The mages stationed in Orngat slowly began to realize that it would not go like the Second Mage War. Where the Holy Lands and Limgar were destroyed in order for New Engelica to grow. No this was a defensive war. And the battles they would fight would always be defensive. Meaning that for once, disciplined coordination was of utmost importance. Eléane continued to drill her mages during the down periods, when the skies seemed clear. Luckily the mages could also count on their gaining experience. In the meantime, their very presence was doing funny things with Orngat. The dwarves and humans might start noticing oddities like small lights in the water. The presence of mages of New Engelica was waking them up.

Turn 10 (This is a personal counter of turns I use)
The Darkness was pushing hard, but the Broken Empire would not fall, not to the monsters that crawled from the shadows. Bolstering the weak points of the coastal provinces, while continuing to hold the stronghold in the east, the Dwarves and Orcs braced themselves for the coming Darkness, wherever it came from. Gaining knowledge of their foe from allies far to the east, the Broken Empire began to tighten it's ties with the other surviving nations, preparing to send it's message out.
The Darkness would be driven back, and the Broken Empire would be the one to do it.

The weak sunlight that makes it through the swirling black clouds gathering above Alria shines on a much changed landscape. The very ground itself has been tainted by the Darkness, the land made sick and the oceans turning inky black, whatever the outcome of this desperate war, Alria will never be the same.
Facing the Darkness for the first time, New Engelica fights alongside the metal defenders of Orngat, facing screaming harpies in the skies above them as the Storm Tempest is once more summoned to the aid of the powerful nation. Those that remained in New Engelica can hardly believe the horrors that their brothers and sisters are facing on a foreign shore.
Desperately holding the line against the ever-pressing Darkness, Tushienia takes a serious blow in it's battle. Perhaps the nation's greatest strength, it's mastery of undead magics, wanes in the face of the Shadow as immensely powerful magics strip them of their powers. The undead will no longer rise to Tushienia's call, and the Darkness, sensing a moment of weakness, push forwards in greater numbers than ever before.
For the first time since the Darkness toppled the Great Alliance, a nation has taken the fight to the foul nightmares. The Broken Empire, hurling itself against the Shadow with a frenzy, pushes back the Darkness from a province in which it had settled just months before. They find the land twisted and nightmarish, but they claim the land, forges already being re-lit and defenses repaired in preparation for the inevitable retaliation.
The Kingdom of Zakol bursts into action, refusing to allow the waters to fall to the Darkness as they hurl almost their entire fleet in a desperate attempt to push the Shadow back from their vulnerable coasts. Armies march to the north, shoring up the defenses of their allies the Republic of Andinon while Zakol encounters the Darkness on land for the first time, easily driving them back.
Now doubt grateful of their allies coming aid, the Republic of Andinon continues to hold their lines against the Darkness, even as in shady workshops and libraries, the nation is gathering all information they can that will help them against their mortal foe. Perhaps some breakthrough will come from the studious Gnomes...
Pankra falls silent even as one of their islands are seized from them by the Darkness, their people slaughtered and villages razed to the ground.
As another island falls to the shadows, and the shifting shapes beneath the waters draw loser to the Republic of Outcasts, there can be no doubt that it will be under the weak summer sun that the nation will be truly tested, facing the Darkness for the first time. As the nations around them fall silent, and allies are far in the distance, it will soon come down to a desperate fight for survival.
Orngat faces the Darkness for the first time, and, aided greatly by their elven allies, manage to drive off the first contact, although there can be no doubt that, as the Shadow continues to push through the waters, the fight will not always be so easy. However, bolstered as they are by their two new-found allies, there is hope that they will hold.

“Phew! I got one!” Jonathan said, looking very pleased with himself as he came into his teacher’s chemistry lab.
“Hm? Got a what?” Penokio turned his head from the gunpowder mixture he was working on, mixing it with different things in order to change its properties for Orngat’s use, when he flinched seeing what Jonathan had brought in. In the boy’s hand was a small bottle of water, and in it a tiny shining something. That something was one of those spirits that had awakened by the mages of New Engelica upon arrival…!
“L-LET THAT OUT RIGHT NOW!” Penokio commanded with a startled voice, staring in fear at the really pleased Jonathan. The boy’s expression changed in surprise at the older and somewhat overweight teacher’s command.
“Eh? Why?” He asked, sounding innocent. Penokio answered while waving a terrified finger.
“B-BECAUSE! That’s the spirits the mages of New Engelica have been using as of late! It’s probably deeply sacrilegious of us to capture one, they could declare war on us for this! A-and, maybe others of its kind senses this one’s captivity, and will be coming here in force to save their friend…!” The engineer explained his fears of what they didn’t know, but Jonathan simply laughed.
“Oh, c’mon, nothing like that’s going to happen. Instead, let’s think of what we can do with this!” The boy said, bringing the bottle with the little spirit onto the table, staring at it in amazement. “I had it checked with some instruments. It contains some kind of energy. What if we’d be able to harness it for our own…?”
“… They’re magical creatures, Jonathan.” Penokio grumbled, troubled by how Jonathan never shared his fears. “We should let magical research be done by mages. We’re engineers. We deal with machines and real things.”
