that nation toward the brink sets up terms of surrender that sets a peace for a few decades before the other attacks again; rinse and repeat).

Anyway, this particular operation on this planet is reaching a standstill. The enemy is becoming more partisan, more guerrilla, and far more diehard. They've started pushing back, even through all the orbital bombardment and all the large scale land war, the hold on. The attrition is starting to make the Operation not worth the effort, and the death toll is rising.

A pincer movement has shut off a a couple of battalions in a large city, and enemy troops are so close orbital measure would do more harm than good for our troops. And thats where our story starts. Again, I am open for ideas or suggestions , and all support is greatly appreciated!

Even more interesting.

Do you have the assets of each force designed, or would you like some help?
Do you have standard tactics for each force, or branch of military service defined, or are you leaving it up to players to figure out their SOPs?

Assests are as of yet undefined, and help would be great.

As long as the combined force of player characters makes sense to be together(nobody populates a whole division of sniper squads in a city) there is some leeway on what I have in mind. It'll be mostly infantry, which in itself is stocked with soldiers from the very start of this campaign to freshmeat that was shipped out a month ago to fill the quote on this attrition front. A random armor or survellance/espinioge unit has gotten stuck in the city while trying to pull back to intercept the pincer movement would also be good.

There is a FTL system in place. ODST style deployment is resource expensive and rather inefficient unless used in a sort of stormtrooper anti-terrorist way. Orbital bombardments with kinetic rods is pretty common, but its more of a matter of how much do you want to blow up to then go plant your flag on, eh? Railguns, chembased lasers, are all pretty standard but the old school firearms are cheap, efficient, and usually the easiest option to equip units with.

Also, this was primarily a bunker buster force, the divisions that were sent out to slug it out with hardened and entrenched targets while forces were gathered and maneuvers were made to better fight said targets. They can handle their own but require support on a larger level to be ultimately effective.

Hey Sep.

This could make a really good story almost any way it turns out. I like it. I wouldn't mind playing as part of a four to six man element, OR I wouldn't mind running a four to six man element/fireteam.

Plenty of space open for Padawans...

back on topic I'm quite looking forward to some nitty gritty infantry warfare.

You've certainly got my interest in your hands. I'm not much for interstellar sci-fi, but I do love me some near-future sci-fi. Less Kirk and Spock, more Minority Report and i-Robot, but if this one ends up akin to Halo or Ender's Game I'd want a slice of the action.

I think this is probably closer to Aliens or Avatar level tech than Halo.

That's cool too. The closer it is to current day, the more comfortable I feel about it. I like my sci-fi to be based in reality somewhat, y'know? Different enough to be interesting, but close enough to us to see the logic in it and fantasize that we could end up there one day.

Well, here's the thing. We have railguns and lasers available now. Granted they are mounted as shipboard weapons, or in some cases on the back of large trucks, but they exist now. The next generation of United States Navy vessels seem to have the zipper problem for railguns solved and are to be utilized as less prototypical or experimental weapons and considered part of that ship's standard compliment. Particle weapons are simply high power particle accelerators that have been miniaturized. Most of what we lack currently is efficient and portable power supplies and iin some cases efficient heat management.

In another fifty to one hundred years, these weapons are probably going to be available and used on the battlefield at the infantryman level. For a setting like this, I don't think that having these weapons available would be far-fetched or "too sci-fi" at all. As our GM said, not every unit will have every member having one or the other. Ballistic slug-throwers are just fine, cheap, and they work. I might use a railgun, particle beam/cannon, or laser in the unit as a force multiplier, like a SAW or a crew-served .50 cal, or like a Mk-19 grenade launcher. Again, not everybody would be able to do that.

The more I think about it though, Halo is a good comparison. Another good one might well be Starship Troopers, without the Bugs.

That is what I was intending in a nutshell. You could be in the most advanced tech battle there is but most of the time war comes down to simple economics; if its cheap and effective that's what goes. OOC is being built right now. As of now I'm going to have a severely scattered and de-fanged armor unit stranded in the city with the rest of the infantry units. As a rule of thumb the units that were either pushed back in to the city or went chasing after the pincer by taking a shortcut through the city will have broken chain-of-commands. Lots of field promotions basically. Suggestions are appreciated!
