On the Eve of War

The flash of the camera stung General Stae Pjjokhat, causing him to shift uncomfortably in his seat. He never liked photographs: so imperfect, so prone to catch what wasn't properly prepared and presented. He everyone had stayed still like they were supposed to this time. No matter the groans of the lower officers, General Pjjokhat could not abide by bad pictures: The photographer would just have to take another if it didn't meet his standards.

Those officers now had their heads turned left, facing their high commander. He felt the gazes but took his time turning to meet them. “You may rise,” he finally instructed. A wave of relief swept over the men, a mix of middle-aged and older Khaitis with a few young men and Raethonites thrown in. They were immediately up and about, talking and pacing and asking NCOs to fetch them tea. More slowly and deliberately, the general stood up as well.

“Aed willing, I hope you all know war is upon us in less than two months,” Pjjokhat remarked.

“Aye, General. And with your blessing, we'll be enjoying the tea and atmosphere of the city while we still can,” retorted one of the younger officers, a colonel.

“So I take it your section's trenches are in good order? Depots well-stocked for a long defense? Field headquarters properly fortified? Ammunition properly distributed?”

“Yes sir!” the colonel replied with enthusiasm. His reply was more than obvious, of course. The meticulous commander that he was, General Pjjokhat had overseen most of these measures since the beginning of 1906, when the First Army Group first moved its headquarters West to Faris. Though the work had not been as rapid as that under the famously energetic General Hjarkin to the South, the entire First Army command agreed that once finished it was the most elaborate of any Surv-Akur trench-works to date. Until the inevitable war began, all that had to be done was to maintain and supply them, an easy task with Faris so close by and Foedinei not much farther.

General Stae Pjjokhat, however, was never entirely satisfied. He rolled his eyes at the colonel's conviction, but he knew ordering the high officers back to their sections would accomplish little in this moment. “Fine, you and the others have my leave, as long as the photograph turns out right. But I expect everyone back to work tomorrow morning. Rest is good for a warrior's health, but too much will ruin it! Remember that the greatest trial of the century – nay, of our entire generation, is nearly upon us!”

The entire officer corps, entirely serious and respectful of their general, replied, “Sir, yes sir!”

__

The sight of General Nel Hjarkin approaching on his horse drew the undivided attention of all three-hundred soldiers of the Second Army's 205th Battalion. These were all veterans of the Reconquest of Southern Raethon, battle-hardened troops who had earned the respect of the General under his command four years ago. They were his prized loyal warriors, and he was their unwavering great leader.

Once he had crossed the line-up once and ridden back to the front and center, Hjarkin and his aides stopped their horses. He beamed a grin wide enough and bright enough in the sun for the soldiers in the rear rows to see.

“Hail the Emperor, proud servants of the Sword of Aed, soldiers of the 205th Battalion!”

HAIL THE EMPEROR!” shouted all three-hundred men in unison.

“Our trenches are strong walls that the enemy will break against, our machine-guns fires that will consume them. Our earthworks and weapons are a fortress stronger than any our ancestors could have imagined. But have no illusions! The war to come will not be won by defense alone! The Surv-Akur holy warriors of Aed shall not be content to stay still forever, or neglect to bring the fight to the enemy's own camp! This is why I am calling you, fully armed and prepared for battle, to this barracks square! For when the time comes to sally, who will lead the charge?

THE TWO-HUNDRED FIFTH!

“When we overrun the heathen enemy, who will raise the Grand Imperial flag?

THE TWO-HUNDRED FIFTH!

“When we return as victors, who will bring back the enemies' swords?

THE TWO-HUNDRED FIFTH!

Exactly!” General Nel Hjarkin raised his fist into the air. “Aed brings victoryI

AED BRINGS VICTORY! AED BRINGS VICTORY! AED BRINGS VICTORY!

The chant would go one for minutes, not only by the 205th but across the entire army as more units joined in. If one thing could be said for General Nel Hjarkin, it was that his own impatience instilled confidence and zeal in his soldiers.

__

“For the front page, you say?” inquired General Ishui Gvardiu to the journalist sitting across from him, not the one who had just taken his photograph. She was a middle-aged Byrnian, dressed in Old Byrnis merchant garb but with the Press Service grey cap.

“Indeed! With war coming, people want to hear the words of the General who invented the weapon of modern battle. So, what is your take on the strategic situation?” The press agent brought her pen close to her notebook.

“Victory is more than assured. The enemy will be forced to react on multiple fronts, in their colonies and in their homelands, by forces far superior in number. Between the Societatem and the Imperial Restoration, the Restoration is easily the stronger and better-positioned alliance.”

“As an inventor of the heavy automatic rifle, colloquially known as the 'machine-gun,' what do you say to reports of enemy superiority in weapons technology? If war-machines such as yours can negate the power of numbers, should we fear that the size of the Surv-Akur and our allied armies will be ineffective?”

“Of course not! A modern war like this one, of course, will take longer and cost more lives than those we are used to, and such is sadly the price of defending the Empire from heathen colonizers. But the advantage of numbers still means a great deal in war, if applied properly. More importantly, the technological gap you're referring to is often exaggerated. A rifle with a few more rounds per clip, a machine-gun firing a few dozens more rounds per minute, a shell with ten centimeters more explosive radius: These are not what will decide the war. While certainly important, small technological edges cannot make up for the crucial questions of planning, positioning, supplies, and manpower. And in these respects the Grand Survaek Empire, and its allies of the Restoration, are much better-prepared than our enemies.”

“And what, in your opinion, makes such a protracted and costly form of war worth it?”

“The glory of the Empire, the light of Aed, and most of all, the security of the Survaekom people. The Deltorans, Soroyans, and Murenheidtans have a long history of grabbing Serranthian lands from their rightful native rulers, not least among them the Grand Survaek Empire itself. We now have the power to defend ourselves from further incursions by individual enemy powers, but we should not fool ourselves into thinking they will not collaborate to push their colonial ambitions further. If we do not reclaim our historic Empire, our foes will use that very Empire as a pool of resources and conscription to conquer the rest. Only strength in unity with our allies and a deep commitment to victory can assure the long-term integrity of our glorious nation.”

“Well said, General. Now, as commander of the Surv-Akur Third Army Group, what can you say for how your own forces will contribute to our victory?”

“Alas, I cannot divulge such information. But what I can say is that I am very confident in our war-preparations, thanks to his Imperial Majesty Shayaer Khaitis, Sword of Aed. With his blessing and the grace of Aed, the Third Army Group is the hammer that will dash our unrighteous foes to pieces. Glory to the Emperor and all praise to Aed!”

“Glory to the Emperor and all praise to Aed, indeed.”

_____

FIRE!

Two-dozen rifle shots rang from the 10th Platoon of the 103rd Desert Battalion. The cracks and bangs continued until the commanding lieutenaint raised his hand and declared, “CEASE FIRE!

Once the firing had stopped, the lieutenaint jogged briskly ahead to inspect the results. Eighteen of thirty “enemy patrol” dummies had suffered punctures or tears from the fusillade. Not bad, but not quite good enough.

The lieutenaint walked back to his soldiers. “We'll have to do better, comrades. Remember: Mark your targets, hit them, and move to the next. Aim for the most exposed first, but don't stop with them. You'll need to keep the ones in cover suppressed, even if you don't hit them outright. Also,” he pointed to four different soldiers, “some of you didn't move to proper cover after the first shots. The enemy's going to return fire quicker than you might expect. First stance should be your best for aiming, but second should be all about presenting as little of yourself as possible to their rifles. In a platoon to platoon fight like this, we have no trench: Every man out of cover could be the difference between victory and defeat. Understood?”

Yes sir!” replied the troops somewhat tiredly. They were all used to hot, dry weather, but even after years of garrison the Hauthkaj Desert was something more. They all took a moment to drink from their canteens, but what everyone really wanted was shade and rest in their camp. Unfortunately, they wouldn't be getting relief anytime soon.