“But why is that?” Jonathan asked, turning his head to stare questioningly at Penokio. “Why would we have to be mages to use magical power-sources?” The young human turned his face back to the little glowing thing, smiling as he mused. “If we can find a way to stimulate the power of this little fellow by natural means, then the awesome power of magic could be indirectly harnessed, couldn’t it…?” Penokio shuddered at the thoughts which Jonathan was thinking. Those were dangerous thoughts. What would the mages of New Engelica think?
“I… really think you shouldn’t…” Penokio was about to…
“I wonder if they have genders? What do they eat? I’ll need to test things. If I figure out how they breed, I might be able to farm them. If I get them in greater numbers, I could perhaps get more of a result. Just imagine, ten thousand of these locked into a container, powering an engine… ‘Spirit Engine’. I wonder, will we be able to make something to have them shoot out their power? Then we could device ‘Spirit Cannons’, haha. Maybe I should go and ask the New Engelicans what they think of my theories?”
“Jonathan!” Penokio called out loudly with a frown at the young engineer, causing Jonathan to look at him with surprised eyes. “Be very wary with the line of thoughts you’re going through right now. Even if it would be successful, there is nothing telling that it would be more effective than the cannons and engines we already have. In addition, the mages might not take too kindly to what you’re doing to those which they might be considering their friends. You should focus on what we know we need. Orngat is under attack from the Darkness, the Order has not been able to hide that from us.” Indeed, the howling harpies and the sudden theft of privately owned ships at the ports had done that. But, Anton Evald had thoroughly explained the reason why those ships had been taken and told the public that the underwater enemy had been defeated for now.
“Although they’ve been very persuasive in telling us that they’re capable of keeping us safe, YOU, young engineer, should be doing everything in your power to come up with dependable methods of destroying the enemy. There will be a time for magical fantasy theories, but now is not the time. Now c’mon. We’re trying to develop bombs that will work underwater against the enemy fishes here.” Penokio grunted, turning back to the gunpowder he was working on. His strategy for discouraging the boy turned somewhat effective, as Jonathan felt doubt fill him, looking at the back of his teacher. He threw a sad glance at the glowing little spirit in the bottle, and sighed. Guess Orngat did need him.
… Though, the kid smirked. That didn’t mean he couldn’t have a pet project on his freetime…
They had been able to take out multiple of the enemy underwater monstrosities. They were huge, though apparently quite stupid. They had attacked anything right above them, meaning that by stealing all available civilian ships and making countless rafts out of left-over barrels and making the sea a garbage-dump of floating debris the enemy had attacked essentially nothing. Praise be the scouts that noticed this before the enemy had reached the shores, or the battle had been far more costly. Not a single Ironclad had been lost in the battle thanks to this strategy. They had to make the most of this.
[The info of how this battle was won would most likely have been shared with any ally reading this. The underwater creatures attack anything above them, so by filling the sea with wood, the monsters attacked these ships harmlessly allowing the Ironclads to target them without coming to harm themselves. The New Engelican mages summoned underwater familiars that engaged the enemy underwater too, so they were a great help. Haha.]
Now, they had dragged the corpses of the enemy monsters to shore. One would have been provided to the New Engelican mages if they wanted one to research on. All but one of the rest had been frozen, to be maintained and researched. The remaining one after that was now lying on a giant operating table in front of Zuth, the representative of health, as she glared at the giant corpse. She put on gloves, surrounded by countless others medical personnel, staring down at it.
“Alright. Let’s begin the operation. We need to learn how these things function.” And so it took place, a giant autopsy to learn about their new enemies. How their senses worked, what it had recently eaten, how its stomach worked, everything… everything they could possibly learn from these carcasses by delving deeper in them. As much as they could before it had completely rotted to pieces…!
Belden, Master Builder of the Order of Orngat, breathed out happily as he looked over the gathered machines east of Endorum. Yupp. This would go absolutely fine. As per the deal with the Broken Empire, in exchange for their assistance with defending the provinces of Orngat so would Orngat assist with the defense of the coast-line provinces of the Broken Empire. That was provinces #50 and #49. Now, the Empire would not be under attack from this direction quite yet, but those who are ready gain the benefits. Orngats were masters of Dwarven Defenses (the racial trait, that is).
No offense to the defense of the Broken Empire, as fellow dwarves Belden was sure they were excellent, but the Master Builder would take every chance he got to improve upon the constructions he could find. Maybe, possibly, he could even borrow the ports of the Broken Empire to bolster their navy, as he knew that the Broken Empire’s lack of navy could leave them exposed from the seas. “Heh-heh.” Belden smirked in front of his gathering of machines and workers. “C’mon, lads! We’ve got a coast to keep safe!” He turned and headed east for the Broken Empire, intending to honor the agreement which they had.

Mylori Firehammer let out a booming laugh as his Great Axe cut deep into the muscled sinews in the foul creatures shoulder. As the monster turned to try and lash out at the dwarf, he ducked beneath it's clawing talons and with almost a flourish, brought his weapons blade down on the creatures neck, silencing it's screeching as it's severed head fell to the ground, quickly followed by it's lifeless body. As he looked across the battlefield, the few remaining creatures desperately attempting to lift themselves into the air but being silenced one after the other. Feeling a sudden chill in the air, Mylori's smile faded, and he turned to face the Orc Warlock.
