Personality: Calvin is an easy going man. His years of living in miserable conditions has taught him to be tolerant of some of the most disgusting environment the world has to offer. He is a quick thinker and enjoys engaging in playful banter with friends, humor and practical jokes. When it is time to work, Calvin is focused on the task at hand, not easily distracted. He does occasionally wonder about his parents; believing them to be dead. Although he has had occasional dates in his life, he never had a serious relationship with a woman. This is his one regret. Now he worries this may never happen, given the current state of affairs in the world. It is not that he is looking for a woman, in fact, he puts the notion out of his mind as one of those things he is incapable of achieving.
Backstory: Calvin Young grew up in West Roxbury, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. West Roxbury is home to Boston Police Officers and Calvin's father Reginald "Reggie" served the city of Boston for over thirty years, rising to the rank of Superintendant in charge of the Bureau of Investigative Services (BIS), which consists of the Homicide Unit, Drug Control Unit, Family Justice Center and Forensic Science Division. Due to his father's position in the community, young Calvin always had to keep his nose clean. His father was tough on him, insuring he kept out of trouble.
Calvin played football at Fenway High School on Alleghany St. Calvin played varsity Safety and excelled on defense. He exhibited leadership on and off the field unifying the defensive squad into a cohesive team. Occasionally, he was called upon to play Running Back or Receiver.
Although Calvin excelled at athletics, he did not do so well in academic pursuits. He did however graduate with his classmates in 2123. Immediately following High School, Calvin found that job prospects were deplorable and enlisted in the United States Army. He chose the Military Occupational Specialty 13F Fire Support Specialist. He conducted Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma learning how to call in any and all indirect fire available to the US Army. This included Artillery, Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and Infantry Mortars.
Calvin's first duty assignment was with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment in the US 1st Armor Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas. While at Ft. Bliss, Calvin found a martial arts school off post that taught the Israeli Self Defense form, Krav Maga. Private First Class Young really enjoyed the physicality of the exercise along with the aggressiveness. He took to it immediately.
Calvin Young spent his first three years in the Army with 2-3FA, 1AD ending up as a Specialist. When he was due to re-enlist, he was offered a promotion to Sergeant and training in US Army Special Forces. He was actually quite excited about this offer and snapped it up right away.
Sergeant Young then transferred to Ft. Benning, GA where he underwent four weeks of Airborne school. This training was actually more physical fitness than anything else. Fortunately, for Calvin, he had been focusing on his fitness since he was a Freshman in High School taking up weight lifting and then later as a brand new recruit training in Krav Maga in Texas.
After receiving his silver parachutist badge, he then headed to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. This was one of the most grueling experiences of his lifetime. He spent almost a year in the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQ). Finally after four years in the US Army, Sergeant Calvin Young was a 22-year old 18B, Special Forces Weapons Sergeant.
Sergeant Young was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky for five years. As a member of Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) #5213, A Company, 2nd Battalion, Sergeant Young saw action in Yemen, Somalia, Eqypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, UAE, Iraq, Chad and Syria. About two years into his time with the 5th Group, Calvin Young was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
Next, he transferred to 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), popularly known as Delta Force. While with Delta, SSG Young saw action all over the world. SFOD Delta is assigned missions based on the threat level assigned by the President of the United States of America (POTUSA). Delta is used for hostage rescue and counterterrorism, as well as direct action and reconnaissance against high-value targets.
While with 5th SFG, Calvin Young used his Fire Support Specialist skills in calling in Artillery, mortar and rocket fire when needed. Often times, his ODA had a USAF Forward Air Control Party attached which provided guidance for Tactical Air assets providing Close Air Support. In conjunction with his duties as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant and Forward Observer, SSG Young cross trained with US Air Force Forward Air Controllers to learn their duties as well. While with 5th SFG, SSG Young became qualified to call in Close Air Support attacks from Tactical Air assets provided in theater. These skills he has been able to utilitize with Indirect Fire Support units within Shadow Task Group (STG) or Private Military Corporations contracted to support STG in their operations.
It was during this time, that the US Army was called upon to assist with fighting the machines. The 5th SFG was already forward deployed to North Africa. SSG Young saw action in and around Cairo, Egypt, fighting the machines created by the corporations years before. He truly did not understand how the machines had acquired independent intelligence from a human operator, but was unfortunately, not in a position to question. As a Fire Support Specialist and Forward Air Controller for his Operational Detachment Alpha, SSG Young called in volumes of both indirect fired artillery and rocket projectiles as well as air launched munitions.