“Now, let's all go fetch more targets.”

Tramel

1907

"Tramel must stay away from talks of war if we are to continue!" Minister Huckl protested. "We can weather the storm."

"And for how long?" A elderly gentlemen said. His greying blonde hair slicked behind his head. On his wrinkled hand was a freshly lit pipe glowing warmly at the dim corner of the room. He wore a uniform faded by the many years of service it has faced.

Minister Huckl turned towards the older person. His eyes narrowed on the figure in the slight darkness. He gave a sigh upon recognizing the character. "What is it now Mr. Brookes?"

The figure draped in shadows lit his tobacco pipe to reveal his face if only for a second. The weak fire from the sparked match and the the embers of the freshly lit tobacco exposed a thick mustache curled at the ends and trimmed with the utmost care. Sky blue irises glint in the near darkness. They were directed towards the foreign minister, piercing and intimidating. Huckle couldn't help but stare into his eyes as he finished lighting his pipe and taking in a deep breathe.

"General Brookes Minister, General." He stood from his chair and walked towards Huckl. "Preach all you wish about keeping ourselves from from war but our neighbors are in conflict and it is only a matter of time before we are dragged into it."

"And you wish us to fight? With what!?" The minister responded, raising his voice but forcing himself not to yell. Huckl wouldn't lose his composition in front of the other aristocrats and the warmonger facing him. He steadied himself and stood his ground.

"Minister, I am not a fool. I do not want war. However" The old commander had his eyes wander around the room as he continued "we have to choose sides. We simply cannot stand out of a war this time. We must make our friends and make them fast. Otherwise, we may find ourselves in rough weather without any relief."

As much as Huckl didn't want to admit it, the general was right. Tramel was going to have to court one side or the other and hope to choose right.

Emergency Meeting of the Liberation Council

With only a mere three days left for the Societatem to agree to the demands of the Restoration Movement, the Liberation Council came together for a final time before the final day of the Ultimatum. Before the meeting began Divination Priests from the Marble Monastery were brought to the headquarters of the national government to perform a ceremony and blessing on members of the Council and to all of Xian in the coming days...

A cloud of cigarette and cigar smoke hung over the meeting room. President-General Chiang Cai Xiao held his place at the center of the table, beside him Shiu Fuhua and General Jan Shinguo. Among other influential Council members sat Jang Winghau and recently promoted General Lang Shao-Ren, who had been called upon first.

"With the most pressing matter at hand, the Council would like to hear the current situation of our border with the Kingdom of Soroya. We presume you both have organized your trench lines and rationed out equipment according to regulation?" Chiang began, gesturing to the two chiefs at the table.

The older Shinguo took a moment to rise to his feet, his hands pressed to the table to support his movement. "Aye, President-General. My command has already established machine gun emplacements and artillery lines along our Northern border with the Soroyan-devils. If our demands are not met, we can begin immediate operations when given the order. As we speak I have my junior officers doing inspections on a hourly basis across our trench line."

"And you, General Ren?"

"The Southern Army Group currently anticipates a swift and deadly victory on our front, President-General. I have learned from the mistakes of the Yamarano-Basai war and do not intend to allow the casualties of that conflict be on my hands once again. Though General Shinguo and I disagree on strategy, I believe both of us shall serve the Xianese people proudly in the coming conflict sir." Ren gave a bow and took his seat once again, Shinguo following shortly after.

"Very well then. What of the current state of our, to put it simply, war economy?" Chiang continued, adjusting his glasses and turning his gaze to Jang Winghau.

Jang took a long draw from his cigarette, said cigarette placed neatly onto a jade holder that looked as though it had hardly been used up until that point. "The Type 98-07's production line has finished and the product has been shipped both north and south to the front. We expect another batch within a years time alongside new artillery designs and munitions. While we are the lesser economic power in the Restoration, I believe thus far we have most properly used our available budget in gearing for this conflict against the Societatem." Jang finished, taking another draw and giving a self-satisfied smile to the President-General.

Jang had become snarky as he gained more influence in the Faresian markets, this led to him quickly becoming the black sheep on the Liberation Council and rumors against him spread ear to ear rapidly. However, his knowledge of money and finance alone kept him alive and sitting before the President-General.

"And finally, mister Fuhua. What is the status of our foreign affairs?"

Shiu Fuhua grinned and bowed to the President-General and the Council. He strode across the room to a map of the world that hung on the wall. "Now, gentlemen, we are on the eve of a war that will change the face of our world for decades to come. With our recent friendship with Manyeong, we are at a optimum position to dominate against any warlord state like Yamarano or the Varians who still encroach on our borders. Our only concern now lies in the fact that we have no major ally in Faresia. Our alliance leader and every other member of the Restoration lies an ocean away, and thus in this coming conflict we must rely on ourselves alone. Unlike mister Winghau, I still remain opposed to this conflict and wish to make that position heard to this council, President-General." Fuhua removed his glasses and wiped them with his handkerchief before returning to his place at the table.

Fuhua was an awkward gentleman, but when it came to writing legal documents on a international level he was a master of diplomatic action. Some would dare-say his often innocent awkward appearance and mannerisms made him seem less intimidating and therefore a better diplomat, while others viewed him as merely weak willed and easily influenced. Regardless, he would state his mind in the Council and openly disagree with the President-General, which in turn earned him respect by Chiang.

"Thank you Ambassador Fuhua. Your concerns are duly noted. Now, if there is no other voices to be heard I believe we can end this meeting. Mister Winghau and I shall be going to Jiangpo to continue trade negotiations with Manyeong and for a full inspection of our naval assets. Ambassador Fuhua shall be traveling to the Grand Empire of Survaek, the Societatem would not dare commit a war crime by harming an unarmed vessel so soon into this inevitable conflict. Generals Ren and Shinguo shall return to their posts and await further orders. Are we all clear of the tasks that lie ahead of us gentlemen?"

The room echoed with 'Yes, President-General's and nods as the Liberation Council disbanded and filed from the room, the grey cloud of smoke following them out of the room...

1907

A Call to Arms

Freedom under threat?

May 6th, 1907

As of yesterday Survaekom officials have announced an official state of war between Soroya, after being rightfully denied their claim to the entire continents of Serranthia, Sarelia, and Faresia. What many have called “an unreasonable demand to start an unreasonable war.” Soroyan President Kevin Notles simply commented saying “To give up these lands is to surrender Soroyan pride. The Imperial Restoration has shown only to be a pack of wolves hunting for sheep.”

As of this week nations across the globe have begun mass mobilization of their industry and armed forces on a scale never before seen. Reports say that this war will be quick, others have denied these claims. Soroyan Generals have promised this war won’t last longer than the Soroyo-Anvegad Colonial War two years ago. An interview with general Naut Ranervelt renowned for his successful naval invasion of Soroyan Faresia in the Soroyo-Anvegad Colonial War has stated this “I can not promise a specific date or time when the bloodshed will end, but I can promise this, we will win. The sun never sets on the Soroyan Empire, and it will not be the Restoration that brings us into the dark.”

Though no mass conscription plan has yet to happen, many experts speculate that it is only a matter of time before this occurs. Several posters can be found calling upon Soroyans to play their part and enlist today.

The Ekonian Games Continue

The Ekonian Games

May 6th, 1907

After the recent declaration of war by Survaek, many feared that the Ekonian games would be canceled, but much to the surprise Kevin Notles proudly announced “The Ekonian games once stood above the terrors of war in the past, and so it will proudly stand against them today.” Invites have been sent across the globe and several nations have already accepted them, even nations in the restoration. However, several nations apart of the restoration have responded back shortly after informing Soroyan officials that they will not be attending this year, until the war is over.