"Your machines served well today Dwarf"
Turning to look across the churned ground, where the metal warriors of two Dwarven nations now stood perfectly still, awaiting their next orders, Mylori allowed himself a smile.
"And your undead died tactically"
If there was any kind of emotion behind the still face of Warlock Thro'Gan, it did not show. Instead, the Orc simply turned it's inky black gaze out across the sea.
"They will come again, stronger. They will keep coming unless we can stem the tide"
Wiping the ichor from the blade of his Great Axe, Mylori too turned his gaze out across the waters.
"Let them come, I've barely whet my appetite for monster-hunting"
Tavirin Blackstone spat on the ground as he cut down the last of the foul gibbering creatures that had crawled out from the ground itself to fall upon the invading Broken Empire. But they were met with the fell magics of Warlocks and the steel of Dwarf and Machine alike, and none could stand before them. The ground itself was blackened and warped, alien to look upon, but they had already reclaimed a string of settlements, little more than rudimentary hill forts, but places from which to orchestrate a defense, and to light the forges.
At Tavirin's shoulder, Warlock Grugar'Tar was silent, flanked as ever by the Lichguard, their wicked blades coated in the inky blood of the creatures of Darkness. The two great figures, both regarded as the leader of their race, even among the council, did not need to speak to understand one another.
The Broken Empire, establishing a more serious battleline. With each province taken, new warriors could be raised to bring the fight to the Darkness, and even now Tavirin hoped that news of their victory was lighting the fires of hope in other nations. Bripiak was already mustering for war, preparing to push back the Shadow where they could.
In almost a hushed whisper, Grugar'Tar spoke.
"I can feel him. Dagar’Thuun. His power is unimaginable, but I can feel him. He's out there. If we can reach him, we could end this"
Tavirin turned to the Orc, face weary but stubborn,
"I'll cut the bastards head off myself for what he's done."

Province 15 It was good that Tushienia had come, because their magic had not. The skeletons that Andinon had been using to suffer the brute of their losses were no longer in play. Apparently the darkness had figured out how to counteract it. Of course they knew that the darkness could adapt, but they hadn't anticipated this much. Their infantry had been butchered while the ranged forces had been of little use against them. While Andinon was also adapting, they were doing it much slower. The darkness had much more resources and it was starting to show. With Necromancy failing Andinon it torn between turning to science or magic, but decides to rely on the magic that has kept them safe for so long, seeking to give the elements more physical form in the battle against the darkness.
Province 19 The fail of necromancy was unfortunately not isolated. Of course the line had still held, even against the ridiculous monsters they faced but it was growing more and more taxing. They had to push back and soon. Dirigibles were being sent into the closest darkness infested regions to see what forces lay there and whether sending an attack force would be suicide. The small pistols were now standard Harrier issue, much more effective than the lances used previously. It allowed them to strike harder from farther away. But it didn't warrant a reckless excursion into enemy territory. All in good time.

The push by the Darkness into Province 8 had cost lives, but not as many as it might have.
The full force of the dark horde had been denied by canyon that now spanned the length of the hostile boarder, a wound in the world that had been ripped open by great magics before the canyon itself had been pumped full of molten lava and magma in order to ensure that nothing would be able to travel between the provinces on foot. It had been an act of desperation but it had won the day and brought Duringis some much needed breathing room so that it could rest and retrain its forces so that it could defend itself properly.
There was still the risk of the harpies flying over to do some raiding, so to that end some of the forces in the area would be remaining to aid in repelling air assaults for the time being, but most of the forces were being ordered onto the trains to go elsewhere.
Even as the new trains arrived, word had spread throughout the military forces stationed in the fortress province of Province 7 that something big was about to go down.
They would be right one way or another.

Another successful battle. Though this time it’s victory had not that much to do with the aptitude of the mages of New Engelica. Eléane began to see how the monsters of the Darkness worked. They were a horde. Uncontrolled and without strategy. Resorting to basic instincts. The giant fishes, which the mages swiftly called Leviathans, were a testament to that. They were defeated by simply being lured in by rafts and confiscated ships. Even the harpies were driven by pure bloodlust. If any of them were smart they would have gone straight for the mages alone with their full force. But because they worked on primal instincts, survival was more important than success. Even the small force that still descended from the skies several months ago had scattered itself over the mechanical warriors. Turning that entire battle into a one sided slaughter. This revealed a great deal to Eléane.
It was also Eléane who took one Leviathan corpse. Their elementals helped drag the massive being on the shore. Where 5 War-Magi kept vigil. The giant fish radiated a black aura, testament of the Darkness’ power. She allowed her mind to wander sometimes. Day dreaming about how it would feel to wield such awesome power, to command such massive army of monstrous beasts. And according to many of her friends, she wasn’t the only one. It was power ever so seducing.
Aside from protecting the corpse of the Leviathan, most other mages kept to their drills and meditations. Though now every now and then one would descend towards a city center to buy special supplies and herbs. Dwarfs and men alike probably raised an eyebrow as a quite colorfully dressed person walked their streets. Often accompanied by a coyote made of dust and sand, or a small fiery red bird. Spirits that took extreme liking to their master and decided to remain their familiar. The orders were even stranger. Odd herbs or even worse, dead animals.

