So, Marlin collects and restores old books, historical documents and antiques, storing them all within a shop that can only be described as a 'nook'. While at the front of the shop he sells the latest bestsellers, most of his business is in the back: rare, non-Vale pieces are carefully documented and sold online, while he keeps the good stuff for himself under lock and key. To that extent, Marlin serves as caretaker of a collection of all the relics and magical items brought over from their original realm.

Appearance

Marlin stands somewhere in between 5'8" and 5'9", and the uncertainty comes from the overabundance of curls in his hair which makes him seem taller than he actually is. In fact, during his Bad Times™ (what he calls the period in which his magical addiction spiralled out of control) when he sheared off his messy mop, he seemed particularly small – thank the lord it's grown back in now, for the most part. His build is still recovering from the trials he put it through during this time: there is a distinct gauntness in his build that he struggled for a good year to shed that is not returning, and dark purple circles under his eyes betray long nights of insomnia. Once upon a time, with no pun intended, Marlin sported a healthy build and complexion and wasn't as deathly pale as he is now, though he was always on the skinnier, meeker side of things.

He dresses plainly. White t-shirts, flannel, coloured button-ups in some mundane, nonthreatening colour. Sometimes he can even be seen wearing sneakers (his excuses being that he is "down with the kids" or "never grew up") though usually a worn but no less respectable pair of Oxfords. Most of his clothes are stained in some way, shape or form by paint or torn by the thorns on the roses he likes to grow in his garden. Often oil paints and pastels and charcoal mark his skin, too, and Marlin's almost a stereotypical 'starving artist'.

To some extent, this leaves Marlin looking quite young for his age. In addition to his fashion sense, his wide doe eyes, blue, betray a certain innocence which probably doesn't exist in the first place; however, it seems like it does. Coupled with a charming, toothy and supposedly sincere smile, this marks him as quite handsome – in a nerdy, humble, bookish librarian sort of way. The whole effect is emphasised when he puts on his reading glasses and he suddenly becomes something out of the 1940s, a time before technology. Despite being a unrepentant hipster, he fits quite well in with mundane, non-magical society.

Overall? Marlin looks trustworthy and has that small-town aesthetic going on in his appearance.

Personality

Marlin runs a book and antique shop. Therefore, it's not entirely unexpected that he's an insufferable know-it-all, fond of reading and learning; possessing all sorts of obscure factual information and tidbits of general knowledge. Nothing is too small or useless to be beyond his notice – he's quite keen, observant. For example, he knows a lot of his regulars' names, and he has a spreadsheet in his head for every Vale he knows' favourite drink if (or when) they go to the bar. He's not a stalker, and he uses it for entirely benevolent purposes, because if he knows what people like – what they prefer to talk about, conversation starters – people will like him more.

Along the same lines, Marlin is a good listener, and pays attention to people when they're speaking to him, which often nets him a reputation as being friendly. He always pays his tab on time, and sometimes – if money isn't tight – he'll pick up someone else's too for generosity's sake, though only friends. He doesn't have many of them as he prefers a quiet life with the occasional relaxing drinking session on a Friday night (although "trips away" are becoming more frequent as he's back on the magic) so he treats those he still has with even more care, especially since they must see something in him despite the scandal that was his rather public spiral into addiction. He can be quite motherly, nagging others to eat or sleep or whatever he thinks will make them healthier and/or happier.

But not himself. Never himself. Marlin seems to forget that he is a person at times in between running the shop, going out for a few beers, doing his hobbies, fulfilling various handyman tasks in his apartment building... To that end he can be quite self-destructive, but even more than that is his denial of it all. If he's asked how he is, there's a lie on his lips before anything else, even to those closest to him. Marlin is very stoic, and plays his cards close to his chest. Naturally, bottling everything up inside isn't a very safe thing to do, especially when he has delusions that everything is hunky-dory and that he's not using and abusing magic, even after going 'cold turkey'.

He's also a bit of a sap. Lord only knows how many limited or special edition Peter Pan books he's bought over the years for his adoptive daughter.