Strangely enough, Zellonia has also denied the invitation to the Ekonian games stating that their people care little for friendly competition. A shocking statement to many to say the least, however no officials have made any comments on the reply.

Western Desert Campaign (May 5th -- Present)

WESTERN DESERT FRONT, MAY 1907

SOUTHERN FRONT
The Survaekom city of Arkhaer suddenly becomes home to nearly 200,000 Survaekom soldiers. With different orders, the Second Army Group and Third Army Group embark on a week long disentangling, with the streets of Arkhaer only adding to the chaos as battalions and platoons fight through the cities residents to find their respective commands.

20,000 soldiers of the Second Army Group disappear, only to reappear several hours later having accidentally headed east out of the city before realizing their mistake. A campaign initially intended to begin on May 5th has not yet begun well into the second week of the month. On the 12th of May, the situation has relieved itself and the armies begin to move north.

WESTERN FRONT
The First Army Group under General Pjjokhat reaches the Eerkhad River, of which is heavily entrenched by the Deltoran First Field Army on the other side. The Deltorans, to the Survaekom observers are not on guard however, and several commanders object that a breakthrough across the river is possible. General Pjjokhat immediately orders an assault along the river near the city of Mikus.

BATTLE OF MIKUS
The first battle of the war, the Battle of Mikus involved three Survaekom battalions crossing into the city of Mikus, the only position along the Eerkhad River that was easily crossed, considering a city sat on both sides of the river. Held by the Serranthians, the city was defended by a single infantry battalion with thirty Madsen A12 machine guns.

Survaekom soldiers entering Mikus, May 13th, 1907

On the morning of the 13th, the 155th and 156th Infantry Battalions entered Mikus, then found the Deltorans settled in along the city's eastern edge. The attack was short and bloody and indecisive. The Madsen A12 machine gun was vicious, with an interesting tut-tut-tut sound, slower and more methodical than contemporary guns with a more menacing punch. The Survaekom's laid down heavy fire, but had the misfortune of being on the offensive. Considered a successful probing attack, General Pjjokhat was given key intel on the enemy, while General Leroux was alerted of the considerable enemy presence hours after the attack.

At the end of the 13th, the Survaek battalions retreated back to the east end of the city, while the Deltorans stayed in position.

CASUALTIES
Grand Survaek Empire: 4,543 soldiers (4,543 Rifles)
Republic of Deltora: 1,911 soldiers (1,911 Vulcaine Mk. II rifles, 5 Madsen A12 machine guns)

The attack on Mikus caused the population there to realize that the war was upon them. They began a mass exodus of the city, to the west, toward Khad. The Republic of Samgola immediately sent word back to Evemont, requesting assistance in granting asylum to the refugees that would soon be flocking in.

The New Republic Of Kalpia-Year 1907

Kalpian News

We are Ready!!!

A few days ago our president Franz Bastian Sorg made a declaration of war to the Survaek Empire in response to their Ultimatum , this action offically states that the Societatem is the place where Kalpian belongs to , while most of the goverment had a hard time choosing to join Societatem or to leave it , our president made very clear that Kalpia had to help it fellow nations in order to achieve peace not for the world but for Kalpia itself and its citizens , the declaration may not has been what a member of Societatem would say but what a Kalpian would say about the war , the reactions to his speech has been very supportive and most of the country has decided to side with him and the ideals of peace for Kalpia , the industries has started to produce supplies and weapons , most importantly the army has been mobilizated , one of biggest standing armies of the world , the population has been called to fully support the war and the goverment has issued several posters and war bonds .

"Some weeks ago the Republic of Kalpia got threatened by the Empire of Survaek and their "claims" to our oversea territories , rightfully territories of the Kalpia Republic that are inhabited by our citizens , the kind of threats could has been peacefully solved by diplomatical means , this only shows that the nations that back up the ultimatum do not wish peace and that kind of threat only has one response and it is War , our population is not afraid of war and it never was afraid of it , it had suffer from war years before the creation of the republic and the years after , we have look for war as a mean to end the threats to our nation and it citizens and finally if any other nation has the courage to the make such threats to us again , I will say them that we are Ready! "

The Situation on Vierkas

Currently in Vierkas one of the Kalpian colonies , the small garrison has started to send scouts to the jungle and to start to move the army to the frontier with Sumaya , currently the situation with Sumaya has been mostly peaceful but the recent tensions has made the population of Vierkas worry and some of them has already leaved to Mistburn or Adlake in Kalpia , the jungle of Vierkas has been a very difficult terrain for the armies there , but the war with Zellonia and now with the tensions has made that the jungle of Vierkas a very well know place of the army and most of the place there has been either mapped or secured by Kalpian forces.

Empire of Anvegad
May 1907

Palace of the Sovereigns

Chairman Volkov looked at the wall of timepieces, letting the methodical tick-tick of the clockwork clocks roll over him as he sat at his desk, awaiting an answer.

"No reply from Murenheldt or Luckland. Not even a official letter of refusal." Noted the Minister of War, idly tapping a cigarette on his case. Volkov quietly nodded in reply. Curious how the steps leading to war were so anticlimatic, but he knew better than to expect a dramatic beginning to a war likely to have far reaching consequences for the world and for Anvegad.

Pulling a folder out of his desk, Volkov looked over the written declaration of war with Murenheldt one last time. Unless Murenheldt came with a declaration of surrender or desire to mediate a negotiated annexation in recognition of Anvegad's claims to their lands in reclamation of the Iron Empire within the week, there would be a formal state of war between Anvegad and Murenheldt. The legalease and arcane symbology of words rendered it in many other ways, but the base meaning ultimately boiled down to that. Another similar document was addressed similarly to Luckland. A third was held in reserve for Deltora, but he stayed his hand on that one to handle it later. There were more immediate issues to face first, and the political situation warranted some patience on the matter.

Watching the clock chime nine o clock, Volkov pulled out a pen and wrote his signature on the indicated lines and applied the necessary wax stamped seals of the Sovereigns and Anvegad here and there. The formal public announcement and cerimony would come in a few days, but the closed-letter orders for the military to begin final preparations and battlegroup movements to the nation's borders would be issued immediately.

So the dice was cast.

"WHO ARE WE?"

"OZO'S ARTILLERY!"

"WHO DO WE SERVE?

"WE SERVE THE GUNS!"

"WHAT IS OUR DUTY?

"TO SERVE THE GUNS!"

"WHAT IS OUR OATH?"

"TO SERVE OUR IRONCAST LORD UNTO DEATH! OZO! OZO! OZO!"

Colonel Tannen frowned slightly at the display of the artillerists hauling their guns onto flatbed cars destined for the Murenheldt border. The veterans of Prince Ozo's Artillery hadn't been the same since the war in Soroya, returning home in shame after destroying their guns to keep them out of the hands of the enemy. Many of the artillery pieces that had gone abroad were regimental heirlooms, and the Tyran gunners descended from the first feudal lord to forge Anvegad artillery took such things seriously, whether they were avatar-worshippers or not.

Now equipped with new guns, and rumored to be first in line for even heavier ordinance in production and soon to be completed, Tannen seriously pitied whoever was next to fall under the siege guns of Prince Ozo's Artillery as he turned to his own Emphyran Rifles to begin directing them towards their own northbound train as it steamed into the military station.

A storm was coming. And they would endure where lesser men fell.

A SURPRISING PROTEST OF WITHDRAWAL FROM THE GAMES

In a curious incident in Kashkur, Anvegad's closest city to the Deltoran border, the Anvehold national Tennis team was caught attempting to cross the Deltoran border by military pickets of the 44th Kashkur Guards. Despite an official government notice that Anvegad's particpation in the Ekonian Games was regrettably canceled due to the heightened state of tensions between the Imperial Restoration and the Sociatatem, the sports team were not deterred in attempting to participate in the games, even if they had to smuggle themselves across the border to do so.