Lord Claymont sat at his desk most of his work actually finished for once which was rare, "Rahmas, Yotul?" his assistant spoke up "Lord Rahmas is busy in meetings with various officials & bankers they're growing concerned with something i'm sorry to say i missed what was the cause, & Priestess Yotul has returned to the grand cathedral to help train the acolyte Magi students".
Lord Claymont sighed rubbing his chin with thought "don't know what to do with this spare time now..." he thought in silence for a moment longer, "Ah that representative from Tushienia!, Artyom send a messenger to invite him to my favorite restaurant, i can treat him to the finest Zakolian cuisine this city has to offer & i can discuss some politics with him!". The servant bowed "As you wish sir!" before leaving the room.
Meanwhile...
At the Royal lion restaurant, "Chef, the fishing guild is asking for a small fortune per salmon, well alot more than usual... claiming the wars effecting the amount of fishermen & ships available or some such rubbish", "Pa! idiot, boi! juz get Z'e cheapest fish availabl'e an-sui con seasonn it E'avly, Zem noble'lies won'no Ze differan'ce!". The kitchen boy nodded running back out of the service door connecting to the street & took off back to the market.
((Appologies for my atrocious attempt as spelling french-like speech, lol.))
Ozma Torth & Grumret stood watching over their forces defensive formation around the new fortress-town having been alerted by forward scouts of approaching flying monsters from the south. After the last event of the enemy beast like hounds appearing & fleeing without much of a fight & it being seen as an enemy scouting mission, the forces stationed in mandalia were sure this was the darkness's big attack and had prepared to face the full brunt of what was to come.
The allied dirigibles were held in reserve as the airborne monsters approached from the horizon, & Zakols Artillery & Magi started hurling rock & flame into the distant flock that had been approaching them, Just managing to down a few at the extreme range when the flying creatures circled around and flew back off in the direction they had come from just like the hounds before.
Quarter of an hour later General Venn appeared next to Ozma & Grumret "What was that?!, again!, they just left again?!" The elderly officer Grumret snorted at Venns outburst "You say that like it's a bad thing?". Venn gave side-way glance that could kill towards Grumret but before she could start arguing Ozma intervened "It can't be good regardless..." Both turned to look at Ozma as she spoke forgetting their impending verbal duel "testing our strength, probing our capabilities, biding their time waiting for us to weaken our guard perhaps?".
Grumret proudly speaks up "In that case we've shown them twice how solid our defense lines are, and given them a taste of our magi & artillery both times Ha!". General Venn after rolling her eyes from Grumrets proclamation, she noticed Ozma standing deep in thought staring at the horizon seemingly oblivious to anything Grumret or Venn said.
General Mokur marched along the Zakolian reserve infantry line with his entourage inspecting his troops as more of a formality to ensure their discipline but also kept checking the forward formation lines & the deployments of their allies forces, Mass ranks of undead skeletal warriors making up the allied forces vanguard as the rest of both armies finished their deployments on the field.
Having seen fit to get the newly assembled conscript infantry volunteers some combat experience Mokur had them placed up ahead just behind the allied vanguard forces in support so they could use their numbers to aid the front-line if pressured. Though Mokur himself was personally happy he wasn't standing near an undead warrior, ally or not...
Some time later the military deployments long since completed, Mokur could just make out the approaching enemies, at first thinking his eyes were playing tricks on him as swift shadow-like figures seemed to appear dark then almost translucent as they approached, only as they grew closer he realized his eye's were fine, when the forward scouts were swinging or shooting their weapons clean through the creatures before the shadows turned dark & solid enough to strike back with razor like claws only to fade again until they went to attack the next target.
Eventually the creatures began to approach the allied vanguard of undead, when as if almost in unison the skeletal infantry just crumbled over into dust, crashing into the earth without even engaging the enemy. General Mokur could only imagine what snarky comment High-priestess Yotul would of said at the sight of the dark magics failing on such a large scale had she been present. However such idle thoughts quickly faded as he remembered the conscript infantry in support of the now gone vanguard, all to late as the shadowy creatures wasted no time in closing the distance & carving into the massed ranks of the militia massacring them where they stood the panicked fight not lasting long as they tried to fight back before the handful of survivors fled as their units had been destroyed in the chaos.
Within moments the creatures of darkness swiftly charged into the second infantry line which was a combined mix of Andinon's & Zakol's light & heavy infantry. The Bloody fight growing intense as the infantry had to try striking the creatures when they fazed into a solid form for an attack making an already difficult fight all the harder. The second infantry line began to buckle due to the desperate & bloody fighting.
General Mokur quickly looked to his lines flanks and noticed Andinon was moving all their reserves forward to help the second line from breaking all together & followed suit as he lead the Zakolian Infantry reserves into the Frey as well. The front lines became more of a meat-grinder in the frenzied combat that raged on as masses of infantry poured in desperately trying to beat the creatures of darkness back.
After what seemed like hours later, the allied forces managed to strike down all of these unholy creatures as they simply dissipated into nothing when they died. Having dispatched the creatures at considerable cost the allied forces of Andinon & Zakol eventually emerged victorious but found no celebration as in the aftermath of the carnage only their own fallen could be seen littering the battlefield.
Zakols military forces under the command of their nations monarch Princess Yui Wolph herself had arrived in the province to assist their Andinon allies.
