So, I've seen a few Naruto RPs around here and being from the original community who created them way back when on the Old Guild, I'm somewhat dissatisfied. I'm considering making one, but I don't have many ideas and I don't even know if anyone would be interested in one to begin with.

So my question is this, what would be your ideal naruto RP?

Type of plot/plot ideas,

Time period, state of the world.

How much freedom with player worldbuilding (clans, kekkei genkai, weapons, and lore in general) as well as character freedom/power (Just genin, or the whole nine yards from genin to kage/sannin level).

Would you want the world to include political intrigue at all, or just keep wars about epic battles, and the general plot about plotting against and with one another (if that at all).

I hope this isn't fruitless, but at the very least I thought I'd try. Tell your friends! :)

No clue on plot, but I think it'd be good to have unrest slowly grow.

... Well, good story-wise. Not so much for the world's inhabitants.

As for characters, there's obviously not going to be eight people from the same clan running around. Rank-wise, most of the characters(if not all) will probably end up being between Genin and Jounin.

This would a be a fairly interesting game, but the problem is that Naruto isn't the most consistent setting around. To avoid tying up in Canon knots, might I suggest running around during the year that the Fourth Hokage ruled? Orochimaru just left, Jiraiya is intermittently in the village, Tsunade is in exile, many of the characters either aren't born yet, or are genin right now.

You know that actually sounds pretty fun year. Being like the Rookie 9 genin of that ere, allows for the jounin/sensei characters of Naruto's era to appear as chunins and still learning themselves, also this year is kind of a blank slate, cause many of the active jounin or chunin would be dying at the end of the year. The RP depending on length, could simply end when the Kyuubi attacks, or time skip 10 years to us all being jounin, and then taking genin teams of the canon characters.

Just thinking out loud, but I'd definitely be interested in a Naruto game forming

Hmm granted it could really take place in any time period considering we could just make it AU(Alternate Universe) wherein the majority of the characters from the manga wouldn't exist. Especially since I'm not so much a fan of people playing as the characters from the manga, not to mention those are copywrited and it'd be...troublesome.

Nonetheless, we could have it set during the time period that the fourth hokage lived, but it would not be the actual fourth hokage.

Also, hi/welcome FVGT, FireBringer, and Loki.

Oh look, it's Riddle, what a surprise :P

FVGT, what I meant is how many and to what extent should clans be allowed to be created (if at all). Kekkei genkai and Hiden go along with that statement really. As to rank, I mean should people be allowed to start as jounin, or should they have to start as genin or chuunin.

At the moment I think starting at Chuunin for the majority would be good and then people could audition (submit a CS) for kage and I'd pick the best suited/qualified one. Perhaps anyone wanting a jounin would also have to have a chuunin, that way we keep a solid balance between the two.

In terms of naruto time periods/eras we don't have any set timeline (years that things transpired and how long they lasted), but generally it goes as follows;

>Time of the Sage/Rikkudo Senin(Birth of chakra and ninjutsu)
>Intermediary period(people learn the things from the sage and such)
>Brief peace
>Warring clans era
>Villages slowly form
>First Ninja War
>Peace
>Second Ninja War
>Peace till present time at the start of Naruto
So yeah there's that.

So what about political intrigue, war, inter-village interactions etc etc?

Do you even want the RP to start with more than one village open. I'd say allowing 1 or 2 at the start is plenty considering it'd otherwise be even harder to even vaguely fill the roster and have a solid plot.

What kind of plot we want? I'm sure either ya'll or myself can twist any cliches into something neat or try something new.

Cliches being, evil organizations, the bijuu turning against people(might be neat), war between the villages, a single man who is the threat that people must unify against.

Thoughts?

Also, do you guys like it if/when I give suggestions for you to choose from or? Last thing, um, in terms of plot I tend to GM things a bit more like a sandbox where there is a plot you'll be roped into somewhat, but your characters actions will have real benefits and/or consequences.