General Harkevich has ordered several rear-echelon forces to be on the lookout for other overzealous sports teams and groups in an effort to catch them before they cause any border incidents with Deltora.

"Though their courage and desire to serve the Empire is extremely laudable, we cannot risk national assets such as them at this time with war on the horizon. If they are so eager to serve, they are encouraged to do so on the homefront and in support of our Empire in other ways. There will be no shortage of duties for them to fulfill, nor for any of us."

WESTERN SERRANTHIAN THEATER

WIKUS
On May 19th, the Surv-Akur First Army Group launched a coordinated offensive against the city of Wikus along the northern shores of Eerkhbad river. With 12,000 men of four infantry battalions, they advanced through the city, flanking previously known machine gun emplacements. The Deltorans there, outflanked, outgunned and outnumbered fell back. The city had been captured by dusk of the same day. It would not remain long in the hands of the Survaekom.

Deltoran Field Artillery Unit posing in front of an A05 Auguste Field Gun, May 1907

On May 23rd the Deltoran III and IV Divisions advanced into Wikus proper. 40,000 strong, they were well fed and well supplied; though lacked fire support in their advance. The Second Battle of Wikus began on May 23rd, with 40,000 Deltorans moving to hold the city against impending Survaekom assaults. The Survaekoms fell back without much fuss. The Deltorans moved their assembled A05 Auguste Field Guns into position to bombard retreating Survaekom positions. A steep counter barrage by the superior Survaek guns silenced the Deltorans as dusk settled over the city.

Over 10,000 men dead on both sides with the borders having ultimately returned to their original positions on the river.

SOUTHERN FRONT
While the Surv-Akur Second Army Group untangled itself and get underway, the XII and IV Corps of the Second Deltoran Field Army attempted to foray into the desert. Utilizing maps drawn in the 1890's, the men set out assuming that roads had been built, and wandered aimlessly for three days until one of the commanders realized that no roads had ever been built so far into the Serranthian desert. They immediately entrenched themselves, preparing for the much greater Survaekom force.

Three days later the Surv-Akur Second Army Group arrived, but they were less than half the size initially reported, numbering only 100,000 or so thousand. Skirmishing took place, but trenches were quickly built.

A day later a major assault came, initially attempted as a flanking maneuver along the Eerkhad River, the Deltoran 6th Infantry Division attacked along the banks of the river, attempting a breakthrough to the city of Arkhaer. The Battle of the Eerkhad River was the bloodiest of the entire front, lasting six days.

The division met awkwardly positioned Survaekom machine gunners, and after six days of fighting the Deltoran's forced a breakthrough at the axis of attack. However, without any assistance, the 6th Division was exhausted and vulnerable to counter attack.

EASTERN FRONT
The front, south of Mwikus to the end of the Eerkhad River, was largely uneventful; with large concentrations of Deltoran and Survaekom troops well entrenched with machine guns and field guns supporting them.

INLAND SEA
On May 17th, the Surv-Vyaez Expeditionary Force (4 CL's, 8 DD's) blockades the port city of Khad, cutting off incoming supplies from reaching the Deltoran field armies there.

On May 18th the Survaekom destroyer Teiris attacks and sinks the unguarded Deltoran merchantman Kalas. The Kalas was carrying 5,000 supplies to Serranthia. (-5,000 Supplies in Serranthia for Deltora).

SARELIAN THEATER

Sarelian Sea
Following the declaration of war, the Empire of Sumaya immediately began combat operations. On May 16th, the Sumayan submarine spotted an inbound Kalpian fleet headed southeast toward Greyhedge. The submarine, RSN Phila attempted an attack at 1524 but it's torpedo missed. Following a three hour pursuit, the Kalpian destroyer Grabo successfully depth charged the submarine before rejoining the convoy to Greyhedge.

Vicarri Sea
While fleets of both belligerent nations did cross the Vicarri Sea, no actions took place here during the third week of May.

Sumaya
Only hours after midnight on the 17th, the 2nd Sumayan Army under Raja Dhara crossed into Kalpian Sarelia. Their first objective, the small city of Hent was protected by a single Kalpian Division. The Battle of Hent was a fierce affair, as Kalpian soldiers fought on ruggedly; but for their efforts of 10,000 men to defend the city, they had only 180 FT-18 machine guns to defend themselves.

The battle raged on well into the week, and Hent was completely surrounded by the time the Sumayan 1st Army met mobilized Kalpian troops further into the border. The remainder of the 2nd Army pressed west toward Viertas, but was held up by the thick jungle foliage and hastily designed Kalpian trenches. Hent continued on, but it's casualties were already mounting up. General Dhara, hopeful to capture Hent to secure his rear lines, sent three sporadic frontal charges up the hill, but they were repulsed by courageous Kalpian defenses.

Greyhedge
The Kalpian island of Greyhedge was a fruitful jumping off point between Kalpia and the Sarelian colonies, and the Kalpian High Command immediately ordered the reinforcement of the small island following the declaration of war. The Kalpian 3rd Army was escorted by the Kalpian Home Fleet and landed without incident.

Soroyan Sarelia
The Sumayan 12th Fleet under Admiral Cahya Budan set sail three days after the beginning of the campaign with a half dozen troop barges toward Soroyan Sarelia. Sumayan intelligence had indicated that the Soroyan naval presence there was lackluster at best, but operatives there failed to notice that much of the Soroyan colonial fleet had been out of Fort Celnaer and further up the coast following major storms in the area, and the Soroyans had lodged a rather substantial fleet in the area.

The Sumayan 12th Fleet, comprised of the armored cruiser RSN Anakonda, the light cruisers Fara, Minawa, and Gao and the destroyers Nata, Nuki and Nes set sail from Suma to escort the Sumayan 1st Army to land on the eastern shore of Soroyan Sarelia. On the morning of the 22nd, Soroyan spotters chimed to Fort Celnaer via runner that a fleet was inbound and notified Rear Admiral Hart, who sortied immediately.

The Soroyan Colonial Fleet sailed with it's flagship as the SRF Sikea, a pre-dreadnought over a decade old. The fleet sortied with a second pre-dreadnought, the Reijimink, an armored cruiser, 3 light cruisers and 6 destroyers. The light cruiser Wildenberg's boilers lost pressure, but the guns were manned in case of a pending attack on the harbor.

The Battle of the Tennet Sea began at 1351 when the pre-dreadnought Sikea turned hard to port and loosed a barrage at the lead Sumayan ship. The Sumayan armored cruiser RSN Anakonda returned fire, turning to meet the pre-dreadnoughts guns. At 1406 the pre-dreadnought Reijimink's second volley hit the Nuki and her aft magazines went up, erupting in a fiery explosion. The troop transports turned about, sailing northeast then turning back to the south with destroyers Nes and Nata escorting them.

The RSN Anakonda took two direct hits from the 10-inch guns of the Soroyan pre-dreadnoughts and was forced to retire, while the Sumayan and Soroyan light cruisers parleyed for half an hour, with the SRF Brinks, a new Walle-class destroyer completely a successful torpedo attack that struck the Sumayan light cruiser RSN Fara in less than twelve minutes. Too slow to keep up, the Soroyan pre-dreadnoughts retired after the Sumayans left range, limping back to Suma.

The Republic of Deltora
May 1907

Southern Front

6th Infantry Division
Occupied Murenheidtan Serranthia
Late May

The shifting sands settled as Lieutenant Colonel Delacroix peered out over the parapet at the tan landscape beyond. From this position he overlooked the two trench lines running parallel to one another that made up the front lines, he was however closer to the Survaekom trenches than his own. In his hands, a folded and creased sheet of paper remained as a breathless runner, a rather young man by his looks, slumped against the trench wall besides him.
"Orders... From HQ." The young man wheezed.

