Personality: Despite his status as a true swordsman, Sovereign actually cares little about using his blades to win his battles and at one point in his life questioned why he even had them. He is quite lazy and spends a lot of his time sleeping, which he does so much that he is able to fall into a deep sleep in a matter of seconds. Likewise, he is not affected from being woken up by a head slam, reacting calmly when such an incident occurs. In contrast to this casual nature of his, Sovereign has been called the most violent-tempered of all the pirates, such a statement being more evident in his younger years. Sovereign also appears to have bad manners. Others note that he has complained about being served food from them yet eats it all anyway. Food is occasionally an attribution to Sovereign's dark sense of humor.

He once suggested to name a horse "Basashi" and grew hungry once he looked at its shoulder, which is a known part of the horse to be commonly eaten. Sovereign possesses a genuine relationship with all of his clansmen and cares for their well-being. However, since his master Roronoa Zoro's retirement he has since been more quiet and distant towards others. Nonetheless, his genuine concern for them has not wavered and he remains close to his clansmen. Sovereign is an avid smoker, having smoked since his early teen years.

History: Sovereign is the only child of Tashigi, he was the true reason behind her motives. She took on a secret mission that allowed her to be missing for a long period of time so others wouldn't see her during her pregnancy. Sovereign's existence was kept under the up most secrecy from the marines, general public and the pirates. Tashigi was put up on an uncharted and deserted island, with years worth of natural food, drinks, and housing. There was two people who knew of her location and about the birth of her son: Vice Admiral Smoker and Roronoa Zoro. Sovereign was born in a rare sense, when he cried she could feel his pain in her heart. When he was angry and throwing a tantrum, his rage was felt in the pit of her stomach. Sovereign grew up like any other child in a happy little shack with his mother and was curious about swordsmanship as soon as he could hold one. He was a natural with the sword, he could cut any chosen leaf into pieces as it fell from a tree to the ground. Tashigi was extremely proud of her young man, years of constant training from his mom she felt like she taught him everything she could. Soon afterwards Tashigi became extremely sick and Smoker decided it would be best if she went back to the Marine Headquarters for medical treatment. Smoker however, refused to get Sovereign involved with the Marines in anyway, but decided to always have someone on the inside of the Marines to look over him. So he reached out to the only other person he could, when Zoro arrive he harshly agreed to take over his training and train the kid himself. 7 years later Sovereign has eat, slept, train, and living the life of a pirate he succeed Zoro in battle. Sovereign spent his next 4 years of his life exploring the seas and hunting down and killing a warlord of the sea. Soon he grew tired of the battling and decided to make a deal with the marines against his mother wishes. He would accept the position of the warlord of the sea if he granted immunity from marine reign.