History

Merlin – Court Magician of Camelot and trusted advisor to King Arthur. He was instrumental in bringing peace to the sovereign lands of his best friend and wanted no glory for it, except perhaps a warm bed and all the wine in the world that he wanted. Burnt by dragons, stabbed by manticores, challenged by witches and wizards who tried to kill him (Niviane) and eventually witness to the destruction of Mystvale as a whole at the hands of great darkness and evil.

In Cedar Grove: the first thing Merlin did was research everything he could about the world and world history by reading books, attending classes at the nearest community college and ultimately being a sponge. As the original Head Magician, he was outspoken for magic essence not being outlawed as it could be handled safely with regulations. Naturally, he was very involved with the creation of Essix on the sly, which only led to his own use of it. After ten or so years of living in the town, it came to light, and he quit (almost) cold turkey from a serious addiction to the stuff. Following that, he put in his two weeks notice and didn't show his face around town for a long while.

He disappeared from the Vale culture springing up in Cedar Grove, and wasn't seen in any of the bars he frequented. During this time he presumably got himself a degree in library science before returning to the public eye. Accepting his fate now at being called 'Marlin' for the rest of his time in the realm, he opened a bookshop with an ironic name that was (of course) a dig at their supposedly disguised identities. In 'Merlin's Mysteries' he stores a handful of important texts he borrowed from the archives when he was Head Magician – stolen, basically – and a handful of different, experimental schematics for Essix. He doesn't use the latter now, he swears.

Because he's memorised the formula.

Despite being clean of it for a good decade at the very least, and spending his summers travelling outwith Cedar Grove and even the state itself, he recently started partaking in that sort of lifestyle again, though he seems to be trying to hide it.

He believes that if innocents need to be sacrificed to find those who are evil in his mind, it should be done. Quite ironically, Lawliet seems to think he's above the law, with a lot of personal distaste for authority, thinking they go too soft on criminals.

Occasionally you'll find Lawliet in a more friendly mood, smiling and cracking jokes with those he calls friends, and is actually quite friendly as long as you haven't hurt anybody or stolen anything. For an alcoholic he can't hold his liquor very well, becoming very flirtatious and cheery when he's drunk.

Unfortunately, that was all lost to him when he woke up in Lady Guinevere's bedchambers, both of them unclothed. Having slept with his king's queen was a crime punishable by hanging, yet he stayed, continuing the relationship with Her Ladyship. In a matter of months, they were found out, King Arthur found out.

Being his favourite knight, King Arthur spared his life, merely exiling him to a far off land. Becoming a sword for hire to pay for mead, food and a roof over his head, his name once again became famous, this time under the moniker 'The Dark Knight'. Filled with sorrow he drank more and more, using alcohol, women and the occasional man to drown his sorrows, regretting all that he had lost due to his unholy lust.

Since coming to Earth, Lawliet found an interest in this modern justice system they had and started studying law to become a prosecutor, intent on punishing those who had done wrong by the eyes of the law. He hasn't, however, gotten any less dependent on drink or on 'adult companionship'.

Because of her past Ali hates any and all forms of make-up and as such more often than no will be seen just naturally the most she’ll do is style her hair as it goes down to her back it’ll look like wild growth if nothing is done about it. Objectively mean is the best way to describe Ali. She knows what it’s like to be ruled by men and as such has a tendency to look down on them when she knows she’s got the upper hand these days. Ali is reluctant to help anyone however if there’s nothing in it for her seeking reward or compensation for the smallest deeds. At her core she is a greedy woman wanting more gold to ‘fill the void’, always running from poverty although she’s the furthest from it, knowing all to well how easy it is to lose money due to thieves or lies has turned her into a very paranoid person when It comes to her money as such she is always wary when she knows for a fact another thief is around (Aladdin cough cough).

She can be sarcastic and quick witted when need be after all she did trick all forty thieves and her master to grab everything she needed to procure her place in life. She can come off as manipulative or untrustworthy when that isn’t the case, Ali will more times than not tell the truth when asked the right question, nothing she tells outright is completely accurate as she has a nasty tendency to withhold small tid bits of information on purpose mostly to see if you’re paying attention. When dealing with a woman she tends to act more understanding and empathetic, always down to listen to another’s problems and off advice not for free but very much discounted.