Two days prior, the division had crossed the border hugging the western bank of the river Eerkhad in an attempt to avoid the two Survaekom army groups in the region, both of which were believed to have been delayed, however as the Division made their way across the border they found themselves under-fire from Survaekom forces on a manned border. Caught in open ground, the Division had assaulted the enemy position rather than pull back to avoid the entire Divisions demise. Nevertheless, casualties had been high but the position had been taken, hastily trenches facing Survaekom positions had been dug by the beleaguered division.

The Lieutenant Colonel turned around to face what was once 20,000 souls, now 5,000 wary ones, all dirtied and bloodied.
"Orders are, to defend and hold the forward position with remaining forces until relief can arrive." The Colonel spoke aloud.
"All soldiers of the 6th Deltoran Infantry Division are to be awarded, upon return to Deltora the Gallant Cross in recognition for their service to the country, and its people... You heard the paper men! It is up to us, to defend this breach for our country. Here, we fight a foe which would see our children put in chains! We fight for the common good, and it is demanded of us to defend this position and by the saints will we do it!" His voice booming now as the men steadily rose with their rifles.
"I want machine guns positioned along here, and here, and a spotter overlooking the Survaek trench-line, get me a report on their firepower so we have something to show for this damned nightmare." Delacroix continued as he returned to looking over the parapet. The 6th Infantry Division would be ready.

The Butchers Bill

Within 23 days, 38,275 men had lost their lives in Serranthia. 21,076 Deltorans had been recovered and identified as deceased. 17,199 Survaekom had likewise been reported dead by sources on both sides. The result of three engagements.

On may 25th, during a lull of the fighting along the Eerkhad River. Deltorans, helms marked with the red cross and bearing stretches crossed the front carrying the Survaekom's fallen to deliver them to the opposing force, and in doing so allow the dead to finally rest.

Upright and Equal

Even though the war had begun in full in Sarelia and Serrathia, the battle had yet to begin in Faresia. Thus, life continued in the same tense way it had for weeks upon the Soroyan-Xianese border in the North and South. Each morning, Xianese regiments would rise from their barracks and continue drilling in how to properly enter, exit, and re-enter trenches, hand to hand combat within the close-quarters of the trenches, and finally firing and reloading. Command called this 'the three basics' and they were strictly drilled for the inevitable day that these tasks would cease being training and become reality. It was drilled into the minds of the Xianese soldier that soon their sparing partner would be a Soroyan soldier and the target dummies would be living, breathing, and moving enemies to the Xianese revolution.

Xianese soldiers practicing firing and reloading as quickly as possible, this drill would eventually become a sort of game within Xianese regiments in the calm days before the war.

While the men trained, the general staff panicked as the issue of logistics and supply became the debated argument from the moment the sun rose to the moment the sun fell in the west. A heavy rationing on munitions and food-stuffs would become the norm in the first months of Xian's entry into the war. Some blamed the General Staff's lack of foresight, and some blamed the droughts in the south-east as the source of the rationing. Regardless of who was to blame, morale suffered as the portions became smaller and smaller and their gifted rounds fewer and fewer.

Civilian life also faced change with the coming war and the subsequent rationing. While ordinary life remained the same as it did a year prior in Beiqling, in the southern cities such as Changtan the price of grain skyrocketed and many Xianese civilians began resorting to other means to get food-stuffs such as bread and rice. Thus, the civilian and the soldier began to become equal in their fears for Xian's entry into the war...

A Xianese child-farmer scrounges for surviving, edible, crops during the drought of 1907.

Flulin Jazz

While morale already faced a crisis in Xian itself, in the Soroyan colonial capital of Flulin a new age of culture had begun. For those living the high life of the Flulin elite, the new music craze of Varian-influenced 'jazz' flooded night clubs and bars with it's new sound. The forerunner of this new 'Shidaiqu' music was Li Shiyun, known anti-nationalist activist and leader of a group of musicians and artists who wished to harmonize Varian and Faresian styles into a new golden age for both cultures. The regime in Beiqling viewed this differently however. Known nationalist and White Tiger sympathizer Jang Winghau decried the movement as the beginning of an 'age of decadence' in Xianese culture and that for Xian to survive she would have to 'stay the course against the Varian whale'.

Flulin, circa 1905

While the music was decried by the more hardliners in the Liberation Council, the populace embraced Shidaiqu and the sound of traditional Xianese folk music mixed with Deltoran saxophones or Kalpian trumpets filled the streets of Changtan and other southern cities even with the war drawing near. It was even suspected the President-General had grown a soft-spot for the music, though largely due to the Madame Ye Liu's rather open sympathy for Varian art and culture.

Eastern Edge of the Byrnian Channel

The RSN Raku and RSN Talik steamed into Byrnia amidst the bussle of war preparations. The old battleships were of pre-20th century design and certainly not impressive alongside the heavily modernized Survaekom navy. But they were still battleships, and their size and firepower was more than sufficient to inflict harm on any opponent who confronted them.

The Sumayan fleet was met by the Survaekom light cruiser ISV Stoic. It too was a pre-20th century design, of the Wave class marked by its characteristic tight row of short smokestacks, belching clouds as it steamed along. Aboard were a handful of Surv-Vyaez officers and translators, the first group of many assigned with facilitating coordination between the two navies for joint operations. This group would have the honor of boarding the Sumayan flagship Raku, and they would begin their work by helping guide the Sumayan fleet towards Foedinei.

The Survaekom cruiser and the Sumaya flagship carefully maneuvered themselves parallel to one another and cut their engines, allowing the Surv-Vyaez party to board. There were two older men in gold-buttoned white uniforms and peaked caps, and four younger marines in thick dark blue coats accompanying them. They were all Byrnian.

A small delegation of Sumayan bridge officers waited patiently on the wind-swept deck, stoic in the face of buffeting and sea-spray. Despite Sumaya's nativist customs their naval uniforms were precisely in line with Varian designs: trim grey cloth, thick and warm against the cold and imaculately designed. There was, however, one variation: nearly a third of the Raku's crew were female, including her captain, who bowed bruskly.

"Welcome to the RSN Raku." She greeted them formally. "I am Captain Antiya Batao. This is my First Officer Goa Masu, and this is Ensign Fara. She's fluent in Survaekom, Byrnian and Kalpian as well as her native tongue. I've assigned her to serve as your adjutant while aboard the ship. The other captains are aboard their own ships, but will be joining us shortly."

Both of the Byrnian officers bowed politely to the Captain and the First Officer. One of the men, larger than the other and with a full beard, took charge of greeting the Sumayans . "A pleasure and an honor to meet you, Captain Batao, First Officer Masu, and Ensign Fara" he began in well-practiced Sumayan. "I am Captain Huj Idraesu, designated translator for the Surv-Vyaez coordinating delegation to the RSN Raku. My superior beside me is Fleet Major Usynyl Jaou."

He gestured gently towards Jaou, distinguishable by his three-starred cap, lankier figure, and clean shave. The Fleet Major dutifully nodded and offered the Sumayans an "Aedadil," the standard Survaekom greeting.

"Honorable hosts," Captain Huj continued, "with your permission we will accompany you to your bridge and begin our mission without delay."

Batao Saluted the elderly Major as she would any other superior, speaking to the man rather than the translator. "I hear you'll be in charge of this squadron for the duration of our tour in the Inner Sea. An honor to meet you in person. If you'll follow me it is this way to the bridge."

The Raku's bridge was relatively cramped: a tightly packed mix of navigational and relay equipment surrounded by solid steel walls. Without a furnace or insulation the room was chilly in the relatively cold waters of the Byrnian Channel; personal comforts took a distant second place next to functionality. A number of ovoid windows overlooked the ship's deck from all angels, providing an excellent view of the ship's multitudous turrets.

