Alright folks, here we are and here it is -- the first ever bank of submissions for RPGC, and what a batch it is! There's a lot of reading here, so I'll keep the meta stuff as short as I can -- before posting all your stories, songs, and poems, I first wanted to remind you of a few voting guidelines (you can see the official stuff here).

First -- the most important part of a contest is writing, and you've sort of blown me away by how well you've done that part! Great work so far. Now comes the close-second-most-important part -- reading and review! It is less exciting and it's a lot of work, but seriously now, every single word you give here is solid gold to the authors who have contributed a piece. The contest crew is going to be working for quite a while I think, preparing some reviews for everybody who entered. But we need your help -- we're only so many people, and a lot of my folks have work of their own popping up. So whether you're a contestant, or just a passer-by reading the contest, you can do the whole guild (and maybe the next Hemmingway) a huge favor by pitching in and leaving some thoughts to help some writers grow. Please help if you can!

Now to keep things tidy, and because I'm hoping to have just pages and pages of discussion, we're going to break this up into two threads. This here is the conversation thread. In this thread only, your response is absolutely anything you want to talk about, relating to this contest. There are a few things to bear in mind of course -- be helpful, try to be positive, use your powers for good. Try to help as many people as you can!! Your reading/reviewing patterns are entirely up to you, but we absolutely love reviews here. Do what you can.

(in the future after some strenuous coding work by Mahz, we can do this via tabs -- and we're exploring other ways to break things down in the meantime -- for now, it's only an extra click or two, so we'll be fine)

Alright, that's plenty of meta. Let's get right to the jam. Here are your entries for RPGC #1 - Inspired by a Song

don't forget to cast your vote here!

this contest has concluded

HANG ON WE'RE NOT DONE YET! Because of character-count limitations, I need one more post to finish out all the entries, DON'T MISS THE LAST FEW!! THEY'RE GOOD!

This concludes the (eligible!) entries for RPGC #1's popular vote. I should note that, in addition to all this, we've also received a few additional entries -- one of which you won't see here, as it's being submitted to an unspecified external contest (aka publishing!). I have two more that I *can* share, and if any more stories trickle in, I wouldn't mind adding them here at the end so that more folks can read them at their leisure. These are not eligible for the popular vote, for various reasons, but you can still enjoy them as we have.

Oh dear. I was going to review every one of these, but... I don't even think I have time to read all of them today.
Maybe after I finish my English paper.

MY POST WILL BE UPDATED AS I FIND TIME, SO PLEASE KEEP CHECKING BACK AT IT.
This is my first time ever really writing formal critiques for people, and I'm likely to do a sucky job of it. Fair warning, everyone.
For lack of a better concise rating system, I turn to the six-trait rubric that I use in English class. My apologies, but... It actually seems quite useful. See below for an explanation of my thought process.
Ideas: Themes and the like. Supporting details. Did they paint a picture in my mind?
Organization: Did your story flow well? it's less concrete here than it is in English class, obviously, but, the main question is: Were the ideas enhanced or inhibited by the organization of the story?
Voice: Was the narration of your story consistent? Did it seem realistic, or like a robot talking in monotone?
Word Choice: How did your words enhance the story? Did they help to paint a picture in my head?
Sentence Fluency: Self-explanatory. Did your story or poem flow well?
Conventions: This one is a biggie. I find grammatical errors, when not used for effect, to absolutely irritate me.
Overall:

All of them are pretty great, each with a different flow and style about them, and each one invokes different feelings; I'm glad my entry made it, and I hope people enjoy it! I didn't think it was that good! Seriously though, there are some really talented poets and authors here. Best of luck to everyone! I'm really impressed with this contest.

I'm pretty stunned. I mean I don't know what my expectations were exactly, but you guys seriously blew them away. And as a bonus I have a playlist for my next several days of RPG all lined up.

(Here's a quick little review for Cops and Robbers, I know i'm not the best at this so i apologize in advance)

okay-wow. just wow! this was very well written, and although I feel like it was a darker type of story the frenzied, frantic pace of the song was very fitting. I certainly was not expecting the ending at all, and the way you omitted the major details left a certain sense of mystery which I really liked. I don't know how to explain it, but there's something both hopeful yet hopeless about this piece. it's like-people rebelling will be caught/killed eventually, but they'll still fight on because if not them, then who else? kind of reminds me of things like the alamo. anyway, overall great job and I really loved it!

