"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space." --Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Here's the CS for you to use!

I also made a faction skeleton for those of you who want to go freelance!

Search For The Multiverse is a semi-serious crossover RP based around three massive factions (plus a lot of smaller ones) competing against one another to control the multiverse.

I'll play the part of the world around you and a number of NPCs. If you so choose, you can play as both a major player character and any NPCs you want. For the most part, I won't push a storyline, but the RP does have a major objective. The story is driven by you!

The Background

The multiverse. Composed of an infinite amount of infinitely-large spaces known as 'universes', even the logically impossible is within the realm of reason. Stacked like tins of sardines, the barrier between each universe and its neighbor was thin as gossamer but stronger than any material known to man. For billions of years, contact between universes was strictly theoretical-- that is, until the multiverse rather suddenly opened itself up. This event is known as The Unveiling.

The Players

Three major factions formed in the aftermath of The Unveiling, each based entirely around how they choose to interact with the multiverse. You can feel free to make your own!

The Dunkelzahn Institute

An organization centered largely around peaceful observation and manipulation, agents of the Dunkelzahn Institute spend most of their time in primitive societies, happily guiding them to a better future. Once they have developed the necessary culture and technology to survive in the wild blue yonder of the greater Multiverse. Once this point is reached, the Institute reveals itself to them, and warmly welcomes them into their extensive empire.

Agents of the Institute are notorious for their exceptional adaptability.

The Sentient Milieu

Unlike the Institute, the Sentient Milieu has no qualms about revealing themselves to other universes. Instead, the Sentient Milieu firmly believes that the path to true happiness lies in taking and propagating any useful resources and technologies as soon as they're found. The Milieu will gladly share what they've found-- for the right price.

Agents of the Sentient Milieu are notorious for their nigh-on inexhaustible resources.

The Order of Imacculate Reality

A bizarre cross between The Institute's protectiveness and The Milieu's refusal to hide themselves, The Order is dedicated to ensuring the sanctity of each universe's narrative. It is well known to all multiversal travelers that other universes are clearly represented through works of "fiction". The Order believes that what is depicted in these works is what every universe it depicts should be. To The Order, 'canon' is the ultimate state of being, and anything that deviates from it (be they outside forces or the effects alternate realities) must be carefully excised. The Order is both the most militant and the most helpful of all factions, and happily consider themselves to be the custodians of all causality.

Agents of The Order are notorious for their extensive knowledge of the universe they are working in.

The Plot

The ultimate goal of all these factions is to find and reach the single most valuable treasure in the multiverse: The Set Of All Sets.

In an infinitely long procession of random variables, anything is possible. A universe comprised entirely of hydrogen is astronomically unlikely, but in the Set Of All Sets, it is practically guaranteed. The Set Of All Sets is the commonly-accepted name amongst multiversal travelers for a theoretical cluster of universes, each one made entirely out of a single object. Hydrogen, Gold, Ununpentium, Water, Steel, Promethium, even abstract concepts could be found in literally infinite amounts, waiting to be harvested. Control over even one of these universes would afford the faction controlling it unlimited power, and control over all of them would be greater still. Perhaps there's something even more valuable at the center of the Set Of All Sets... perhaps it's the center of the multiverse, the key to controlling all reality.

Despite clear evidence to the existence of the Set Of All Sets, no one has ever managed to breach the intense barrier protecting it. It appears that the Set Of All Sets is protected by, as luck would have it, a sheer wall of universes comprised of nothing but antimatter. Even a split second of exposure to one of these universes would spell doom for any would-be explorers and their home base, planet, and solar system. For this exact reason, any attempts to breach the Set Of All Sets are treated as capital offenses, and only done in extremely special circumstances.

There is a way to bypass the antimatter barrier, but it will take significant effort. Anyone interested in reaching the center of the Set Of All Sets will need a vessel equipped with barriers strong enough to block all foreign matter that the subatomic level, a transportation method strong enough to mimic a Stepper Box twice over, and an onboard intelligence smart enough to navigate through expanses of solid matter packed atom-to-atom.

Though The Institute, The Milieu, and The Order are interested in their own battles, they are each feverishly pursuing a way to breach the Set Of All Sets. The race to the core of the Set Of All Sets is about to begin.

Too Long, Didn't Read?

  • The multiverse is friggin' huge, and the only way to travel between universes is via small, simple gewgaws known as Stepper Boxes.
  • At the supposed center of the multiverse is a cluster of universes made of nothing but one type of matter. At the center of that may be the key to controlling all of reality.
  • There are three factions. One likes to subtly guide people into the multiverse, one likes to improve the lives of everyone within their control, and one seeks to preserve the original, ideal state of each universe.

If you've got the dedication to create and play multiple characters, you're welcome to try! All I ask is that you make a character sheet for each of them, to ensure that each character is equally fleshed out.

Right I suppose a few questions are in order.

