While revealing Lore on your characters and or potential plot spoilers can be a concern. If your characters have places they do frequent business, or work at. Or say run a corporation or have a important corporation involved with your character. Those should be discussed, not in spoiler revealing detail, but the public front of them. Things any general citizen would know.

Bob Of Bobcorp is the CEO. Or Bobcorp produces tape. Things of that nature. If Bob produces secret weapons for the Government no one needs to know that. Unless you get around to covering it in IC then why not add it into.your compiled Lore.

We don't need any spoilers. But knowing who runs what, what they typically manufacturer and who they've been involved with will help us from having six tech corporations that do the same thing.

Plus we need to be careful when we could possibly restrict other character builds and backgrounds. Maybe having somethings already established new players can tell what's been done and who controls what should I for instance want a character with a Greek God as a patron.

Well, this is what I get for not being on the forum for a single day.

I'm almost done with the Umbraxis post and moving to the War-Pulse post, but more importantly, I wanted to put my two cents on the idea of a lore thread.

I don't see a compendium of all the combined lores and histories being particularly useful if they just come out super long. If we have 10 pages just devoted to how magic works, what new player is going to go read 10 pages of just magic lore just to get caught up? Just looking at the characters that already exist, I'm absolutely sure most of these existing characters have years of backstory attached to them, my own characters included. I don't think a new player needs to read all about it to get a feel for what's going on. If they want to find out about extended histories, they should do it in game with their character, not wikipedia it to be entirely covered.

Instead, if we do have a separate thread or lore page it should be a cliff notes, not an encyclopedia. It should only include things that have happened in game, or relevant information to what has happened since the beginning of this game, nothing else. It should be something revolved around public knowledge, things you would be locked in a basement for 30 years to not know. Icon is a superhero, the city was attacked by demons, Pax Metahumana, gods like Ares have made an appearance on Earth, things that very clearly have been seen by the general public and have shaped the current, existing world. No rules on how magic works, no extended dossiers on existing factions, we have character backstories if people want to explore existing characters, we don't need a separate page or thread for that.

Like any good record, we should keep it short and to the point. As much as everyone wants to show how awesome their lore is, I don't feel the need to share what we don't have to. Especially for people like @Raptorman, who have gone to great lengths to keep his actions in the dark.

I think I have probably repeated what a few have said before me, but that's my thoughts on the matter.

SIDE NOTE: We might want to re-evaluate those original rules for the game...I feel like we may have bent those.

SECOND SIDE NOTE: I have some lore of my own that I'll send to @Fallenreaper, but I'll try to keep it concise.

@NeutralNexus Firstly I don't actually have ten pages dedicated to magic alone. It also includes Eva's Aunt, side characters and a few odds and ends. But yeah I do have a lot of it.

But I think we're confusing Lore with History. I don't think anyone is asking for mandatory Lore from anyone. Plus we're not asking for anything you haven't revealed in IC or are unwilling to reveal because of future spoilers.

I love crafting lore, a little too much perhaps. But it's a passion. All the little side characters that fill the world never to be seen again, or coffee shops that will appear once and be utterly destroyed. But that's my thing. Some of you may really be into Lore building and I'm sure we can fill novels with what we do have.

So I do agree that any Lore should be fairly important and not just filler. We get enough of that from Anime..

I never once assumed it was mandatory or said that anyone had to add anything at all if they didn't want to. Just to make this clear btw. However, as VAT elegantly put it, any lore that is shared is to prevent a Player that come into the game and want to add aspects without literally colliding with someone else's story or elements. Nothing discourages people then learning you do all the work, wrote up all the stuff create the PC idea, etc, and then either at the start or much further down the road, you learn your work directly clashes with someone else who was there before you. Then you got to untangle those wires when you could've known before hand and been prepared for it or even contacted the person over it. At least have some idea who to work with.

I used the term dictionary for a reason. It's not overly loaded with information, but rather the basic description of things. You don't get the whole detailed summary of what it exactly is, how it works, etc. You get bits like: Employee: Someone who works for another person. Nothing drastically detailed that it is like a manual you have to follow, but enough you're not left in the dark about its source. Any information that is detailed, personally, I feel should be told IC and discovered that way only. That means only the one that did the work actually knows about it and there's no other source but a brief comment, so when they mention it, that way they won't be thinking it's a name brand you're talking about.

