A SINGLE GALAXY

Most science fiction and space based factional RP’s have a single thing in common: they nominally start the game at the very apex of the space age. Colonies are abundant, technology is frighteningly advanced and the various races of the galaxy are often friends or enemies of one another. I want to turn the clocks back. I want to start a Sci-Fi Nation RP that begins just as your nation discovers its own version of Faster-Than-Light travel and begins to inch out of its own solar system.

I want the uncertainty of what lies on the other side of the void. I want those initial, unsure diplomatic relations between a new race. I want that proverbial Cold War where neither side still understands each other and war might break out over something as erroneous as the identification of a freighter as a military vessel. I want a single galaxy that if you want to control or influence, you’ll have to fight for it. Let's embark on a mission that involves tiny first steps where our player nations learn to understand (or conquer) their new neighbors and foster a relationship instead of preordaining one right off the bat.

Important mechanics would be Species, and it's strengths and weaknesses that govern where and how they thrive. Trade will be important as you create FTL spacelanes and fight to control them, Diplomacy as you interact with newly discovered species and possibly form important political alliances/unions, and Empire, which would deal with the inner workings of your civilizations (Rich vs Poor, Anarchism vs Liberationism, et cetera). Thoughts. Opinions. Critiques!

I also have some awesome cosmographical maps to use as well. I'm going to test the waters before I put any mechanics up.

I like the idea. I've had a nation in mind for a good while now, and although it is a bit advanced for this, I can easily remove couple of their fancy toys... I've never used them before either (I admit, I am a beginner with strategy RPs, don't hit me!), so accidental tapping to power reserves beyond reason should not happen.

Haha. I'll be the hand of fate, as it were. This RP is more about nations learning who they are and what strategies work and don't. Instead of a game where everybody has all the pieces already on the board, I want a game where nobody knows quite where anybody stands.

For example, although I will have maps made up. You will not necessarily know where anybody else is on the map until you find them. Hahahaha.

Interested! Will we be writing from our leader's perspective during the roleplay?

Well it really depends on the mechanics. I could design it so you could only RP within the realm of your political party, so if you lost an election or were ousted from power you'd have to get it back to make big maneuvers, or you're just the leader -- whoever that might be.

One major mechanic will be:

EMPIRE: While you may have humble beginnings, the academia and learned minds of your civilization have long deduced not only the possibility of extraterrestrial life, but rather the inevitability of it. As we grow, mature and expand, we will encounter new alien species. Allowing them to assimilate and join your culture, or keep them at arms length is an immensely important decision for our administration. Refusal to incorporate could alienate us from a potentially galactic community, extending to them the same rights as our own may dilute our own culture.

Alright. I think we have enough interest.

Will these be adequate for the TEMPLATES for basic civilizations? I'll have additional traits within these categories. Reptilian, Mammalian, Aquatic, Mechanoid. Any I missed?

Definitely forgot Insectoid.

The class Aves (commonly called avians) are iffy. The reason I say that is because avians are one of the few biological classes of animals that has definitively shown a genetic predisposition to favor smaller bodies.

Insects, it has shown are able to grow as large as the amount of oxygen they can successfully filter to their organs. Ichthyology has shown that evolution favors size based on principle and demand. Avians seem to fill a niche specifically designed for smaller creatures. The same can be said of the order Rodentia.

Would you guys prefer a POINT BASED TRAIT system or a CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM where you pick a category that has assigned functions.

Like

Mammalia
- Rodentia (Population Bonus)
- Primates (Versatility Bonus)
- Carnivora (Military Bonus)

et cetera, et cetera!

The classification system would seem a bit restrictive, point based would probably give much more versatility. Not to mention that applying earth life based classification on alien life seems a bit weird. Unless they have a distant terragen ancestry of course, in which case it would be quite interesting.

A points based system would be preferable, yes.