The two Survaekom officers left the marines on deck, where they mostly kept to themselves. Every now and then they tried what little Sumayan they knew on the crew members, hoping to strike up an idle conversation at least. As natives of Byrnia, where women had a long history of participation in war despite the more patriarchal bent of their Khaitis rulers, the soldiers were a little surprised but not disturbed by the ship's unfamiliar gender ratio. After all, the prestigious Byrnian Guard was almost half comprised of women, in line with its long tradition.

Meanwhile, the Fleet Major and the Captain exchanged words in Byrnian as they entered the bridge. Usynyl was pleased with the room's utilitarian air and they clear view of the decks and waters, a sentiment Huj was quick to pass along.

"The Fleet Major is impressed with the design of the Raku's bridge. The good view will make it easier for him to identify flag signals from the Surv-Vyaez and pass them onto me for translation."

"I appreciate the compliment." She replied formally. "I've instructed our own flag officers to expect company at their posts. Your flagmen will have a full run of the ship. Our main signal spires runs along the postern spine of the ship, just past that door." She tipped her head towards one of the steel, oval doors leading out of the bridge.

"Excellent," Captain Huj translated for his superior. "We will have our flagmen integrated into your unit shortly, after we arrive in the Port of Foedinei. There we will also send delegations to your sister vessels and conduct some basic joint training, but we will not stay longer than a few days before setting out on campaign. Do you believe your crew is sufficiently prepared for such a rapid time-table?"

"Serving on a battleship is an honor. I can vouch for every one of my crew; they are the best."

"We are honored to serve alongside such a capable crew of officers and sailors. You do justice and good service to the cause of the Imperial Restoration, the cause of both our nations. Aed willing, we will bring victory to our homelands, glory to our lieges, and ruin to our enemies on the high seas." The Fleet Major was smiling triumphantly, as if victory were already at hand, but the Captain's expression remained level. Huj had hope that matters would go as smoothly as both Captain Batao and Major Usynyl seemed to predict, but he was not one to celebrate before the challenge had even started.

"We are at your service Major." The captain kept a pleasant but neutral tone. She wanted victory as well, but her motivations were different. They fought here so that they could bring the fight to their enemies, rather than waiting for them to strike. If Survaek could secure the all-important Byrnian channel, Societatem would have no easy passage to the East.

Major Usynyl offered another bow to his Sumayan counterparts in recognition of their pledge. Huj continued to translate his words. "Now that we have seen the bridge, we know where we will be spending most of our time aboard the Raku. But, it would certainly be helpful for us to acquaint ourselves with the rest of the ship. Would you, noble Captain and First Officer, be so kind as to give us a tour of this fine vessel?"

"Of course. Shall we begin with your quarters? The Raku was designed to be a flagship; the fleet officer's suite is yours."

"You have our thanks and appreciation for your hospitality," the Major spoke with a polite node and a motion towards his counterparts. He paused briefly to allow Huj to translate before continuing, "Lead the way, comrades."

Age of Imperialism

End of May, 1907

A great war had begun. A Terrible War. Though only in it's first month, casualties ran rampant. Fighting Sarelia and Serranthia prevailed with only precursory mobilizations of troops on the home front. Varius was a powder keg with a burning fuse. The cool spring that persisted through May faded rapidly, and on June 1st a rampant heat streak caught most of Eastern Varius in it's wake. Men in huddled trenches baked under a callous sun.

Empire of Zellonia

May:
The King looked through countless newspapers of the war and smiled this would be the perfect time to reinvigorate the economy of Zellonia. While Zellonia may no longer have a Grand Armada or Large Army. Being one of the few neutral nations in the world brings new opportunities. Already he has got letter of countries requesting money, supplies and ships. He told the appropriate Ministers such as the Minister of the Navy Hagrefurd Humming who would prepare shipping lanes and get the navy ready to protect supply ships. Along with Minister of Industry Darby Boregard who would speak to factory owners and dock workers on what shall be produced. Though not everyone was satisfied such as the Supreme General Reginald Goring who knew the army would take a backseat even though there was a large and terrible war and we were already vulnerable.

Early June:
After nearly a month of preparations the miniters and royalty saw off their supply ships and people celebrated for money would begin flowing and Zellonia would rise again. Afterwards the ministers had a nice ball hosted by the King and everyone was satisfied even the Supreme Commander for some unknown reasons. Though their were rumors of new weapons in development that could prove very deadly.

Foedinei, circa 1905.

Immediately after the final meeting of the Liberation Council, Foreign Minister Shiu Fuhua was once again sent away from the Xianese homeland to the capital of the Grand Survaek Empire. However, the Foreign Minister brought with him a swath of younger NCOs in training. These soldiers were predominantly sergeants and corporals, warrant officers designated for command in the future. Upon arrival aboard a civillian vessel, Fuhua and these officers were brought to one of the many garrison regiments in training at the Imperial Academy of Foedinei.

The first sights of interest to the Xianese military delegation were the defenses being prepared around the city, visible from the Port as well as the Academy. Trenchworks, sandbags, and even barbed wire marked strategic locations in the outskirts of the Survaekom capital. For the moment the defenses were garrisoned only by a skeleton crew, but the number of machine-guns and supporting artillery pieces at each of the strong-points suggested that there were plenty more soldiers nearby.

One battalion of such soldiers was training in the fields near the Academy when Minister Fuhua and his compatriots arrived. They were greeted by the unit's captain, whose rank was apparent only from his pauldrons and small markings on his helmet. He was a short but strongly-built man with weathered copper skin and a thick moustache.

"Greetings, you must be Foreign Minister Shiu Fuhua from the Xian Republic," he began. "Welcome to Foedinei, and to the 451st Surv-Akur General Infantry Battalion. Will you or your companions be needing refreshments or shade?"

"Yes, yes. After our travel refreshments would be most appreciated." The Foreign Minister stated simply, giving a short smile to the captain as he looked out onto the field.

The Xianese officers took their own respective positions around the Minister, who had removed his glasses to wipe the dust that seemed to constantly blow since his arrival. The storms that afflicted the soldiers in the west evidently was beginning to move eastward as well.

The captain nodded to the Xianese and motioned towards an aide, who promptly set off for a collection of tents on the South end of the field.

"Tell me captain, what regiment is out on the field now? Yours I presume?" Mister Fuhua asked, his bifocals now once again upon his aged and pale visage. It was evident that the Minister was not adjusted to the heat of the capital, however Fuhua was a man of the old guard. He would surely adjust.

"Only a battalion, not a full regiment I'm afraid," the captain replied with a smirk.

Fuhua chuckled, "Of course, my apologies captain. I'm still quite used to seeing the Xianese regiments training in Beiqling. I dare say I forgot where all the Survaekom men had gone!". The Minister gave another laugh as he looked out again towards the men out on field. "Will you be instructing this battalion today, captain?"

The officer heartily joined in the Foreign Minister's laughter. He was relieved to see that Fuhua knew how to be of good humor, and in the Survaekom language too! "First I suppose I ought to give you my name. Captain Waldei Gjois, commander of the 451st. I will indeed be training the men here today. And if you don't mind staying a while, once we're done with the first round of exercises we'll be marching farther from the city into the steppe, for a proper set of exercises with the entire 88th Regiment. My boys here aren't gree anymore, and it's time they learn to work in cohesion with the other battalions."

"If these men can handle the heat then so can I. We will of course be staying for the full exercise, and I highly anticipate seeing how your men perform Captain Gjois. Now, where in the Divines is that aide?" Fuhua turned from the field, looking towards the academy again for a moment. "Tell that boy I'll be demanding him on the field if this heat keeps up!" Fuhua continued, giving another smile.

Soldiers of the 88th Regiment being lead by Captain Gjois, circa 1908.

