Gavin woke up when the car came to a stop. He had tried to stay awake during the trip from the bus station to the home where he was supposed to stay, but the monotonous drive drive lulled him into a light slumber.
The DCFS man driving the car addressed Gavin in a bored voice. "Allright boy, we're here. Make sure you've got all of your stuff. If you leave anything, it will have to wait until the next time I'm in the area. Understand?"
Gavin nodded to the man as he unbuckled himself, gathered his two Wal-Mart bags, and open the car's back door.
"Oh, give the hosekeeper this," the man continued, passing Gavin a sealed manilia envelope. "This has all of your paperwork. Just go up and knock on the door."
Gavin took the envelope and got out of the car. "Thank you," Gavin said, closing the door. As Gavin watched, the car pulled away and faded into the distance. He turned and climbed the long flight of steps to the door. He had to stretch as high as he could to reach the heavy knocker.
RAP RAP RAP
After the last rap, he stepped back from the door and waited for whoever would open.