Ali Baba is a flamboyant showoff. The clothes she wears are always some form of luxury from somewhere, always somewhat loose and hanging from her body, every motion, every movement is exaggerated and dramatic meant to draw your eye away from your coin purse but somewhere along the lines this act because a part of her and just feels so natural when seen. She doesn’t walk she struts with her nose raised in the air with an air of confidence that almost seems obnoxious.

The woman everyone knows as Ali Baba isn’t the real Ali Baba in fact he’s been dead for a very long time but to understand how this happened you need to revisit the story of Ali Baba and the Forty thieves.

Ali Baba and his elder brother Cassim were the sons of a no name merchant, after the father died, Cassim somehow managed to marry a wealthy woman and becomes a lazy well-to-do good-for-nothing. Ali Baba married a poor woman and began a hard life as a woodcutter. One day, Ali Baba was working in a faraway forest and over hears forty thieves talking about their treasure and decides to trail them to their hideout, a caved sealed with magic and only the words “Open Sesame” will release it. When the thieves leave Ali Baba sneaks in and steals a single bag of gold coins.

The couple borrows Ali’s sister-in-law’s scales to weigh in their new found wealth. However, Cassim’s wife puts wax on the scales to find out what they were using them for naturally just out of curiosity. To her amazement a single gold coin stuck to the scale and tells Cassim, who forced his brother to show him the cave. The greedy Cassim brought a donkey to steal everything he could, but in his thieving heist he forgot to do the most important thing and that was… leave the scene of the crime and in appropriate fashion the forty thieves catch him in the act and kill Cassim. Ali Baba barely made it out panicking about the death of his brother, but having no time Ali Baba ran back home with the forty thieves behind him.

Meanwhile, in Cassim’s household a slave girl who had been eased dropping on her master and his brother also learned of the location of the treasure and saw fit to sneak out herself. As night fell the slave girl found her way to the cave one “Open Sesame” later and she was making it away with more gold than she had ever known but something special caught her eye. A lamp…dusty, old but gold, she had heard stories about lamps and how they could be sold for more than dreams would allow all it needed was a good rub. One rub was all it needed and the genie was free, but the thieves were back with Ali Baba’s head and caught her but not the Genie. At first they were just going to kill her and move on with their lives, but a fine slave girl was too much to pass up, “I could free you,” the genie whispered “That’s not enough,” she whispered back. “What is your name woman” one of the thieves asked her name wasn’t even known to her so when he asked “Ali Baba” she answered back.

The first few months were the hardest and still the Genie hid himself from sight still whispering sweet nothings of freedom into her ear, but she didn’t trust him or any man for that matter. Soon enough she broke up the pressure “We both seek freedom, allow me to inhabit your body and we she both be free’d from our shackles” the Genie said, striking a deal with her “All I ask is that you obey my commands when called upon, otherwise my power is yours” He explained. “You need only speak my true name and I shall obey” The slave agreed, biting her bottom lip and cursing under her breath ashamed she had to agree to such a deal. The pact was made and this wish and all its details were in full agreement, once the thieves were all dealt with “Now Ali Baba I command thee to relinquish your body and soul to me for all eternity” The genie commanded, but nothing happened, all it did was make the girl laugh “Ali Baba!” the magical creature yelled, “Ali Baba isn’t my true name” She whispered.

With all his magical power he scanned the girl for her real name but because she didn’t even know her own true name it was all for naught making her his new lamp only now nothing could free him and he was completely enslaved to her till he learned her name or till all of time ended.

Ali Baba or Saara has since adapted to human life although she would rather be back in her real home lounging on a mountain of gold like she used to and having a single story home and forced to use magic to make it bigger on the inside than the outside is a real annoyance to her. Thankfully the limited use of her magical power enables her to see into regular humans souls and see into their personal timeline futures a service many will pay good money for and something she is more than happy to provide.
