Ambitious * Very Competitive * Caring * Stubborn

Personality: For her size and obvious strength, Valencia is surprisingly quiet. She’s not unfriendly, but reserved, more willing to listen to others than talk herself. She considers every word before she says it—this slow speech and her large size combine to give the impression of stupidity, at first glance. Make no mistake, though, she’s smarter than many of her peers—she just waits before jumping into a situation, and she never tries to show off.
The few exceptions to these rules always have to do with her team. Val is ride-or-die loyal to her teammates and her few close friends—even when it comes to the few teammates she dislikes personally, she will always have their back when it comes down to it. She's also highly competitive—she had to be to make it this far, and while she's no grandstander, she has no false modesty when it comes to her sport.
Habits: Val tends to exercise when she's stressed—after a lifetime of working out and activity it's become her comfort zone. She also tends to put on and pick off nail polish as an alternative to biting her nails.
Hobbies: Cooking has become something of a passion for her—with such an active lifestyle, she eats a lot and often. Aside from that, she also enjoys jogging, reading, and, surprisingly, knitting.
Fears:
- Drowning - she often has nightmares involving being trapped in a sinking car.
- Serious injury - even a bad broken leg could be mean the end of her career forever.
- Loneliness - she's afraid of missing out on a life with someone because she's too intent on her career, and it's part of why she's so loyal to her team.
Likes:
- Spicy food
- Swimming, ironically
- Integrity
- Nail polish
- Working out
- Road trips
Dislikes: 6 minimal
- Dishonesty
- Cruelty
- Manipulation
- Mashed potatoes
- Illness/injury/weakness
- Cheap beer
History
Thoughts On The Murder: Val can't say she liked Carter. Very few could. But she also didn't hate her as passionately as some, simply by virtue of their circles not crossing often. Val's skin was thick enough to let the occasional slur hurled at her slide, whether from Carter or otherwise. Murder, however, was another matter. No one deserved that, and Val answered every question asked as honestly and completely as she could, hoping to help catch the real culprit. She wasn't really sure that Cynthia McMillan was the killer, and wasn't afraid to say so to anyone who asked, but she never really put herself on the line in her defense either.
History During H.S.: Valencia's family was never much to brag about. On the edge between middle and lower class and in a majority Hispanic neighborhood, Val was playing backyard soccer since she could walk. In eighth grade her mother and father packed up everything they owned and their children to follow a promising job offer halfway across the country—which led them straight to Grimm, Indiana.
Despite her disappointment in the new town after the sun-soaked Arizona streets she loved, Val did her best to make the most of it. All the Grey children were enrolled in the same high school, with Val as the youngest of three. Surprisingly enough, it was in Grimm that she thrived, since it was the first school with a real soccer team. She quickly became one of the star players as a striker, and in the beginning of her senior year several colleges approached her with scholarships. Of course, the offer she took would bring her back to Arizona, and Val thought her future was bright.
Then prom happened. She was terrified that the murder investigation would disrupt her plans for college or, worse, cause the school to withdraw their offer, but to her relief everything panned out—and that's part of the reason she didn't involve herself in the case too much.
History Since Graduation: After high school came college, and Val's prospects only got better and better. Despite the years and years of nightmares, Simone's flat eyes staring out of every single one, Valencia graduated with a high enough GPA and a stellar enough team record to attract the attention of several major teams. She transitioned well into professional sports, but she had her eyes set on the top: the national women's soccer team.
It was while she was on the interim Phoenix FC team that Val met her now-ex partner, Alyssa. While she had dated on and off for a few years, this relationship lasted for three long years. They were happy together, extremely so, but Alyssa wanted to settle down as soon as possible, while Val was reluctant to tie herself down too quickly. They traveled together a lot, but Alyssa was always happier to return home at the end of a trip.
It ended when Val got the offer she'd been waiting for, to join the national team as a junior player. However, it also meant long training seasons followed by constant international traveling as games rolled on. Alyssa wasn't willing to follow Valencia all over the world for her career while making it impossible to continue her own. They ended it on good terms about six months ago, but Val is still hurting over it.
These days, she's at the top of her game. She's played in a few international games already—never as a starter, but the coach has her eye on Val as a lead striker, maybe even captain. Valencia almost didn't take time off to go to the reunion, but after her split with Alyssa thought she might want to try and reconnect with her childhood.

