Your suggestion is perfectly reasonable. My main objection was to the idea that the Empire launched an all-out attack on basically a knee-jerk reaction.

I mentioned Sun Tzu not because he was a particular visionary, but because he was a collector of common wisdom and conventions. My point was that people were smart enough to understand basic strategy since antiquity.

Here's my idea: the Emperor is hosting a conference with other powerful leaders to arrange a possible truce or temporary alliance until the nature of these invaders can be decided. Fantasy characters can be ambassadors, guards, advisers, spies, or otherwise persons privy to the meeting. That should work for the most of the characters, right?

The meeting idea would be interesting though and yes, like the scifi guys, the fantasy people aren't restricted to heroes and soldiers, they can be senators, powerful merchants and other people of interest.

It could be that this conference would be an open event meaning that while people couldn't actively join in on it, they could listen to it.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I've said something contradictory to this before, but I'm going to allow people to also play members of the Imperia royal family, just not the heir or the current Emperor.

@SleepingSilence Not to nitpick, but a future tip when referring to the abbreviation of a rank, like Corporal, it would be Cpl. The abbreviations are this, for future reference:

Pvt - Private
Pfc - Private First Class
Cpl/Spc - Corporal/Specialist
Sgt - Sergeant
SSG - Staff Sergeant
SFC - Sergeant First Class
MSG - Master Sergeant
1SG - First Sergeant
SGM - Sergeant Major
CSM - Command Sergeant Major
SMA - Sergeant Major of The Army

Thought I'd take a moment to insert a bit of a lore blurb here:

- Only in the Reich would you actually be demoted to any degree, given their fetish for discipline and order
- On High Terra would earn you a bad rep and a sour look from the higher ups but nothing "major"
- In the PRN its basically the same as on High Terra although the officers are more accepting of it and don't judge quite as harshly
- On Avalia, basically current military rules about the topic in a way; you aren't supposed to do it but its common knowledge that some do it in dark corners and empty closets with a "its not illegal if they don't catch you" mentality
- On Fuso, they're really lax about that sort of stuff, its not uncommon to accidentally walk in on people in the middle of it
- On Ennedi, basically like on Avalia, technically its wrong but no one will care if no one catches you.

As for why its different amongst worlds, its due the way the GHU is set up and planetary customs and cultures.

Didn't figure that I'd have to go too deep into it, but I guess I have no choice. There is MORE than that reason for him being demoted. Was going to roleplay it out, I mentioned it briefly in my CS but they are unsure that he can be trusted to be loyal. And there are other reasons for it, that's just what he was given, and due to that it makes sense that he'd get pissed?

So...when anything doesn't immediately make sense. Figure there MAY be a story reason for that. XD