I lied about that being the last thing, forgive my longwindedness and as my mind keeps coming up with more things to address haha. How much influence of the plot would you as players like to have? Do you want to be able to submit/create and execute your own arcs/plot lines (subplots for your characters may or may not fit in here depending on how vastly said subplot(s) would effect whatever main arc/plot is going on at the time)?

Also I'd appreciate it greatly if you'd mention this humble little interest check to anyone you know who might be interested in helping create/be in a naruto RP. I am both looking to make a solid community and a solid RP and the more the merrier ^_^

So, the only question I particularly can think of an answer for is that the Players should be able to influence the plot to a decent extent, cause ripples, destroy relationships, etc. However, if there is a big bad, they shouldn't be able to influence that much outside of maybe making it more difficult for them without realizing it, or making it easier for them without realizing it.

I'm interested as well. You gonna teach me how to fight, Yoshu-nii?

The peace before the second ninja war would be fun but let me tell you about my character <sarcasm>

He's a loner driven by vengeance to kill his brother for killing his clan, which was super powerful and awesome, but his brother was totally justified. Our clan has a bloodline that allows us to copy any jutsu, and it's higher levels are creepy. Oh and like every female in the village has a crush on this guy, cause he's so awesome despite doing nothing.

The fact that I can't describe Sasuke Uchiha and not make it sound like a really bad mary sue shows how much I like the existing canon characters. The world itself is interesting, but the canon characters themselves are so far over the top that it's just impossible to make them reasonable or balanced for RP purposes.

Part of me wants to suggest that we start back as early as possible and we make it sort of a multi-generational game, as a result we found the villages and the world is of our own making so that when we have an S-Class organization coming up against us, we know it's our fault in some way and not just a macguffin to extend the manga 200 chapters.

In terms of starting out maybe we start as jounin, then create our team of ninjas who are our students. We train them and RP and eventually we timeskip and take the role of one of our students, repeat until we reach "modern day" I imagine we'd create a very interesting world as our characters would literally make the 5 hidden villages, and set up the daimyo/hokage system

Glitch caused a double post, my apologies.

Researching possible character sheets we could use though.

I think this would be all that would be needed to define a character that could exist in the Naruto universe. Regardless of the type of game or era in the Naruto Universe, we'd need something like this. Whether it's Clan political organization, Theater scale war plans, or all on a Genin team together, at a minimum these seem to be the stats the GM would have to know.

For me, the plot could be anything from something very complex and multi-layered or very basic and simple. However, I would say that stats used for the character sheets shouldn't be implemented. It just takes a big of the fun from the fights characters would get into. It also limits people on how high they can go, should they want to do so, that is.

Actually i recommend a point buy system thatwould allow a prodigy unlike a lot of the old guilds where everyone was kind of just lame is the right word to put here.

Point systems are silly and restricting.
If it's GM'd properly - the "godmodded prodigy" characters won't be accepted.

As mentioned above, point systems are stupid and silly. They have no use but to restrict our creativity and quite frankly, they make no sense in non table-top rp.

I disagree with the table-top RP point. I do agree that, if done wrong, they can definitely restrict creativity. (I hate stats. I don't like keeping track of them)

@Celaira: Yes I'm going to teach you, perhaps with the help of several others...for reasons. As to the base ability of characters being capable of effecting the plots, yes they'll at the very least be able to do that so no worries :)

(Second post response thingy): Also good things to note. If executed properly, no one has to feel restricted though. Nonetheless, we trudge on! I'll likely leave it to a vote of those who want a stat system and those who don't. As well as my common opinion. I might make one for funsies anyways so that we can see what we might have, even if we don't use it :P

@FireBringer: I actually really like that idea in terms of plot and method for the RP. Not sure if they'd start as jounin, though that might be best. Nonetheless starting as early as we can (probably a bit before the warring clans era) would be pretty cool. We'd go from just a naruto RP, to a truly different world that has the same basic framework, but some really new aspects to it. Any original clans or lore (weapons, villages etc etc) would fit into the world and wouldn't just feel...tacked on haha. I think this may work, but for the moment let's keep the floor open. Plus, this gives us an overarching concept, but not quite an actual plot for the individual generations. Still it would be really frickin' cool to see development like that. It would be both like building a world's history and indepth/long term character development. Plus we'd get to see how the actions of our characters echo throughout history rather than just in individual plot lines, which I at least think is really awesome. Anyone else?