The unit was called back to the States in 2131, just before the launch of Weapons of Mass Destruction. He enjoyed being back home in Kentucky, but also quietly craved to be back in the shit. When he was in theater, he wanted to be home, but when he was home, he wanted to be in theater. It a crazy situation, but he dealt with it best he could.
When he heard about the WMD use all over the world, he cringed. He lost contact with his father and mother up in Boston. He knew he dad had his hands full with his duties with BPD. Things became darker and there were too many uncertainties in life.
After ten years in the army, one year after joining ODA-D, Calvin Young was promoted to Sergeant First Class at the age of 28. Also, due to his duty assignments in the US Special Operations Command, he was able to continue his training in Krav Maga. He did however miss one year of training while he was at JFK-SWC, but US Special Operations Units train in Krav Maga as a Standard Operational Procedure. Everyone in USSOCOM trains in Krav.
Due to the nuclear winter imposed on everyone, much of the civilian populace has gone underground. Even SFC Young's 1st SFOD-D spends most of its time underground. Advancements in exo-skeletons and the use of environmentally contained suits has allowed the Special Forces teams to operate above ground for short durations. SFC Young and his teammates do what they can to survive and complete their missions.
In 2135, while on a reconnaissance and surveillance operation in the Washington, DC area, SFC Young's Delta Team came in contact with Mutants. While in a fight for their lives, one member of the team, Anthony Gregario was bitten by mutated human. The infection time was rapid. SSG Gregario became enraged and displayed extreme aggression as well as superior speed. "Doc" Kraznowski had to put him down. It was tragic. SFC Young's team leader, Master Segeant Holloway reported their observations up the chain of command as soon as they were debriefed. That was when the order was given to shoot on sight, any contact with mutated humans and if possible to destroy them at a distance. While snipers became an excellent tool for targeting individual targets, SFC Young's skills with directing Indirect Fire and Tactical Air assets helped to destroy large herds of the infected population.
Even with the limited successes the US Army had in 2135, it was not enough. The machines and mutated lifeforms have pushed the healthy humans underground. The organizational structure of the US Military has disintegrated. Experienced personnel were urged to join Private Military Corporations like Shadow Task Group. This is exactly what former Sergeant First Class Calvin Young did.
Timeline: I took Anima's timeline and integrated Calvin Young's timeline to see how they mesh together. This helped me in writing the backstory for SFC Young.
2105: Born August 15. Given this information, he is either 31 if the current date is prior to his birthdate in 2137 or 32 if after his birthdate.
2112: Cryus Corporation announced the successful creation of the first independent AI machine. The bankrupt corporation quickly skyrocketed to the most powerful entity in the world. Mass distribution of the machines are assembled in undisclosed locations.
2112: Calvin is 6 or 7 years old and unaware of Cyrus Corporation and their machines.
2115: The machines have been further refined for cheaper assembly. Almost every household now owns a personal machine.
2115: Calvin is 9 or 10 years old. His father is a Boston City Police Detective. The Detective Lieutenant purchases a "Cyrus Machine" for the home. Calvin is curious.
2116: Ethics Community created to protect the rights of the machines. However, human bias of the committee made each law work in the interest of mankind. Machine sympathizers began riots in the streets. Minor domestic disturbances, only a few deaths reported. The same cannot be said of the machines.
2116: Calvin is 10 or 11 years old. He notices his father's work load increases during the Back Bay Riots that summer.
2123: Calvin Graduates HS & joins the Army. Reginald Young is appointed Superintendant of the BIS.
2126: Calvin Young is promoted to Sergeant and begins Special Forces Training.
2127: Learning from the past, strict rules were enforced. Law enforcement has become integrated into the Ethics Committee. Many anti-synthetic extremist carry out atrocious crimes against humanities synthetic siblings.
2127: Calvin Assigned to 5th SFG. First and Second deployments to Middle East.
2128: Calvin participates in five separate deployments to North Africa and the Middle East. He has not time or interest in reading about or understanding what is happening in the realm of AI enhanced machines or the term Anti-Synthetic exrtremist.
2129: First reported crime of murder by the hands of a machine. Law enforcement and civilian alike treat machines with heavy prejudice. Strong resentment and disregard for the platforms begin. The streets of every nation is set ablaze with violence. Initially, the machines don’t retaliate. However, it didn’t stay like that for long.