Not long afterwards having received word from advanced scouts of large monstrous creatures slowly lumbering across the provinces boarder, both forces discussed a strategy to deal with the creatures, Zakol's forces being mostly held in reserve to the rear due to their abundance of infantry and lack of light cavalry & heavy artillery in the province to assist with the overall devised strategy that was decided upon.
((Note:A small fact that remained undivulged to their allies, Zakol's lack of new artillery pieces was due to several issues, one being their rush to mobilize troop numbers saw that many craftsmen & skilled laborers from the various towns & cities were recruited into military service, While others & engineers were diverted to assist in the construction of the allied trains & extensive rail systems, and what was left of them were committed to hurriedly constructing new warships in a desperate attempt to continue holding their nations surrounding waters, or helping in the research & prototypes of their nations research efforts. In all Zakol is starting to suffer from a skilled labor shortage due to war-time demands.))
Princess Yui Wolph watched as the final preparations were finished their allies artillery, light cavalry, magi, arquebus troops, dirigibles & raised undead archers mobilized to various positions across the battlefield, Zakol assisting by committing some units of infantry to carryout sapper works digging pitfalls & trenches infront of the raised allied artillery platforms on the hillside. Additionally the Zakolian war-magi Lucretia Arnet also, after generously being given command of several Gnome war-magi courtesy of Andinon, stationed herself near the artillery & lead the magi in using earth magics to create natural creators, trenches & pits in the distance infront of the approaching giant creatures in an effort to help slow them down to buy time for the allied ranged infantry & artillery to inflict some damage, while Zakol continued to manually finish digging near the hillside.
Completely unaware of what occurred in the neighboring allied province, misfortune repeated itself as the allied skeletal archers that had been raised, collapsed over & smashed to dust back into the ground leaving previously occupied ranged platforms vacant on the hillside, the sight of which surprised the allied forces.
Despite the abrupt loss of the numerous archers the battle plan was still holding steady, the giant creatures were being lured away from the hillside by Andinon's light cavalry & mobile arquebussers who were being swiftly pulled away to reload by a dedicated group of their light cavalry. Andinon's mobile forces keeping the creatures attention but staying safely out of their range.
Princess Yui watched the well organised & clockwork-like back & forth of Andinon's ranged infantry & cavalry, then looked up to be momentarily amazed by the flying machines (she'd only heard about them) that swooped overhead towards the large creatures as Andinon committed their dirigibles trying to assist their mobile ground forces & inflict what damage they could on the heavily armored giants still some distance from the hill.
Moments later Andinon's artillery was ready every one of them carefully aimed at the large creatures, they were only delayed by a slight pause as signalers waved some message with flags repeatedly until the dirigibles promptly elevated themselves a bit higher, no sooner had they done so the allied artillery fired every shot hammering accurately into the creatures, there was a brief pause however when everyone noticed the large creatures didn't even stagger when hit by the heavy artillery shots. But everyone quickly snapped out of the pause when the creatures suddenly ignored the mobile force & turned to face the hill from where the artillery shots had been fired.
The allied arquebussers quickly form & fire off volleys at the creatures but as they were now closer it was clear to see the shots weren't making any impact on the large creatures armored bodies. following the shots some unfortunate overzealous but brave allied light cavalry charged in close to the looming creatures approaching the artillery in an attempt to regain their attention to lure them away, but one of the large creatures abruptly turned and lashed out with massive claw-like arms ripping through some of the light cavalry before resuming it's course as the few survivors pulled back.
Princess Yui growing concerned the closer the creatures get started unconsciously walking forward her elite guard following her as she did so, unknown to her at that moment the Ogre heavy infantry started looking towards each-other unsure if they were meant to follow & advance or stay, worrying harm may come to their leader as no order came to move. However just before a runner came over to ask the princess stopped continuing to watch the battle unfold as the Andinons artillery had almost finished reloading.
Luckily one of the closest monsters staggered almost tripping due to one of the dug trench lines, at the same time one of the allied artillery platforms fired it's shot hammering deep into the creature under it's armor at its shoulder joint, Quickly noticing this Lucretia Arnet shouted to any near by message-runner or free-hand to relay the information on these creatures new-found vulnerability, brief moments later Andinons artillery, dirigibles and relocated arquebussers unitedly concentrated their combined firepower at the creatures weakness causing it to fall dead crashing heavily into the ground, a massed cheer could be heard amidst the continued fighting which helped raise moral as the remaining creatures now closed on the hillside.
The second closest creature became Andinons next victim of retaliation, as one of its legs stumbled onto a pitfall causing it to stumble over, just in-time for Andinons combined ranged forces to exploit the creatures weakness as they focused their fire into it's shoulder joint, another mass cheer erupting as the second creature fell.
The second cheer is short lived however as the remaining creatures used the time to climb the hill closing the distance and as if on command went into a chaotic frenzy, wildly swinging, hammering, & smashing into the ground and the allied forces around or near them. Having lost the advantages of their position & distance all allied forces in front or around the artillery platforms, suddenly became panic stricken and began to retreat en-mass desperately trying to get away from these monstrous creatures going mad in battle as they lashed out climbing the hill.
