I think it would be better if you said he applied his brute force to his understanding of a monster, rather than choosing between the two like they were opposing traits, because really they're not. You can just as easily rely on your brute force to take a monster down without going in blindly, you can basically use your knowledge of a monster to know the best time to strike, and at that moment, pour all of your power into the attack.
