Intrigue - Low Fantasy - Mature - Advanced

For as long as men have lived in the world, there have been two moons -- Eirtu and Elonar. Eirtu has always been known as "The Great Moon" and the physical embodiment of the god of the world's dominant religion, whereas "The Lesser Moon" Elonar has faithfully orbited Eirtu as a physical manifestation of their goddess. That all changed recently when Elonar crashed into Eirtu, leaving nothing to prove it had ever existed but a sizable crater.

Predictably, the realm hasn't responded too well.

In the capital, tensions have been minimized to church leaders being busy handling the influx of converts and pleas of the frightened devout, whereas in the more rural regions of the world, low lords are being slain in the streets by hordes of peasants who believe that their goddess has died and that the end is very much nigh. With the royal army being a shadow of what it once was and practically abandoned because of the centuries of peace with other nations, chaos will definitely be one of the themes in play here.

Is this a post-apocalyptic medieval RP? No. By and large, I think most people will have calmed down about the moon exploding a few months into the RP when they've seen that the world isn't going to be swallowed into hellfire, but the point of this cataclysmic event is to spark off a power struggle that we'll deal with for the rest of the RP. Some will rise to power on the backs of those initially fearful about an apocalypse, others will use the tension to destroy old alliances and create new ones, and so on. This moon hoopajoop is designed to create the interregnum for our story that replaces Robert Baratheon's rebellion and death.

The roleplay itself will have its fair share of combat and war, but for the most part, I'd like to focus on intrigue more. "Petyr is an honorless liar" is one thing, but implying Petyr is guilty for something by saying "Surely, I hope you don't take into account Petyr's past as you cast judgement" is even better. I've seen too many Nation RP's where characters just blatantly say shit that would be taken as a declaration of war every other post, so try to not do that, unless your intention is to play a character destined to die because of their ignorance of politicking.

Additionally, I figure I should mention there will be a lot of focus on the character arcs and development of characters in great houses, so though the greater focus will be about the nations, this is still a story about people trying to adapt to a great change less than a story about nations conquering one another, though that might also happen as the story unfolds.

I will offer up my interest now, would a religious order be acceptable for a house? So some of the priesthood see the colliding of the two moons as a sign for change a lnd stir people into a bit of a frenzy and grab some land and what not to work from (think Knights of St John or the Tuetonic Order in a way but formed in opposition to the main religion, not as a part of it) . Partly because they do believe the action heralds great change in what should be believed, but also just some plain old fashioned power hunger.

I'd prefer great houses stay great houses, though with your plot in mind, I could easily see a deeply religious leader of a house (Or whoever can kill and replace the leader) using their wealth and status to fund this new religious order Stannis-Style for the reasons you mentioned.

Well I am more than happy to play a great house, and then have forming this sect as part of my RP story? Would that be cool?

Looks interesting.
Will it be custom made houses or would it be houses from the show?

Glad to see all this interest! I realized a large amount of nation history and house history is dependent on interactions with other nations and houses, though since it'd be impossible to do so without knowing who's accepted, think of this application as the draft for your actual sheet. Once I accept the parties who are up to snuff, we can all revise our sheet a bit to be more fleshed out and include interactions. If you'd like to have a history deeply ingrained with interactions with other houses, be it as former slaves or rivals or something like that, try to just refer to their rival house as "A rival house" and generalized things like that. Once we have a final list for who's in the roleplay, players will volunteer their nation/house history to be the one used in yours.

Anyway, enough jibber-jabber, here's the sheet. Either post it here or PM it to me, and feel free to PM it to me anytime before you're done for advice or any questions. The deadline is one June 10th!

Also, not gonna lie, I have no map. If anyone wants to volunteer their skills as a mapmaker, that would be greatly appreciated! Currently I'd like to leave actual mapmaking for once we decide on who's accepted and what geographical features they want, as well as just about all of the worldbuilding possible. Even the country name! I don't have one in mind yet, so just refer to our shared continent as "Arcadia" for now. This will probably change, so don't get too attached to it.

Hi this looks interesting. I've never seen or watched game of thrones. Is this going to be based on that at all?

Yes. For thematic similarities and other things we're borrowing (Great houses and layers of intrigue, for instance) I'd recommend checking out the book series wiki.

I may be interested, but I would prefer if the world-building aspect was free-form and just sort of done as we go, as opposed to having something like a piratepad. People tend to get too distracted when the latter is done. If I do join it will likely be as something relatively small.

I would assume that the six nations are all led by great houses. You can be a small great house of a small nation, but a great house nonetheless.

Happy to see some familiar faces. The OOC would've been up by now but I got an Internal Server Error as I tried to post and have to head out right now, but it was a pretty bare WIP anyway, so there's at least that.

I'll respond to the sheets PM'd to me when I get back, which should be in twelve or so hours. As a reminder to you all, sheets are due June 10th, when I'll pick the 5-6 accepted sheets.

Side note, how many kingdoms would you guys prefer? I originally wanted to avoid 7 because Seven Kingdoms, but I was recently thinking of how there might be problems brought on by an even number of sides/alliances. Anyway, leave thoughts in the comments, yadda yadda. OOC should be up by tomorrow.

@DeadBeatWalkingWesteros during the days of the Targaryen Kings had nine traditional Great Houses: Stark, Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, Lannister, Tyrell, Baratheon, Martell, and the Targaryens themselves. The Riverlands of House Tully wasn't included as a historical 'kingdom' of its own (because it was subject to the Iron Islands at the time of Aegon's Conquest), and neither was the Crownlands, as at the time of the Conquest it was simply a border region between other kingdoms. That is why it's called the Seven Kingdoms even though it usually had nine Great Houses with their associated lands. If we were mimicking ASOIAF's political scene very closely, we'd have eight kingdoms of Great Houses staffed by eight players. Plus you, as OP and the royal house, as our ninth.

By the current way you have the structure of this written, your House, the royal demesne, is considered its own kingdom. That will leave us with five subordinate Great Houses—an odd number—if we decided to call ourselves the "six kingdoms" to avoid being the same as Westeros' traditional Seven Kingdoms.

You should make things utterly clear and decide two things definitively: how many players are there going to be, and is the royal demesne going to count as a kingdom?