✿ Hye-Eun Song ☯
"Hye was fun to be around, always brightening up the room, but sometimes she got a little too bright for me. She was always driven, though, so we got along well."
While I didn’t make it to any of her shows in Korea before that whole debacle, despite not really being a K-Pop fan I have a few of her songs on my phone. Between the fans and her opinionated statuses, being Facebook friends with her is certainly an experience.

☢ Jae-kwoon Park -
"Obnoxious, and he needs to quit trying to flirt with me while I’m on the bench. I’d say obnoxious and harmless, but I don’t think anyone could ever call Jae harmless. There’s just something...off about him."
I haven’t spoken to Park since high school and I don’t mind it at all. The active dislike has worn off a bit, but I’ll probably steer clear if he comes to the reunion. Still not sure if I believe the rumors that he’s the one who nearly put Atlas in the hospital, but I guess we’ll see.

☯ Jasmin Morgan ☯
"Jasmin and I were never really close, seeing as we shared few classes and our interests didn’t really overlap, but I respect her for standing her ground—and she was a great musician!"
I only friended her recently on Facebook, but I’m so glad I did. She’s funny and insightful, not to mention has really turned herself around since high school, and I’m looking forward to seeing her again at the reunion.

☯ Riley Ridgeway ✿
"I like her honesty, and how she always sticks up for her friends, but she’s a bit hotheaded and not all that dedicated. However, she came out publicly during high school—I didn’t keep my sexuality a secret, but I also wasn’t loud and proud about it, and she definitely got kudos from me for that."
We’re friends on Facebook, and I’ve been to several of her concerts—in fact, Riley heads one of my favorite bands. I was worried it would seem like I just wanted to get closer because she was famous, but we met up after one of my games and it turned out she’d been to quite a few and had been thinking the same thing.

☯ Adelaide Grimaldi ☯
"I knew Ada through Marc and Kai, and she seemed pleasant enough—sort of off in her own little world, but nice. We went to some of the same parties, and she always seemed able to calm people down."
Our relationship really only exists on Facebook with a few likes here and there, but it’ll still be nice to see her at the reunion.

☢ Simone Carter -
"I didn’t hate Simone, not like some people did. She said some really horrible things to me at first, but I think she figured out that if she swung at me, she wouldn’t win that fight, and she backed off completely once my team made it clear they had my back. It was...tough, to say the least, being Latina around her."
I still don’t think she deserved to die, but that’s one thing I can’t change. These days I only think about her if Kai brings it up.

☢ Cynthia McMillan ☯
"One of the many reasons I sort of disliked the popular crowd on sight—Cynthia was always trying to get ahead, and she didn’t care who she trampled on the way. Still, though...I can’t see her as a murderer."
What’s happened to her since the trial is awful. She should never have been convicted, but the police wanted an open-and-shut case and it was all over so quickly. I won’t pretend we were best friends back in the day, but I hope that now she’s out of Shady Pines she’ll get at least a little better.

☯ Ashley Cunningham ☯
"Ashley was pretty entertaining, but not much more than that. I’ll admit, I sort of distrusted her in high school since she was part of the ‘in crowd’ and they tend to be pretty toxic, but I never really tried to get to know her past that."
I’m not sure if it would be welcome or weird to try and explain why I was a little distant in school, but I’m going to try anyway. Her stasuses on Facebook are pretty funny and it’ll be good to try and reconnect in person.

✿ Marc Tinder ✿
"Marc was fun to go to a party with, and he, Kai, and I sometimes hung out together. We never really hung out one on one, but he was focused and I can respect that."
Still cool as always, though I have no idea what he’s doing these days. I see him post pictures on Facebook of one of my games every now and then, so I think it’ll be fun to see him at the reunion.

✿ Kai Malana ✿
"My go-to guy when I needed to relax. And not because I wanted him to share his bowl, either, despite the occasional rumors. No, Kai was always super fun to be around when I wanted to jazz it up, or completely low-key when I just needed to chill. And despite the teeny tiny crush I had on him, he was completely gone over Adelaide, and I can and did respect that."
I’m relieved we didn’t lose touch—he’s still the most laid-back person I know. I heard he and Ada haven’t seen each other in a while, though, so I hope they at least talk it out.

☢ Atlas Sterling ☢
"Asshole. A fair enough athlete, but even if he wasn’t, he’d have just blackmailed his way into the starting lineup anyway. I’m glad I never had to be on a team with him. Tried to get into my good graces more than once by leading with his dick, that got old fast—I never hit him, but I got pretty damn close."
I’ve had no contact with Atlas since high school, other than seeing his name on a few articles, and I would love to keep it that way. I think that’d be best for everyone.