I'm sorry if my excitement made it seem like I wanted more. Honestly, I'm enjoying the discussion and chatter, even reading the summaries because I feel like the world is actually starting to come alive for me.

The funny thing was, this whole idea actually started over my conversation with Tearstone about the city itself. Namely he was trying to figure out the city flavor for Lost Haven, mainly to gain a better understanding of the city itself and get soaked into the story. Something, I myself love doing when I read lore, information over the world, etc. We were talking and trying to determine things about it that any normal citizen would know, namely like a native like Justine.

Some questions came to mind, namely when I was thinking of where Jacqueline would keep her normal home outside the main city, which lead to some questions like this:

What neighbors are stereo typed as bad and why? Are they the cliche' graffiti type painted wall, with broken down schools and forgotten souls laid out to live or die? Or is it more subtle, where 'crimes' often happens and people never trust the police to do their jobs? Where is it located?

Which ones are wealthy, uptown neighborhoods? Where are they located at most commonly, do each of the districts have their What are some examples of the house and scenery?

Who's holding the power reigns, publicly and behind the scenes? I know about 2-3 villains, but I can't tell you clearly who's the biggest threat where or why. Or they are even known to the common civilian even as a rumor.

Is the city flavor based off New York, Boston or a Maine city like Bangor? Etc, etc, etc.

FacePunch already gave me some information, brief description over aspects I didn't realize he knew about like the Lost Haven police department, a newspaper group that is determined to seek out the truth (something Justine could be connected with), and few others I wished I had known earlier. It's not enough to tell me the complete spec of how they work but enough to give me a sense of how likely Racheli might encounter these elements and where, if she does. Which I enjoyed rather a lot.

Speaking of lore and colliding, I actually had that problem with @Dedonus when I first started out. I had no idea he was using the Greek gods when I first wrote up Polemos. I've had to change 99% of what I wanted to do with him.

Luckily, I seem to have found a decent storyline for Chike. Others might not be so well off.

I'm going to back to my corner and keep trying to figure out the city flavor of Lost Haven then. Though thank you @FacePunch for your Lore, some of the aspects were interesting and helped with that. I didn't know that was the public view on the Lost Haven police department until now, which will help me in the future btw. It also explains some stuff I was trying to understand.

I didn't want to respond to your last post because I wanted the discussion to wait until NMS gets online. However, I will address it here in light of your last post. What was striking about your last post was that, at least from how I read it, it seemed like you and Tearstone tried to figure out the "city flavor of Lost Haven" on your own, without asking anyone. While I cannot remember whether you asked these questions yet in the OOC, if you had not done so, you should have (again, I cannot remember if you did or not). Those are the types of questions you should ask in the OOC. While I cannot really answer that question because all of my characters are located outside of Lost Haven, Nitemare Shape should be able to answer that question.

Again, when in doubt, ask us! We don't bite!

No problem. Yeah, I've been trying to build that view up since I created the speedster twins. Nobody who knows anything trusts the cops.

We also don't want to get too lore heavy, it tends to scare off potential players and kind of goes against the spirit of the game, being a fun game that's easy to get into.

If we do some form of lore compilation, I think it should be more focused on summaries on things that have already happened and brief bios about companies, locations, and other important things instead of writing novels on lore that hasn't been used in game yet.

I really only plan on using 1-2 of the characters at a time. I like to have a bunch of characters with a large amount of variety, in case someone wants to do something, so I could have a reason to be involved with one character.

Well maybe we could run a simple format and general rules about Lore. See if the idea does take off.

Something like. Company - Poseidon Energy. RPer VATROU. Bio.. Or if there's no bio it could simply say ask RPer for details.

But off topic. Has anyone seen the Suicide Squad trailers? I'm not to thrilled about the movie but it could still surprise me..

Also Ash Vs the Evil Dead had it's season 1 finale. Has anyone here watched it? And what did you think of the show?
