Just continue with the one you were working on and I can find something probably to match up with it (I hope). Almost all of my characters are essentially humans with varying degrees of power, so when people get into robots, divine beings, or magical constructs two things generally happen: either they are outclassed or they are, by virtue of the abilities they possess, some kind of direct counter. Neither is much fun for either party. >.>

You'd be fine if i have only the powers down for now? If so, i think i can get it done in an hour or two.

I can probably get a jist from there if I have that. I am sort of busy with work today as it is our monthly meeting, so I may not be able to reciprocate with anything on my character sheet today - I should be able to scribble something together by tomorrow though.

I may be alone in this, as the Arena works on the 'Multiverse' idea but I would like to see more guidelines to character creation, a standardization of magical and supernatural abilities.

Currently I feel that character creation falls along the lines of do whatever you want and the judges will decide if it fits or not. While this works, sorta. Most matches are halted by confusion as people try to decide how certain abilities effect other abilities or how they interact with 'this world'.

I think standarizing the most prominent of abilities will help stream-line combat so that there is less of an OOC mess. This will help with the confusion people seem to have when it comes to the need for 'preping' abilities. I am of the mind that all non-mundane techniques should have a prep, a phase of gathering power, concentrating, etc. Though I get that this isn't plausible with how some characters are written.

What prominent abilities you ask? Well the use of Arcane Magic, Ki(and all its various names), Nanites, All forms of Kinesis (pyro, electro, etc) to name but a few. Maybe I'm still alone in this? I don't know.

The depth/strength of the above mentioned powers would be limited by a more structured tier/power system.

Thoughts? Ideas? No.. I'm stupid? lol

Standardizing abilities and techniques is a difficult thing to do, depending on to what extent you are wanting to do it. You'll have to clarify to what extent you mean.

It is hard to enforce tiers which is why there was a stray away from it solely because of the wide variety of characters and variety of powers. Everyone has the ability to accept or decline the match, so there shouldn't be much mystery going into the match and most people should have already thought through some of the interactions their abilities would have with another. A judge would come in many cases when there is a disagreement between the two parties on how said abilities would actually interact.

I'm generally not a huge fan of intricate tier systems because even if you continue to divide the characters up, there will still be issues between upper and lower end of a tier. I feel it is just easier to logically look at how two characters might match up when arranging a battle and accept/decline/edit bios accordingly.

As for preparation, I think most people are pretty consistent with preforming preparation unless there are specific battles where it is agreed it isn't necessarily needed because of some reasons, such as other constraints aside from preparation. Trying to create a standardized system will generally get us into the same mess as an intricate tier system. Like before, we get to see what abilities our opponent has and we should generally have a sense of any aspects of a technique or ability that wouldn't require preparation. This can easily be enforced or clarified either before or during the match by the parties involved or judges.

In a very simplified form, I view magic as a product of time and focus (as in specialization), but there are obviously other factors.

Nothing in particular. The only obligatory section of your character sheet would be a list of all of your character's abilities and powers in scrupulous detail; that, plus weight and height, since they're pretty important factors in a fight too. The rest is up to you; though certainly, including a backstory or important personality traits always make it better, as is a description of their appearance too - however, it all can go directly into the roleplay itself.

You bring up some good points Innue.

I also know that what I want isn't exactly feasible since the foundation of the Arena is to allow people to play the characters they've made without too much trouble. Perhaps what I suggest would best fit in a seperate thread, seperate from the arena.

An alternate area for tournaments and combat that follows a different rule-set.

I agree. Detailed rules work best in those types rather than as a global overhead, at least in my opinion.

I am doing a tournament with specialized set/structure as well, so they can be very useful as a balancing mechanism. :)

What's this? Both @Tasuke and @yoshua171 have returned to the Arena?! Joy of Joys! And Welcome!

Its nice seeing two of old Guilds possibly top 5 fighters making a come back. Some of the most entertaining and skilled writers the Arena has ever known. The top individual's who made me stick with the arena now resurfacing. The only way this could be even better is if Lyzan himself returned.

Such a shame no one has formally welcomed you two back.

Anyway, I think that's enough ego stroking for now. We don't want them blowing up all over the chatroom, and Rilla just got this place cleaned up. We all know he won't get off his ass to clean it ever again.

Sp formal announcements.

Who if any of you folks are interested in the Multiverse of the arena and would like to contribute? It's basically the story side of the Arena that focuses a bit more on character building and interactions. Still taking idea's and might be running a few by Rilla to interlace with the Rank system since everyone seems to like points a great deal. :K

'course I won't, but its not like any of you will either.

and personally, I'd rather keep the ranking system separate from everything, and let any character building happen on its own. But I am willing to look at any ideas. in the infamous words of Franklin's old repo boss, 'You let me know what it is you want, andI will tell you why it simply cannot be.'

@ImportantNobody Yo, if you're up for that training session for Evvie. I'm in just the right mood to actually write up Lairabelle's new sheet.

I need to post her part in the tournament fighting the invaders, although we could do funky timeline stuff to have her do stuff with Lairabelle at the same time if desired. Or she could die as planned and Lairabelle can find her after she respawns off world, however that works in the multiverse. She's not actually in a tournament match but I guess she could still respawn from their magic, if @Skallagrim is fine with such magic working outside of the matches and they spawn her somewhere safe (another random planet far enough away from danger).

@ImportantNobody It's fine, that gives me plenty of time to properly work out all the kinks in her balancing issues.

I've decided that psionic powers, though fitting, aren't quite fair. While she's not the sort of psychic who can pick you up and slap you around with her mind, mind bullets that are practically invisible are kind of unfair.

If I do practically invisible stuff such as wind magic I often have shimmering distortions or something to that effect to give it away, explained that you can see it due to the magical energy being there.

I'll be getting some of my character sheets to an improved state in the coming days that I'd certainly like to fight with. What sort of character/battle would you like to have?

@GreivousKhan Thank you for your warm welcome; unfortunately my gif post will fade into obscurity soon enough.

Until then...

You and me, alone, in the Friendship Room!

By the way, your forum title confuses me; I always thought you were a guy. Am I wrong?

Well, I've edited Hisame's profile to include techniques. If anyone wants to have a go at her, let me know, or if it's more appropriate, I'll post something in the HQ thread. There's no real stipulations apart from the assumption that she won't stop until one of them is dead.
