To be fair, the fantasy genre was single-handedly kickstarted by the Lord of the Rings. Like for example, elves before the Lord of the Rings were the fair folk sort; strange beings who live in forests and the like. That was what the Elves were like in the Hobbit. As for the popular Tolkien-style elves.... I can actually go into a rant about that.
