Yeah, the combat in RWBY this season hasn't been complex at all, it felt more like a mimic than a style of it's own. Littered with more gags and lines than before. Entertaining, and passes most certainly, but doesn't feel like the combat in the last volumes. The only fight that really stood out so far was Mercury vs Yang in my opinion.
Honestly they just need to focus on that choreography more. Is it impressive? Does it get the character's style across? Is it suitable for that situation? It also helps to try and think about a mind game between the combatants while the combat takes place, and simply play it out in their choreography.