While the Foreign Minister and the Captain conversed, the Xianese officers had attentatively begun watching the Survaekom soldiers. Even though the actual excercises had yet to begin, most of these men had never left their respective villages and towns, much less Faresia. The sight of the significantly taller Survaekom men was a sight to be seen for them.

After a few minutes of banter among the officers, the aide finally returned with a dozen companions. They had brought out chairs and a table for the delegation, along with large parasols. And, of course, two of them carried refreshments: A large plate of delicately-prepared cold meats, another plate with olives and dates and all manner of tasty fruits, a large basket of bread, and several bowls of spiced oils.

The Xianese delegation, predominantly the young officers, was quick to swarmp the plates of food that had been brought out from the academy. Mister Fuhua however took only a glass of water and a seat at the head of the table, waiting for the excercises to begin.

Captain Gjois smiled at the young Xianese men competing for the dishes before they had even been set on the table. He turned to the more restrained, elderly Minister. "Your men have a good appetite, and no shortage of energy it seems even after the long voyage! It'll serve them well on the field: Motivation to steal the enemy's rations is as good as any!" He chuckled.

Meanwhile, in the field, the battalion stood motionless in neat ranks, all facing the captain. Besides the occasional whisper and murmur, they were silent, presenting a dignified formation to represent the Surv-Akur to the foreign visitors. The captain wouldn't leave them hanging too long, though. He rose from his seat as soon as the visitors all seemed comfortable enough, making his way to the soldiers with a proud smile on his face.

"Excellent display of good order, men! But our guests are here to observe more than your uniforms! Stagger yourselves and present facing West!" Immediately the Surv-Akur ranks broke and spread out, only to reform in a much looser formation facing to the left of the observers. Further West lay a field of target dummies and sandbags.

"We're under attack!" Gjois barked. "Take cover and return fire!" The soldiers crouched, went prone, or dove to whatever nearby barriers they could find. Rifle cracks sounded seconds after the shout as the mostly-trained regulars aimed and fired at their wooden adversaries. Some groups, instead of firing, rushed South to tents and came back with machine-guns and ammunition belts. Like clockwork the teams deployed and loaded their machines in a matter of ten to fifteen seconds each, before unloading their firepower on the dummies.

"CEASE FIRE!" the captain roared after some forty seconds, signaling the end of the staged firefight. Before the war the fire exercises would have gone on longer, but nowadays munitions were precious commodities not to be wasted. Seemingly pleased, the commanding officer strode towards the "enemy" camp.

"Aed be praised, you little mongrels managed to hit all of them!" he beamed, but only for a moment. Suddenly his expression turned stern, sour even. "But, you're still taking too long! Machine-guns should have been ready at least ten seconds earlier! If it comes to combat, you won't have time to waltz over to the tents and back like you're on a stroll through the park!" Gjois paused a moment, stroking his moustache with a single hand. "You lot need your muscles trained better! Twenty laps around the Academy, and any man not back in twenty minutes gives me his rations! Understood?!"

"YES SIR!" the battalion replied in unison, setting out for their run briskly and in good order. Captain Gjois shook his head slowly as he walked back to the Xianese delegates' table.

"The lads have the order and the mechanics of it all together, but they need more speed before they can join the main army! I figure more exercise will boost their fitness, and from there their speed will improve too. But what are your opinions, good officers of the Xian Republic?"

The Xianese officers sat in silence for a moment. Fuhua himself turned to look towards his own delegation. This was their time to show themselves as officers. From the back, a scrawny young officer, looking no older than twenty spoke up above the pondering men.

"Their speed isn't the issue sir. They're struggling with the belt loaded rounds."

The entire delegation turned towards the officer who spoke, some with looks of shock at the fact that someone would disagree with the captain's conclusion about his own battalion.

"In my village, Chongshi, we trained using the same model of machine guns on banana trees. It doesn't matter how fast you can get the gun in place, if you can't load the belt the weapon's useless sir. I recommend exercises on loading sir. It's the same concept of speed training we use."

After a moment of silence between the delegation the Xianese-Survaekom translator repeated what the young officer had said. Fuhua finishing with an immediate apology over the officer's wording.

"These men aren't used to the proper behaviors and attitudes we use in addressing superiors just yet Captain Gjois, I apologize for his mannerisms."

Captain Gjois raised an eyebrow as the translator interpreted the young man's words and seemed ready to say something in response, but waited for Fuhua to finish his apology first.

"Your apology is accepted," he acknowledged to his esteemed guest, before turning to face the upstart lower officer. "I didn't have an issue with how they were loading the guns. Fact is they're getting to the tents and back too slow. But...it never hurts to load even faster. Why don't you demonstrate the speed training you practiced in your village, for the benefit of the whole battalion?" He grinned wryly. It was a win-win scenario for him: Either the exercise had merit and the Surv-Akur would benefit -with Gjois taking the credit of course- or the officer would be shamed for his insolence.

Minister Fuhua leaned back and gestured for some of the officers to fetch a machine gun and a belt. Within moments two young men rushed off towards the same tents that the Survaekom regulars had gotten their own weapons from minutes prior. The scrawny officer nodded, stepping up to the table next to Fuhua and Captain Gjois. The aides that had originally brought all the oils, spices, and other assorted foods were quick to clear a space for the large gun as the other officers returned from the tent, one carrying the ammunition belt and the other the gun itself.

Seeing that the officer was going to make his demonstration soon, the captain stood up and shouted to his battalion. "Soldiers of the 451st! Cease your running and gather in the field!"

With a small smile the scrawny officer adjusted his uniform and cracked his knuckles in mock preperation as the gun was placed in front of him. Fuhua leaned forward and watched closely as the young man prepared himself. The last thing this gathering needed was tensions to rise.

By now, most of the unit's three-hundred soldiers had returned to the field, gathering around to watch the foreigner manning an Ishui Model 11.

"Our guest here has most kindly offered to demonstrate a technique for loading the machine-gun belts more quickly! Watch carefully!"

The young officer stood for a moment, his eyes following the Survaekom men as they gathered. He didn't know what the Captain had said, but he presumed it was for him to demonstrate. He took a breath and immediately went to work. He even spoke as he began unrolling the cloth-belt.

"In my village, we would do little competitions to see who could unroll these things faster. The trick is not letting the rounds get stuck onto the cloth, if they do you'll have a jam in the gun itself and it takes awhile to unjam these things."

Within a matter of five or so seconds the roll had been undone and placed onto the table, then the officer quickly slid the cloth loader through the 'magizine' and clipped it onto the weapon. The entire process taking no more than nine to ten seconds.

Captain Waldei Gjois nodded at the young officer, and then looked back to his soldiers. "Impressive! Now that is the way to load an Ishui 11! Instead of laps, I want you all to drill by following this man's technique until fifteen o'clock. Designated gunners first, but I want everyone in the battalion knowing how to load an Ishui in no more than ten seconds! You'll be tested tomorrow! Understood?!"

"Yes sir!" came the scatter of replies, less unified than before after their run and witnessing a foreigner best most of them at using their own nation's gun.

The captain turned his gaze to face the translator. "Inform your comrade officer that he is to demonstrate proper technique for my soldiers for the next two and a half hours. After that, we will march West for the regimental training camp."

The translator nodded, repeating the captain's words to the now beaming young officer. Minister Fuhua leaned back in his chair, giving a small smile.

"It's going to be quite an interesting afternoon I believe, Captain Gjois."

The captain took a few steps back to the table and sat comfortably in his chair. He looked to the old man with something between a smirk and a smile. "It will, Minister Fuhua. It will."

AGE OF IMPERIALISM
June, 1907

June 16th
Preliminary bombardments from the Grand Survaek Empire and the Republic of Deltora in the Eerkhbad Gap get underway.

