Dead Cruiser Dishonour Before Death / Better You Than Me

@Dead Cruiser: Uh... Tiamat is still alive, and is in fact one of the leaders of the Reclamation of Chaos; it is led by Jörmungandr, Apep, Tiamat, Vritra, Typhon, Yamata no Orochi, and Aži Dahāka, seven ancient serpentine spirits that were born from the fragments of the Primordial Chaos. So if Tiamat is the one you want to reassemble, that wouldn't work. However, the Reclamation is trying to reassemble the Primordial Chaos, which is reasonably similar to what you're going for. In addition to fighting angels and demons, the Reclamation is trying to find, and either recruit or devour (if recruitment isn't possible) other spirits of chaos, and gather souls in general, to feed them into a cauldron of souls and further the rebirth of Chaos.

As for the other mythological figures you listed, no, they shouldn't all be children of Tiamat, as the various different pantheons of the world have all developed independently. Some of them could have been born from the fragments of the Primordial Chaos, which is a cross-cultural thing.

There sure is a lot of restrictive backstory information that we aren't privy to. I'm reminded of advice I received a long time ago relating to "pet settings:" a roleplay is not a book, if you want to make a certain story that you want to progress in a certain way, it's best written alone.

@Dead Cruiser: Keep in mind that this is just the interest check thread, so I've just written down some basic information to see if people are interested. Once the actual game thread is up, all the additional details will become available to the players.

Also, I don't think I'm being too restrictive here, at least regarding how the plot can progress in the future. There are seven major factions, each with its own general goals, but other than that, it can be up to the players to decide how these goals are met. The majority of the factions' leaders can be played by players too, as only their mantles have been decided so far, not actual character details. The backstory is a bit more strictly defined, but there are still plenty of holes that players can fill in. Just because one particular backstory you have in mind doesn't work, doesn't mean the whole thing is overly restrictive.

My first RP on this site failed partly because I gave the players too much freedom, i.e. not enough things to work with; someone compared it to throwing a bunch of newborns into the ocean and telling them to build a house. I don't plan to strictly railroad the plot, but I don't think something completely freeform is going to work out either.

My general observation has just been that there has been a caveat to pretty much everything that I've come up with, and usually it's something that has not yet been explained or made available. Not complaining, mind, just observing. As a whole, what I'm taking away is that only the most basic ideas of the mythological concepts we're working with have actually been preserved, and it's more accurate to say that we're working within your mythology, which has had some familiar terms slapped onto it.

Just as an example, you can't blame me for assuming that Tiamat is dead, given that the primary point of her existence in mythology was to be slain by Marduk and used to create the Heavens and Earth from her corpse.

In any case, my character concept is thus when stripped down to its core concepts: a person bonded with Tiamat, with powers themed after oceans, life, and chaos, with a Lovecraftian bent that portrays Tiamat as some manner of chthonic broodmother of the deep sea.

Regarding finer details: I would like my humanoid character to be an oceanic explorer and/or marine biologist, that may have encountered Tiamat in the deep sea, possibly when the Seals were undone. His exposure to chaotic magic, particular Tiamat's has warped his body to be inhuman and fishlike, which he keeps secret with such implements as a long coat and an eyepatch.

However, if the character you have in mind is Tiamat, the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of the primordial sea, then unfortunately @BCTheEntity is already using that mythological figure with one of his characters.

@Dead Cruiser

I uh, found this for you.

I may not be the GM, but you're simply not reading anything. You CAN'T SAY that the information isn't there because I can point to you where every single one of your questions has been answered.

This is indeed true, and I'm sorry if that wasn't clear before. I try to not be restrictive, but with so many mythologies put together, I have to make some modifications to make sure they're all consistent with each other, and with my universe. For instance, none of the mythologies' creation stories can really be true, since planet Earth is still billions of years old, and humans and spirits gradually evolved on it. Additionally, my own characters and the characters of the co-GMs have their backstories too, and we obviously have to make sure the setting is consistent with these backstories. But as you said, we're still trying to preserve the basic ideas and themes of the various mythologies we're using, so that they're at least somewhat recognizable as their real life counterparts.

All in all, I'd suggest that you don't try to put too many details into your character's backstory until the actual game thread is up, at which point all the information will be given to you. Then you'd know how to work within the setting's limitations.

Just as an example, you can't blame me for assuming that Tiamat is dead, given that the primary point of her existence in mythology was to be slain by Marduk and used to create the Heavens and Earth from her corpse.

Oh, right, I forgot about that. I was looking for dragon-like chaos monsters in mythology that have parallels with one another as the leaders of the Reclamation of Chaos, and wanted seven of them due to the game's numerological theme. Some of them are dead in their own mythologies, e.g. Tiamat and Yamata no Orochi, but I still wanted to use them, so I made some changes. I won't blame you for expecting more mythological accuracy, of course; I should've made things clearer in the beginning.