In terms of a stat system, if we do one it will not be like most stat systems, which merely restrict people's creativity (as I do agree on this point), but will rather supply us with an easy method of comparing people's abilities. It might help if we know how fast, or strong, or durable people are in comparison to one another, in addition to how much chakra one person has in comparison to another. I had considered adapting a stat system I saw used in a certain bleach RP (Lost and Riddle, you know which one) that I was in to Naruto. Might help, it could even be optional and I'd be quite willing to help people do their stats or do it for them if they didn't want to do any of the annoying math (very simple math mind you, of which there is not a lot of). Anywho, moving on :)

Thank you for finding a character sheet, I will take some of its areas into consideration, though I have one in mind. Honestly, I don't mind what you put in your character sheet or how it looks as long as it has all the required information in it, which I will for sure write up at some point.

@Altered Tundra: I have actually seen situations where stats are not all that bad, mind you very few situations and in them the stat systems were custom built so that they weren't so invasive, but nonetheless I have addressed this in my response to FireBringer so yeah haha.

@Shadolord: Hmm, yeah I know that if I miss any "OP" characters then Celaira will smack the back of my head to tell me there is something wrong. She's good at that, and I tend not to miss things anyways so this shouldn't be much of a problem ^_^

@Riddle: I suppose I already answered both these points now...oops. Well...um, hi Riddle xD

@Lost in My Mind: MAKE A POINT DAMMIT!
Below are points that have yet to be addressed at all, no rush, I'm just making sure no one forgets ^_^

So I suppose that I may as well start with the questions that were posed by our gracious host Yosh.

The exact type of plot rarely matters to me to be honest, so long as it isn't completely lame, which I highly doubt you would create Mr. Host sir. So yeah, have at when it comes to that.

For the time period I am rather fond of the idea put forth by The Docto...er i mean Firebringer. It would be really interesting, and quite fun, to do a multi-generaltional RP starting before the founding of the villages. Not only would we be in completely unmarked turf, but we also would have complete control of the future of the elemental nations which is kind of awesome.

I personally enjoy having the freedom to create a clan/kekkei genkai. Being able to create weapons/lore isn't as important to me, but as long as it is moderated I see no reason why you can't give that freedom.

For the power of the characters, as in Genin-Sannin level, I think that if we go with Fire's idea that the players should have the choice to start off stronger than Genin especially if we end up making entire squads of course.

I personally love the idea of having political intrigue involved in the roleplay. Again this would tie in nicely with Fire's idea.

I like the CS that was presented by Fire, and I believe that just about covers everything that is needed. There is my input. Oh Wait! Have to cover my opinion on the whole stat thingy.

While I personally dislike stat's quite a bit I do understand how they can be used as a good reference tool, regardless of the type of RP.

To those bad mouthing the stat system because godmod prodigy.

Actually the reason i mention this is all the Naruto RPs i see are oh everyone is basically the same. In all actuality there are people who are prodigies in different things but not great in others they are called savants. Having someone who is a prodigy of Chakra control but lacking in physical strength or endurance really isn't godmodded and actually is a real thing.

On to points that were not addressed
Having inter-village conflict can make for good red herrings or plot hooks.
We should all be shinobi for 1 of 2 villages to make it easier for filling a roster.
Hidden 10 yrs ago Post by FireBringer

The character sheet was merely a suggestion to at least have some frame of reference. If in a best case scenario it is a multi-generational game, we may need them since each of us could have dozens of character, it also allows a tier of things to allow for "rank progression.

However in tabletop games I loathe rules, but they are invaluable to allow for management of multiple characters which well... there is not an insignificant chance of that possibility occuring.

Regarding your questions:

As a launching point I think it might be best to start in One village, and then if we move out or what not then we expand.

In regards to influence on the plot, I would prefer a more sandbox approach, as it allows for more wide variety and other plot cropping up eventually.