2129: Calvin is promoted to Staff Sergeant and returns to the Middle East and North Africa for six more deployments. He calls in several Close Air Support Missions using F-68 Thunderbird Attack Aircraft. The F-68 is an enhanced VII Generation Attack Aircraft encompassing VTOL/STOL capabilities, stealth, and improved avionics which can generate 30+G turns and naturally UCAV capabilities. A human cannot survive the turns this aircraft is capable of making. A few models of the F-68 are manned providing the Air Force's desired human eye perception of the 22nd Century battlefield.
2130: Military forces are called in. The revolt of the machines have begun. Every corner of the once great megalopolises are filled with death. The machines begin to develop weapons of their own through the salvage and rapid research that they can command. Slowly, humanity is slowly losing their ground.
2130: Calvin and the 5th SFG are assigned to the French Base at Djibouti. They conduct numerous operations against machines in Northeastern Africa; specifically in Egypt.
2131: Humanity resorts to WMDs in hopes of destroying their creations. With heavy regret, death reigns from above as whole cities are leveled. Families unable to flee to safe distances are vaporized under the extreme heat of human made missiles. However, the objective was successful. The machines were halted... for now.
2131: Calvin's ODA is evacuated from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, mere hours before a 100 Megaton nuclear Warhead detonates over this Middle Eastern City killing an estimated 1.8 Million People.
2132: Assigned to 1st SFOD-D and deploys to several classified locations around the world including Egypt, Russia and Beijing China.
2133: Earth has become polluted with radiation and nuclear winters. Humanity has quickly fled to underground cities. There, new generations are born. Life goes on, but new dangers have arrived.
2133: SSG Young is promoted to Sergeant First Class. His Operational Detachment Delta (ODD) has been recalled back to the US permanently. SFC Young will never be deployed outside the US again. Times have become too difficult in country to send troops overseas. He and his ODD conduct several patrols in NBC Suits (MOPP-4). Occasionally contact with the Machines occurs. The ODD is supported by a squadron of F-68s and a battalion of MLRS. He uses them occasionally during operations in Northern Virginia.
2135: First encounter with the mutated has been confirmed. Studies have confirmed the infectivity of a bite from the infected. Anatomy has revealed that and saliva or any particle of blood can cause immediate infection. Infectees are enraged and show extreme aggression as do they have superior speed. All combat personnel are ordered to kill on sight. Distance kills recommended.
2135: SFC Young's last patrol in Eastern US results in the mutated death of a teammate. Calvin is horrified and happy to make it out of DC alive. Later that year, the US Army dissolves and the survivors are left to make their way to safety in the underground cities or wherever Safe Haven can be found.
2136: SFC Young agrees to join Shadow Task Group in order to fight against both the Mutants and the Machines.
2137 (Present Day): Humanity has lost any hope in reclaiming the surface. The infected and the machines have supremacy. Contact has been lost with many underground cities while surface settlements have also been lost. The population is slowly diminishing. The golden age of humans is over.
During the construction of this Character Sheet, I made the inaccurate assumption that Major Command and Sub Major Commands within the US Army would remain organized in the early 22nd century as they are in the early 21st Century. I say inaccurate because the US Army changes its organizational structure more frequently than once every 100 years. As a notice of validity, the author of this character sheet spent 21 years in the US Army retiring 14 years ago as an Infantry Officer. If I didn't know something, I researched it.
Psst, @Anima - I'm 100% sure we've written together in the past for a game based in the world of this game's namesake... Haha, anyway, popping in to drop my interest on this shindig! If there's confirmation that this will still be a thing, I'll definitely draw up a CS and shoot it over to ya.
I'm sorry I've been gone for so long folks. Semester is done, so expect to see me be much more active and such.
@Savage Your character is splendid. I love the backstory you created for him and the creative freedom you used. CPT is such a wonderful concept. If you have any other ideas, please lay them on me.
I have nothing to complain about for you character so far. Though I didn't list it explicitly, third person is golden for IC. First person definitely works for your backstory however.
@vietmyke Your character seems to be recycled from the original LoU. I have nothing to comment. Please see yourself out the door. (Joke joke! I need a demolition nut!)
@Zorogami From my first read, I'm fine with what you have so far for your character. Can you expand upon Lennert's time from joining the service to being transferred to STG? There has to be a stand out factor to have someone be selected for STG. Think of it like this. The normal service carries out perimeter and various traditional duties. The STG ventures out for longer periods of time to disrupt, recon, or establish a beach head for normal military personnel. Both complement each other but perform very different tasks. One requires more ability however.
