The Queen is just there. She doesn't do or say anything of importance and that's why I like her... She does her job very well.

see, when i live like this people get mad and say stuff like "get off my couch" and "i don't know who you are"

if you literally just sit there and do nothing, you'll eventually become a part of the furniture and people will forget you exist.

This change has been in the works since 1990, so it's not a reaction to shitty, modern 3rd wave feminism pressure. We actually didn't even have one official version of Oh Canada as our anthem until 1970 (there were some regional variations), so it's not like our anthem is some centuries-old piece.

Frankly, I don't mind the change in the slightest. It doesn't change the meaning of the song, and I personally think that the only reason it was written with non-gender neutral lyrics in the first place is because when it was written, the default gender tense was usually male. It was the language of the time.

The Canada of 2016 is not the Canada of 1966. The Oh Canada of 2021 will not be the Oh Canada of 2015, and that's fine. No country remains static as time goes on, and as a living country I feel that it's appropriate that our anthem is a living piece as well, that will change over time to reflect the current state of our nation.

Most people I know that are angry about this are Albertans. I'm not sure if I've talked to more than five Canadians from outside of Alberta that are even slightly annoyed.

I thought this was your national anthem?

Oh no, that's not our national anthem silly.

We play that during official state visits and when we want to scare the shit out of terrorists and small children.

I originally wasn't bothered by the change, but when you put it like that it disturbs me. We shouldn't be swapping out O Canada's lyrics every six years because political sensibilities change.

Fair, but it's not every 6 years, it's closer to every 50, and this change has been under consideration for more than half the time that we've had an official version of Oh Canada. It's not a sudden thing, and that's why I'm okay with it.

gr] You got so caught up in the metaphor that the point went right over your head. Congratulations, that level of tunnel vision is probably a new record.

What a polite individual you are. Really respectful. Not some asshole that tosses insults around like an insecure teenager.

Alright, then let me be clear. You are betraying yourself, as an obnoxious, socially inept child. I'd advise that you attempt to gain a base level of maturity and self-restraint before you converse with adults, lest you come across as a brat throwing a tantrum.

I'm just facepalming at this whole thread, now. I mean, I can't even tell who's actually Canadian, and whos an American (or the sort) trying to say they know everything about Canada. I'm British myself, so I'd have no idea, but why exactly are we making a big deal out of this? From the first post, it seemed to me like this was a good thing - Canada's reaching a form of gender equality, by making the national anthem easier to sing for women. I doubt it's going to get so high pitched that men struggle. Also, can we not stereotype a whole country based on its' leaders? How would America feel if everyone stereotyped them as racist, sexist, overtanned bastards if Donald Trump wins presidency? I don't usually meddle with politics, especially on the Guild, but the behaviour coming from a few people is stupid. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong, without any needless insults, but remember: this is my opinion. Also, seriously? It's just a change to the anthem - get over it. You'll probably barely even sing it, anyway. I don't even know any of the words to mine.

Nah, not really. Everybody knows that's just Donald Trump. I actually thought we were past stereotypes at this time, but that apparently isn't the case.

I imagine they wouldn't like it all. First of all what if it's the wrong colour tan, and they get confused with Mexicans or Muslims? No that would really upset them. They'd probably want a total shut down of immigration from the commonwealth, to stop anyone holding a belief in this stereotype from entering the United States.

The American stereotype is the Fat Idiot. Not quite a Donald Trump.

And of course we aren't past stereotypes.

I know that. I'm just saying - don't start a trend of stereotyping a country based on its' leader(s).

if it makes you feel any better the British stereotype is pretty much just that you have bad teeth and your food is awful. doesn't go far beyond that