With few options available in the situation all the allied reserves made one last all out effort against the enemy coming at them, Lucretia Arnet stopped amongst the retreating allies when she heard a loud bellowing horn echo through the air, an ogre & several gnomes stopping beside her all looking equally puzzled at each-other when a second & third bellowing horns echo'd across the battlefield even louder than the first had. They turned their attention to the top of the slope everyone had desperately been fleeing towards, to see a mass of large hulking bodies come charging down but expertly filtering past the fleeting allies.
Leading the Allied counter-charge was the heavy kragfang mounted cavalry who with reckless-abandon excitedly charged towards the giant creatures, their mounts expertly weaving & evading the giant creatures wild swings the beasts & riders cutting or hacking away at the monsters legs to bring them down so they could be better dealt with. The sight of the fearless heavy cavalry attacking these giant monsters towering above them rallied the allied forces into reforming behind the advancing reserve infantry who were still charging down to close the distance with the enemy. Occasional cheers from the charging Ogre infantry as every feat by the kragfang riders played out before them as they approached, one rider losing his mount to one of the creatures wild swings used the momentum of flying through the air with a large axe raised above his head as he swung down cutting into a gap in the monsters armor on its leg which caused it to buckle, the other riders hamming away at it's other leg causeing it to fall over altogether & the Axe-man rising atop it & swinging down repeatedly as if trying to hack the giants limb off by himself.
The heavy cavalry having both led the charge & toppled the giants to the ground in a heroic last-ditch display of defiance, pulled back to reorganize as the infantry clambered up the fallen enemies as they all began wildly attacking them & eventually killing every last one of the monsters as their giant corpses lay motionless on the hillside.
A massed cheer & celebration broke out more out of relief it was over, than a resounding victory uproar, still a win is a win, & seeing a huge armor-plated ogre dancing with a gnome would distract anyone from thoughts thinking otherwise.
After the party had settled down, and both forces began the cleanup & collecting their fallen comrades, Lucretia had managed to find Princess Yui who was standing surrounded by her elite guard, (who glared at Lucretia for the train incident as she approached) Princess Yui stood beside one of the fallen creatures intensely looking at it in thought. "Your highness?", recognizing the voice the princes replied "good to have you back Arnet" she turned to smile at Lucretia who now stood beside her "good to be back your highness" she gave a ceremonious bow before asking "is something the matter?" hinting at the dead creature.
The princess returned her attention to the monster "It's armor... this chitin it's covered in it's cracked but still solid." Lucretia nodded "Yes, we'll have to consult our allies and develop something to more easily counter such issues in future...". The Princess looked back confused for a moment "what- oh yes hmmm..." the princess looked around and pointed to the first one that fell "There!, that ones mostly intact secure it so our experts & our allies can inspect it for research or what have you...".
Lucretia was puzzled by her highness's reaction but before she could say anything the princess continued "I want the rest of these creatures stripped of their chitin & it all shipped back to Zakol!". The princess nodded to herself as she finished folding her arms. "You want us to harvest the chitin?" asked one of the elites who was also curious of the request the princess just nodded "It's so durable, even getting hit by artillery didn't effect them because of it, Imagine if we can learn to craft it or something... the armor we could make!, or if we can sharpen an edge on them the weapons we could make!". The Princess had a huge fierce grin across her face that would of put a demon to shame in comparison. Her elites all smiled knowing when the princess got like that there was little arguing with her when she'd decided on something.

As the leaves that still remain un-scorched by war fall from the trees, the air grows cold and the nights long and dark. With the approaching winter comes the Darkness once more, in heavy numbers and all across Alria, people suffer at the hands of the Shadow. And for the first time since the Great Alliance fell, reports of the Arch-Lich himself are spreading like wildfire through the surviving nations.
Once more standing beside their allies against the Darkness, New Engelica experiences the strength of the Darkness, but also begins to unravel weaknesses in the creatures that are sent against them. Aided by their conjured Familiars, the proud magical nation continues to act as a bulwark of hope against the onrushing foe, even as they begin to truly understand the truly dark magic’s that they face.
While other nations, when stripped of perhaps their greatest strength, would fall back behind their mighty walls, Tushienia rallies its forces and leads a charge into the land of Darkness, following the example of the Broken Empire far to the south, and driving out the Shadow from the land, although the price is high. Foul black clouds bring with them terrible new discoveries about the power of the Darkness, and this news will no doubt be spread among the proud nation’s many allies.
The Broken Empire once more march into the foul lands of the Shadow, aided by the Dolarti Tribesmen who, having fled into the Empire’s land for safety now march alongside their saviours to reclaim their stolen lands, just as they do as Bripiak too reclaims lost lands from the Darkness. To the North, aiding their fellow Dwarves of Orngat, the Darkness is beaten back by a contingent of War-Magi and Mechanical Warriors from the Empire, wiping out the scouting party of the Shadow.
For the Kingdom of Zakol, the summer was bloody and proved to any who doubted it, the pure power that the Darkness possesses. Standing with their allies to the North, Zakol helped beat back hideous, nightmarish creatures at a bloody cost, while in their own lands their defences are barely tested. A flood of refugees, warriors and civilians from the Krognar Tribe, barely make it to the safety of Zakol before their home is consumed by the Darkness.
Aided by their allies, the Republic of Andinon face indescribable horrors as they desperately fight to hold their lines against the unrelenting hordes of the Shadow that continue to test their defences time and time again. And yet even as they struggle below, the proud Gnomish Dirigibles take to the air and scout the lands of the Darkness, searching for some chink in the Shadows defence that they can exploit.