Also, is it safe to assume Lennert's family is dead? If so, please specify.
If you want clarification or want ideas and such, just let me know!
@Gunther The amount of research and time you put into making your character really shows! I loved what I've read so far. Truly. I'll have to do a re-read given that extensive backstory for further comments from me.
For your character focus, he'll mainly be operating with the heavy weapons capabilities. Air support is very limited with respect to STG operations. I'm still working on a STG info bracket. Anyway, while air support is available sometimes, STG are expected to perform autonomously except when they rendezvous with friendlies, are awaiting exfiltration, or are in UGC air capable spaces.
Just a heads up. When I finish the STG bracket, I think that'll help you and everyone further understand the STG purpose and what they do.
Looks good so far though!
To those I have yet to get to, I'll respond later tonight. I have to jump ship for right now. I'm hoping to have the roster out by this weekend and kick this off by Sunday or Monday. Please don't post your character to the character tab until I or Zhaliora give you the go ahead.
Thanks for being super patient. I love everything I've read so far :)!
@Anima Not true! The only things that have remained the same is the picture and presence of bombs and carbine. Most of the background and personality have been written from the ground up. D:

... This is why relying on old memories and assuming do not make a savvy combination. My bad!
I remember you dear! Same name but different experience altogether. Send me your CS whenever you'd like!
@Anima Well thank you very much! And yes I agree third person is the only way to go for IC...it makes everything far less confusing. However I wanted to try something different for the CS. I'm glad it worked out!
@AnimaThanks a lot for the feedback. Will modify my CS according to it, expect an update soon
EDIT: Here is my modified CS. The parts that have been added/changed are in red for easier reading.
Personal Information Full Name: Lennart James Webbs Age: 24 Home City: Tulsa, OK
Appearance: Lennart stands at 5,8" and is of a leaner build comprared to other soldiers. His light brown hair is medium long and usually a big mess, his beard on the other hand is well-kept. His left pinky finger is missing, cut off during a confrontation in the war.
Military Status Rank: Corporal Doctrine: STG Operative - Sniper
Equipment:
This armor is designed for snipers of the STG, allowing the user to be more mobile and stealthy at the cost of protection. Its surface is coated in nanoparticles that can assume the color of the suits' surroundings, making the operative a lot harder to spot. A built-in mechanism nullifies the wearer's shakiness, increasing the accuracy of the shots he takes.
One of the finest pieces of technology ever created, the latest FSR model is the perfect weapon for any sniper. The scope allows for customizable magnification up to 25x, as well as night- and infrared vision. The cartridges and can be loaded with regular or armor-penetrating bullets. The FSR is a very reliable weapon, able to read environmental inputs to adjust for wind and weather conditions. Major downsides are the reload time of 4.7 secs and it's size, that makes it hard to use outside of a stationary position.
Common side-weapon among STG operatives. It comes with built-in laser and flashlight attachements for when the need arises. It's magazine can hold up to 14 bullets. This weapon is used for close quarters, where the sniper rifle would be too clumsy to use.
Military Knife - Used in combination with the LP4 pistol for silent attacks in CQC situations Movement Sensor - Little gadgets than can be placed around the sniper's position, detects movement in a 15ft radius, beeps loudly when activated CF Contact Lense - Contact lense that works just like binoculars
Training: Lennart had nothing to do with weapons or the military until he ended up at the UGC-Alpha facility at the age of 19. Wanting to help humanity and fueled by revenge, he decided to become a soldier and fight at the frontlines. However, Lennart proved to be less than perfect for the job, having trouble with the demanding physical training at first. When he held a sniper rifle for the first thime though, his instructor finally saw a niche where the young man could excel. From there on out, he was trained to become proficient in long-distance engagements, focusing on accuracy and finesse instead of brute force. Lennart succesfully finished his military instruction, and for a time he worked for the City Defense Taskforce. Their mission is to sweep the UGC's perimeter on the surface, making sure no hostiles try to find a way into the city. Over the years, Lennart has accumulated a total of 22 confirmed kills, his biggest success however was his involvment in stopping a major group of hostiles from entering the UGC. It was a dark and hostile night, a storm had been brewing throughout the majority of the day and into the night. Lennart and his squad were on their regular patrol, when suddenly a group of 8 machines attacked them out of nowhere. 2 members of the team died almost instantly, leaving only Lennart and another member to fend for themselves. They managed to escape the ambush, killing 2 machines while doing so. Once they reached the UGC entry point, it was time to take a stand. Having to deal with the darkness and the stormy weather made their job that mauch harder, as the stand-off between the two factions dragged on for almost thirty minutes. Thanks to Lennart's superior sniping and obversation skills, the duo managed to kill off the remaining 6 machines without allowing them access to the UGC. It was this merit that caught the STG's interest, and eventually lead to Lennart's recruitment a few months after.