That's uh

Well that's a lot of entries. I am going to try to review them all, but it might take me a couple weeks, what with how busy I am these days. I don't know when the voting ends, but hopefully I'll get to that at some point too.

Of course, I haven't even opened the spoilers yet, so. I know a couple are pretty long, but depending on the majority I may be able to get cracking quicker.

All I can say for sure about the end of the voting period is, it's gonna be pushed back later than we initially planned. Because I mean that is a lot of quality work right there, and there's no way I'm short-changing it by quick deadlines. Still -- people should start reading ASAP, because the sooner we do all this justice, the sooner we can fire up RPGC #2.

So, hm. Should I listen to the songs first or read the entries first? XD

I try to listen to the songs while reading, and if I find the music too distracting, I just listen to the music first. But thats just me, who knows what'll work for others

... Reading the entry first and listening to the song after seems to work for me, 'cause I notice that at least these ones would spoil the events of the entry. XD

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that I am not the best at reviewing, but I have enjoyed the stories I have read. Here's some thoughts on the ones so far.

Homestruck:

Very well written. I loved the words you chose and the video of you singing them was a nice touch.

Still Waiting:
Hit me in the feels! I could feel the emotions.

Go West:
Wow, so wow. I think this was beautiful. I love the song you chose for this. It put a smile on my face.

It Watches:
Lovely poem.

Perfect Day:
Wow, so powerful.

Sky Full of Stars:
Cute story, but also sad because of where her father is and what might happen to him.

Smoke and Mirrors:
This probably hits home to a lot of people. I know it does for me.

Rather Be:
I loved this. I liked how the lyrics in the song and some of the words in the story were the same or similar. While listening to the song and reading at the same time, I would read the words and hear them at the same time, that was neat.

Novocain:
Nice poem, very powerful words.

Cops and Robbers:
Very well written! I loved the details.

I will try and make comments for more later

Just read the first few works and I am already blown away by the talent and creativity that all of you possess. Seriously, everything so far has been thrill to read. I can't wait to sit down and finish up the rest.

EDIT: I would also like to get some reviews up, if I can. But I usually like everything I encounter anyway. >_<

Disclaimer: I am an idiot. Its pretty hard for me to tell if I go too far when giving a negative opinion on something, and I apologize in advance for anything that is too harsh or insulting. Also, I tend to focus more on the story that is told rather than how it is told. Also also, I may end up not giving reviews for some stories, but thats purely because I cannot give a decent review for it. Not your fault, don't worry, I just don't trust myself to give it a fair opinion.

Still Waiting: This was a pleasantly lovely story, surprisingly serene and peaceful despite the flowing emotions everywhere. A beautiful story of hope, happiness and love, but also loneliness and cruelty of fate. My only complaints were that the feelings displayed were a little on the weak side, although still an amazing story with it as that. I don't know how it would end up if they were portrayed more strongly, as well as whether it would be for better or for worse. The ending was rather abrupt, as well. In my opinion, and only my opinion, the ending was cheap and just a clean cut rather than a graceful gradual ending. Although it does heavily signify just how tragically it struck her, which is also a great effect. I still would have preferred to see even a glimpse more, her reactions, the results of her mixing emotions.

It Watches: I never was one to understand poetry. This is just a disclaimer to anything I may say that would offend the author, of which I apologize for any future needless harshness; just know that I'm an idiot. I feel that this story has a nice vibe to it, there is a truth that rings from it, but nothing conclusive, in my opinion, can be found. To me, it feels like there's almost no point to it, albeit to raise awareness of an unforeseeable enemy. As for complaints, I felt it was too vague overall. What were the people succumbing to? What is this Bad Thing? Maybe this is the point of poetry, I'm not too sure, honestly. I'm just an idiot. (sorry...)

Perfect Day: This story seems to emanate sort of bleak dullness, a nice way to address the spiraling downfall of a man's resolve when addiction spirits them away. The delivery and the feeling of regret and desperation were quite nice from it, but I can't say I liked it. It did its job well, I just didn't like it (In a totally nice way, I swear). I don't even think I have many complaints for it, and any I could find about the story itself is probably null and void, I don't know what its like to lose someone to addiction therefore I have no real right to nitpick about it. Great job overall.

No Place I'd Rather Be: I like this. I really like this. There's so much carefree happiness, despite the hardships that would lie ahead for them. I love how light it all feels as well. Although I'm not usually one for light feeling stories and tales, an occasional one or two is a nice experience from all the heaviness from everything else. The positivity in it is lovely. No complaints.
