Sorry for the back-to-back post of evil, but happy birthday you people. You get a post.
I've been neglecting speaking about Earth too much, and what little I've shown is in Europe, the Pre-War District, the current District and the Middle East. And only the last one had anything mentioned about conditions. So I'll say this: Hurricanes aren't named because there are too many and coastal cities all have dikes around them. The summers in areas not protected by insanely expensive weather control installations (Most places sparsely populated right now) are more or less hell on Earth, with temperatures reaching so high that without cooling suits like those used in spacesuits any unmodified human would die in a matter of hours. Winter is usually pretty tolerable (though with a lot of rain), provided you aren't somewhere where it dips below freezing. If you are? That rain is snow/hail/sleet, and there's a frightening amount of it. Countless species are extinct, and drug-resistant diseases ravage any area without easy access to medical nanobots. Africa is still mostly third world countries (By future standards, obviously), which-to the horror of the other members of the Federation-uses extremely little clean industry and energy. In other words: Earth is a shithole and is only becoming more of a shithole. And nobody cares as long as they're protected by weather control stations.
So, you see, I can conveniently write scenes on Earth with normal weather, but also drop some ridiculously annoying anvils about climate change if I want to. Why did I write all that? I have no fucking clue.