Beset by foul monsters of Darkness, the Republic of Outcasts fight desperately to hold back the Shadow, and succeed. And yet there is no time for celebration as the Darkness continues to encircles the island nation, another of the northern islands being consumed by the creatures, leaving the Republic far from allies and faced with an immensely powerful enemy.
Orngat, once more assailed by the Shadow, beats the creatures back again, aided by both of their trusted allies, the Elves of New Engelica and the Dwarves of the Broken Empire. Desperate to greater understand their foe, Orngat seeks to dissect the monsters they have already defeated, hoping to glean any kind of weaknesses that may aid them in the future.

News of the push into Darkness held territory had spread like wildfire. For the first time in years, the darkness had lost ground on the eastern front and it was Tushienia that had lead the charge. Newspapers hyped up the event as a turning point in the war, the first step to reclaiming the northern lands and an example for their neighbors to follow. The papers also mentioned victories against the darkness far to the south, through these were not as hyped up as Tushienia's own victory. After all, there were empires in the South that were only now encountering the darkness for the first time and they had been given plenty of foresight and information on the enemy that they would be facing long before they had encountered it. ............................................................. Out at Sea, aboard theExiled Hope
One of the first ships to be launched off of the Tushienia shipyards, the Exiled Hope was not exactly a ship designed for battle or war. It had been created and launched for one purpose and one purpose only; To sail to the Outcast Republic and assist in the evacuation that was taking place there. The crew strongly suspected that this would be nothing more then a death run; That by the time they arrived the Darkness would have consumed the waters around the islands, if not the islands themselves but if there was even a chance that they could get one more boat full of people off the island before it was too late, it was a risk that they had to take. All they could do now was keep sailing.
All over Tushienia a new kind of factory came to life, built with a single purpose in mind; To constructe the mighty war machines that were the mechanical walkers as quickly as possible in order to give the armed forces of Tushienia as much variety in its forces as possible. The creation of such machines was considered a sign by many that this first victory for the nation against the darkness was going to be the first of many.

Province 19 The shadows remain on the other side. But not for long. Last time they had this long of a reprieve the monsters that had come next were unprecedented in their ferocity and had barely been driven off. Who knows what would come next? It seemed every time the enemy came back they were stronger, smarter, had some new adaption or another. Yet even now Andinon couldn't risk an attack on the darkness. There was too much at stake. They would just have to hold them back until the other nations could gather their strength for a breakthrough. Tushenia was driving into the darkness with an army that consisted of most of its military force. All Andinon had to do was keep holding out, for however long was needed. The scouting forces that had been sent out either hadn't returned or had come back with precious little information. Further attempts were dismissed, it was no good sending good pilots to their deaths. Forces were constantly sent to shore up the borders. There was little else they could do.

There was little that Eléane herself could do, as others gathered the still bleeding bodies from between the cogs and gears. The enemy was defeated, but the cost was high. Massive pyres were built all along the shore line, and those whom had fallen were each given their own. Soon the afternoon turned to dusk, and finally all the bodies had been gathered. With the twilight sun setting, the remaining War-Magi began to play their song. From the braziers, small fire familiars jumped, and crossed the beach in grace to reach the pyres. Where they nestled themselves deep within the dry wood. Immediately the piles caught fire, and thus the dead were burned. A gentle southern wind blew the ashes into the sea. As much as most tried, some could not hold back a tear. They tried to remain strong. But they had lost many friends now.
One by one the mages scattered. Returning back to their camp. Eventually, only Eléane remained. Watching the embers glowing in the midnight blackness. There was no moon nor stars to be seen today. The only light came from the red smoldering and the blue lights in the sea. When she thought that no-one could see her, Eléane collapsed onto her knees. But she was not alone. “It’s not your fault you know.” Selina said. She was the sorceress who cast the Bright Flash. Eléane’s miracle of the past battle. “Nobody’s blaming you for what happened.” But Eléane would not have the kind words: “I failed as a commander. And they paid the price.” She could not take her eyes off the charcoal on the beach. “They died for their country.” “They died because of my father!” Eléane sneered back at Selina. “No. Your father is great, yes. But they fought for what Engelica stands for. A strong nation. Where we, mages, can live and do whatever we want. You forget, I too am a child of war. Every one of our generation is. We grew up without a father, a mother or both. We fought for New Engelica here. We fight at her borders and beyond to ensure that the people within the land don’t need to fear and cower every day.” A long silence fell. Eventually to be broken by Eléane. “Selina. I want you to listen to me. And only listen, until I am finished.”
The following day, several mages started their rituals on the beach where they fought the specter army. Some went towards the Leviathan, or at least the rotting carcass of it. Meditating around it, to drain it from whatever dark aura it still has left.

Research Dark magic
Turn 12 (This is a personal counter of turns I use)
There was a sudden loud sound as Jonathan ran through the lab, causing Penokio to stagger at the young one’s speed. The young engineer threw a fluid with numerous small glowing spirits into a bottle with some form of measurement device on it. Penokio frowned at that the kid was working in this yet again, yet… something caused him to hold up a little, looking at his extraordinary student. It was the serious look on his face. Normally, Jonathan was always so extremely happy-go-lucky and laughed everything off, but this…?
