Casual reminder that the Dark Angels are likely closet heretics

Don't tell Asmodai

God dammit I keep flipping back to my web browser for research, (such as Thunderhawks only being phased in during the end of the Great Crusade) only to get sidetracked, forget what I was doing, and close it back down, only to discover I needed to research something.

Great beasts? Intriguing, going for a bear motif myself

Nice! So we have the Space Bears legion, along with JBCool's Forbidden City Marines and the Zarathustran Abyss Gazers (How to Philosophize with a Thunder Hammer) to look forward to so far.

It'll be nice to have some more legions to look at and think "which chaos god's lap is this one totally going to fall into if it comes to that?"

The lore so far is my Primarch was an egotistical little shit in his younger days, he went off on a hunting trip alone, fell down a ravine and right into the den of his homeworld's principle predators (read: giant fucking bears ) The mother took exception to his intrusion and fucked his pretty little face up bad, even took out an eye. Of course he did kill it, but he learned a valuable lesson

Also: bear terminator armor, complete with lightning claws

Speaking of which I need to get back to work, grah

I wrote up a section of NPCs, and some extra traits for my Legion, and put it in Dramatis Personae, also did a MISC kind of thing under a "Other" section @BCTheEntity or anyone else cares to look.

I have already given @Yennefer's additions a look, they're good by me.

And it's worth reminding everyone that all those of us who thought our legion sheets were complete need to add two more categories, one small, one big; Legion strength (just a couple of words) and Dramatis Personae (a whole lot of words). Every legion needs a least a handful of named important NPCs, like company captains and veteran astartes. The details are in the legion sheet template on the first post in the OOC.

@Roosan In addition to this, your character's psychic Assignment Level needs to be listed in their Skills. Repeat: your character's psychic Assignment level needs to be listed in their Skills. This bears repeating, several times if need be.

@agentmanatee Excellent. Don't forget to modify Mon-Kal's biography to account for Mephisto being able to become a full-blown Space Marine. You also need to add in his Assignment level to his Skills, as has been stated previously.

@agentmanatee Looks good. However, I need to point out that Chaplains don't really exist in the time of the Great Crusade, and particularly not in this version of events during the Grim Crusade. This is actually important for everybody to note, since the topic's been brought up: Chaplains were specifically an invention of the Word Bearers Legion, after the Council of Nikaea's decree that Librarians were to be removed from the Legions led Malcador to look to Lorgar and his Legion for guidance, thus resulting in the Order of Observance. Librarians haven't been removed from the Legions in this timeline, nor does a fundamentally religious Legion actually exist from which inspiration needs to be drawn (the closest thing to that probably being the Librarius of the Sons of the Storm), so at the moment, the Order of Observance is most likely non-existent for the purposes of this game.

Indeed, it's why I put 'chaplains' in apostrophes; the monk-warriors who lead the Fifteenth are very close to what Chaplains would be, if they existed as an office at this point. That being said, they are certainly a strongly spiritual lot, just more Buddhist/Daoist in their views than...whatever Lorgar and his mental-patients were. Emperorist? Emperites? Emprians? I dunno.

They're based off the Shaolin Monks, Taoist Priests of China, aaaaand the Yamabushi and Sohei of Japan all mushed into one nice package.

I guess you could say that they're far more philosophical and not all that religious really.

@BCTheEntity In that case I will now be making a unique unit for my Legion. In reality they are less like Chaplains and more like Enforcers anyways... now I have to figure out a gothic name for them... god damnit

@Jbcool Seems legit. Actually, that brings up a good point: if the Librarians of the Sons of the Storm are basically their leadership, does that mean that the Legion specifically picks psykers to convert into Marines for the purposes of leadership? Because no normal human soul is going to end up becoming a psyker without some special method of conversion, even if the human's body has been modified with gene-seed organs.

@agentmanatee Sounds like a plan. @Roosan's name suggestion sounds pretty good to me.

@BCTheEntity That is a rather complex question, but to make it shorter and less boring, psykers are picked especially to become 'ordained' monk-warriors on their home world - even if they don''t really see it as psychic powers, more like...gifts from the Divine Wind, I suppose - the majority of the temple-cities armed forces that are not part of the middle-tier warrior caste being either peasant levies or lay-monks AKA all those monks in the temples that aren't psykers/haven't reached enlightenment (and never actually will or can, at least not in the way that their superiors have).

On their home world it is these monks, gifted with divine powers at birth, that make up the ruling councils and hierarchy. So it follows into the legion, pretty much all of them being native-born sons of Twenty-Three Sixteen and not Terrans.

Out of interest, is there any way/method of conversion by which one can become a psyker in 40K?

I was originally going to have those most 'enlightened' of the XVth able to sort of 'unlock' their latent psychic powers, but as you correctly pointed out this probably isn't even possible/plausible.

@Hank I appreciate that, meus amico! Not really sure what you're talking about, but I take every scrap of praise I can get.

@Jbcool Very interesting setup. As for deliberately converting somebody into a psyker, I don't know of any way to achieve that effect beyond worshipping Tzeentch and hoping he mutates you into one - which is guaranteed to end badly, of course - but it's possible for psykers who can control their powers (Iota level and above, which marks the bearer as a "true" psyker by Imperial standards) to improve them with practice, as well as for psychic ability to atrophy with lack of use. Omicron through Kappa designations indicate minor psionic ability, but people at these levels don't have any particular conscious control over their powers, and can't really train them to manifest accordingly. In short, you need to have it to get more of it, and as a normal human, you don't necessarily want more of it in the first place.

@Jbcool Given that Erebus somehow shoved a Daemon into a blank, anything goes at this point. Also all of the Grey Knights are psykers, unless I overlooked a detail like they take their recruits from black ships or something, maybe their geneseed makes it so?

Fucking Nemesis, the oficio assassinorum finally gets some Black Library love and they go and make something so stupid in it that it hurts my brain.