June 17th
Reinforcements from the Survaekom 1st Army Group and 2nd Army Group begin filtering in from the flanks of trench lines to fall in on the beleaguered 6th Infantry Division. The fighting intensifies, with mid range bombardments and light machine gun fire to halt probing attacks.

June 18th
Following the declaration of war between Empire of Anvegad and the Sociatatem the Anvo-Deltoran border remains silent, with both great nations remaining starkly on the offense--much to the chagrin of the Anvegadian people, who were promised conquest with their joining of the Imperial Restoration.

June 19th
Operation Morning Star begins at dawn, with the Anvegdian 1st Field Army under General Korso Markham crossing the border into Murenheidt. They advanced 45 kilometers before reaching resistance at Hadden, though it was small and putrid. So puny were the 40,000 regulars at Hadden that the secondary operations were never called into action, but rather the start of the Battle of Hadden, a trench action that run half the width of Murenheidt.

June 20th
The Battle of the Eerkhbad Gap begins as 40,000+ Deltorans from the 8th and 9th Infantry Division push into the gap, hoping to expose it's weaknesses before the Survaekoms can reinforce. The Third Army Group, finally untangled from the logistical mess at Arkhaer moves northwest and hits the exposed attack head on. The Battle of the Eerkhad Gaps begins in proper.

June 23rd
Battle of the Eerkhad Gaps begins in proper. A meat grinder of the open desert, only hastily drawn trenches exist, with men and machine moving to and fro, fighting over long stretches of sand dunes. The Deltorans were encircled on three sides, with nearly a hundred thousand barreling down on them from the southeast.

June 24th
Kalpian Army units begin a tactical withdraw to Vierkas, preparing for evacuation while the Sumayan 1st Army advances, taking huge swathes of territory.

June 25th
A breakthrough at the Battle of Hadden sees the Murenheidtans outflanked, and 28,000 Murenheidtans surrender. They are taken into custody and the Anvegadian 1st Field Army continues to move north toward the capital.

June 27th
A near battle between the Deltoran Royal Navy and the Survaek Fleet nearly occurs around Faris in the Inland Sea, but as dusk approached the fleets broke off, fearful of a night time engagement.

June 28th
The Southern Army Group of the Xian Clique reaches Flulin of Soroyan Faresia without a shot fired, taking the entire region in a matter of two weeks marching.

June 30th
The 1st Western Guard of the Grand Survaek Empire marches west into Murenheidt, though sparsely populated, they begin claiming huge amounts of territory.

The Northern Army Group of the Xian Clique begins a minor offensive against the Kedris region of Soroyan Faresia. The Kedris Campaign starts, with minor probing attacks that run up against well entrenched colonial defenders.

Empire of Anvegad

Mureneheldt Front
Prince Ozo's Artillery
Artillery Position Bravo

"AND MAY TEN THOUSAND RABID DOGS TEAR THE DISEASED ASSHOLE WHO FUCKING DESIGNED THESE GUNS!" Finished cursing the artillerist as he gave a final resounding kick against the gun assembly of the wrecked heavy howitzer that had unceremoniously suffered a shell cook-off just an hour ago. The blood stains of the crew that had lost life and limb manning the gun were still evident as the sole intact survivor of the gun crew began a new line of curses in front of the pair of officers that were conducting an inspection of the artillery position.

"As you can see sir the new artillerypieces are less than satisfactory." Translated the lieutenant standing by Major Mannheim. "We're barely a month into this campaign and we're down half a Grand Battery from shell cook-offs, recoil compensatory malfunctions, rangefinder breakages, and poorly manufactured shells. Captain Lente ordered another seven pulled off the line for intensive inspection.

"Any clues why?" Inquired the major, idly listening to the latest string of profanity out of the artillerist. Quite an impressive vocabulary really. "By the nature of the string of events and the lack of enemy artillery, I presume its on our side of things."

"As far as we can tell, all the bad parts came from the Clovis Armory. No telling for certain if that is the case in all incidences, but-"

"But its a start. I'll put a investigation order in." The major sighed. The artillery corps always had a history of dealing with unreliable guns dating back to the age of smooth-bore muzzle loaders. The modern industrial age was supposed to put an end to that, yet here they were again. "At least all the heirloom pieces are still functional."

"The way the men worship their assigned guns? They discipline eachother for not taking cannon maintenance seriously, sir. If there are any future problems, it won't be because our gunners are slacking off."

"Good to hear, because we're pushing forward." The major said, turning to light a cigarette and think on how this was going to affect the battlegroup's next moves. "We're marching on the capital and we're going to need every gun piece we got if they decide to put up a fight even after all the prisoners we took."

"Aye sir. What ammo order should I tell the men to bring? Are we expecting trench or urban fighting?"

"Light field guns are covering the trenches. Siege pieces are to carry incendiaries and high-explosive, leave the shrapnel, as much as possible. If the Mundies don't heed our three offers to surrender, Prince Ozo's artillery is to start hammering them until they start begging. The formal briefing will be tomorrow morning, but in light of these damn malfunctions I figured some advance notice was in order."

"Yes sir. Thank you sir." The lieutenant visibly hesitated for a moment before deciding to speak his mind. "You think it will come to that, sir? Shelling civilians?"

"I hope to hell not. The fact that these Mundies surrendered instead of fighting to the death means they arn't die-hards, and we honestly don't have anything personal against these people. But we don't make empty threats either, understood lieutenant?"

"Yes sir. I understand completely sir."

"Good. Now do something about that man. I think he's going to run out of air at that rate of profanity. Pity to lose such a strong-armed gunner because of some industrialist's incompetence. Now, onto the matter of these ranging issues we're having-"

House of Sovereigns
Army Communications Center

"Promises of conquest unfulfilled? I honestly can't believe we still have reporters still writing this garbage." Chairman Volkov grumbled as he perused a copy of a newspaper that had been struck down by the military press censors. Something of a guilty hobby of his, but also an exercise in understanding how the more dissident elements of society were thinking. A Chairman in his position had to keep an open perspective of things afterall, and it made a good way to kill time before he spoke to the Operations commanders about some updates to the political objectives (namely discussing measures on how to repurpose Murenheldt and Luckland assets they had scouted out thus far) and context to their operations once the lines were cleared. "I know the public isn't aware of the exact nature of our military deployments, but expecting conquest the exact minute of declaration of war? When did this start?"

"Probably when Volvakov keeps stalling on getting his damn army on the move to Luckland." Grumbled General Kislev as he paced the room filled with telephone and switchboard operators. "Damnation, the invasion was supposed to kick off a week ago. We were mobilized months ago. How the hell is he held up now? Alert me the minute you get a signal through!"

"It may actually be to our benefit he's held up." Commented Volkov, flipping to the page of comic sections that had been banned for various reasons. At least the quality of slanderous artists was rising, even if their messages were certainly blocked for good reason. "It would give Luckland more time to concentrate it's forces. Enable us to....what was the military phrase? Defeat in completion?"

"Er, something close mister Chairman. It would be useful in ensuring there arn't troops left behind to have to mop up in garrison and pacification actions, but there is such a thing as giving the enemy too much time to prepare."

"Of course. Of course." Volkov flipped through a few more pages, frowned at a particularly bad slide and briefly mused on the political pros and cons of starting to execute bad reporters again, and looked up once more at the large board depicting military movements. So far so good on the Murenheldt front, and Deltora was too busy with Survaek to bother raising trouble with Harkevich and the border legions. Everything was going almost too good besides the stalling of the Luckland invasion.

He honestly wasn't sure how to feel at that. Hesistancy cost them the colonies in Faresia, yet the costs of over-ambition were well shown in many previous wars. But for now, aggression would rule.

"Chairman, General. The lines are open. General Volvakov and Paragnosky are on lines two and seven."

"Very well. Put them both through." The Chairman tossed the banned newspaper to one of his guards for immediate burning as he sat down at the phone table. Back to work, back to conquering nations.
