I was thinking of having a Ratmen civilization that was above ground, but also has underground tunnels. They sound pretty cool to me, really.Thank you. But we all know that something without stimulation ends up in stagnation. The Technocracy cannot be alone all the time. So, if @The Patriarch is willing, we can have a counterpart civilization to contest and rival the Technocracy, maybe an underground Ratman city-state called Shoden or something. Both sides hate each other beyond unpardonable levels, and the warzones of tunnels and caverns keep the Technocrat Military in tip-top shape, and also keep the Ratman population to relatively manageable levels for both sides. Ancient relics of power hum and whisper from the depths of Shoden, artifacts which the knowledge-loving Technocracy wants to take, study and exploit. The Ratmen know of a future beyond the dark and the cramped and desire a way towards the surface. But they no longer fight for these reasons alone. Trespasses against the other since first contact have piled up into a mountain of hate. At this point, they kill simply because they can. In addition, both sides have to contend with troglodytes, trolls and the occasional angry spirit or some other magical being locked up underground since the dawn of creation. Yeah, this is coming together pretty nicely.
