Hmm lets see. My characters are always loyal, respect authority, always some basic class equivalent to fighter. Generally violent.

Usually small, skinny, innocent guy who just wants to help but is a massive screw up sometimes, not meant to be the main dazzling hero, but he has a kind heart. The Ron Weasly of roleplays.

Also witches. Lots and lots of witches.

Took me a while to think and see what is the one trait that branches across all my characters, but I think it might be that I never really sit on one character but usually have a pair of sorts.

This can vary in different ways and probably why it took me to notice. Some will have dual personalities, some may be siblings, two rivals, and so forth. Basically it'll usually turn into a situation where the whole story will be a construct of the two characters and each has a link to another.

One of my favorite examples would be my character Eppie where she was able to mutate into a lovecraftian creature cause she had a parasite monster that lived inside her.

After thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that most of my characters are self-critical, but adamant about moving beyond their situation, their shortcomings, or their past. I do play around with this idea quite a bit, now that I notice it, such as one instance where the character had already conquered his past, and had left himself in a cathartic state where there was little of value in his life, and he had no reason to do anything. I was also playing around with characters who moved past their situation by denying it entirely, leaving behind the past to reinvent themselves as a better person. It's kind of a situation where they believe the change is positive, but in reality they are just refusing to face their own issues.

I've also found that whenever I make two characters for one RP, I form some sort of massive dichotomy between the two of them, a sort of dual theme/concept that that the characters each represent a half of.

What a fun question!! So most of my characters have a specific lack of awareness. This might be interpersonal, situational, or of their own motivations. Not always just one, but definitely lack of awareness. I don't want my characters to know what I am doing while their backs are turned.

That and (I would suppose that it is a logical consequence) they all seem slightly confused/bemused/curious about the world around them. I think I rely on this trait for a lot of character motivation in the choices they make.

Another common theme is to pick some metaphorical symbol for them. Rat faced, blade thin, shiny, etc. I think I must use this to keep characters straight in my head. Rodents aren't beetles and gold isn't a birch tree.

I stay away from apathetic characters. They bore me to tears.

Huh. Makes me want to create one just to push my own boundaries! Heh.

THEIR PARENTS ARE DEAD!!!!! A good bunch of my characters I created when I first started rping had this trait. That said I didn't force them all to go DARKNESS!!!!!!!!!! I just use it as a driving cause for good or bad character's goals and not for them to brood with angst.

Most of my characters have had some sort of rough period in their life.
Personality-wise, many of my men have the 'calm, hard worker that goes off the deep end when you do manage to properly anger him' thing going, while many of the women are a combination of fairly mature but with a weird sense of humor.
Oh, and most are somewhere in their twenties.

The vast majority of my characters lately have been very serious and dedicated to their cause, whatever that may be, but that's only a recent trend. My cast has been pretty diverse over the entirety of my roleplaying career. I guess they're almost all men? That's a trait, right?

Well, let's seeeeeee.....
-For races, I usually go with vampires and aliens. The aliens are usually pretty benevolent, but I have one of them that's fairly famous for being an evil bastard.
-I usually go with southern or British accents (not all Londoners, mind you.) All of my vampires have southern accents, and my aliens usually follow the old 'All aliens are Brits' cliche.
-The males are all the ones with the troubled pasts.
-My Southerners are all hard-working and gentlemanly. They also live on a farm.
-Most of my male characters are gay or bi.
-I have 2 female characters.
-One is a shameless self-insert, but she has every one of my flaws and acts exactly like I do.
-The other is a designated love interest.

Ahhh I didn't know people did this!
Nearly all of my characters are intelligent, troubled teens. They walk the thin line between anti-hero and murderous villain. And they're all hella gay.

I like making good (alignment) characters. I try to do varying degrees of it based around the character's upbringing, history, training, etc, but most of my characters really try to do good, and are willing to risk themselves or sacrifice for it. I think it's especially fun when the "good" choice isn't totally obvious, or the choice is between two things that aren't entirely attractive. It creates internal turmoil and doubt, and that's a lot of fun to roleplay.

There are other traits, but I thought that was the most interesting one. My characters are female, and quite often fighters of some kind. Brave, sometimes recklessly so. They screw up a lot, but almost never blame others for their failings, even when they probably could.

My characters tend to be fighters/martial artists/warriors of some kind. They tend to be very moral, and deep thinkers with hidden depths most don't see. They're usually people who are kind, but you'd never want them to get angry. They're generally male, and most of the time not interested in relationships.
I enjoy characters that change the plot, instead of having the plot change them. They tend to be grounded, and determined.