Skills: Sniper - Lennart is very proficient at long-range engagements. He is patient and observant, taking his time to place the perfect shot Bird's Eye View - Placing himself in higher situated vantage points, Lennart is able to observe the battlefield in its entirety and can relay any useful information to his allies
Personality: Lennart is rather quiet and an introvert, preferring to be the observant listener to the loud talker. He is often lost in his own thoughts, imaging a life where the world has not gone completely down the drain. An honest and loyal person, he values human life above all else. The young man does not consider himself a bad person, however, he does nurture a lot of hate towards the machines and what they have done to humanity. This hate is the fuel that keeps him going, although he prefers to hide those dark thoughts, keeping a calm exterior at all times. In battle, it is this calmness that allows Lennart to be an efficient sniper. He methodically picks his target and waits for the right opportunity to strike. People who befriend Lennart will find out that once he warms up to you, he can actually be a very friendly and sometimes even funny individual, who has experienced a lot of loss and pain during the war.
Backstory: Lennart James Webbs was born in Tulsa and lived there until the war broke loose. Son to a teacher and a secretary, his life was full of love and happiness for a pretty long time. He did well at school, never being the smartest, but always getting good grades and making a lot of friends. Fan of the outdoors, he enjoyed to ride his bike and play soccer; camping was Lennart's favorite way to spend any and all vacations. His dream was to become a teacher, just like his dad, and probably stay in Tulsa for the rest of his life. Everything changed though when the revolts started, and the young boy would soon realize that his understanding of the world and everything in it wouldn't matter a damn.
Tulsa's revolts were not as bloody or destructive as those happening in the major American cities, but it was enough to scare the Webbs family away from their home and life as they knew it. Fearing impending death, the family packed together as much as they could and left the city, like so many others did at the time. Living on the road for weeks, only staying in places for short periods of time or living in the forests if needed, luck eventually ran out. Lennart and his family were close to Dallas, and against their better judgement, they needed to enter the city to restock their supplies. Arriving at a tunnel, there was no way to keep going on the road, as abandoned cars and piles of rubble made progressing with the car impossible. The Webbs got out, and proceeded their journey by foot. Finally in the city, they stopped at the first pharmacy they found, which would turn out to be the biggest mistake of their lives. When the Webbs got in, they were greeted by three shiny, steel-coated individuals.
Lennart is not sure what really happened that day, his mind has blocked out most of the memories, the bits and pieces he remembers are marked by screams, broken glass, and a terrible amount of pain. All he knows is that, when he regained consciousness again, Lennart was laying in some kind of make-shift bed, surrounded by men in military uniform and other civilians. There was intense pain coming from his left hand, and when the boy checked for a reason, he let out a high-pitched scream: His left pinky was missing. A doctor came over, trying to calm down Lennart, who was now crying and asking to see his parents. The doctor explained that Lennart had been saved by a group of soldiers that were sweeping the area, but there was nothing they could do to save his parents. This day marks the point where the once happy and cheerful Lennart became the quiet and introvert person we know today. With his family dead and the poor boy being by himself, he decided he would one day get payback for his loss
The following years in his life were marked by the boys hate for the machines and the thirst for revenge. Once him and the other survivors were transfered to UGC-Alpha a few months after his arrival, Lennart enrolled in the military service to stop feeling powerless, and hoping to eventually get the chance to avenge his parents.
To everyone. I would like to start this next Monday. I'm revising the policy a bit concerning number of characters. I'm going to deny further potential interest after this post.
Namely, those who voiced interest already are free to continue making their character sheet. Those who ask to make one post this post will not be consider or placed on a waitlist if one of you should choose to opt out.
Secondly, I'm going to revise the rules a bit. Same ones are still there. Just adding stuff for clarity as the story moves on and such.
Thirdly, I would like to post a starter next Monday. Please have CSes finished prior to this coming Monday.
I'm peeking in to say that I'm gonna go ahead and give up my spot, I've already been accepted into another game. Apologies, and best of luck to you all!
@AnimaSorry it took me a bit longer to post Webbs in the Character section, the Guild has been messing up a lot lately. Looking forward to get this started!
