So, ten thousand years ago, the universe was threatened by Zarkon, the lord and commander of the Galra Empire. He overtook all that he saw fit to take, and was met with resistance by Voltron, the defender of the universe. However, Zarkon's forces scared King Alfor, who was in charge of the Paladins of Voltron, and ordered for the lions to be split up and hid in the corners of the universe. It was a choice that he had to make, and while he was killed by Zarkon, the Lions of Voltron, his daughter Allura, and her caretaker Coran, were all hidden safely.
Present day, ten thousand years later, Earth is just a little more advanced than it is now. Matt Holt, Sam Holt, and Takashi Shirogane (known as Shiro), were on a mission to Kerberos, a moon of Pluto, when they were abducted by the Galra Empire, and simply dismissed as missing by earth, as they have yet to come in contact with the Galra.
A young boy by the name of Pidge wants to find out what happened to the Kerberos mission and those who disappeared on it. With his friends Hunk and Lance, they escape the Galaxy Garrison, a school meant for space exploration, and travel to a crash site. They meet Keith, a GG dropout, and Shiro, who now has a robotic arm. The five of them are chased away by government goons to Keiths safehouse, where he's been looking for something.
The five of them discover the Blue Lion, hidden on earth, and the Lion accepts Lance as its new Paladin. The five get inside the Lion and are transported Via wormhole to the an unknown planet, where they find a castle and six occupants (two Alteans, four space mice). Allura tells her tale and informs the group that they are to become the new Paladins of Voltron, and must find the lions, reunite them, and stop the Galra Empire and end the ten thousand year reign of terror over the universe.
