Well when you write fanfiction stuff for as long as I do, you learn that you're gonna always play more than one character at a given time. And it's less about playing them and more about writing a story in general? Like, you're caring more or less about the plot and that as a whole rather than just your individual character, right? Essentially, in a roleplay you're not just caring about your development but as the group as a whole. More characters sound harder to deal with, but it's par for the course for any kind of novel. But it's weird to compare novels and roleplaying. One's more stressful than the other and I can probably assume you know which. roleplaying fuck dealing with all these nerds in here JUST LEMME SHIP MY STUCKY

That's like asking J.K. Rowling how she can write for 20+ characters at a given time hint: she's actually a goddess in disguise.

One of the great things about having multiple characters for shipping trash writers is you get to explore waaaay more avenues. For example, Eve would never be able to have the emotional depth that I can give Aila, but Aila could never part wisdom on people like Yuki can. And I can't ship Yuki with everybody but I can with Eve. So it's all about (at least for me), exploring different opportunities!

There's just something so perfect about getting people together, whether they're real or not. Haven't you ever watched a movie or TV show and thought to yourself: "Yup. Those two. Those two right there should get together." Or, alternatively, looked at a couple and thought they were perfect for each other? That's shipping, my friend.

i like the interaction with other characters c:

it's a lot of fun to be able to write that deep connection between two people along with fluffy cuddles and smoochies by the warm fire with blankets wrapped around them and five fuzzy socks on and hella agonizing angst where one of them goes fucking blind or dies or something (:<

@Ebonsquire Because it's really fun to picture characters together for any variety of reasons, be it the on screen chemistry or because they work so much better than the 'canon' pairing or something else. But shipping can also be a dangerous path to walk because some people take a sick sort of joy in making sure your ship crashes and burns and god dammit Jason Rothenberg why would you do that you asshole.

It's mostly just a fun thing to do for a lot of people.

I . . . I can't relate to this whatsoever. I'm usually focused on the plot, tension-building scenes, etc. Whatever social aspects of shows I do get involved with is more along the lines of "This character X should do say Y to character Z" or "This character X should do this to character Y so that they'll get Z accomplished"

I mean, I get the reasons, sort of. Then again, I've gathered that this shipping thing is popular among fangirls of shows like Supernatural and Doctor Who and movies like Harry Potter and Hunger Games. three of which i found to be mediocre and lacking in many aspects

it must be a fandom thing, though.

Nah, they're bros. Nothing more, nothing less. However, Samifer is another ship entirely.

@Ebonsquire
Yeah, it is a fangirly thing, I'll admit that. But then again, I was shipping characters long before being a fangirl. Like, at age six I was wanting Aragorn and Arwen to live happily ever after when watching LotR and stuff like that. Not that that was the only thing I focused on, of course - but I would have been supremely pissed if Arwen had gone with the rest of the Elves or something.