Firstly, I'm sure the one everyone wants to know, Canon/AU characters acceptable?
Secondly, what sort of tolerance would the three big factions have to some PC made faction. For the sake of argument the PC faction are fairly agreeable and behaved.
And lastly, what is the terminal velocity of an eastbound swallow?

I'll go through each of your questions in sequence.

  • Canon and Alternate Universe characters are acceptable. Since I can clearly see a fellow Runner is interested in this thread, I'll also allowed OCs so long as they're connected to a non-original universe.
  • All major factions are--while not initially violent--hostile to all other factions. If you make your own faction, you may need to tread carefully around other players. Or maybe they'll choose to live and let live.
  • Terminal velocity is a constant. Assuming the theoretical space our eastbound swallow is on is Earth, the equation for determining how fast it's falling would be thus. For the sake of simplicity, we're going to be talking about a tree swallow.

Vt = sqr root (2mg/pAC)

m = mass of the swallow (normally between 16 and 25 grams, so says allaboutbirds.org)
g = Earth's gravity (9.81 m/s2)
p = the density of the air the swallow is falling through (1.225 kg/cm3)
A = the swallow's area
C = the drag coefficient of the swallow's shape i.e. how much of it is 'catching' air and how much of it is 'pushing' air

Since calculating the area (and subsequently the shape) of tree swallow is not something I'm up to doing without a physical model, A and C will remain undefined.

Vt = sqr root (402.21/0.001225AC)

It's not a very descriptive answer, but it's a good start. If you can find the drag coefficient and surface area of a tree swallow, I'll gladly give you a full answer.

Since I've got a whole bushel of interest here, I'll waste no time in getting things set up. You will most likely see the OOC before Wednesday. If not, feel free to pelt me with strongly-worded criticisms and questions with strong implications.

The Golden Order
The men and women of the multiverse dedicated towards the ideals of good, sanctity of life, and honor in protecting the innocent regardless of their homeworld. If someone's life is in danger, especially if they are either innocent and/or important for the lives and well being of others, they will protect that person.

Just realized that it would be really silly of me to force you all to wait for me to make the OOC to create your characters, so I taped together a character skeleton for y'all!

I also made a faction skeleton for those of you who want to go freelance!

@ActRaiserTheReturned, that looks like a good start to a faction. Simply fill out the sheet, and we can 'canonize' it!

Name: The Golden Order
Motives: The men and women of the multiverse dedicated towards the ideals of good, sanctity of life, and honor in protecting the innocent regardless of their homeworld. If someone's life is in danger, especially if they are either innocent and/or important for the lives and well being of others, they will protect that person or persons. In a way the Golden Order represents Order, and they keep Order buy preserving and maintaining the sanctity of dignity and life of sapient beings. They tend to keep evil as disorganized as possible, as another one of their main goals. Evil tends to strike first and ask questions later.
Base:
The Golden Order is in a pocket plane of Dungeons and Dragons but it has headquarters in many different diplomatic factions.
Notable Members:
Merlin (Saw the fall of Camelot)
Various other goody two shoes

Alien Mother Queen
Name: Alien Mother Queen
Universe: Alien v.s Predator
Canon or OC: Canon
Appearance:

Age: very old, centuries perhaps
Personality:
Surprisingly Human, she can communicate with Humans by telepathy. She's one of the few aliens intelligent enough to actually have distinctively Human traits, like love or even honorable agreements with others. She made an agreement, unspoken, with a Human woman to let her live if she could keep some of her children/eggs alive. The agreement worked somehow, and this Queen is particularily intelligent. She is as cunning as an entire pride of lions.
Abilities: She's huge, and only recently regained the ability to lay eggs. She is telepathic for her creatures, the xenomorphs, and superhumanly tough and strong. She is surprisingly fast for her enormous size, since she is larger than an Elephant.
Equipment:Her exoskeleton is so tough that modern armaments are too weak to hurt her.
Faction: Factionless| Alien Homeworld
Background:
She was a normal alien centuries ago, eventually she became a Praetorian, then a Queen. Finally she defeated the other Queens of the Alien Homeworld. She is used to dealing with organized Human or extra terrestrial societies using their superior technology to raid or invade her nest, the alien home world, and she knows how to make considerable carnage.

Hang on, why'd you go through the effort to make a faction if the character you made isn't going to be a part of it?

I think we need a Faction based on morality and ethics instead of axioms.
And I might play one character and just want the other one to be out there.

The big reason I based the factions on philosophy instead of base morality is because it generally results in blank black-and-white characters with less depth. Characters whose sole personality trait is "does the right thing, no matter the cost".

If you or someone else is willing to make a character that is actually in The Golden Order, I'll accept it. You can play the Xenomorph Queen, but I'd like it if you added more detail to her Personality, Equipment, Abilities, and Background.

I might play a member of the Golden Order, but yeah, the Golden Order isn't necessarily just a good guy faction. I've got to expand it just a little.