In any case, my character concept is thus when stripped down to its core concepts: a person bonded with Tiamat, with powers themed after oceans, life, and chaos, with a Lovecraftian bent that portrays Tiamat as some manner of chthonic broodmother of the deep sea.

These ideas are fine. One thing to note is that even if your human character's body is mutated by magic to become fish-like, his soul is still recognized as human by the Seven Seals, so he still functions as the human half of a Soul Pact needed to bypass the Seals' power restriction. In fact, quite a number of humans have had their bodies changed by magic, so they don't look fully human anymore.

But as I said above, I suggest you refrain from adding too many details to your character until the game thread goes up, so that you won't end up adding something that doesn't work.

I actually convinced BC to change his mind on that, so he's no longer using Tiamat; he's using Yamata no Orochi now.

EDIT: Oops, meant to edit my post above instead of double post. But I don't see a way to delete my own posts?

Now I feel like the guy who doesn't read ;3;
But it's likely that I read a post before the edit.

Meanwhile I'm wondering what my human counterpart would be... even though I think it'd be much more fun to share a character square of pacts with another player ^^

Let's see...

Ra is one of the leaders of the Mythic Accord. He's conflated with Amun, Aten, and Horus (as Ra-Horakhty). This could be explained as Ra's mantle being passed on to different spirits several times or something, depending on who plays as him.

Apep is one of the leaders of the Reclamation of Chaos, and Ammit is one of its major members.

Set is one of the leaders of the Millennial Union, and Bastet is one of its major members.

Aside from these, there are no restrictions. You can play as any of these spirits, as long as you don't go against anything I said above.

Are the Greek Gods also split up in a similar manner? So I may know for story reasons of course haha

Oh, no, the pantheons aren't "split up". You should assume that every "main" god in any mythology belongs to its appropriate pantheon, which is a part of the Mythic Accord, unless stated otherwise. When those exceptions occur, it's because the god in question left their original pantheon to join whichever other faction.

As for Greek gods...

Zeus is a leader of the Mythic Accord, as you might expect. Hermes is a liaison between the Accord and the Millennial Union.

Typhon is a leader of the Reclamation of Chaos, and Echidna is another important member.

Hermaphroditus is a leader of the Millennial Union, and is merged with the nymph Salmacis as per his myth.

Oh, and Greek and Roman gods are the same beings, e.g. Zeus is the same as Jupiter.

EDIT: I edited the introduction post a bit. More specifically, a sentence was added that says magic and spirits were gradually forgotten after the Seven Seals blocked off interdimensional travel 2000 years ago, and the myths of today are what's left of records back then.

How would a dual personal be portrayed?

I was thinking Hathor/Sekhmet since they're the same person.

@JohnSolaris

Got it. Time to go through SMT's wiki for a while to get ideas.

<Snipped quote by DarkwolfX37>

No clue who or what Haruhi is

ALSO, the biblical "Lucifer" has dozens of names, some denominations ascribe him several names that are not his own, and some take some of his names and make new people out of them.

FOR INSTANCE, half those Princes that John named are using names that actually belong to Lucifer, and one of them isn't a demon at all (Leviathan), but an animal. That is, if you are going by the original bible and the correct translations.

Hi, my name is Robby, and I'm somewhat of a theologian.

I disagree, but I've found this to be a touchy subject so I'll just say "satan was originally a title" and leave it at that.
Figured the haruhi joke wouldn't fly.

@FrozenEcstasy: I, too, am an armchair theologian. Join me as I lead you on a journey about the conflation of Lucifer and Satan over time.

Are you allowing more players, and if so, would it be possible to play a person bonded to Cernunnos/Herne the Hunter?

You decide how split personalities work for your character. They may or may not be aware of each other, may or may not be able to switch at will, etc.

Huh, I didn't know that Hathor and Sekhmet were the same. Wikipedia was somewhat ambiguous about that, but I looked it up further on Google, and multiple sources do say that they're the same. So yeah, do with this as you will.

@JohnSolaris Is Logos an acceptable spirit?

Sorry, but I don't think so. According to Wikipedia, Logos is either a title of Jesus, or something related to God, neither of which are allowed. The Gnostic version has Logos paired with Sophia, and both of them are emanations of God or something, so that's not allowed either. Unless I'm missing something?

Are you allowing more players, and if so, would it be possible to play a person bonded to Cernunnos/Herne the Hunter?

Yes, more players are always welcome. And yes, you can play as Cernunnos/Herne.

Would a spirit with the mantles of Anubis and Zadkiel be plausible?

Edit: Question. Given what the document says on spirits, are spirits able to change their appearance at will, since their bodies are made of mana? Or is it constant since it's perfectly attuned to their soul?
