Mathias is a puppy. A really over-sized puppy. He is more than enough excitement for one floor to handle. They will have to deal with his cooking experiments in their kitchen.

Every floor has one, massive kitchen which all of the students share.

Well, seeing as Sam only joined the school this year because of his traveling, and your character has been on that school for two years now, I would say it makes more sense if they didn't know eachother yet. Besides, meeting new people is fun!
