I've actually wanted to develop this idea for a while, but I still have a little more brainstorming that needs to be done to get it to work. For those of you who have watched/played Ao Oni or HetaOni, this is going to be a bit like that. Probably a bit more like HetaOni, actually, but with my own spin on the idea.
First off: Despite the fact that this is largely based off of these two series, this is not quite the same thing. Therefore, if you are looking to play a canon character from either one, I'm afraid that you will probably be disappointed. Sorry, but I don't want any confusion about that later. Also, you do not have to know either series to play. All you need to know is that this is a basic haunted house set up, and you will be provided with the information necessary to get through. How your character uses that information, however, is up to you.
Anyway, here's what I have so far. Any comments, suggestions on how to improve this, missing information that you feel would be useful, or even general interest is welcome to be expressed below. Especially if you feel that there are important details missing, because I admit that I am nowhere near perfect at remembering all the things that should be explained in a story. This is partly practice to fix that.
Enough rambling for now, time for the fun stuff.
Hey, did you know?
About an hour outside of town, in the woods...
There's an old house there...
...I wonder why it's been left alone all this time...
Nobody at the school in the town of Evergreen really remembers who started the rumor, but nobody really paid any attention to it.
Except for a small group of teenagers. They may not have all known each other well, but whether they were best friends, transfer students, or previously had no knowledge of each other's existence, they all had one thing in common:
One day, they all decided to go see the house together.
Everyone had different motives, of course. Some were probably dared, some probably wanted to impress somebody, some probably had a natural curiosity for the unknown or a project that they felt they could use the location for. Some were probably just bored and looking for an excuse to hang out with others. Whatever their reason, they all eventually ended up there, only to find the house not quite as devoid of life as they had previously been told.
...Actually, isn't this strange boy one of the transfer students? What is he doing here?
So, the objective of this game is to get back out of the house safely, just as in almost every other story about unfortunate kids in a haunted house. There will be various challenges that the kids will have to go through, including (but probably not limited to):
Brainteasers of varying levels (I will be coming up with these myself, so don't worry, they shouldn't be too hard)
Fights and flights
General sneaking and distraction
and exploration of various rooms in a house that seems strangely larger on the inside.
Of course, the entire time, the kids have to keep to becoming victims of the other...things...that reside in the house. So basically, solve the mysteries and avoid the monsters. Simple enough, right?
I myself will be performing two specific roles: One will be to provide the player with enough information to navigate the house and find the necessary clues (while hopefully providing a fair chance for all characters to survive). The second will be to play through the game as a supporting character whose main role is to possibly provide the characters with more necessary information. Basically, my goal is to guide players through the game using any IC-based means possible, though I may have to post some information in the OOC for reference purposes at times to keep everyone on track (myself included).
That being said, I can only do so much for guidance. How this goes largely depends on what the characters and players decide to do with the information. I do want to avoid character deaths if possible, but I can't save characters who repeatedly make ridiculous mistakes. They must at least try to survive.
The characters will be highschool-ish aged persons, so roughly ages 14-19. If I get some really good suggestions about how to make it work, I could allow each character to have some sort of power, but I have not yet worked out how to keep that regulated, so supernatural elements will be mostly run by the house unless I can come up with some good ideas for that. I will make an update here if I can figure something out.
(However, I don't mind seeing a slightly psychic character or two, but I would need the people who want to play those characters to contact me first, as they would need some extra information and I can't have too many of them)
I'll get some basic reference pictures up here when I get the chance, but basically, this is a really big mansion, even larger on the inside than the outside, There are a lot of rooms for various things, such as a ballroom, a parlour, a kitchen, several bedrooms, a large basement area, an attic, and so on. I will post the exact rooms to be found in an OOC, as well as which ones have been discovered as the story continues.
There are monsters in here. They take various forms, but I will warn you: At least one has clown-like elements to it. Not like the stereotypical scary murderer clown or anything, so don't worry about that (Besides, those are too creepy even for me to use. *shudder*). I tend to work more with jester or pierrot-style "clowns", anyhow, simply because I feel like I can do more with them comfortably. But anyway, the "clowns" will probably be closer in style to the imps from the first few chapters of the Homestuck series or the ones from Madoka, if I need something big for any reason. If need be, though, I can probably eliminate them altogether, since the only clown-like 'monster' absolutely necessary will be a certain jester figure who will become relevant later. (Think Paper Mario's Dimentio, roughly.)
The rest of the monsters will take on different forms, some of them being based on the fears of a certain character. Characters will be attacked by them at certain intervals, but there will always be a possibility to defeat them or escape them. Pay attention to the descriptions or be prepared to think outside the box.
This house is clearly affected by supernatural powers. Along with the ghosts and monsters, there will be some distortions of space and time, though nothing too confusing since I have to keep track of it all. There will be unexplainable things happening all around the characters, and common sense may be more useful than scientific theory in many cases. Also, don't try to just break everything. There is no 'just breaking out' of the house, even through the windows. Certain doors and walls within the house may be broken, but be careful about that, as it may just cause more problems. If you destroy a door or a wall thoughtlessly, for example, and that turns out to be the only place available to hide in during a later monster attack, for example, it's going to be difficult to help your character out of there.
There is a safe zone somewhere in the house, so characters do not always have to worry about staying alert. The safe zone is not the goal, though. Escaping is the goal. The safe zone is merely an extra helpful resource.
The house has a history that will be revealed throughout the story. Finding out what happened here will be useful to characters as they try to escape. Why exactly is this called The Fun House, anyway?
Appearance: (Drawing in process)
Almost shoulder-length auburn hair, dark brown eyes, slightly short for the average 16-year-old boy
Name: Kido Järvinen Vanhanen
Age: 16
The cheerful, if somewhat odd, person found inside the house upon arrival. He might be a transfer student to the school, actually, but does anyone even know this kid? He said that he was curious about this house and arrived ahead of the others.
(More to come as I can find it.)
So, anything else? I'll gladly take suggestions, including what RP section this should be in (Free to Casual, probably. I'm scared of the Advanced section).
