Hopefully however this turns out it ends up well for the Turkish people. I don't know enough about their political situation to feel comfortable rooting for either side of the coup, and the stories we are getting in the west are fairly varied.

Apparently the count is at least 265 dead, and 1440 wounded in the coup attempt.

What's the status of the coup? Completely over?

I was following DEFCON's Twitter late last night/early this morning before I fell asleep and it sounded like it was beginning to die down with multiple surrenders and arrests.

@Cynder Over. Erdogan won and now he's cleansing the 'traitors'. This is the absolute best case scenario for him - even better than if the coup didn't happen at all! Now he can use it as an excuse to shape the state further to his whim. I don't like it at all.

Edit: Case in point.

I'm a little relieved that it's over because of all of the talk involving a potential World War III and for the Turkish people as well, but I can't help but wonder why so many of them were protesting. Based on what my Turkish friends have told me, they're extremely unhappy with how they're living now.

It feels like Turkey might be heading in an even worse direction than before.

I expect Erdogan to go full Palpatine and declare himself "President for life" amid cheers of the civilians and the entire west calling it a great win for democracy.

I think it's there, but it's just not in the right spot. I'd even venture to suggest if folk knew anything about a good revolution beyond "muh Stalinism, muh Soviet scum" it might be more acceptable.

But as it is we're still in a post-Cold War world where that generation raised to subscribe to that is still hanging around. We just don't have any good Woody Guthries anymore.

We haven't really went over the event horizon yet either. When capitalism becomes untenable then shit will go down. There is a rather good chance people will go the nationalism route, but maybe if we are lucky we will have a few good years for real leftism before the nationalist get their nuclear world war going.

I don't like the direction the country is going. Especially now since Erdogan is using this failed coup as an excuse to strip more power away from the military and put it in his pocket. I won't be surprised at all if one day he's gonna come out and say that from that point forward he'll be president for life and his word will be law.

But anyway, if the guy becomes a dictator, which i'm sure he will, then the people will have nobody to blame but themselves. They're the ones that voted for him and made him president.

Well this more or less happened. They declared a 3-month state of emergency and announced that during this time they wouldn't respect the European convention on human rights. Already more than 25,000 people have been removed from office. This isn't only limited to military, but judges, public sector employees, teachers, professors. Oh, they also forbade academy staff from leaving the country. Let's not forget how military stormed the biggest private media a few months ago and it's now under state control. Meanwhile, the masses out in the streets are celebrating the "victory of democracy".

Now tell me that this isn't taken from "How to Dictator 101".

People who've been following the situation in Turkey know that Erdogan wasn't very popular. Remember the Gezi Park protests? Reportedly there were between 4-7 million people in person there, just in Istanbul. That's between 28%-50% of population of the entire city. This begs the question - where the fuck did all these people go?! You mean to tell me that they all had a change of heart? Yeah right.

I have little doubt the whole thing was state-organised now.

Either that or Erdogan really is Allah's favoured...in which case I see little in the path of Sultanship!

I've heard on the news yesterday that over 50.000 people have been arrested so far. Military personnel, cops, doctors, lawyers, judges. Even the E.U. has threatened that it will freeze adeheration negotiations if this continues.