“What are you doing?” Penokio opted for the more cautious approach, inquiring to what his student was doing rather than try to say anything else. After all, Jonathan was the kind to always share what was on his mind. It was rather often something very reasonable. This time, however, there was something very odd he had to say.
“They reacted.” Jonathan said, gazing with focused eyes at the measurements. He threw in another fluid and the small sprites shivered in something.
“What?” Penokio asked, peeking over Jonathan’s shoulder and getting kind of interested himself as to what was going on.
“The spirits. They reacted to the magic.” Jonathan said, staring amazed at his development, weighting a few bottles and their contents, his teacher looking confused as to what the engineering genius was doing with what looked like a chemistry set which wouldn’t develop anything of use.
“And?” Penokio asked, hoping to get to the point. Jonathan wouldn’t get like this for anything normal. To his surprise, Jonathan suddenly bent down and threw a heap of good old dependable machine-parts right new to the delicate science experiment on the side. The boy started grabbing numerous of them, and started screwing them together. As far as Penokio could tell, he was building a weighting-machine of some kind…?
“Depending on the size of the magic and the distance or direction from the place of origin, I could combine their reactions with some good old Orngat machines and algorithms in order to be able to track the source.” Jonathan spoke quickly, as he threw glances at the shaking sprites and made adjustments to the device he was making, clearly intending to measure the reaction of the spirits…
“Track the what?” Penokio asked, now kind of wide-eyed, looking at his student in slight amazement. At the question, Jonathan suddenly paused his excited tinkering, taking numerous deep breaths. Having calmed down, the boy turned his head towards his teacher, his eyes wide and brimming with disbelief and excitement in equal amount, his sheer serious look causing his teacher to stagger back a little. And the words that followed…
“I can track him. I can track the Arch-Lich.”
… It was a project in its infancy, but the sheer scale of what they might be working on in the small room caused considerable silence as Jonathan and Penokio stared at one another in equal amazement, before they both quickly got to work to bring the boy’s vision to life…

1 Mechanical Warrior, 1 Ironclad and 1 Interceptor in each Orngat province.
Orngat has had a season to prepare docks in #50 to make Ironclads, and will recruit 1 such there. #49 will be able to do the same next turn.
The Tribesmen were wild and un-ordered, slipping into a berserk-like frenzy in battle, and it was this ferociousness that had won the respect of Tavirin. It had been those tribe warriors, who just seasons ago had been the Broken Empire's enemy, who had perhaps saved the nation's offensive. The magics of the Orcs, foulest Necromancy, had failed in the face of the Darkness. There had been no time to adapt another strategy, Tavirin had had to act on pure instincts, forming up the Mechanical Walkers and Warriors into a defensive line as the War-Magi struggled to control their power.
As the Darkness had smashed against the Broken Empire's lines, the danger of the line buckling under the unrelenting horde growing no matter what Tavirin did. As the situation grew more and more dire, horns of war blew across the battlefield and the wild riders of the tribes, the same warriors that had fled into the lands of the Broken Empire in the face of the oncoming Shadow, crashed into the flanks of the Darkness. Fighting with a frenzy, even the foul creatures of the Darkness fell underneath the warriors honed blades.
Invigorated by the arrival of their tribal allies, the Mechanical force of the Broken Empire, supported by the War-Magi, now wielding their Fire and newly learned Earth magic, hit hard against the Darkness, now in disarray. Shattering under the invading force, the Shadow went to run, but it had nowhere to flee, cut down wherever they turned.
As the tribes celebrated long into the night, great bonfires seeming to burn away the shadows that had encroached into the land as volatile alcohol washes away the horrors that they faced, Tavirin took a moment to step away from the celebrations.
Alone with his thoughts, the Forgelord looked out into the night. He had been foolish, the Broken Empire had relied too heavily on the Necromancy of the Orcs, and now that that magic was failing, the Empire was a shadow of it's former might. No more could the Empire be sure of the legions of undead marching in their name, now battles must be won once more by the flesh and steel that had forged the nation so many centuries ago.
Tavirin had seen the reports from across the Broken Empire, and he had felt a part of himself break down when he had seen that only a handful of the Hammerbearer's had survived the grinding conflicts that had consumed the Empire, and Alria as a whole. But that would change, in this new age, Tavirin would raise an army of great warriors that would deserve the name of the Broken Empire.
Turning back to the feasting, Tavirin was about to walk back and join the celebrations when he felt chills run down his spine and saw a dark figure also standing at the outskirts of the encampment. Recognizing Grugar'Tar, Tavirin wearily approached his ally, noticing that for the first time, the Warlock was not flanked by his Lichguard. As the Dwarf approached him, the Orc spoke.
"I was blind. We used our greatest power too often. These foul creatures adapt to whatever they face, that much is clear, we should have hidden our strengths, and now we are without Necromancy."
Tavirin was shocked, the Warlock's voice rang with an emotion that the Dwarf had never heard before in any Orc's voice, let alone one of the most powerful Warlocks. Stunned, Tavirin could barely string together a response.
"You couldn't have known"
"We did know Dwarf. We had heard rumors that this had happened to the nations in the East, but we were too proud, believing ourselves more powerful, too great to be affected by the Darkness' magics. But never again."
